A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
The stack of ungraded essays in the fifth drawer was quickly dwindling and on the opposite side of her desk an identical filing cabinet, also with the fifth drawer pulled open, was soon filling with marked up scrolls. Hazel’s quill, which she had enchanted to do all the manual work for her, was quickly scribbling away, correcting major and minor mistakes and making notes when she deemed them necessary. By their fifth year, Hazel was easily able to identify each student’s work just by their penmanship and she settled in for a more tedious read whenever a troublemaker’s handwriting appeared. Sure enough, the class clown of the Slytherin fifth years had included some snide remarks about only using the silencing charm when absolutely necessary – “or whenever that prat Lockhart starts going on.” Alright, Hazel sort of had to agree with the remark but it still wasn’t a suitable response for a school essay. Honestly, children these days had no idea how to sneak about. When Hazel was in school if she wanted to defy the teachers to have a bit of fun, she certainly didn’t write all about in an paper that she then handed to a professor. She marked off points for cheek and then rolled the scroll up and sent off over to the graded drawer.
Summoning the next essay, Hazel’s flow was interrupted by a knock and then the opening of her office door. She lifted her head to see who it was that had come to see her and upon seeing Professor Bones, Hazel smiled. “Of course,” she replied when he asked if she had a moment to spare. Hazel let her quill have a moment to rest while the two professors chatted and she stood and came around to the front of her desk, leaning back against it. She felt sitting behind her desk while Gus stood would be too formal and Hazel didn’t fancy things being too formal with her colleagues. She liked people to feel relaxed around her, even if they were discussing more severe matters.
“Were some of my students acting out again?” she queried, concerned that her Ravenclaws were just a bit too unruly during in a lesson where potentially dangerous creatures could have a run at you. Not that she doubted Gus’ ability to keep the students or his animals in line, but there were incidents in ever subject despite the skill of the instructor because sometimes, and Hazel hated confessing this even just inside her own head, but sometimes teenagers could be little shits.

It's not that it would be a problem for Hazel Winifred Vector that @bonnie was older, it's more that its not very natural to make friends with someone of a different generation unless you were forced to hang out, and even then it's like being friendly with your parents' friends. You might like them, they're fun for a round of cards and a laugh, but you're not inviting them out for girls night at the bar.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
The ceiling of the great hall was a pale blue, with large fluffy clouds smattered across it and just a hint of grey coming in front the east. Today would be a beautiful day and it made Hazel’s heart happy to know that so many students with their puppy loves and their budding romances would be able to sit out on the grounds today with their Valentines. Young love was a wonderful thing, even if it rarely lasted. Hazel had been “in love” several times during her formative years in school but of course those relationships had all fizzled out once she and her beaus realized they had little in common aside from their raging hormones, attractive features, and usually in Hazel’s case, their superb taste in music. That was not the stuff that made true love and Hazel knew that for certain as she had indeed found someone who she loved beyond words, despite his atrocious taste in music. She had married young, yes, but Alvin was her soulmate and they would still be happily married now if not for that fateful accident that ripped him from this world all too soon.
A flutter of wings could be heard in the distance and the sound grew louder and louder until a parliament of owls soared in through the high windows of the great hall to deliver the morning mail. Hazel was seated at the professors table and upon hearing the flapping of hundreds of birds her eyes lifted to the sky, knowing what was awaiting her. Alvin had always gone out of his way to make Valentine’s Day special, more so than every other day of the year which, in Hazel’s opinion, was already pretty bloody fantastic. After his death there were certain days that she began to dread, knowing his absence would be felt even more so in those moments but on her first Valentine’s Day without Alvin she still received gifts from a man she loved more than words.
A chubby barn owl landed on the table in front of Hazel as she sipped her juice and dropped a yellow envelope on her plate, landing in her scrambled eggs. She tried to school her features but her smile was unmistakable as she flicked the bits of egg off the envelope and began tearing at the seam as the owl flew off, back to the Hogsmeade post office. Freeing the card from its paper confines, Hazel looked at the picture drawn onto the front. It was a cartoon picture of her dog, Barkimedes, with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, and around him in bubble letters that were clearly her father’s untidy handwriting it said ‘I really wuf you’. Hazel chuckled to herself as she opened the card to read inside but was met with a shocking surprise. The moment the card was opened a huge shimmery cloud popped out and floated up above the table and Hazel’s head then began to rain glittery heart-shaped confetti down onto her head and the table, covering not only her plate but the plates of her colleagues who were sitting next to her. “Oh dear,” she said with a laugh as young eyes from the house tables below began to turn and giggle at the glittery mess hanging over the professors.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Lessons had concluded for the day and her students had done a marvelous job. The fifth and seventh years had, for the most part, been studying hard to pass their O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s respectively, and their attention to wrist movements and pronunciation was apparent. There were always a few troublemakers in every year and she hated doing it but sometimes doling out detentions and taking away House points was a necessity. Hazel much preferred using reinforcement as opposed to punishment but there were some children who seemed immune to her offers of extra credit or a few minutes less of class time. It came with the territory of being a professor and dealing with teenagers – so many teenagers – with all their hormones and end of the day energy bursts. Her morning lessons were generally much more subdued, but they weren’t as attention after those classes that followed lunch, and Merlin help her for whichever years had a lesson straight before lunch for they never listened to a bloody thing she said for the last twenty minutes of class.
Her fifth year students had spent the week working on the Silencing Charm and just today had turned in their essays on the dangers and caution required when using such a charm. In her early years of teaching, Hazel had quickly seen the effects of teaching such a powerful charm to rowdy teens who were constantly bickering. Careless boyfriends would silence their girlfriends in the middle of a row and things would escalate, naturally. Older students pranking younger ones by charming them mute and locking them out of the common room. It still happened now, but anecdotal reports from the other professors showed the rate of such inappropriate uses had dwindled since Hazel had implemented the essay requirements on this and a few other choice charms.
Settling down at her desk, Hazel gave her wand a little swish in the direction of a large filing cabinet, the fifth drawer opening itself and revealing a stash of scrolls; the students’ essays. Another wave of her wand and the first scroll flew through the air and settled gently on the desk in front of her. She set her wand on the table and picked up her grading quill and dipped it in red ink, then set it to work. Hazel’s eyes read over the words and the quill made notations wherever Hazel wanted it to, then gave a final score at the top of the essay and a note for Peterson to see her after class. The next scroll came zipping towards her from the filing cabinet, then the next, and the next. Grading papers was not the most interesting part of her job, but it was a part nonetheless and it gave her time in her office where she could be easily reached should another professor or a student need to speak with her.

Hazel Winifred Vector & @junebug -- Did wolfy take Charms? I think Hazel would have really liked Remus while he was at school as he seems a bit more mature than his mates.

Hazel Winifred Vector & @phouxee -- Did Sirius take Charms? Hazel was probably annoyed with all the pranks he and his friends pulled around the school and she probably dealt out a fair number of detentions over the years to this little troublemaker.

Hazel Winifred Vector & @kitty -- does Katherine take Charms? If so, Hazel has probably had to tell her off for talking during lessons a few times, but she always does so with a friendly smile because Katherine is obviously a sweet and friendly girl. Hazel Winifred Vector & @bonnie -- Bonnie is much older than Hazel so I don't think they would hang out, but they'd be friendly enough at teacher meetings and in passing in the halls.

Hazel Winifred Vector & Severus Theodisius Snape -- did he take Charms? If so, Hazel would have been his professor. She would definitely recognize his brilliance and tried to reach out when she noticed he wasn't doing well socially with the other kids. Hazel Winifred Vector & @carmen -- They both work at Hogwarts and I think Hazel would think she was a very lovely woman. They could chat about music some time and keep each other company from time to time. Hazel Winifred Vector & @fable -- does she take Charms??? Amelia Margaret Greengrass & @fable -- Amy would not be a fan of Maxine and she would be snide as all get out.

Birth Date: 19th June 1944 - 34 years old Height: five foot, seven inches Wand: 10¼", cherry, dragon heartstring |
PERSONALITY Boggart: Her daughter, Sophie, dying repeatedly in a variety of ways; hit by a bus, choking, killed with a curse, etc. Mirror of Erised: Hazel would see her daughter at the foreground, happy and with a family of her own Patronus: Ragdoll Cat - To conjure her patronus, a spell learned as an adult while studying to become a professor, Hazel remembers holding her daughter for the first time.
Hazel is a strong woman and over the years since her husband’s death, she has learned to be an independent woman as well. She has had to make tough choices in her life, from where to raise her daughter to whether she should continue to work as her parents’ health begins to fail. Above all, Hazel is a fighter – not physically as she wants no part in this war beyond peace, but she will fight through all of the mundane dragon dung that life throws her way in order to ensure she and her daughter have a decent life.
In spite of the hurdles she has faced, Hazel is an optimist. She tries to see the positive in every situation and is often sought out by her students if they should face a difficult time. She is good at giving support and advice, though her own daughter struggles with taking advice from Hazel – as a teenager is want to do with their mother.
Hazel loves to dance and enjoys being outside. She takes her dog Barkimedes out for walks each night through Hogsmeade and enjoys curling up with her cat Clawdia in the garden to read. She is an excellent cook – nothing fancy but she excels at the basics and enjoys having friends over for dinner and games. She is very much a people person but enjoys her solitude as well.
HISTORY Mother: Susan Marie Peters, 58, half-blood, Ravenclaw Father: Michael Richard Peters, 65, pureblood, Gryffindor Siblings: Edmund Michael Peters, 38, half-blood, Slytherin Partners: Husband - deceased - Alvin Vector, 30 (at time of death), pureblood, Hufflepuff Others: Daughter - Sophie Vector, 15, pureblood, Hufflepuff Nephew - Michael Edmund Peters, 7, half-blood Sister-in-law - Suzette Peters, 29, muggle-born, Slytherin Mother-in-law - Alexis Vector - 63, pureblood, Hufflepuff Father-in-law - Anthony Vector, 68, pureblood, Hufflepuff Brother-in-law - Alfred Vector, 30, pureblood, Hufflepuff Sister-in-law - Katrina Vector, 28, pureblood, Gryffindor Niece - Marilyn Vector, 3, pureblood Dog - Barkimedes, Border Collie, 8 Cat - Clawdia, Bengle Cat, 4
Hazel was born to Susan and Michael Peters in mid-June 1944. The second Peters child, Hazel was conceived in the midst of World War II; Susan was working as a nurse alongside muggles as she also cared for their young son Edmund, while Michael was fighting bravely for his country. In the short periods of relief that Michael’s troop was given, he apparated back to his wife and son and there he found a happy surprise in the form of a very round wife. After Hazel was born, Susan could no longer care for two children while working in the war relief efforts and the family moved to Hogsmeade where the protections of the magical world kept them relatively safe from the horrors of the muggle war. Michael visited his family as best he could but chose not to desert his brothers in the war as he was a true patriot as is still to this day. He continued to fight until an end was declared. Muggles and wizards celebrated, and the Peters soon returned to their home in Ipswich, England.
Edmund was three when Hazel was born, it wasn’t a large age gap between the siblings but big enough that he didn’t much want his baby sister following him around all the time. He looked after Hazel like a big brother should, and Hazel looked up to him and sought him for comfort. They were loving siblings despite having little in common and when Edmund went off to school, Hazel sobbed on the platform as the train pulled away.
Soon enough Hazel followed her older brother to Hogwarts, being sorted into Ravenclaw while Edmund had been placed in Slytherin a few years earlier. She excelled in her studies and took up tutoring the younger students in her spare time, finding she quite enjoyed being a tutor. She was made prefect and did not fret when she missed her opportunity to boast a shiny new Head Girl pin, she simply congratulated the other witch and kept on focusing on her school work, and the few boys that had claimed her attention.
After graduating Hogwarts, Hazel continued her studies in the hopes of one day becoming a professor at one of the wizarding schools. During this time, she courted a handsome pureblooded wizard by the name of Alvin Vector. He was a few years her senior, but they had run in many of the same circles while in school and Hazel had always fancied Alvin and his care-free spirit. The couple married in 1963, just before Hazel’s 19th birthday, Alvin was 21. The Vectors had a happy marriage which was blessed only a short while later with the birth of their daughter, Sophie.
Finally finished with her studies and awarded a teaching certificate from the Department of Magical Education, Hazel sought out jobs at the European wizarding schools, with her aim being the position of Charms professor or the like. She was offered a job at both Beauxbatons and Hogwarts, and opted for his alma mater and the school her daughter would one day attend. She had left Hogwarts as a student and a Peters but returned as a Professor and a Vector. She was 27.
For several years Hazel commuted between southern England with her family in the evenings and weekends, to Hogwarts during school hours and the occasional Hogsmeade trips which she chaperoned. Sophie was attending a muggle primary school during the day while her parents were at work and her grandparents would fetch her each afternoon and care for her until either Alvin or Hazel returned home. It was a system that worked for the happy family until one day Alvin didn’t return home. Hazel put Sophie to bed and paced the living room anxiously, wondering where her husband had gone and whether he was alright. Her worries were supported when she received an urgent owl from the hospital. Alvin had been involved in a portkey accident and severely splinched. The healers were unable to save him.
Hazel took a leave of absence from her post at Hogwarts to mourn her husband and in that time her parents’ health began to fail. Hazel cared for her daughter and her parents, but money was tight without Alvin’s income and the family agreed that Hazel should return to work the following year as Sophie was now old enough to attend Hogwarts as a student and wouldn’t need anyone to look after her. To make caring for the Peterses easier, the family once again moved to Hogsmeade for the conveniences the all-wizarding village provided, including a few family friends that had agreed to check in on Michael and Susan while Hazel taught at the castle. After her first day back with her students, Hazel returned to her home to share the happy news with her parents that Sophie had been sorted into her father’s house; Hufflepuff. She cried for many reasons that night, both happy and sad.
A year later the Ravenclaw Head of House retired, leaving two positions open at the school. Dumbledore came to Hazel to offer her one of them; Head of her old house. Initially Hazel declined, flattered by the offer and sad to have to say no, but she couldn’t live at the castle as the position typically required because her parents needed her to help them around the home and they had already moved to Hogsmeade to make things easier on Hazel. Dumbledore understood the predicament she was in and offered a compromise. The fireplace in Hazel’s office would be connected via the Floo Network and a series of security spells to the fireplace in Hazel’s Hogsmeade cottage. She could move freely between the castle and her home in order to perform her duties as Head of Ravenclaw and as daughter to the Peterses. She graciously accepted and has been Head of Ravenclaw House for three years now.
On school holidays, Hazel and Sophie visit family. Edmund and his family still live in Ipswich, but Alvin’s family lives in Wales. Sophie has two younger cousins; Michael on her mother’s side and Marilyn on her father’s side. Hazel ensures that Sophie remains connected to the Vector family despite her father’s death and she often spends a few weeks over summer staying with her grandparents in Wales. OOC |
