A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
The ceiling of the great hall was a pale blue, with large fluffy clouds smattered across it and just a hint of grey coming in front the east. Today would be a beautiful day and it made Hazel’s heart happy to know that so many students with their puppy loves and their budding romances would be able to sit out on the grounds today with their Valentines. Young love was a wonderful thing, even if it rarely lasted. Hazel had been “in love” several times during her formative years in school but of course those relationships had all fizzled out once she and her beaus realized they had little in common aside from their raging hormones, attractive features, and usually in Hazel’s case, their superb taste in music. That was not the stuff that made true love and Hazel knew that for certain as she had indeed found someone who she loved beyond words, despite his atrocious taste in music. She had married young, yes, but Alvin was her soulmate and they would still be happily married now if not for that fateful accident that ripped him from this world all too soon.
A flutter of wings could be heard in the distance and the sound grew louder and louder until a parliament of owls soared in through the high windows of the great hall to deliver the morning mail. Hazel was seated at the professors table and upon hearing the flapping of hundreds of birds her eyes lifted to the sky, knowing what was awaiting her. Alvin had always gone out of his way to make Valentine’s Day special, more so than every other day of the year which, in Hazel’s opinion, was already pretty bloody fantastic. After his death there were certain days that she began to dread, knowing his absence would be felt even more so in those moments but on her first Valentine’s Day without Alvin she still received gifts from a man she loved more than words.
A chubby barn owl landed on the table in front of Hazel as she sipped her juice and dropped a yellow envelope on her plate, landing in her scrambled eggs. She tried to school her features but her smile was unmistakable as she flicked the bits of egg off the envelope and began tearing at the seam as the owl flew off, back to the Hogsmeade post office. Freeing the card from its paper confines, Hazel looked at the picture drawn onto the front. It was a cartoon picture of her dog, Barkimedes, with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, and around him in bubble letters that were clearly her father’s untidy handwriting it said ‘I really wuf you’. Hazel chuckled to herself as she opened the card to read inside but was met with a shocking surprise. The moment the card was opened a huge shimmery cloud popped out and floated up above the table and Hazel’s head then began to rain glittery heart-shaped confetti down onto her head and the table, covering not only her plate but the plates of her colleagues who were sitting next to her. “Oh dear,” she said with a laugh as young eyes from the house tables below began to turn and giggle at the glittery mess hanging over the professors.

Love Is All Around Us Valentine's Day was never a lonely experience for Tristan. Since his school days he had had company for it in the shape of one pretty girl or another, and he was happy for that to continue. He had had a few girls who had lasted for two years in a row, but he wasn't looking to settle down just yet, and so a different girl for every year was not something he'd be complaining about. Today would be spent with a cute blonde he'd met in Hogsmeade. She worked at a bakery and Tristan had to admit, her muffins were something to admire. Her baking wasn't bad either. He was taking her for lunch later, since he was teaching tonight and could only get away for a few hours in the afternoon to have a bit of fun. He was sure he'd make the most of it, and it was nice that she'd sent him a little card stating how much she was looking forward to their lunch date, and a few cute chocolate heart lollipops from the bakery had been included. He'd sent her a little token in the form of a small bunch of flowers. Not roses, strictly not roses, he didn't want her getting any clingy ideas, but it was a pretty bunch nonetheless. He twirled a lollipop between his fingers as he sat at the staff table in the Great Hall, owls delivering packages and letters all around them. He couldn't complain about his delivery, and the students all seemed delighted with the things they were getting, even if most of them were from their parents. It was something Tristan's mother would have done had she been alive, sent him a little something just in case he was lonely. He smiled at the thought as he scooped some cereal into his mouth, his smile turning into a laugh as confetti rain began to pour down over the table. "Whoa!" he laughed, leaning away a little bit and glancing up to find the source of the glittery hearts. Professor Vector beside him looked rather sheepish, and Tristan covered his laugh with his spoon hand. "You know how to make a scene," he said, admiring the glitter hearts that sat in her hair, and knowing he'd have a ton in his own hair, too. He didn't mind, he was an Astronomy Professor, it was his job to admire sparkly things. He scooped another spoon of cereal, putting the lollipop down so he had a free hand to pluck a pink heart off of his spoon before filling his mouth and going for another scoop. "Tasty," he quipped, wiggling his brows at Hazel. _______________________ tag: Hazel Winifred Vector /open notes: Happy Valentine's Day! <3 outfit: Smoochalicious! template by izzy[googlefont="Reenie Beanie"]

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world A gentle shower of glittery hearts fell over a decent portion of the table, completely covering Hazel in confetti as the students closest to the professors’ table began to laugh. Hazel’s cheeks flushed as she gave a sheepish smile, tucking her chin down to hide her face. She could feel her ears go warm with embarrassment, but it was all in fun. Her father was such a wonderful man that he himself could have burst out of the card wearing his just his pants and bathrobe (that was far too short for a man) and she still would have adored him for the effort alone. The confetti shower fizzled out, leaving the table, teachers, and breakfasts sprinkled in her father’s love. With the display having ended, the students’ attentions were quickly turned back to their peers as they began opening their own mail and gushing over Valentine’s cards from their partners and secret admirers.
The professors on either side of her were also caught by surprise and Hazel’s cheeks grew even redder as Professor Dearborn commented on her scene causing abilities. She laughed, her head falling backwards a touch. The movement was enough to cause some of the shimmery pink and red hearts to fall from her hair and onto her dress. She picked a few hearts off her shoulder and tucked them away into the envelope her card had come in. “My father’s more the scene maker,” she laughed and showed him the card he had drawn for her with the cartoon-like image of her dog on the front cover. Not sure whether her dad had charmed the card to erupt in a shower of confetti every time it was opened or just the first, Hazel kept the card firmly closed as she showed off her father’s artistic abilities. “Although, I think at this point he’s just trying to top himself each year.” Last year he had sent two dozen pink and yellow roses in a package that had to be carried by three owls it was so heavy, and it completely blocked her view of the students when it was sat in front of her on the table.

Love Is All Around Us So it was her dad that had sent her the attention grabbing card. That was cute, and it made Tristan smile to think that one day he might have a daughter of his own to do a similar thing to. He didn't necessarily have any clear ideas about having kids one day and what he might want in a way of family, but he liked to think he might settle down eventually. He wasn't in any position to do that just yet, though, and was perfectly happy with that. His career had taken a major turn and it was exciting, he wanted to explore that and enjoy it to the fullest before he did anything that might change his position again. Working at a magical school was a lot different to the muggle ones he'd been teaching at in France, and those were both different again to the ones he'd studied at in Italy. It was a new adventure, and though it was technically going right back to his magical roots, it felt fresh, new, invigorating. He just hoped his afternoon date would understand that if she decided to get more attached than Tristan wanted her to. She would be fun for a few dates, but he couldn't see it going any further than that. He almost choked on his cereal at Hazel's words. "Your dad tries to ki-" Tristan broke off quickly before he could finish his sentence as he realised what she had meant. Her father did not try to kill himself every year, he tried to outdo his valentine's efforts from the previous year. "Ohhhh, okay," he shook his head and scooped another spoon of cereal. "I'm following." Barely. Blaming it on the early morning and a lingering haze of sleep, he brushed it off. "It's nice to have someone make a fuss of you. Doesn't matter who it is," he said, meaning it. Feeling special was something that did the soul good. A little spring in your step, a twinkle in your eye, it didn't have to come from a lover, just someone who cared about you had the power within them to make you feel great with a small token. Tristan liked to think that he was that kind of friend or brother, the kind to make his friends and family feel cherished every now and then, but he had to admit, he'd never done anything quite so public as showering one of them in sparkling hearts in front of an entire school. _______________________ tag: Hazel Winifred Vector /open notes: Happy Valentine's Day! <3 outfit: Smoochalicious! template by izzy[googlefont="Reenie Beanie"]

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Hazel was momentarily taken aback by Tristan’s misinterpretation of her words, but as he put two and two together she laughed. How could he have assumed she would be so cavalier about her father attempting suicide? But of course, he wasn’t cavalier at all, he’d been rather perplexed in those brief seconds before realization dawned on him. It hadn’t even been long enough for him to complete his sentence, but it was enough for Hazel to catch, and for her to feel the urge to laugh. She nearly always laughed if the urge arose.
Her parents were getting older, though not so old as most wizards were when they needed support from their children like the Peterses did. Her father had been injured in the war and while magic was able to heal much of the damage and he returned home to his family relatively safely, he was less able to get around the older he became. On several occasions he complained that “that Dumbledore chap is just showing off, running about at his age.” He harbored no ill-will towards Hazel’s employer, really, but when the subject of his mobility was brought up, he became the classic grumpy old man. It was a good thing, however, that no one really spoke of it all too often and Michael Peters was otherwise a lovely, caring wizard with a flare for the arts and a love for his family. Hazel and her brother Edmund were so lucky to have their parents.
Professor Dearborn commented on the niceness of being fussed over and Hazel couldn’t agree more. “It is, isn’t it? I’d like to think myself above most of this sort of thing but some days its just nice to be given something special.” She shook a few more shimmery hearts from her hair. “Maybe not this special,” she added with a laugh.

Love Is All Around Us Maybe not that special. Then again, Tristan wouldn't mind being showered with heart confetti if it was from someone he cared about. As it was, he didn't really have anyone to fuss over this year except for a girl he'd only known for five minutes. He often thought it would be nice to settle down with someone, to have that regular person who made you feel special, but it just never seemed to happen for him. Not for lack of girls in his life, there were plenty, but he didn't fancy committing to any of them. Clearly he was the problem, and as soon as he reached a day where he fancied a change in attitude, he was sure the right girl would come along. For now he would share the glitter sprinkles of his colleagues and eat them for breakfast. Plucking another pink heart from his cereal, he munched on another spoonful and then eventually gave up, sliding his bowl across the table out of the way and glancing at the toast that was on offer instead. The house elves had cut the toast in to heart shapes and the butter had glitter in it, but it still looked delicious, and Tristan wondered if there was anything they could do to a meal to make it taste like crap. Probably not. He picked up a slice of toast and took a large bite out of it, thinking boldness was the only way to go with trying new things. It tasted just like toast. Not sweet and sticky like it looked, and nothing exploded in his mouth. Just toast. He nodded in satisfaction and finished the rest of the slice before scanning the table to see what else was on offer. Holidays were fun like that, there was always something interesting about the food, or the decorations dotted about the castle. The shiny paper on his chocolate heart lollipops caught his eye, and he picked a pink one up and held it out for Hazel. "How about something a little less special?" he said as he offered the sweet treat to her. "Happy Valentine's." It was a small token, but it was something lacking in drama, besides, he wouldn't eat four of the things all to himself, he needed help to get through them. A sweet tooth was not something Tristan had ever really had. _______________________ tag: Hazel Winifred Vector /open notes: Happy Valentine's Day! <3 outfit: Smoochalicious! template by izzy[googlefont="Reenie Beanie"]
