A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
“I need to speak with you after lessons today. Come by my office?” Hazel was nervous for his discussion, or rather she was anxious. She’d rather get it all out in the open, over and done with, but she had a classroom full of first years that would be queuing up outside her classroom door shortly and there wasn’t the time to do it properly now. Likewise, she wasn’t sure she would be able to wait until the weekend when they could find more adequate alone time to discuss this dramatic turn of events. It had been just over a month since they’d fallen into bed together after a “staff meeting” at the Three Broomsticks and since then they’d been inseparable. Hazel gave Gus’ hand a gentle squeeze as she stood from the staff table, her breakfast finished, prepared to head to her classroom. After Gus had asked her out properly, they had both agreed that it would be inappropriate to be romantic in front of the students, so a glance, a smile, and a soft touch were the most they ever exchanged in the Great Hall beyond anything expected of two professors. After hours, however, had been an entirely different story.
The relationship had progressed enough within the month that Hazel broached the idea of telling Sophie. She didn’t like keeping secrets from her daughter and she knew that if word got out and reached Sophie’s ear before Hazel had gotten a chance to tell her personally, Sophie would have been hurt. She was a mature young women, nearly a legal adult now, and Hazel felt she owed it to her daughter to be honest with her. Gus had been wonderful, offering to answer any questions she had and not being at all offended when Sophie exclaimed that the whole situation was “weird” and asked to be excused. How would Sophie react to the news that she was to be a big sister? Hazel was getting ahead of herself. First she needed to tell Gus but the day seemed to draw out forever and by the time she dismissed her last class for the evening Hazel was completely spent. She had taken advantage of every silence throughout the day to mentally rehearse what she was going to say and every time it came out differently.
“Promise me you’ll practice tonight, McLaggen, and then we can have a retest tomorrow after lunch. You’re nearly there.” Hazel smiled reassuringly at the boy as he nodded and thanked her then ducked out of the office to catch up with his mates. The door was slow to close after him and Hazel turned to face the blackboard and wipe it clean with a flourish of her wand and a tired sigh.

"Mmhmm." Gus said as he shovelled some scrambled eggs and toast into his mouth. He enjoyed spending time with Hazel. Their relationship was on the down low, they were taking it easy in public but behind closed doors Gus was all over that! Not in a pervy, always getting down to business kinda way, heck no! Gus had nothing but respect for Hazel, he was getting to know her as much as he could, he was all over getting to know her better. They'd been friends for a while now but being intimate added a whole other dimension to their friendship, to their relationship! Gus couldn't beleive someone as stunning as Hazel would be interested in someone like him. He knew he wasn't ugly, no way! But he wasn't up to Hazel's kind of level. She was stunning, heavenly in fact, and he was Earthly. Not hellish, thank Merlin, but not heavenly like the angel he was beginning to share everything with. Not everything, he wasn't completely crazy to overwhelm her like that, but he was certainly comfortable with sharing whatever needed to be shared. She knew a lot about his separation from his wife before they'd started seeing one another. She knew he had a daughter a year older than her own daughter and she knew he had a sister in her final year at Hogwarts. It was strange but it kind of made everything easier. He was able to talk a little more in depth about whatever was playing on his mind and he hoped that she felt the same way around him. He wanted her to feel as though she could open up to him, after all he'd been through a divorce, but she'd lost her husband, the man that had been the love of her life.
It had only been a month since they'd been officially dating but Gus had a really great feeling about where things were headed with Hazel. They'd spoken to Sophie, Hazel's daughter, about everything and while she wasn't exactly jumping for the stars, she wasn't exactly opposed to the idea, so at least that was something for the new couple to work with. It was going to be a bit of a minefield navigating how to handle their relationship, but Gus was going to give it his very best shot. He'd talked about Hazel a couple of times in his letters to Remy and Hazel's name had popped up again a few more times. He hadn't intended it but it was probably apparent even in writing that he was smitten with the Charms Professor. Christmas was coming up soon, only a month away and Remy was planning on visiting Hogsmeade. Gus had talked with Camille via owl messages and while she didn't like the idea of Remy being away from her for Christmas, she was okay with letting their daughter make her own decisions, after all she was an adult now, something Gus couldn't quite get over when he thought of it. Learning to crawl, teething, learning to walk, more teething, learning to talk, more sodding teething, learning to use the potty, more bloody teething. Raising Remy had been full of ups and there were so few downs. He was so grateful to Camille that even though they were separated and then divorced, that she never once kept him from spending time with his daughter. She was a wonderful mother and had been a wonderful wife once upon a time, but that time was no longer, they'd drifted apart and rightfully so, they were just not right for one another any longer. Looking back on everything, Gus was kind of glad they'd drifted apart because without that he wouldn't have moved to Hogwarts to take up a teaching position. He wouldn't have met Hazel. He would have been dating the most amazing woman in the world. Life was strange but it always worked out. Well it didn't, but it did in this instance.
Gus' day ambled on by. Animals needed cleaning out and students needed lecturing, not because he was any kind of lecturer but because they were being pains in the arses and he had to spell out the most simplest of things that they'd all learnt last year. Still he carried on. There was a lot to do and after he was done he knew he had to see Hazel but honestly, he had dung over him and he didn't want to expose her to that kind of stench. So once up to the castle after his last lesson, Gus took a quick shower and dressed himself nicely to go meet Hazel in her office. He knocked on her door and called out, "Professor Vector?" It was frustrating having to keep things professional he'd like nothing more than to say something sexual like "Professor Love-Monkey" no wait, that was awful, "Professor Sexy-Tooshy" yeah, that was a little spicier, "Professor Mole-Butt" because of the cute little mole she had on the side of her perfect arse. Okay, he figured that one probably wouldn't have gone down to well. He wasn't too good at all that punny stuff or even just funny. Or sexy. He was a bit of an awkward individual really, funny in his own way but certainly not any way that could be considered conventional. "Your love machine has arrived" was what he wanted to say, but there wasn't any way he could safely say that, there could be a student hidden anywhere, or worse, Dumbledore, the quirky git. If he transfigured himself into a tea cup and sat around in an office all day, listening to his Professor's conversations then Gus would not have been surprised in the slightest. He;d be something strange like that, something people would pick up and place their lips on. Well okay, probably not. He was an odd individual but certainly a wise man. Eccentric was the perfect word for Dumbledore. Why was he thinking about that old coot when he had a beautiful girlfriend to focus his attention on?!

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
With the blackboard cleared of her flourished chalk writings, Hazel pocketed her wand and smoothed out the front of her long dress. Hazel wasn’t a fan of the traditional professor robes, and she wore them often enough, but it wasn’t uncommon for her to be spotted roaming the castle corridors in a floor length dress that looked at though it would be better suited for Woodstock than Hogwarts. Today’s number was a tan and caramel print made of light fabric that moved easily and gave Hazel the appearance that she was floating as she crossed the modest office to a filing cabinet on the far wall. She had a thick cloak hanging on the cloak rack behind her desk, in case she wanted to go for a stroll outside the castle where the thin fabric of her dress would do little to keep her warm. But she had no plans for a solitary walk around the grounds tonight, she had news for her boyfriend – manfriend? – Gus and it was so shocking there really wasn’t any way for Hazel to know what to expect from him. Well, other than shock. There was bound to be plenty of that.
The door opened and her name was called in such a professional tone that her first impression was to prepare for another student come to beg for extra credit, but she quickly recognized the voice and smiled. Turning her back to the filing cabinet, Hazel looked toward the door. Gus cut quite the figure in a dark pair of jeans and a nice jacket. He looked positively dreamy. Hazel could tell he’d cleaned himself up for their rendezvous; there was no way he was teaching Care of Magical Creatures in a button down and jacket. Hazel wished she’d have thought to gussy herself up a bit, or even to have made the time let alone the effort, but her job wasn’t nearly as physical as Gus’ was, so despite being tired and with a few hairs having gone astray, she still looked fairly put together. “Professor Bones,” she beamed, her tone and facial expression giving away her pleasure at his company to be much more than just a professional level.
She crossed the office to him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug, pushing the door shut behind him as she did so. "Hey, stranger." The formalities were necessary for their current situation but oh so bothersome. Hazel would rather have leapt across the room and planted a big kiss on him as a welcome, but with the door shut they could be a bit more relaxed. Hazel wasn’t beyond admitting to herself, and her closest girlfriends, that she’d give anything for Gus to be able to take her passionately on her desk but there was always the chance of a student forgetting their manners and strolling in like they owned the whole bloody castle, and the professors simply couldn’t take that risk. Still, it was a fun fantasy to think on. “Don’t you look smart,” she said of his outfit, fluffing the pocket square shoved in his pocket and hoping it was decorative – her father used a handkerchief and honestly it was such a disgusting habit. Was she fluffing his snot? No, Gus would never be so gross, and certainly he would stop her. Why was messing with his bogey rag when she had things to be getting on with? Her wandering mind didn't instill much confidence in herself that this conversation would be anything resembling efficient. She pressed her lips to his in a proper greeting, leaving his pocket square to sit in his pocket all posh looking and adorable.

Hazel came over and greeted Gus in a friendly manner as she also shut the door behind him. Gus returned her hug but ran one of his hands down over her bottom. giving a very gentle yet definitely cheeky little squeeze. It was certainly not the behaviour two professors should be seen doing, but The door was shut and they could jump apart in a flash if the door began to open. Truth be told though, Gus wanted to just snog the bejeebus out of Hazel. She was a stunning witch and he was batting way above his average even having a few tumbles with her, yet here she was, hugging him freely and willing to go so far as to call herself his girlfriend. What was that all about!? How did he keep getting these amazingly stunning women to fall for him? He supposed the how of it all didn't really matter, what was important was not losing her by making her feel uncomfortable in any sort of way. She was the widow of his friend which made this a thin line to walk in the first place, add on to that the fact they were work colleagues and it became even more dicey. Perhaps that was why she liked him, their relationship was borderline taboo. Whatever her reasons, Gus was trying to be as respectful of her boundaries as it was possible to be so snogging her in her classroom was off the table.
Hazel played with his pocket square, something he always just thought went with the outfit really and had given no thought of actual purpose to, but then wooo! It appeared that snogging was not off the table at all! Well she kissed him, not snogged him, but he kissed her back, gripping her left buttock a little tighter than before and then resting his hand on her perfectly round bottom. Merlin she was a spectacular woman and he wanted nothing more than to hurry away to her chambers and have a little fun with her. Their relationship was still so new and all these feelings of excitement that you got in a new relationship really had to be explored. "How 'bout we find a spot a little more private?" He suggested, giving his brown a quick little pump as he looked at the most stunning woman in the world. A full of of lessons and she was still positively glowing. Radiant didn't even begin to cover what Hazel was.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Gus gave her bum a good squeeze and Hazel deepened their kiss but before long their lips parted. They couldn’t forget where they were and getting caught up in each other in the middle of her office was not the sort of thing becoming of Hogwarts professors, let alone Heads of House. How could she expect the children to listen to her caution them against having a go with each other if she and Professor Bones were caught doing the very same thing? She couldn’t risk her authority, her connection with her students, nor her job. Not for a man she’d only been dating for a month. But he wasn’t just a boyfriend anymore, and as he suggested they sneak off somewhere more private Hazel knew she couldn’t wait any longer to talk to him. It would be unkind to shag him before telling him the news. What if he was unhappy about their situation? Would he look at her as someone who had purposely trapped him? She’d known Gus for a while now, longer than they’d been dating, and no, she couldn’t see him turning on her like that but exactly how he was to react she was still unsure of. There was only one way to find out. “I would like to talk to you first, if it’s alright. I think you might like to sit down.” She gestured to a pair of chairs in front of her desk.
Avoiding the habitual desire to move around the desk and sit behind it, Hazel took one of the chairs on the opposite side, her hand resting gently on top of Gus’. She rested at the edge of her seat, knees close to Gus’ legs, leaning forward in a show of vulnerability. She normally felt completely at ease with Gus, but understandably this conversation was not something she had thought would come up between them and she could feel her pulse quicken with excitement. “I’ve adored our time together, Gus. You have been absolutely wonderful. So kind and thoughtful and oh so patient, what with all the sneaking about and the Sophie bit. Truly, this has been an amazing month, erm, but I’ve just found out something that was, well, rather a shock.” Hazel’s volume softened and she thought back to all the mental rehearsals she’d gone through throughout the day. It had done nothing to actually prepare for all the nerves she was facing now. “I was late, and I saw a healer… and, well, as it turns out… It seems I’m pregnant.” Her eyes looked apprehensively into his, unaware that she was holding her breath having actually said the words she’d been preparing all day.

What was going on? Hazel wasn't exactly acting like herself. It wasn't that she wasn't Hazel, she was most definitely his Hazel, but she was acting like ... Not-Hazel. It was strange, she was always so certain and straight forward but right now he got the feeling she was beating around the bush a little but he hoped it wouldn't be for long because he wanted to know what it was she wanted to tell him. He was a little bit gossipy, he liked to hear about all the funny things the students got up to as though they thought they were original, forgetting that their teachers had once been young. So doing as she wanted, Gus took a seat on one of the chairs and Hazel took a seat on the one next to him. He felt like a student, it was all very strange and he wondered if she was going to break up with him. Maybe he was a little too goofy for her liking. She'd known him for six years, surely she'd known what she was getting in to before the'd started dating? Maybe it was kind of a pity dating. Give it a month then break it off, nice and easy. Nah, Hazel would never do that! He was adorable! A total catch!
The way she spoke was not helping Gus feel at ease. She was giving him the talk, it definitely sounded like they were done but it was a runaway train now, he wasn't going to stop what was in motion and besides, she was listing all sorts of good things about him. Were there such things as dating resumes? Could he put all this on his resume and list Hazel as reference for all future girlfriends? Well that was a strange thought but Gus's mind had a tendency to go to strange places in order to shield himself from getting hurt too much.
The words spilled forth and Gus froze. He was acutely aware of her hand on his but as he sat there, all he could think about was what Hazel had said. Pregnant? But that couldn't be right, could it? Well obviously it could be, she wouldn't prank him like this, it would be in poor taste and Hazel was far, far classier than that. However part of Gus wished it was a prank because a baby? Now? He'd only been with Hazel a month! A least she wasn't breaking up with him, that was something positive to take away from the situation. Although he'd been sat there now for a couple of minutes, his mouth hung open ever so slightly as all he did was blink. It probably felt like an eternity to Hazel and that realisation washed over him, but what in the bloody hell was he to do? It wasn't as though he felt cheering. He had an adult daughter for Merlin's sake! How were they supposed to have a baby when they already had two grown children? They were out of the baby stage! "Well that was certainly unexpected." He commented, having no clue what else to say. "Are you okay?" He asked, not sure what she even thought of the news or how she'd managed going through it on her own.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
It was a lot to take in. She’d rambled and beat around the bush so much that the bush was practically flattened, but when she finally got to the important part, Gus seemed to freeze. Hazel tried her hardest to be patient but the seconds ticked by so slowly in the silence and she suddenly had the urge to jump up and yell that it was all a joke and then run away from him. She could certainly avoid him well enough in the large castle if she skipped meals in the great hall and feigned sick for all the big events where her presence as Charms professor and Ravenclaw Head of House were required. No, that wasn’t the mature response, and it certainly wasn’t the logical one either. She loved Gus – even if she hadn’t said as much aloud yet, at least not to him. She might have loved him just an eency bit more if he would only say something now!
She laughed awkwardly. “Unexpected. That’s an awfully gentle way of putting it, but accurate.” She scooted closer to him, so near the edge of her seat that any further and she’d be on the floor. He asked how she was doing, and it was Hazel’s turn to go silent. “Errm…” She hadn’t thought about how she was doing! She’d been focused on how to break the news to Gus, and how he would react. And how Sophie would react! She hadn’t even gotten around yet to fretting over how to tell Sophie. “I- I’ve no idea, honestly. I hadn’t thought to think about me. It was sort of a ‘tell the dad first’ situation. Deal with everything else after.” She bit her lower lip, furrowing her brow as she looked at him. “Is that okay? Should I not have told you?” She shook her head, knowing what she was saying was absurd. “No. No, of course I should have told you. I’m being daft. Merlin, I didn’t think I would ever be feeling like this again.” Hazel squeezed Gus’ hands pleadingly. “Oh, just shut me up and say something.” If he didn’t stop her she’d just go on rambling for hours, and she certainly couldn’t stop herself now that her mind was free to race in every possible direction having finally said the words she’d been mentally rehearsing all day.

Not have told him? Well he kind of needed to know if he was having another child! Unless Hazel didn't want to continue on with the pregnancy, in which case Gus would perhaps have felt better off not knowing, although he couldn't very well leave Hazel high and dry dealing with it alone. No, all in all it was best that he was told and no matter how unexpected it was, he was more than pleased that things with Hazel were going well enough that she could come to him about this sort of thing. "No, no, you absolutely did the right thing," he said, wondering if she'd told anyone else before she'd come to him. How long had she been sitting on this information? He hoped she hadn't been fretting herself too much over the entire situation, the last thing she needed to do now was make herself sick from worry.
Gus was still quite dumbfounded although he was able to form coherent sentences, even if they were rather simple, "Do you need me to get you anything? Uh - what do we do now?" He asked, having no idea how far along she was or what in the hell they were going to do. She was going to get bigger over the next few months, if she was keeping it. How were they going to tell Remy and Sophie? This was quite the predicament to be in but Gus couldn't imagine going through it with anyone else.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Terminating the pregnancy was never an option for Hazel, despite Helly offering it as a suggestion. That was all well and good for some people and Hazel would never judge them for making that decision for themselves but it wasn’t for her. Not that she had ever been in a situation where she had needed to consider such an option. This was most definitely a first for the 35 year old witch, and so far from the expected that she hadn’t given a single hypothetical thought to what she might do if she and Gus fell pregnant. Not everything needed to be planned out, and she was already growing steadily surer of her choice to keep the baby.
Gus was managing the shock of it all rather nicely, though she suspected his mind was working a little faster than his mouth. He asked what they were to do now, and Hazel shook her head. “I’ve no idea. I have another appointment with the healer in a month. You’re welcomed to join me if you’d like, but there’s absolutely no obligation on your part. For any of it, if you’d rather not. I know we’ve only just started dating so if you’re feeling trapped by any of this…” She loved Gus. She hadn’t said as much to him directly just yet, but it was true. Perhaps a bit sudden all things considering, but clearly there was no adherence to any typical timetables in their relationship. If he was open to it, she would gladly continue seeing him but she wouldn’t put pressure on him to do anything he was uncomfortable with. Nor would she insist on an answer before he’d given it a proper thought.

An appointment. Next month. Okay, yeah, he could do that, right? Trapped? Wait, what was she saying? Gus frowned at the whole idea that she thought he might be one of those fellows that would up and leave a relationship because of an unforeseen little bump in the road - or on the belly as the case was. "Merlin no, I'm - I'm in this, all of this. I'd love to come to the Healer with you." He would, he really would. Remy had been a surprise for he and his wife. They'd always talked about having kids someday, but she'd come along before they were financially ready for it. In the end they'd moved to France to basically partially rely on his ex's family, and it had helped. He'd become bilingual so that was good, Remy had had a beautiful, freeing childhood where she knew all her mother's family and she saw his family in the Summers. This baby was another unexpected surprise, just like his or her big sister Remy, but he was financially better off right now, although he had no idea how Hazel was really, but he'd support the both of them, and Sophie, if he had to, he was more than willing to do that. "If there's any cost for the visits or if you need new clothes or if you're craving ice cream sandwiches and mustard at three o'clock in the morning, let me know, I'll have it all taken care of." He said, waving his right arm in front of him. Anything she needed, he'd happily get for her, he didn't want her worrying about a thing. That was good, he should say that. "I don't want you worrying about a thing." He said, taking her hand and lifting it to his lips. Gently he kissed the back of her hand and then lowered it, stroking his thumb over the kiss. He was absolutely crapping himself internally, but in a good way. This was exciting and scary, and daunting, and had he mentioned scary at all? It was definitely scary, but so good.
