A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Hazel nodded as Helley gave herself a little confidence pep talk. Any guy who wasn’t interested in Helley was simply missing out. She was brilliant, and always up for a laugh. She might have been difficult from time to time, but that was one of the things Hazel loved about her.
“Maybe,” answered Hazel, if not a little apprehensively. “I’ll definitely need a little liquid courage if I do. You should though, for sure!” Karaoke wasn’t about being good, it was about having fun and being wild. That was right up Helley’s alley, and just around the corner from Hazel’s alley when they were out together. “I’m so glad you talked me into this. I needed a night out.”

Hazel was unsure whether she would be partaking in the karaoke, but she was more than supporting of anyone brave enough to get up on that stage. She was certain Eric would be, he was a karaoke god (even if only crowned so by himself) and she hoped Helley would get up there as well. At the moment it was a pretty blonde witch with a great voice. Helley cheered and turned to face her, Hazel still swaying to the music as she scanned the crowd for her friend’s sake. Eric was definitely looking her way, at least for a moment. “Can’t take his eyes off you!” She leaned forward and gave her friend’s bum a good slap. It just felt like the right thing to do.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
“You should buy the one next to mine. The neighbors aren’t selling but it would be perfect, if your idea of perfect was living next door to Michael Peters and his early morning singing and gardening combo.” Hazel laughed, finding her father’s daily rituals more endearing than annoying, at least most days. It would, of course, be amazing if her best friend lived right next door, but they weren’t children anymore planning unrealistic life goals for themselves. Nearly half of Hazel’s friends didn’t even live in the same country. Proper adults didn’t turn their entire lives upside down just to move in with their friends like they would have when they were teens, but they could still have plenty of fun regardless. Tonight was proof of that. A girl's night out and a barn party, all rolled into one. It was going to be brilliant, and Gus was with Susie all night so there was no need to worry about getting home early.
The exterior of the party, despite its small stature, looked promising as soon as the women arrived. People heading inside while letting the music escape and groups congregating outside and smiling, and of course the obnoxiously large sign that proudly claimed it was for the party people. “That is the start of a fun night,” Hazel replied, linking arms with Helley and heading inside. Hazel laughed as Helley, the much more boisterous of the pair, announced their arrival into the barn with a loud whoop and an energetic bouncing that was contagious. Hazel joined in, though a bit more subdued, as she looked around that rather spacious interior. Lights, music, a bar. Everything one needed for a good time.

A sparkle, that was a lovely way of putting it. Hazel smiled. Gus had brought a sparkle to her life too, in the form of little Suzie. Merlin, how she missed her little one. Would it be horrible inappropriate of a chaperone and Head of House to sneak out of the castle during tonight’s event to go check on her little babe? Hazel looked at the time and knew Suzie would be getting ready for bed right about now. She hoped her mum remembered to use the special lavender soap for her bath time, that always helped Suzie sleep better. It had worked wonders with Sophie as well. Her girls were so similar already and it made Hazel beam, but she needed to put her professor hat on tonight. She could wait until morning to check in on Suzie… or maybe at least until Gus arrived. “Oh, brilliant.” Coffee appeared and it was none too soon. Hazel picked up her mug carefully and clinked it against Geralina’s. “To a calm and uneventful evening,” she toasted whimsically.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
A Christmas sleepover in the Great Hall! What a brilliant idea. Hazel was all too excited for the event, although it did mean leaving Suzie with her mum and dad for the first night ever, and Hazel was having a hard time with the decision. She trusted her parents completely, but Sophie had been nearly a year the first time she and Alvin had left her for a night. This seemed far too early, and she was doubtful she’d even get any real sleep out of the separation.
In anticipation of the holiday for their little mingling families, Hazel had gotten everyone matching jammies. Herself, Sophie, Suzie, Grammy Susan, and Gus’ daughter Romy all had received little packages tied in pretty purple bows. The boys; Gus, and Grampy Michael, had ice blue bows around theirs. Hazel had been so pleased with herself that she’d given everyone their silly gifts early, unable to wait until Christmas Eve as she had planned. And while she certainly wasn’t dictating whether Sophie or Gus had to wear theirs to the sleepover tonight, she quietly hoped that they would, so she dressed in her Merry and Bright and headed down for the event.
“It looks to be a fun night,” she remarked to Geralina. She spotted one of the boys in revealing ladies pajamas – if you could call the outfit pajamas – and sighed. “It’s always Gus’ lot, I swear.” She chuckled at the Hufflepuff quietly, making a mental note to keep an eye on things with that particular group. She didn’t want to be the fuddy-duddy that made a show about appropriate attire. They were teenagers, for Merlin’s sake. They were bound to be more outlandish than this, just so long as they were smart about it and kept it out of sight from the chaperones.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Terminating the pregnancy was never an option for Hazel, despite Helly offering it as a suggestion. That was all well and good for some people and Hazel would never judge them for making that decision for themselves but it wasn’t for her. Not that she had ever been in a situation where she had needed to consider such an option. This was most definitely a first for the 35 year old witch, and so far from the expected that she hadn’t given a single hypothetical thought to what she might do if she and Gus fell pregnant. Not everything needed to be planned out, and she was already growing steadily surer of her choice to keep the baby.
Gus was managing the shock of it all rather nicely, though she suspected his mind was working a little faster than his mouth. He asked what they were to do now, and Hazel shook her head. “I’ve no idea. I have another appointment with the healer in a month. You’re welcomed to join me if you’d like, but there’s absolutely no obligation on your part. For any of it, if you’d rather not. I know we’ve only just started dating so if you’re feeling trapped by any of this…” She loved Gus. She hadn’t said as much to him directly just yet, but it was true. Perhaps a bit sudden all things considering, but clearly there was no adherence to any typical timetables in their relationship. If he was open to it, she would gladly continue seeing him but she wouldn’t put pressure on him to do anything he was uncomfortable with. Nor would she insist on an answer before he’d given it a proper thought.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Susie was making the most adorable little squeaks and coos. She sounded more like a baby mouse than a baby witch. Hazel could just melt. The gentle creaks of footsteps on the stairs signaled that her other baby had come out of hiding. Sophie had been a trooper through all of the changes, far better than Hazel could have ever imagined. She was a teenager, so there was of course some angst and some cold remarks here and there, but Hazel understood that this was not an easy adjustment for anyone to make, let alone a teenaged girl. She really was proud of how well Soph was managing with it all. Hazel lifted her eyes to see her eldest daughter stroll toward the kitchen but the cookies must not have been done yet as she returned empty handed only a few moments later.
Sophie crossed the room and extended her arms and an offer to hold the baby. Hazel smiled brightly, the dark circles under her eyes more prominent with the action. “My baby holding my baby,” she cooed softly, giving Sophie a nod to signal she could take her sister. She offered up the bundled babe, supporting her head and moving her gently into Sophie’s arms. “Watch her head,” she cautioned more out of instinct than concern. “You have her?” she checked. Hazel needed to run to the toilet while her arms were free but she wouldn’t dash off straight away. She attempted to hide a yawn – poorly – and smiled bleary-eyed at the image in front of her. Sophie was such a strong young woman, so full of confidence and smarter than Hazel could have ever hoped. She really was in awe of her daughter and seeing Soph holding her baby sister was a magical experience. "Look at my girls," she said aloud to no one in particular.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Hazel felt immensely fortunate for how her life was turning out. There had been some tremendous sorrow in the past but the present was coming along just splendidly. She’d been lucky to avoid morning sickness in the later months of her pregnancy, and Gus had been a doll fulfilling any absurd craving she told him about. Pickles and chocolate cream at three in the morning? Yes, of course he’d pop out to the store to get some more, because of course she’d finished off the rest of the chocolate earlier that day. Hazel had also been blessed to be able to work until the end of the school year, getting to see her students off for the summer and give her well wishes her to her seventh years who were off for bigger and better adventures in the world of adults. She sobbed like an infant on their final day at the castle, able to blame it on the pregnancy hormones but she always got choked up come the end of the school year. Yes, things were going well, but they couldn’t have been lovelier now that little Susan was home.
Exhausted and in need of a toilet shortly, Hazel sat in a comfy chair the lounge with her newborn daughter in her arms. Susan was very nearly asleep but Hazel had tried to move once before and had woken the infant who immediately demanded to be fed. She was going to be a rather large baby if she kept eating like this and it made Hazel’s heart so full to have a chubby baby in her home once again. Grammy Susan was making cookies in the kitchen and Grandad Michael was tending to the plants in the back garden. There were happy smells and sounds all around the little cottage and Hazel couldn’t help but smile adoringly at the little cherub before breaking into a gigantic yawn.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
It was a lot to take in. She’d rambled and beat around the bush so much that the bush was practically flattened, but when she finally got to the important part, Gus seemed to freeze. Hazel tried her hardest to be patient but the seconds ticked by so slowly in the silence and she suddenly had the urge to jump up and yell that it was all a joke and then run away from him. She could certainly avoid him well enough in the large castle if she skipped meals in the great hall and feigned sick for all the big events where her presence as Charms professor and Ravenclaw Head of House were required. No, that wasn’t the mature response, and it certainly wasn’t the logical one either. She loved Gus – even if she hadn’t said as much aloud yet, at least not to him. She might have loved him just an eency bit more if he would only say something now!
She laughed awkwardly. “Unexpected. That’s an awfully gentle way of putting it, but accurate.” She scooted closer to him, so near the edge of her seat that any further and she’d be on the floor. He asked how she was doing, and it was Hazel’s turn to go silent. “Errm…” She hadn’t thought about how she was doing! She’d been focused on how to break the news to Gus, and how he would react. And how Sophie would react! She hadn’t even gotten around yet to fretting over how to tell Sophie. “I- I’ve no idea, honestly. I hadn’t thought to think about me. It was sort of a ‘tell the dad first’ situation. Deal with everything else after.” She bit her lower lip, furrowing her brow as she looked at him. “Is that okay? Should I not have told you?” She shook her head, knowing what she was saying was absurd. “No. No, of course I should have told you. I’m being daft. Merlin, I didn’t think I would ever be feeling like this again.” Hazel squeezed Gus’ hands pleadingly. “Oh, just shut me up and say something.” If he didn’t stop her she’d just go on rambling for hours, and she certainly couldn’t stop herself now that her mind was free to race in every possible direction having finally said the words she’d been mentally rehearsing all day.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Gus gave her bum a good squeeze and Hazel deepened their kiss but before long their lips parted. They couldn’t forget where they were and getting caught up in each other in the middle of her office was not the sort of thing becoming of Hogwarts professors, let alone Heads of House. How could she expect the children to listen to her caution them against having a go with each other if she and Professor Bones were caught doing the very same thing? She couldn’t risk her authority, her connection with her students, nor her job. Not for a man she’d only been dating for a month. But he wasn’t just a boyfriend anymore, and as he suggested they sneak off somewhere more private Hazel knew she couldn’t wait any longer to talk to him. It would be unkind to shag him before telling him the news. What if he was unhappy about their situation? Would he look at her as someone who had purposely trapped him? She’d known Gus for a while now, longer than they’d been dating, and no, she couldn’t see him turning on her like that but exactly how he was to react she was still unsure of. There was only one way to find out. “I would like to talk to you first, if it’s alright. I think you might like to sit down.” She gestured to a pair of chairs in front of her desk.
Avoiding the habitual desire to move around the desk and sit behind it, Hazel took one of the chairs on the opposite side, her hand resting gently on top of Gus’. She rested at the edge of her seat, knees close to Gus’ legs, leaning forward in a show of vulnerability. She normally felt completely at ease with Gus, but understandably this conversation was not something she had thought would come up between them and she could feel her pulse quicken with excitement. “I’ve adored our time together, Gus. You have been absolutely wonderful. So kind and thoughtful and oh so patient, what with all the sneaking about and the Sophie bit. Truly, this has been an amazing month, erm, but I’ve just found out something that was, well, rather a shock.” Hazel’s volume softened and she thought back to all the mental rehearsals she’d gone through throughout the day. It had done nothing to actually prepare for all the nerves she was facing now. “I was late, and I saw a healer… and, well, as it turns out… It seems I’m pregnant.” Her eyes looked apprehensively into his, unaware that she was holding her breath having actually said the words she’d been preparing all day.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
With the blackboard cleared of her flourished chalk writings, Hazel pocketed her wand and smoothed out the front of her long dress. Hazel wasn’t a fan of the traditional professor robes, and she wore them often enough, but it wasn’t uncommon for her to be spotted roaming the castle corridors in a floor length dress that looked at though it would be better suited for Woodstock than Hogwarts. Today’s number was a tan and caramel print made of light fabric that moved easily and gave Hazel the appearance that she was floating as she crossed the modest office to a filing cabinet on the far wall. She had a thick cloak hanging on the cloak rack behind her desk, in case she wanted to go for a stroll outside the castle where the thin fabric of her dress would do little to keep her warm. But she had no plans for a solitary walk around the grounds tonight, she had news for her boyfriend – manfriend? – Gus and it was so shocking there really wasn’t any way for Hazel to know what to expect from him. Well, other than shock. There was bound to be plenty of that.
The door opened and her name was called in such a professional tone that her first impression was to prepare for another student come to beg for extra credit, but she quickly recognized the voice and smiled. Turning her back to the filing cabinet, Hazel looked toward the door. Gus cut quite the figure in a dark pair of jeans and a nice jacket. He looked positively dreamy. Hazel could tell he’d cleaned himself up for their rendezvous; there was no way he was teaching Care of Magical Creatures in a button down and jacket. Hazel wished she’d have thought to gussy herself up a bit, or even to have made the time let alone the effort, but her job wasn’t nearly as physical as Gus’ was, so despite being tired and with a few hairs having gone astray, she still looked fairly put together. “Professor Bones,” she beamed, her tone and facial expression giving away her pleasure at his company to be much more than just a professional level.
She crossed the office to him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug, pushing the door shut behind him as she did so. "Hey, stranger." The formalities were necessary for their current situation but oh so bothersome. Hazel would rather have leapt across the room and planted a big kiss on him as a welcome, but with the door shut they could be a bit more relaxed. Hazel wasn’t beyond admitting to herself, and her closest girlfriends, that she’d give anything for Gus to be able to take her passionately on her desk but there was always the chance of a student forgetting their manners and strolling in like they owned the whole bloody castle, and the professors simply couldn’t take that risk. Still, it was a fun fantasy to think on. “Don’t you look smart,” she said of his outfit, fluffing the pocket square shoved in his pocket and hoping it was decorative – her father used a handkerchief and honestly it was such a disgusting habit. Was she fluffing his snot? No, Gus would never be so gross, and certainly he would stop her. Why was messing with his bogey rag when she had things to be getting on with? Her wandering mind didn't instill much confidence in herself that this conversation would be anything resembling efficient. She pressed her lips to his in a proper greeting, leaving his pocket square to sit in his pocket all posh looking and adorable.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Nervous wasn’t exactly what Hazel was feeling at that moment, but it was amazing how calming Helley’s hand on her knee actually was. Hazel bit her lower lip excitedly, beaming brightly through it and trying to take a few deep breaths so that she could actually get all the words out properly. Clearly she’d not been doing such a bang up job of it, as Helley was coaching her through breathing just as she had when she’d been in labor with Sophie. The women had been through so much together. Hazel was beyond ecstatic that they had a bit more joy to share. “I’m pregnant,” she finally, her sharp features lighting up as the words rolled off her tongue. “Gus and I are going to have a baby.” She felt a shiver of excitement crawl across her shoulders and down her arms as her own words hit her ears.
She and Gus, together, having a baby. Had anyone at any point in her life told Hazel that she would one day be in love with one of her husband’s old friends, that they’d be pregnant together and both actually excited for it, Hazel wouldn’t have believed it. Gus had been at Hazel and Alvin’s wedding. He had had a wife of his own at one point. They both had children, Sophie was nearly an adult! Gus’ daughter Remy actually was an adult. It was definitely not to be expected that they’d be starting their own little family together at this point in their lives, and there was still a lot that the couple had to discuss, but Hazel was happy. Gus was happy, or so he said, and Hazel really did believe him. His reaction was so honest, you couldn’t help but believe it. It was scary and different and not the least bit planned, but it was wonderful too and Helley simply needed to be a part of it all.

Thank Merlin Helley wasn’t up to something private because Hazel wouldn’t have been able to cope with walking in on that, nor would she have been able to wait any longer to share the news. Helley sat as instructed and now there was nothing left but to put it out there. “I love Gus,” she said pointedly. Hazel plopped happily into the chair opposite her, wishing almost immediately that Helley had more cushions. The thin padding on the wooden seat was not meant to absorb a happy plop but it was more uncomfortable than painful and didn’t deter Hazel in the slightest. “I haven’t told him that yet, but I do. He’s just so warm, and kind, and smart. He really is incredible. I never thought I’d love anyone after Alvin and I wasn’t planning to start seeing anyone, certainly not while Sophie was still in school or living at home. So obviously all of this comes as a surprise but I’d just found out and I had to tell you as soon as I could because, let’s face it, I can’t keep anything from you.” She was rambling and she didn’t care. Hazel couldn’t stop smiling, she looked like she’d slept with a coat hanger in her mouth.

Without knocking – which very well could have been a disaster if their younger years were any indication – Hazel pushed open the door to Helley’s quarters and let herself in. “Okay, sit down,” she said in a politely demanding way, not even taking a moment to scan the room to make sure they were alone. “I have news.” She’d been practicing all morning. Gus knew and now it was Helley’s turn. As Hazel’s best friend it couldn’t wait any longer and she’d already been sitting on this news for nearly two full days. She was about ready to burst though Hazel didn’t know it was because of her excitement for the shocking, sudden, and completely surprising news or if the adrenaline pumping was a preemptive response to Helley’s undoubtedly wild reaction. She had already done this whole thing before, but that was nearly seventeen years ago and certainly neither of them had ever expected Hazel to be having this conversation a second time. It was absolutely bonkers, but in such a good way. She was certain this was good news. Shocking, of course. And completely out of the blue. Definitely an accident but a happy accident nonetheless and she couldn’t wait any longer to share her happy news with her best friend.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
“I need to speak with you after lessons today. Come by my office?” Hazel was nervous for his discussion, or rather she was anxious. She’d rather get it all out in the open, over and done with, but she had a classroom full of first years that would be queuing up outside her classroom door shortly and there wasn’t the time to do it properly now. Likewise, she wasn’t sure she would be able to wait until the weekend when they could find more adequate alone time to discuss this dramatic turn of events. It had been just over a month since they’d fallen into bed together after a “staff meeting” at the Three Broomsticks and since then they’d been inseparable. Hazel gave Gus’ hand a gentle squeeze as she stood from the staff table, her breakfast finished, prepared to head to her classroom. After Gus had asked her out properly, they had both agreed that it would be inappropriate to be romantic in front of the students, so a glance, a smile, and a soft touch were the most they ever exchanged in the Great Hall beyond anything expected of two professors. After hours, however, had been an entirely different story.
The relationship had progressed enough within the month that Hazel broached the idea of telling Sophie. She didn’t like keeping secrets from her daughter and she knew that if word got out and reached Sophie’s ear before Hazel had gotten a chance to tell her personally, Sophie would have been hurt. She was a mature young women, nearly a legal adult now, and Hazel felt she owed it to her daughter to be honest with her. Gus had been wonderful, offering to answer any questions she had and not being at all offended when Sophie exclaimed that the whole situation was “weird” and asked to be excused. How would Sophie react to the news that she was to be a big sister? Hazel was getting ahead of herself. First she needed to tell Gus but the day seemed to draw out forever and by the time she dismissed her last class for the evening Hazel was completely spent. She had taken advantage of every silence throughout the day to mentally rehearse what she was going to say and every time it came out differently.
“Promise me you’ll practice tonight, McLaggen, and then we can have a retest tomorrow after lunch. You’re nearly there.” Hazel smiled reassuringly at the boy as he nodded and thanked her then ducked out of the office to catch up with his mates. The door was slow to close after him and Hazel turned to face the blackboard and wipe it clean with a flourish of her wand and a tired sigh.
