Hazel Winifred Vector
PERSONALITY Boggart: Her daughter, Sophie, dying repeatedly in a variety of ways; hit by a bus, choking, killed with a curse, etc. Mirror of Erised: Hazel would see her daughter at the foreground, happy and with a family of her own Patronus: Ragdoll Cat - To conjure her patronus, a spell learned as an adult while studying to become a professor, Hazel remembers holding her daughter for the first time. Hazel is a strong woman and over the years since her husband’s death, she has learned to be an independent woman as well. She has had to make tough choices in her life, from where to raise her daughter to whether she should continue to work as her parents’ health begins to fail. Above all, Hazel is a fighter – not physically as she wants no part in this war beyond peace, but she will fight through all of the mundane dragon dung that life throws her way in order to ensure she and her daughter have a decent life. In spite of the hurdles she has faced, Hazel is an optimist. She tries to see the positive in every situation and is often sought out by her students if they should face a difficult time. She is good at giving support and advice, though her own daughter struggles with taking advice from Hazel – as a teenager is want to do with their mother. Hazel loves to dance and enjoys being outside. She takes her dog Barkimedes out for walks each night through Hogsmeade and enjoys curling up with her cat Clawdia in the garden to read. She is an excellent cook – nothing fancy but she excels at the basics and enjoys having friends over for dinner and games. She is very much a people person but enjoys her solitude as well. The second Peters child, Hazel was conceived in the midst of World War II; Susan was working as a nurse alongside muggles as she also cared for their young son Edmund, while Michael was fighting bravely for his country. In the short periods of relief that Michael’s troop was given, he apparated back to his wife and son and there he found a happy surprise in the form of a very round wife. After Hazel was born, Susan could no longer care for two children while working in the war relief efforts and the family moved to Hogsmeade where the protections of the magical world kept them relatively safe from the horrors of the muggle war. Michael visited his family as best he could but chose not to desert his brothers in the war as he was a true patriot as is still to this day. He continued to fight until an end was declared. Muggles and wizards celebrated, and the Peters soon returned to their home in Ipswich, England. Edmund was three when Hazel was born, it wasn’t a large age gap between the siblings but big enough that he didn’t much want his baby sister following him around all the time. He looked after Hazel like a big brother should, and Hazel looked up to him and sought him for comfort. They were loving siblings despite having little in common and when Edmund went off to school, Hazel sobbed on the platform as the train pulled away. Soon enough Hazel followed her older brother to Hogwarts, being sorted into Ravenclaw while Edmund had been placed in Slytherin a few years earlier. She excelled in her studies and took up tutoring the younger students in her spare time, finding she quite enjoyed being a tutor. She was made prefect and did not fret when she missed her opportunity to boast a shiny new Head Girl pin, she simply congratulated the other witch and kept on focusing on her school work, and the few boys that had claimed her attention. After graduating Hogwarts, Hazel continued her studies in the hopes of one day becoming a professor at one of the wizarding schools. During this time, she courted a handsome pureblooded wizard by the name of Alvin Vector. He was a few years her senior, but they had run in many of the same circles while in school and Hazel had always fancied Alvin and his care-free spirit. The couple married in 1963, just before Hazel’s 19th birthday, Alvin was 21. The Vectors had a happy marriage which was blessed only a short while later with the birth of their daughter, Sophie. Finally finished with her studies and awarded a teaching certificate from the Department of Magical Education, Hazel sought out jobs at the European wizarding schools, with her aim being the position of Charms professor or the like. She was offered a job at both Beauxbatons and Hogwarts, and opted for his alma mater and the school her daughter would one day attend. She had left Hogwarts as a student and a Peters but returned as a Professor and a Vector. She was 27. For several years Hazel commuted between southern England with her family in the evenings and weekends, to Hogwarts during school hours and the occasional Hogsmeade trips which she chaperoned. Sophie was attending a muggle primary school during the day while her parents were at work and her grandparents would fetch her each afternoon and care for her until either Alvin or Hazel returned home. It was a system that worked for the happy family until one day Alvin didn’t return home. Hazel put Sophie to bed and paced the living room anxiously, wondering where her husband had gone and whether he was alright. Her worries were supported when she received an urgent owl from the hospital. Alvin had been involved in a portkey accident and severely splinched. The healers were unable to save him. Hazel took a leave of absence from her post at Hogwarts to mourn her husband and in that time her parents’ health began to fail. Hazel cared for her daughter and her parents, but money was tight without Alvin’s income and the family agreed that Hazel should return to work the following year as Sophie was now old enough to attend Hogwarts as a student and wouldn’t need anyone to look after her. To make caring for the Peterses easier, the family once again moved to Hogsmeade for the conveniences the all-wizarding village provided, including a few family friends that had agreed to check in on Michael and Susan while Hazel taught at the castle. After her first day back with her students, Hazel returned to her home to share the happy news with her parents that Sophie had been sorted into her father’s house; Hufflepuff. She cried for many reasons that night, both happy and sad. A year later the Ravenclaw Head of House retired, leaving two positions open at the school. Dumbledore came to Hazel to offer her one of them; Head of her old house. Initially Hazel declined, flattered by the offer and sad to have to say no, but she couldn’t live at the castle as the position typically required because her parents needed her to help them around the home and they had already moved to Hogsmeade to make things easier on Hazel. Dumbledore understood the predicament she was in and offered a compromise. The fireplace in Hazel’s office would be connected via the Floo Network and a series of security spells to the fireplace in Hazel’s Hogsmeade cottage. She could move freely between the castle and her home in order to perform her duties as Head of Ravenclaw and as daughter to the Peterses. She graciously accepted and has been Head of Ravenclaw House for three years now. On school holidays, Hazel and Sophie visit family. Edmund and his family still live in Ipswich, but Alvin’s family lives in Wales. Sophie has two younger cousins; Michael on her mother’s side and Marilyn on her father’s side. Hazel ensures that Sophie remains connected to the Vector family despite her father’s death and she often spends a few weeks over summer staying with her grandparents in Wales.
