My promise to you always and forever
“I went for your birthday once. That is plenty, thank you very much.” Once was more than enough, though Dorian was not unfamiliar with the club scene, especially in his younger years when he could more easily blend in with the crowds while on assignment. He was getting a bit old for undercover nightclub work, thank Merlin.
Leo’s camera was back in action and he had appeared to have gotten a few of Ariel and Julian. “Next time,” Dorian replied with a shrug. Had Ariel asked either of her uncles to wear a fairy dress, Dorian was quite certain they both would have said yes. Dorian himself was getting far too used to donning one of Ariel’s tutus whenever they played dress up.

She placed her hand over his, and Dorian cupped hers with his other hand. She was really quite remarkable, but it simply wasn’t the time for them. Perhaps later on when the world was not so chaotic, though Dorian knew better than to hold his breath. Immy wouldn’t be single for long. With her charms and warm heart, she would attract many suitors that could offer so much more than Dorian was able to provide. “I only wish I could have given you more.”

Dorian gave the woman a nod of gratitude as she opened her door wider to allow him inside. He looked no further into the house than the room that she offered to him, and he sat in a chair across from the sofa, waiting for her to sit before he spoke.

With Andre’s departure there was definitely no escaping being dragged back out into the party by his best mate, but he’d save the confiding conversation for a later time. There was no use getting into the details of the letter he’d been gifted or the first few sentences of it he’d managed to read before becoming overwhelmed by it all. Dorian had loathed celebrating his birthday especially after his parents had passed, and being given more family somehow felt like a slap in the face to the mum and dad that had raised him. Leo would hear it all eventually, but certainly not tonight. Not here. “I’ll tell you about it later,” he agreed. “A stripper cake might actually be a good distraction,” he said with a very slight chuckle, although if Dorcas had anything to do with such a surprise she would likely be the stripper in the cake, in which case Dorian would definitely be passing.

Dorcas nudged him playfully, to which Dorian replied “you’ve not seen my moves,” implying that perhaps Tristan was a tad bit better than his uncle, when in truth Dorian was quite good at some forms of dancing; fairy party dancing not being one of them. Thankfully, his brother saved him from having to join in the dancing by making a spectacle of himself for Ariel’s sake. Dorian spotted Leo nearby with his nephew and, conveniently, a camera. Unaware that Leo had spent all his film mocking their mutual friend only minutes earlier, he nodded his head in Leo’s direction and said “hey mate. Mind capturing a bit of this?” Dorian gestured to Julian, Ariel, Tristan, and Aurora who were all dancing with the story-telling fairy. Pictures of this moment would go perfect in his photo albums.

Not really being one to care about his age, it still stung a little with the youngster remarked that his dad listened to Draconus. And then the fact that he had internally referred to Killian as a ‘youngster’ simply put a nail in the coffin. Dorian was a grumpy, old man. He didn’t like that much. “A beer, thanks,” he said with a nod as Killian asked if he wanted a drink. A beer or two wouldn’t be too bad and Dorian could still make it home to Ariel safe and sound without smelling like a nightclub.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian had put things off as long as he could, without punishing the young lad for circumstances outside of his control. It had been a few months since his brother had unknowingly gifted him the burden of knowledge and it wasn’t too difficult to put the pieces together after reading the whole of his birth-mother’s letter to him. His biological father was a man named Marcel L’amour, an uncommon surname and yet one that was quite familiar to the man. It took less than a few minutes of scanning through personnel files at the MLE to find the name, and Dorian had busied himself with work away from the office for the rest of that day. He could not, however, avoid his newfound family forever, particularly as he was head of the Auror Training Academy and his apparent half-brother was one of his best trainees.
Roux had been assigned to shadow every other Auror Dorian could get away with pushing him onto, but he was running out of time and Dorian couldn’t keep him out of his final bit of training just be Dorian himself was uncomfortable. So here they were, and it was no doubt Roux knocking on his office door, right on time. “Come in,” Dorian said from behind his desk, organizing the files they would be needing today.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian was still somewhat uneasy with the idea of working with Albus Dumbledore behind the Ministry’s back. He knew it was the right thing to do, as Albus had said, but never in a million years would he have imagined he would be part of a vigilante group. Initially, upon Dorian’s introduction to the group, he assumed it was a rather small organization. He had met only a handful of other “Order Members”, some of whom he recognized but had very little relationship with. Dorian realized now that Albus had been testing the waters with him, and after apparently determining that he was indeed trustworthy, Dorian’s understanding of the magnitude of the Order of the Phoenix was rectified. He was shocked and yet not all that surprised to find some of his own coworkers were associated with the Order. How Dorcas managed to keep her lips tight after all these years of quasi-friendship was, in fact, the real shocker, and yet he was aghast to find out he’d been listed as an emergency contact on her Ministry paperwork. The nerve of her.

Dorian was more of a classical music fan, than anything modern. He had no suggestions for the lad off the top of his head, not even sure who Valentine was. If Killian wanted to play Doozy the Dragon’s greatest hits, Dorian unfortunately had the entire album memorized top to bottom. It was Ariel’s favorite, at the moment, though Dorian had several childrens albums imprinted onto his brain at this point. “There should be some Draconus albums in there. I know that was Leo’s favorite in school.” Killian was probably too young to even know who Draconus were, but back in their Hogwarts days he and Leo knew every song of theirs by heart. They had even toyed with the idea of starting a band together, as all teenagers inevitably do, but clearly fame and fortune as rock stars eluded them.

Dorian waited in a squat position with Tristan until Julian gave his blessing and Tristan exclaimed "He said yes, Uncle Dor!" Dorian smiled. “Brilliant!” Rising to his full height, Dorian politely looked toward Vienna. “It was lovely meeting you again.” Tristan, thankfully, was tugging on Dorian’s arm and he went with his nephew willingly, secretly happy to have gotten the niceties over and done with. He would much rather have spent the day watching Ariel chase paper fairies and even listening to Dorcas’ step-daughter Aurora explain why the fairies her father bought her were better than the ones on offer in the bookshop, but it would have been rude to not say a proper hello.
As they approached the singing fairy, Tristan let go of Dorian’s hand and ran off to dance with Ariel and Aurora, along with several other children. “There’s quite a few people here,” Dorian said as he walk up to stand beside Dorcas, watching the children dance. She could probably hear the disdain in his voice at having one of his happy places, a bookshop, so crowded with people. “Watch me, uncle Dor!” Tristan shouted excitedly to Dorian, who gave the boy his fully attention. “I’m watching.” Tristan flailed around like an adorable munchkin.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The first half of their meal went along as most of them did. Their conversation skills had never once been in question, and Immy seemed to just innately understand what Dorian meant when he talked about the way certain places had a feeling to them, or how you could have conflicting emotions over the same event. Dorian wanted to paint a picture of the better parts of their relationship, to set the stage for how, if she wanted to, they could transition back to friendship because they really did get on so well. And as they were talking, laughing about the good times, he paused and set his fork down on his half-empty plate. “I just realized all of that happened before I asked you on a proper date.” And he had just realized that. He had known for some time now that his relationship with Immy had no momentum, and he knew their getting on wasn’t the issue, but everything since they had become a couple, while lovely, seemed to require a level of work he had not previously noticed until this moment. It had taken him by surprise. “I sort of feel responsible now for our lack of more recent stories, as if I robbed us of something by wanting more with you. I do enjoy spending time with you, Immy. I hope you know that. Even if we can’t manage to see the end of an evening through together.”

Dorian wasn’t sure what to say to Andre, but he appreciated the offer. Sitting in uncomfortable silence was about as comfortable as he was going to get, and so he sat there with Andre, saying nothing for a decent amount of time. After a long while, Dorian sighed, and looked up to Andre just as the door opened again. This time it was Leo, who entered and gave no offer of peaceful silence. Dorian shoved the letter from his birth mother into the inner pocket of his jacket as he looked at the man standing at the door. “Well since there’s a party out there, this seemed like my best option at avoiding it.” Honestly, whomever thought Dorian Humbert would like an event like this, was off their rocker. But of course he’d been told who it was that set the whole thing up, and Dorian couldn’t possibly be annoyed with his brother for trying to do something nice. A party. A letter from their mother. To anyone else, it would have been a perfect way to celebrate a birthday. He couldn’t fault Julian for his plans.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The witch approached and introduced herself as one of Leo’s colleagues from St Mungo’s, to which Dorian smiled. “Nice to meet you.” Well at least that explained why such a young couple were at Leo’s party, since it’d be practically impossible to crash without Leo’s knowing. He felt impossibly old around these two, who he assumed were not much older than Hogwarts graduates, judging by their baby faces. They could practically pass for Tristan’s mates. Killian asked, for lack of a better word, for an escort into the living room which Dorian couldn’t politely get out of. He didn’t really have anything else to do, so why couldn’t he show the lad to the stereo. Why? There had to be a reason….
Nope. Damn. "Sure."
Dorian nodded as Killian clapped him on the back and he turned out the door he’d just come through and headed into the living room where a small crowd of people were already gathering. Dorian wasn’t sure when exactly he’d become a crotchety old hermit, but the thought of chit chatting made his jaw tighten. “Leo’s got loads of records. I’m sure there’s something you’ll fancy.” As promised, the stereo was to the left of the bar, a collection of records stacked neatly on display.

Dorian was rushed by a little pixie with a curly blond mop, and Dorian knelt down to the boy’s level to speak with him face to face. Dorian disliked how some people spoke to children from a towering position, forcing the child to crane their neck upward only to often be scolded when they look away. Dorian’s own parents had never treated him like that, they were always very aware of speaking to him properly and without holding their stature over him when he was little. He tried to emulate that now that he was a parent as well. Tristan took his hand and Dorian beamed at the boy. “Hey there, champ. Let’s ask your dad if you can come with me until he’s done talking with his friend. Alright?” Dorian made sure to never speak for Julian by giving permission to Tristan for anything that wasn’t already agreed upon. There was still sometimes an uneasy air between the brothers that made Dorian uncomfortable, and he would not add to it by assuming more of a role in his nephew’s life than what Julian wanted.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Parties weren’t his thing, but Leo was his best mate and had a way of guilting Dorian into attending every year despite his reluctance. He had hoped to have crafted a perfect plan this year, hide out in the kitchen being useful and then head out early without having to socialize with too many people. In fairness, he hadn’t actually expected his little plan to work, but was hoping he could at least get away with chatting to only the people he knew. He trusted Leo, but he couldn’t trust all the plus ones Leo was allowing into his home, and in the middle of such chaos as the world was in right now, a party did not seem like the smartest of ideas.
He was just returning to the kitchen from dropping off a tray of toppings, hoping the couple who had come in as he left would have cleared out by now, but upon his return he was greeted by the boyfriend while the girlfriend seemed to be completely rearranging Leo’s refrigerator. “Dorian Humbert. Nice to meet you,” he said, flashing his own polite smile. “The stereo is in the living room, right through there.” Dorian pointed the man in the direction of the living room, expecting that to be the end of it. “To the left of the bar.”
