Dorian Michael Humbert
PERSONALITY Boggart: His adoptive mother as a zombie Patronus: Dorian's patronus is a griffin, originally conjured by the memory of his parents signing the adoption papers, but after his girlfriend Paris James was murdered in front of him, Dorian found a new memory was required to form his patronus - his first night with Paris, confessing his love and hearing those three little words in return Mirror of Erised: Himself with a family; a wife, two children, and a dog Dorian was a true to form Ravenclaw when he attended Hogwarts, and as such he is the typical book worm. He does all of his own research while working a case, and in his leisure time he enjoys reading non-fiction. However, he also is a bit of a workaholic and allows himself very little down time. He prides himself on being a professional, and does not often mix work with pleasure. He is confident in his ability to track and bring to justice dark wizards and witches, and prefers to work alone when possible. That being said, he is not opposed to training potential new Aurors or giving professional advice, so long as mentoring does not interfere with his actual duties. In his personal life, Dorian tries to be very respectful, but is afraid to allow anyone too close for fear that they may be used as a way to take revenge on him for the capture of a dark witch or wizard. He is a very passionate man below the surface but appears stoic and it has been mentioned on occasion that he comes off as somewhat of an “old man”. He has also been requested to remove the broomstick from his backside. Dorian doesn’t see a problem with closing himself off from people, believing that they are safer at a distance from him. His fears are, of course, completely founded and based in a repeated history that only reinforces Dorian's self-imposed social isolation. If not for his recently deceased girlfriend, Paris, he would have continued on with closing people out of his life but Paris had a profound affect on Dorian and as such he has been trying to be more open to mild social relationships. HISTORY Mother: Adoptive - Barbara Humbert, 47 at time of death, Hufflepuff, Pureblood Biological - Genevieve Blackthorne 46 at time of death, Ravenclaw, Pureblood Father: Adoptive - Karl Humbert, 51 at time of death, Gryffindor, Halfblood Biological - unknown Siblings: Maternal - River Blackthorne, 23, Hufflepuff, Pureblood Maternal - Julian Blackthorne, 25, Slytherin, Pureblood/werewolf Paternal - unknown Partners: Girlfriend - Paris James, 27 at time of death, Gryffindor, Pureblood Others: Niece/Adopted Daughter - Ariel Genevieve Blackthorne-Humbert, 4 months, Pureblood Colleague/Pain in the Arse - Dorcas Meadowes, 27, Slytherin, Pureblood Dorian spent the first four years of his life in an orphanage with no Christian name given to him at birth and he was left on the stoop of a wizarding orphanage in Watford, England. One of the women working at the orphanage when he arrived was reading an Oscar Wilde novel and suggested to the rest of the staff they call the babe after the character in her book. Dorian was a social child and played well with the other youngsters at the orphanage. When he was four he was adopted by Karl and Barbara Humbert. His adoptive parents were upfront about him being adopted, but never treated him as anything but their own flesh and blood. He was so loved by the Humberts that it never crossed his mind to attempt to find his biological parents. Even after the untimely death of his parents, he was never concerned with finding the people who gave him away as an infant. The Humberts were pleased when Dorian began showing signs of magical abilities and overjoyed when his Hogwarts letter came. Upon arrival at the school, Dorian was promptly sorted into Ravenclaw with very little hemming and hawing from the Sorting Hat. Dorian studied hard while in school, getting excellent marks in all of his classes and serving as Prefect in his sixth and seventh years. After graduating from Hogwarts, he joined the Ministry of Magic as an Auror-in-training. He quickly proved himself worthy of the position and was hired as a full-fledged Auror by age 19 – earning the title of the fastest trainee in modern history having finished his coursework with top marks in a year, instead of the traditional three. He worked hard and was assigned increasingly difficult cases. When Dorian was 23 he tracked a dark wizard to Egypt where he was taken captive along with an innocent young woman. Dorian managed to escape and captured the dark wizard, Vlad, but the villain’s henchmen got to the woman before Dorian could. Her mangled body haunted his dreams for months. Six months later, when he was 24, one of Vlad’s henchmen hunted down Dorian’s parents as revenge for the capture and imprisonment of their leader. The Humberts were missing for 16 days. When Dorian finally found them, it was a gruesome sight. His father, Karl, had been decapitated and his blood used to write a message on the wall of the cave where the Humberts were trapped. The message simply read “unfinished”. The wizard had also captured Dorian’s mother Barbara and tortured her to the brink of insanity. When Dorian found her in the cave she was lying in a puddle of her own waste, holding her husband’s headless body as if they were napping together. She later committed suicide in her room at St. Mungo's after scrawling anti-demon protection charms on the walls in her blood and screaming for two days straight. The circumstances of her apparent suicide were considered suspicious by the brilliant Auror, but deemed unfounded by the Department Head. Since the events leading to his parents' deaths, Dorian has struggled with his desire to have close relationships (platonic and otherwise) and to keep the ones he loves at a safe distance. He threw himself into his work, staying unfathomably long hours, working weekends, and not taking freely taking holidays. Any holiday time he did use was at the orders of his superiors and Dorian spent the duration of his ‘break’ researching his parents’ kidnapping and murder/suicide. In early 1978, while canvassing Hogsmeade after a rash of murders, Dorian ran into an old schoolmate; Paris James. The two chatted amicably and parted ways, but the intuitive brunette stuck in Dorian’s thoughts and he soon found himself making excuses to see her; interviewing her in relation to the case, upgrading her security charms on her home, assisting her with her out of control garden. The more Dorian saw of Paris, the more she managed to chip at his defenses. After several months of refusing to admit to himself his feelings for the woman he saw weekly, Dorian finally asked her on a legitimate date. Still refusing to allow himself to let her get too close, Dorian kept Paris at arm’s length until he couldn’t bear it anymore. He confessed his feelings for and they made love. The next morning, as Dorian and Paris walked down to the shop, Death Eaters attacked. While Dorian was fighting off one of the masked men, another fired the Killing Curse at Paris. Dorian was able to catch her body as she began to slump to the ground, but she was already dead. He had only truly known her for four months but in that time, Paris changed Dorian’s life. Striving to make her proud, he continued to force himself to be more social with people, particularly the people Paris talked about wanting him to meet; her friends and family. It is still hard for Dorian, he enjoys his solitude and finds socializing more exhausting than he did when he was younger before he was burdened with the knowledge that his loved ones would always leave him in one way or another. He tries not to get too close still, but he’s beginning to open up. His biological sister had her hand in pushing Dorian to becoming more sociable as well. Only a week after Paris' death, Dorian received a letter. It was more of a note than a letter and there had only been one thing written on it. River Blackthorne The next day Dorian intended to track down Ms Blackthorne, not knowing if she was in danger and this was a cry for help or if something more benign was at play. The perky, very pregnant blonde that appeared at his desk that same day was anything but benign. A mysterious helper had found Dorian's biological sister, River, and directed the pair to each other. River explained that her mum, who had been killed in a similar attack as Dorian's girlfriend Paris a fortnight earlier, had been too young when she fell pregnant and had given the baby away hoping he would have a decent life. River and her brother Julian came along later when their mum had grown up and settled down with a man who was not Dorian's father. River did not know who Dorian's father was, but she shared all sorts of wonderful stories about their mother, his half-siblings, and her own little family. River was married with a baby on the way. She even knew his birthday, which Dorian had never actually known, having always celebrated his adoption date rather than the day of his birth. Brother and sister reunited, Dorian was welcoming of his new family until chaos struck again. While at a carnival with River and her husband Bert, Dorian attempted to fend off a Death Eater attack. Bert was killed and River gravely injured. Knowing the risks of apparation while pregnant, it was the only way out of their situation and against River's pleas, Dorian took them both from the carnival. They were both splinched and the trauma sent River into labor. Dorian's arm was healed but River's injuries were too extensive. The healers delivered her baby as River passed on. Unable to reach his biological brother, Julian, a troublesome werewolf whom Dorian had yet to meet, Dorian adopted his orphaned niece and has been caring for her ever since, carrying with him the burdensome knowledge that he could have stopped her parents from dying had he only been faster, smarter, better.
