Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
A break up was not ideal but if they could manage to reclaim some of the friendship that had been lost in this misguided attempt at love, Dorian would be elated. The direction they were headed now was not the one they had intended and when one gets lost the only options are to continue travelling down the doomed highway or to reverse course and try a different path. Immy suggested she leave and while Dorian did not want the evening to end on such a somber note, it really was the only option for them. "Of course," he said solemnly. Walking her to the door, Dorian pulled her cloak from the closet and wrapped it around her shoulders. His hand found its way to her cheek and he held her face for a moment, unsuccessfully attempting to gather his thoughts into a coherent sentence. He smiled dolefully and let his hand drop from her face.

He could see the mixed expressions on her face; sorrow, pain, confusion. Most of all there was a hopelessness. Dorian felt for the woman. He had been on her side of this conversation himself but he wouldn't presume to truly understand how she felt in that moment. Every loss was different. "I'll be heading the investigation, so if you have any information that might be of use to us, your husband's business dealings, enemies, anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, please contact me." He handed over the second business card which held his contact details printed over the MLE's department logo. "I am so very sorry for your loss, Mrs Tonks." There was little more to be said at this moment and Dorian, unfortunately, had other investigations to continue with today.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
An unforeseen complication. Dorian understood those far too well but it made him no less annoyed with Dorcas’ cavalier attitude. He wanted to scold her for acting like a child but he restrained himself, or perhaps it was the knock on the door behind him that forced his hand. Dorian turned and pulled the door open, coming face to face with one of the women that worked the welcome desk at the Ministry. She offered a quizzical look at Dorian as she passed him the duffel bag that belonged to Dorcas. He thanked her and shut the door again.
Crossing the room and setting the bag on the bed beside Dorcas, Dorian’s expression stiffened again. He could go to the office and do a little snooping to determine where she had been and what she’d been up to - if she was doing anything at all for the Ministry. He was extremely skeptical that if her outing had been at Albus Dumbledore’s request, he would be able to ascertain any details whatsoever. The Order had a lot of cauldrons in the fire and Dorian was smart enough to know he was privy to very little details of their goings on. Of course, he could always just wait and hope that Julian would come to pick up Tristan as he usually did after a full moon but that would be hours still, as Jules needed time to cooperate from the change without little Tristan becoming concerned or neglected. Still, he knew there was no love lost between his half brother and his colleague, and while Dorcas was unaware of Julian’s circumstances, he couldn’t trust his brother to keep his wits about him during a full moon. If the pair had crossed paths somehow... Julian was just one of many werewolves in the world so the odds of this being the case were slim. Slim but not impossible. “I’ll let you change.”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Nothing major?! Dorian was nearly always at some level of annoyance with Dorcas but her blasé response to nearly dying was infuriating. "Scratches don't put you in a hospital bed, Dorcas, not minor ones. What were you doing with a werewolf by yourself? It's not procedure." She needn't admit that her injuries came from a werewolf, Dorian had seen enough of the scars to know them on sight. What he didn't know is where she had been, and what she had been doing. Nor which werewolf had done this to her. Dorian had been sitting Tristan last night and he hadn't seen his brother yet today, instead taking both children to Emily and Andre so that he could run up to hospital after being rung. The Meadowes didn't ask many questions and Dorian knew better than to gob off about St Mungo's calling after their daughter before he knew anything factual. No sense in worrying them when Dorcas probably wouldn't even bother telling them she'd been in hospital at all.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian sat silently as the woman absorbed the information he had presented. Having handled more than his fair share of these sorts of meetings as of late, Dorian had come prepared. Leaning forward toward her, Dorian pulled a small pack of facial tissues from his coat pocket and offered it to the widow. She asked where her husband was now, and Dorian obliged. "Your husband is being transferred to St Mungo's in London," he answered, reaching back into his breast pocket and pulling out two business cards. He looked them over quickly to ensure he handed her the correct one first. The morgue was not the most welcoming of places to visit, but Dorian had known the coroner for several years now and had never felt uneasy about sending anyone there. They were always received as warmly as possible, considering the circumstances of every civilian's visit. "I have the contact information for you here."

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
“Thus far, we do not have enough evidence to make a conviction stick.” Especially with the way the wizengamot was ruling these days. Had they arrested the two, they would have been out on the street within a day. If they wanted to stop these sick bastards, they would need a lot more fighting power. “However,” Dorian passed the second file to Roux, “my informant tells me Grimes and Lunfete will be meeting with Harold Merchester this afternoon at the Port of Liverpool. Merchester has a history of smuggling illegal goods into the country.” The second file was little more than a laundry list of Merchester’s past convictions, but the file was rather thick compared to the first one he’d shared with Roux. Harold Merchester seemed to have enough connections to get his sentences commuted or reduced, but not enough to keep him out of Azkaban altogether. He had a reputation, and a weakness Dorian hoped to exploit in order to get to the much more sinister pair of criminals. Human trafficking was difficult enough to curb, but werewolf trafficking and the slaughter and sale of werewolf organs on the black market was something new and altogether disturbing. “We’ll be surveilling the meeting. Anything we can use to get a warrant or make a viable arrest is what we're after today.”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The widow already looked tired and unwell, Dorian knew the news he was about to share with her would not be easy but it was best to come out with it properly. “Last night your husband was in an altercation and was killed.” Plain language, direct and to the point. That was what they had taught him in the academy. It had seemed cold to him initially, but any ambiguity in the delivery could leave confusion or misguided hope. “We believe he was held against his will in a flat outside of Manchester, and we are looking into who might have been involved, but unfortunately I do not have any information on the suspect or suspects to share with you at this time.” The Dark Mark, Lord Voldemort’s identifier, had hovered over the flat, signaling to the MLE that something had happened, though outwardly the building was unassuming. Not every murder or disappearance that was attributed to the Death Eaters was accompanied by Lord Voldemort’s morbid calling card, and Dorian was certain the fact that this man’s relationship to the former Black heir had something to do with why his death was singled out for such fanfare.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian liked Christopher Devereaux. He was a hard worker and didn’t often get caught up in social dramas like present company was known to do. He reminded Dorian a bit of himself when he was younger, and based on the way Dorcas continually flirted with Dorian, the older Auror did not see where the disconnect was between Devereaux and Meadowes. At least on her end. He very much understood why the younger man would be wary of getting involved with Dorcas; she was…difficult.
He allowed Dorcas her little moment of superiority before she turned and headed back into her hospital room, giving Dorian another view of the aftermath of her accident. Dorian sucked on his teeth, jaw tense, then turned and headed back to the matron’s station he had passed only a few doors away. After a brief explanation, the witch seated at the desk allowed Dorian to send a message to the Ministry asking for one of the secretaries to fetch Dorcas’ duffle bag and bring it down to St Mungo’s at their earliest convenience. Having held up his half of the bargain, Dorian returned to Dorcas’ hospital room and pushed the door shut behind him. “The healer said you were pretty banged up. ‘Lucky to be alive’ was the phrase he used. What on earth happened?”

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The bottle was perfectly chilled and felt especially cool against Dorian’s hand which had previously been balled up inside his pants pocket as he struggled to come up with a way out of this conversation. Killian seemed like a perfectly fine lad, but Dorian was feeling old now and thinking about the last time he had felt truly comfortable in a social setting such as this seemed to age him even further. Mercifully, Killian made an excuse to leave and Dorian nodded his appreciation for the beer silently as the boy departed, turning instead to Freya and her fiancé Gabe who had found themselves at the bar.
Waiting for a lull in the conversation so that he was not interrupting the couple proved to be the best bit of luck Dorian could have hoped for. Leo barged into the room, full of dramatic flair (even for Leo, which was saying a lot), and summoned Dorian to the barbecue. ‘Business’. A wink. Leo was up to something and it did not take Dorian’s years of experience as an Auror to see that. Leo would explain in his own time and if not, Dorian would pester him until he found out what he was up to. “Sure thing,” he replied, giving Leo a little salute as he took his beer and himself out to the poolside where he could finally find a little peace in having a purpose he could throw himself into.
If it were possible, there were even more people outside than in. It made sense, obviously, but it meant he had a lot of cooking to keep up with if he was going to keep all these mouths full of food and not of conversations in his direction. Jasper was getting a drink at the end of the foods table, and Dorian clapped his shoulder in a friendly greeting as he rounded the table. “Hey, mate. I didn’t know you were here already. I might have not hidden in the house as long as I had, had I known.” He probably would have, but Jasper was a good enough friend that Dorian felt more comfortable at this party with him here. Dorian turned his attention next to the witch Jasper had just been greeting. “Dorian Humbert,” he said politely, shifting his beer bottle to his left hand and offering his right to the younger woman. She looked familiar but Dorian didn’t know her and assumed she was just a familiar face from hospital; between his work bringing him there and some of his friends being healers, Dorian recognized several mystery faces without having any names to match.

My promise to you always and forever
Upon their return to the living room, Dorian was horrified to discover that a more party-like party had begun. The lights were turned down low, music was blaring, and people were dancing and drinking as if they were at a nightclub. Someone was even calling for Alastor Moody to flex his chest muscles. The idea of a surprise party was even less appealing now than it had been at his arrival, but he had agreed to one drink and he was a man of his word, if nothing else.
Colorful lights dazzled above them, and Freya’s dress nearly blinded Dorian as he passed by, trying desperately to avoid being pulled in for a dance. Dorian was a decent dancer, but he preferred ballroom dancing or at least something with steps he could learn. The off-the-cuff grinding sort of dancing that was coming into vogue these days did not inspire him to join in the frivolities. A server passed in front of him and Leo with an assortment of hors d'oeuvre and Dorian stopped them to ask where he could find some wine. A few moments later a glass of merlot was in his hand. “So how long did you know about this whole thing?” he asked Leo, eyeing him suspiciously. "And why did you not warn me?"

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
“There's a reason you're my emergency contact and not him.” Yet she didn’t elaborate and having known Dorcas well enough for the last several years, Dorian knew he didn’t want to ask. Her relationship with her husband was bizarre and not something Dorian would ever dare to claim he understood. In fact, despite Dorcas being considered a friend, Dorian understood very little about how she worked. He could predict her behavior well enough, but actually why she behaved the way she did was simply baffling. He had found it easier to just not question it. “I’m sure he’s figured out something was wrong when you didn’t come home last night, but if you’d rather, I can have someone from the Ministry bring over your work bag.” He wasn’t going to pull an agent off an assignment just to deliver a duffle full of clothing (Merlin, please let it only be full of clothing) but he also wasn’t going to sit around chatting up Dorcas in a towel. A secretary or intern could manage the job well enough. “You’ll need to stop shouting, though.”

“Not too hurt to be causing a commotion, I see.” Dorian had only been a few doors away from his intended destination when a toweled Dorcas emerged from her hospital room and began demanding clothes. He closed the distance between them, evaluating her. Her arm looked mangled and the sight of it set Dorian’s jaw tense. He recognized the scars easily enough, they were unmistakable. “I’ll ring Rodolphus and have him bring you something when he comes.” Dorian knew from previous experiences at hospital with Dorcas that she was unlikely to put on the hospital dressing gown.

A drink, while not typically Dorian’s choice of coping strategy, had come in handy whenever large emotions overtook the unusually uptight Auror. “Just one glass of wine,” he said aloud, as if Leo would be monitoring him. “But as it is my party, regretfully, I suppose it could be a rather large one.” Dorian would never forgive himself if he was drunk in front of Ariel.

“Right on time, Cadet L’Amour.” Saying the surname aloud felt uncomfortable ever since Dorian had read it on the letter his birth mother had addressed to him, even before he had confirmed his suspicions by reading Roux’s personnel file. “Have a seat, we’ve got plenty to get on with today.” Dorian passed the first file across his desk so that it was facing the trainee. Inside were surveillance photographs of two men talking outside of a café. They were today’s targets and Roux would need to familiarize himself with both men before they set out on a short undercover mission.
