Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
This wasn’t working out. No matter how much Dorian enjoyed Immy’s company, no matter how smart and clever and attractive she was, there wasn’t any future for the pair of them. Dorian had been suspecting it for some time now but he tried his best to make it work, regardless of their interfering schedules. It seemed Immy was trying too, but they just couldn’t make it work. Dorian and Immy had been dating for several months now, but they had yet to see a single date through to the end. One of them was always being pulled away to handle an emergency, whether it was at the hospital or in pursuit of a dark wizard halfway across the country. You-Know-Who’s Death Eaters had been giving Dorian more than his fair share of overtime hours these days but it would have been unfair to claim that was the only factor in his fractured dating life. It wasn’t one thing, but several things. Several big things. It wasn’t fair to either of them to keep at it like this, Dorian knew what he needed to do.
He had made sure it was one of her nights off and one that she was not on call. He had to minimize the chance of her being called away on emergency. He did the same with his own schedule, even going as far as asking Dorcas to cover his shift for him and risking her barrage of nosey questions about his plans or making some sexual innuendo. Thankfully she had agreed without any follow ups and Dorian actually held hope that he would be able to evade her snooping until he was ready to talk about it but in the back of his mind he was preparing to have to explain it come tomorrow morning just to get her to leave him be. But he couldn’t think about that know, he needed to focus on the task at hand. Immy was on her way, knowing that Dorian had wanted to speak with her about something serious, and he had a roast in the oven that was just about ready to come out. Ending a romantic relationship was not something Dorian took pleasure in, and in truth it had been several years since he had even been in this position and never had it been the case that he still cared for the woman he was ending things with. This was going to be a hard night, but he hoped some good wine, a nice dinner, and honesty would help to soften the blow. The table was set – no candles or flowers in sight, so as to not give off the wrong impression, and Ariel was already in bed for the evening (thank Merlin). Dorian checked his watch then the oven, then his watch again. Time was already moving slowly; not a good sign for the evening ahead of him.

Another date. Immy looked forward to spending time with Dorian, she truly did, but everything seemed to get in their way. She wanted tonight to go well because, honestly, nothing ever went well for them. Before they'd started dating they'd had trips to the library with Ariel but that was all in friendship, now they were trying to take things to another level, it seemed the universe was putting up protest to every date they had. She would be called off to work or he would. There was always something coming between them meaning they'd never finished a date. It was too strenuous for a new relationship, add to that a child and Immy felt certain that this wasn't something that would work out. It was sad, Dorian was a lovely guy, and Immy could see them having a wonderful relationship, but not right now. The time just wasn't right for either of them. She wasn't going to leave the job she loved over a guy she barely knew and she wouldn't want Dorian to even think about leaving his job. They were in jobs with high demands, there was no changing that. The best they could do was make the most of tonight and talk about what to do next, surely she wasn't the only one to have noticed threat dating one another seemed near impossible. Immy pulled her left hand through her cloak and checked her watch and then rang the doorbell, she was precisely on time. A meal at Dorian's home seemed intimate, he was inviting her into her home on a romantic level and Immy wasn't too sure that was entirely a good thing but part of her was just excited to see Dorian again.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The doorbell rang and Dorian's heart sank. A piece of him was hoping that she'd send word from the hospital that she'd been called away for work once more and reprieve him of this horrendous duty that laid before him. Her appearance on his front porch dashed any chances of escaping the inevitable, and while it was sure to not be a wholly pleasant evening given the circumstances, Dorian knew it was for the best. He pulled the roast from the oven and set it on the cook top gently, then slipped off his oven mitts and headed toward the foyer. Pulling open the door, his heart sank once more at actually laying eyes on her. She was lovely and he felt like a cad before she'd even stepped foot inside his home. "Wow," he said in a complimentary tone. "You look lovely." He pulled the door open wide and stepped aside to give her space to enter. "You're right on time. I just pulled the roast out."

It was silly to feel nervous. She felt more nervous now than she had on their first date. Immy just couldn't shake the feeling that things just really couldn't progress for the two of them. Not a single date had been seen to completion and while they were almost completely guaranteed a quiet date night together with no interruptions, there was a chance something could go wrong, it was just what happened for them. But that wasn't why Immy was feeling nervous, her nerves were because she knew that this couldn't keep going on. She was disappointed that she never got a chance to cook a meal for Dorian, to share the recipes she'd been cooking since she was able to hold a wooden spoon and stir.
The door opened and Immy's smile spread. It was wonderful to see Dorian, it really was. She stepped into his home thinking it was strange, that they'd known one another for over a year now. It was strange to think that Leo's barbecue had been over 12 months ago. It had been lovely meeting Dorian there and it had been wonderful getting to know him these past 12 months, and little Ariel of course, but a romantic relationship just wasn't sustainable. Immy hoped they'd still be on one another's lives, and of course they'd see one another at Leo's barbecue. Immy was sure they'd see one another often enough, and spend time together like before they were dating, but dating did seem as though it had to come to an end.
"Thank you," she pulled her cloak off and hung it over her arm, "You look dashing as always, Mr Humbert." She giggle lightly, he was a very handsome man but he always seemed to be in a suit of some kind. Immy would have loved to just see him in a tee shirt, shorts and flip flops, but she supposed that wouldn't happen anytime soon. Perhaps a few of them could go to the beach in the summer, no doubt little Ariel would love a day at the seaside, and maybe then she'd see him out of a suit. "Mm, the food smells amazing." A roast. Classic English cuisine, not that Immy would ever complain about a roast, she loved a good roast and she loved that Dorian had gone to such efforts for their date tonight.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian’s eyebrows raised ever so slightly as her compliment gave his ego a little boost. He was not the sort of man to indulge himself in thinking of himself as attractive but Immy always made him feel as though he was the most handsome man in the room. At the moment it was an utter fact, but nevermind the particulars. “Hopefully it tastes as good as it smells. Let me take that from you,” he said, lifting her cloak from her arm and moving toward the cloak cupboard with it. “Would you like some wine?” He opened the cupboard door and hung her cloak carefully before turning around to face Immy once more. “I have a nice merlot uncorked, but there’s also a chardonnay chilling if you’d prefer something lighter.” As if offering alcohol would make the evening’s events unfold more easily.

Immy had a quick glance about as Dorian took her cloak. His home wasn't exactly what she imagined, but it did suit him. "The merlot would be lovely, thanks." She smiled. She was very much accustomed to a good red, from Tinto de Verano and Sangria on her Spanish side of the family, to mulled wine, a winter classic at home on her English side. She was by no means some kind of wine snob, almost the opposite, really, she'd drink just about any kind of wine and be happy with it, just so long as it wasn't sour. Bitter was fine, but sour was a big no. "It's nice to have an evening where we can both have a drink." She mused out loud. Usually either she or Dorian was on call which meant not being able to indulge in a stronger than juice drink, but with tonight's evening clear for them both, they'd be able to have a proper toast to a proper date, even if it was their only one.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
“Merlot it is.” Dorian gestured for her to follow him into the living room, which opened up onto the dining room and kitchen. The back wall of windows gave a perfect view of the sunset over the garden and cast a lovely pinkish light into the dining room. Dorian picked up one of the wine glasses he had set out and poured her a glass. “It is a rare occasion,” he remarked, a somber tone in his voice. “Ariel is asleep upstairs, otherwise I would give you a tour. This is pretty much it for the ground floor.” One large open-concept room, with a toilet and a cloak cupboard. Upstairs were bedrooms and a reading room that doubled as Dorian’s home office. It was a small, semi-detached home but enormous compared to the modest flat he had purchased before Ariel came into his life. She deserved a proper home to grow up in.
He pulled a chair out for Immy to sit before he poured himself a glass of merlot. “Cheers.” Why?! Cheers to what? To breaking up? This was going terribly already, he felt like an utter cad.

Immy followed Dorian through his living room and through to his kitchen, casual living space, dining room. An open plan setting that was really quite lovely. Immy took her wine and enjoyed the pink hue of the room that the sky cast through the large window. "Your home is impeccable." And it was very Dorian, she thought. Turning back towards Dorian, Immy took a sip of her drink. He pulled a chair out for her at the dining table and she sat, thinking she'd never before had a boyfriend as thoughtful as Dorian, but in fairness it wasn't hard, she hadn't had many romantic interests and the ones she'd had were not of the same caliber. Her type was usually far more unpolished than the man sat across from her tonight, but there was also more passion from them, not that she didn't think Dorian was capable of tearing a woman's clothes off and absolutely ravishing her, but Immy just felt as though she would never be that woman. Was it a lack of spark? Possibly, although Immy felt their inability to see a date to completion was the main cause of that. They got on so well as friends, yet somehow that didn't translate quite as well into dating, but it was nice to sit down and have a meal with Dorian and get to know him better, even if their relationship did seem to be flatlining far too early on. Immy smiled and raised her glass to Dorian's before she brought it back and took a sip of wine again.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The first half of their meal went along as most of them did. Their conversation skills had never once been in question, and Immy seemed to just innately understand what Dorian meant when he talked about the way certain places had a feeling to them, or how you could have conflicting emotions over the same event. Dorian wanted to paint a picture of the better parts of their relationship, to set the stage for how, if she wanted to, they could transition back to friendship because they really did get on so well. And as they were talking, laughing about the good times, he paused and set his fork down on his half-empty plate. “I just realized all of that happened before I asked you on a proper date.” And he had just realized that. He had known for some time now that his relationship with Immy had no momentum, and he knew their getting on wasn’t the issue, but everything since they had become a couple, while lovely, seemed to require a level of work he had not previously noticed until this moment. It had taken him by surprise. “I sort of feel responsible now for our lack of more recent stories, as if I robbed us of something by wanting more with you. I do enjoy spending time with you, Immy. I hope you know that. Even if we can’t manage to see the end of an evening through together.”

The ease of conversation was wonderful, but that was how all their dates started. There was never a problem with being able to connect with one another, there was a problem with seeing a date through. New relationships couldn't afford to be difficult, they took time and nurturing, and without that it wasn't going to stand a chance. No matter how much either of them wanted more, the truth of the matter was that they couldn't nurture a new relationship together, so was there anything they could do? Well, yes, but Immy didn't much like the thought of it, even if it seemed inevitable. Dorian's words were kind but they held a tone of sorrow. It clicked for Immy that Dorian was feeling much the same way as her, only he was further along in the progression of what needed to happen next. She was only slowly coming to the conclusion that things were better before, but it seemed that perhaps Dorian, a perceptive Auror, had seen it coming for a little while. Immy smiled, a sad sort of smile but she was happy, too. She was glad that they had given this a shot, because had they not she might have been left wondering 'what if', well right now, she knew. She placed her hand on top of Dorian's. "I understand." She said, feeling as though you could hear crickets chirp were it not for the light background music. All those fond memories had happened as friends, their dates held a certain charm, but it wasn't the same, nor what a relationship should be, really. "Our time together has been incredible, you have given me so many fond memories that I will always cherish."

She placed her hand over his, and Dorian cupped hers with his other hand. She was really quite remarkable, but it simply wasn’t the time for them. Perhaps later on when the world was not so chaotic, though Dorian knew better than to hold his breath. Immy wouldn’t be single for long. With her charms and warm heart, she would attract many suitors that could offer so much more than Dorian was able to provide. “I only wish I could have given you more.”

It was a break up, a mutual break up, although neither really said as much because the words were not needed. They both knew that this wasn’t working and it couldn’t continue, despite their desires to see this through. Friendship was the best course for them moving forward, and Immy looked forward to keeping Dorian in her life as a friend. He was a good man, a good father and it would be an honour to count him among her confidant. “I believe,” She said, taking a moment to make sure she had the words straight in her mind, “That moving forward, we are going to have a tremendous friendship.” Immy smiled, knowing that what she said was certainly how she wanted their future to be, although a break up was still a break up, so she hoped that they both could take a little time and come back without too much awkwardness, the last thing Immy wanted was for Dorian to feel uncomfortable around her. “This evening has been lovely,” And it had been, they’d enjoyed some good memories together, but it was time for her to leave, “but I think I should head home now.” She hoped he wouldn’t take it personally, she just felt it was for the best that she have a little time to reflect.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
A break up was not ideal but if they could manage to reclaim some of the friendship that had been lost in this misguided attempt at love, Dorian would be elated. The direction they were headed now was not the one they had intended and when one gets lost the only options are to continue travelling down the doomed highway or to reverse course and try a different path. Immy suggested she leave and while Dorian did not want the evening to end on such a somber note, it really was the only option for them. "Of course," he said solemnly. Walking her to the door, Dorian pulled her cloak from the closet and wrapped it around her shoulders. His hand found its way to her cheek and he held her face for a moment, unsuccessfully attempting to gather his thoughts into a coherent sentence. He smiled dolefully and let his hand drop from her face.

Dorian was ever the gentleman, and it was a shame that this relationship didn't work out, but he would always be a friend to her, although after this she was probably going to need a little space. It wasn't as if they could slip back into a pre-romantic relationship all at once, she was going to need a little time to process the break up, although she was certain it wouldn't take her very long, it was an amicable break up. Immy slipped her hand over Dorian's and held it for a couple of seconds, gazing at him. He really was an amazing man, but now was not their time and she doubted it ever would be. Still, it had been a pleasure. "Thank you for a delicious meal," And it truly had been tasty, "You're an excellent cook." She took his hand away from her face and leant forward to place a kiss on his cheek. "Goodnight, Dorian." Immy pulled the font door open and with one last glance at Dorian, left his lovely home.
