Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
A little brown envelope that sat in Dorian’s inbox. More like this one had just been delivered and their numbers seemed to rise with every passing week. Only a few days earlier Dorian had delivered three in one day, standing there stoically as a loved one pleaded for some kind of mistake and made deals with a higher power if only they could turn back the clock. Dorian delivered each one personally, if he’d been the Auror assigned to the case, and while standing in the doorway watching a life fall to pieces in front of him was soul shattering, it was nothing compared to the ever growing number of envelopes who had no one to be delivered to. Entire families eradicated, chased out of the country, or simply vanished off the face of the earth. If there were darker days to come than this, Dorian wasn’t certain he’d be able to withstand them. At the very least some perplexing mysteries had been recently clarified to him, a small condolence on an otherwise unfortunate existence. To think that there had been a time not too long ago that Dorian would have scoffed at the idea of working with a vigilante organization such as the Order of the Phoenix, but there was little to be done about their current standing by following protocols; most of which had been heavily modified since the new administration had come in. His membership in the secret organization was, perhaps, not the legal path but it was the right path, and the only path that offered Ariel a worthwhile future. Dorian frowned at the brown envelope, his jaw tensed, and then snatched the notice from his inbox and rose from his chair with determination.
It was a small, unassuming home in Middlesex set on a crowded street. Dorian approached the walk, hands stuffed in his trouser pockets as stepped over a series of toys that laid on the garden path. He could practically taste his heartbeat as he pushed the buzzer on the front door and pulled the envelope from the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

Andromeda practically collapsed into her armchair. Nymphadora was unwell and upstairs in bed, tucked away, recovering from a night of zero sleep. Andromeda wasn't quite so lucky, she had to wait for the washing to complete itself and then hang it up to dry. She probably had a quick five minutes to just relax but once the washing was all hung up she was definitely climbing into her bed next to Nymphadora and falling to sleep in quite probably record time.
It felt as though it had been fifteen seconds since her cheeks had touched the soft cushions of the armchair when the buzzer went. She groaned and let out a sigh. She stood to her feet more slowly than she usually would have, and made her way out of the living room and headed for the front door. She caught a glimpse of herself in the round hallway mirror. Her messy bun was messier than usual, her hair was dissolved and she had a lot of little fly away hairs just standing out. Her puffy looking eyes showed how tired she was. For the rest of the walk down the hall to the front door Andromeda tried flattening her hair back. She peeked through the peephole to see a smartly dressed man in a suit. She stepped away from the door and placed her left hand on the door handle, her right on her wand in her pocket. She pulled the door open timidly, ready to slam it shut at the slightest sign of trouble, all she could think was 'not today' and how to get upstairs to Nymphadora to get them away, a plan she'd gone over several times, thankfully she wasn't as dim as her family thought and there were protections on her home to protect against incoming spells, but it couldn't protect against all spells. "Who are you?" She asked, waiting for a response, ready to run.

He could hear footsteps from the other side of the door and took a steadying breath as he prepared for the short speech he’d grown far too accustomed to delivering. There wasn’t much to say and any interactions they would have would undoubtedly be short and uncomfortable, but as a man with his own little family still intact; it was his discomfort to bear. The door opened and the disheveled woman standing in front of him asked for his identity. “I am Agent Humbert with the Auror Department. I am looking for Mrs Andromeda Tonks.” He had memorized the name on his short journey from the Ministry building. How impersonal would it have been to stumble over the woman’s name or have to read it off a piece of parchment when delivering the news that her husband had been killed and she was now a widow. The absolute least he could do was know her name.

Andromeda wasn't sure what to think when the man announced himself as from the Ministry. He was an auror at that. This had to be about Ted. Had he been caught? Or perhaps something to do with her family. She had been interviewed when Bella had died, but only to cover all sides it felt. As someone that was disowned, even when things seemed painfully obvious that she wasn't involved, the Ministry still wanted to open up old wounds and prod around a little, after all, her life meant that she supposedly had motive to harm her family, but she wasn't like that, or at least she didn't think she was. Well, she could have swung for Cissa in that restaurant, but on the whole, she didn't want to harm her family. "That's me," She told him, her wand at the ready, just in case he wasn't who he said he was or just incase he wasn't as honourable as his position would lead her to believe, "Can I ask what this is pertaining to?" Because before she invited him in, she wanted to make sure this couldn't just be a quick doorstop conversation.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
She looked young, at least, too young to be a widow. The war had left hundreds of women and men grieving losses they should not have felt for decades to come. It seemed no one was an exception, not even the young. “Ma’am, I have some very bad news to share with you. Would you mind if we speak inside?” Dorian did not want to share the news of her husband’s passing in plain sight of the entire neighborhood. These things were best discussed in the comfort of the survivor’s home where they could sit for the shock of what was to come. And then there were the children. Whenever a victim left behind children it was always such a struggle for their family to tell them. Some wanted it to come from the officers, others from the family. Some even chose to hide the death for as long as possible. There was no good way of going about it, but it would have been in poor taste to discuss it on the porch.

Andromeda knew that this wasn't going to be good, but now she knew that the news this Auror was burdened with, was going to be devastating. Drommie took a deep breath and stepped back, bringing her wand to her side and tucking it behind her just a little. She was glad that Nymphadora was upstairs napping, but she was unwell, how would she take the news? Drommie knew she was jumping ahead right now, but she'd been expecting this every time the doorbell chimed. She'd prepared herself, even though she was very aware that she would have no idea how she'd react come the actual moment of truth.

Dorian gave the woman a nod of gratitude as she opened her door wider to allow him inside. He looked no further into the house than the room that she offered to him, and he sat in a chair across from the sofa, waiting for her to sit before he spoke.

Andromeda shut the front door behind the auror and made her way through to the lounge, her head a swirling mess. Humbert took a seat in the chair and Drommie shut the door behind them. If Dora got up and came downstairs then Drommie didn't want her daughter hearing anything that the auror was about to say. She felt the news, no matter what it was, would always be better coming from her, although part of her felt she shouldn't tell Dora anything, instead waiting until she was better to tell her the news. The news. Drommie was getting ahead of herself. The auror could have bene there to tell her absolutely anything. Perhaps her parents had died and Cissa was unreachable, that was possible, although in the pit of her stomach, Drommie knew what was coming and for some reason, she felt as though she had to stall, perhaps if she stalled the news then things would somehow change. "Would you care for a drink?" She asked, hoping he'd say 'yes', but knowing he was here for one purpose, and one purpose only.

“No, thank you.” Dorian took a moment, then offered, “I think you should sit, Mrs Tonks.” He gestured to the chair across from him and waited.

There was no more avoiding it, as much as she tried, Andromeda knew that it was now time to face the music, and she knew that it would be a sombre lament of sorrow. Silently Drommie crossed to the sofa and took a seat, resting her hands in her lap, clasped together as she dared not look at the man that was about to break her heart.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The widow already looked tired and unwell, Dorian knew the news he was about to share with her would not be easy but it was best to come out with it properly. “Last night your husband was in an altercation and was killed.” Plain language, direct and to the point. That was what they had taught him in the academy. It had seemed cold to him initially, but any ambiguity in the delivery could leave confusion or misguided hope. “We believe he was held against his will in a flat outside of Manchester, and we are looking into who might have been involved, but unfortunately I do not have any information on the suspect or suspects to share with you at this time.” The Dark Mark, Lord Voldemort’s identifier, had hovered over the flat, signaling to the MLE that something had happened, though outwardly the building was unassuming. Not every murder or disappearance that was attributed to the Death Eaters was accompanied by Lord Voldemort’s morbid calling card, and Dorian was certain the fact that this man’s relationship to the former Black heir had something to do with why his death was singled out for such fanfare.

There it was. Sharp like a knife and thrust in deep. There had been no beating about the bush, no condolences or attempt at pity or sorrow, just what had happened. An "altercation". That was what had ended her husband's life. Andromeda's heart sunk lower, she hadn't thought it was possible but hearing the actual news was far worse than what she had anticipated, yet there was more. Andromeda attempted to stop her lower lip from quivering but it wasn't possible. She felt a single tear start to roll down her right cheek and she wiped it away with her hand quickly. She wanted to say something, she wanted to ask questions but she knew if she opened her mouth that she couldn't guarantee what would come out. The auror said he had no suspects but she felt he was just covering up. He worked for the ministry, the ministry that thought of her husband's life as worthless. Her family, the ministry, death eaters. The world was out to get people like her husband and Andromeda wanted to do something, she wanted to hurt someone, but what could she do? Right now there was nothing she could do or say. He husband was dead. "Where is he?" She croaked. She wanted to see Ted, although she knew it probably wasn't wise, she couldn't be sure what her husband looked like but he probably didn't look like himself.

Dorian sat silently as the woman absorbed the information he had presented. Having handled more than his fair share of these sorts of meetings as of late, Dorian had come prepared. Leaning forward toward her, Dorian pulled a small pack of facial tissues from his coat pocket and offered it to the widow. She asked where her husband was now, and Dorian obliged. "Your husband is being transferred to St Mungo's in London," he answered, reaching back into his breast pocket and pulling out two business cards. He looked them over quickly to ensure he handed her the correct one first. The morgue was not the most welcoming of places to visit, but Dorian had known the coroner for several years now and had never felt uneasy about sending anyone there. They were always received as warmly as possible, considering the circumstances of every civilian's visit. "I have the contact information for you here."

It was the wrong question or at least she felt as though it was wrong, somehow. Drommie's hands were quivering in her lap and she tried to keep her face strong but her chin was trembling. Drommie wanted to know exactly what had happened to her Teddy, but the words wouldn't come out of her mouth, instead she accepted a tissue and business cards from the auror and tried to think of how she was ever going to break this to Nymphadora. How could you tell a child that their father had been murdered? How was there any possible way that Drommie could walk up those stairs to her daughter's room and deliver the most heartbreaking, soul-crushing news imaginable? "Thank you." Drommie used the tissue she had taken and wiped under her eyes, wondering just who she could reach out to. None of her friendships these days were all that significant and she had no family she could lean on. Ted's parents were gone and now, so was Ted.

He could see the mixed expressions on her face; sorrow, pain, confusion. Most of all there was a hopelessness. Dorian felt for the woman. He had been on her side of this conversation himself but he wouldn't presume to truly understand how she felt in that moment. Every loss was different. "I'll be heading the investigation, so if you have any information that might be of use to us, your husband's business dealings, enemies, anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, please contact me." He handed over the second business card which held his contact details printed over the MLE's department logo. "I am so very sorry for your loss, Mrs Tonks." There was little more to be said at this moment and Dorian, unfortunately, had other investigations to continue with today.
