Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Dorian didn’t begrudge Roux his closeness with the man who happened to be the biological father to them both. Dorian had grown up happy, with wonderful parents of his own. He knew from his biological mother’s letter that he’d recently come to acquire that she and Marcel had been very young when they gave up their baby, and Dorian couldn’t blame either of them for the choice that they had made. It would have been a difficult one, or so he suspected, never having had the opportunity to be in a similar position. He had Ariel now, and if there was ever a situation where he had to be separated from her... Dorian’s jaw tensed as his thoughts drifted to a place he did not want them to go. He took a sip of his coffee and slowed his pace, chocolate eyes scanning for any sight of their suspects. “Director? That’s impressive.” And it was. Clearly not being a teenaged father had been the right choice for the man. “You’ll be in good hands, then, should any assignments go sideways.” Dorian said, almost absentmindedly as he was now fully enthralled in trying to scan his memories for any run-ins with the Director of St Mungo’s. He had spent his fair share of time in hospital for one reason or another, but he couldn’t remember any situations in which the director would have been involved. Perhaps he could ask Immy her thoughts on the man, though they were still in that awkward place since ending their short-lived romantic relationship and hadn’t quite bounced back into friendship yet. He didn’t quite trust talking with Leo about it just yet, the man’s ego was far too large to be held down by polite requests from Dorian not to say anything to Marcel. Dorian could only imagine Leo trying to push Dorian out of his comfort zone by hinting at the connection between his best mate with his boss, to his boss.

Thankfully, Dorian seemed able to freely walk past the opened gates that led to the shipping dock without so much as a second glance from anyone nearby. He was not so lucky in the conversation department, as talk of Roux’s father seemed to follow him. “I would suspect we would require a bit more in common than just coffee preferences,” Dorian said, attempting to still sounds casual even though he knew damn well that there was more in common with Marcel L'Amour than even Roux was aware of. Dorian took a drink of his coffee, eyes scanning the towering containers. “Are you close with your father?” he asked, trying to be polite and certainly nothing more.

Of course, the drama department had been brought in by London James. Dorian couldn’t help but smirk. Her sister would have been proud, he thought, remembering Paris’ stories about her own wild adventures. Then there were the adventures that she always tried to get Dorian to join on, though rarely did so successfully. She wanted dancing and movies, Dorian wanted home cooked meals and sitting under the moonlight watching the stars. They had been an odd couple looking from the outside in; the quiet, controlled Auror and the wild, party-loving Astronomy professor. He still missed her. “No. I just brought a watermelon. Perhaps I should check in on it, though, see if its brawling with the cantaloupe.” He flipped the meat onto the other side and gave her a look that, if she couldn’t tell already, meant he’d been joking. A rare sight. “When was the last time you saw her?” he asked quietly, eyes trained on the grill. He would never forget his last moments with Paris. He hoped London’s had been better.

The casual conversation from his trainee made Dorian’s jaw tighten. Roux had no idea that when he spoke of his father, he was actually speaking of Dorian’s biological father, too. A man who also drank his coffee black. Dorian tried to brush it off as a mere coincidence, after all, millions of people probably drank it the exact same way so why was it so jarring to know he shared this trait with his biological father? “I never was much for the weak stuff,” Dorian replied, trying to keep Roux from thinking anything strange of Dorian’s response to a seemingly innocuous remark about Marcel L’Amour. Dorian took his coffee in the little cardboard cup and headed across the street, wondering if they would be able to walk in past the gates without trouble and definitely not just walking away from the conversation.

Dorian turned to watch as the commotion in the pool grew louder, more vulgar words being spewed by the brunette who seemed to have come out of nowhere to cause chaos at the barbecue. He vaguely recognized her as the reception witch from this Ministry atrium, but other than that he knew nothing of her or what slight the blonde in the pool had made against her. Dorian watched in disgust at the display before turning back to the grill, shaking his head. “Where Leo meets these people...” he complained, mostly to himself, not realizing it was the young healer beside him who had inadvertently introduced the pair at last year’s barbecue.

Roux suggested they get a coffee from the truck where the men from the dock were heading, and Dorian indicated his agreement with a nod. Queuing up behind the hard hatted men, Dorian glanced over to the docks but from where they stood there was no sign of Grimes, Lunfete, or Merchester. “What’ll it be?” Dorian looked back to the queue where he and Roux were now next in line. “Small coffee, black with two sugars, please.” Gerald looked bored as he took their orders, and Dorian silently agreed that doing the same thing day in and day out must have been tedious. He liked uniformity and consistency, but his job was a jumble of different aspects every single day and he loved it. He had only thought of leaving the Ministry for something quieter recently for Ariel’s sake, and since then he had even joined Albus Dumbledore’s vigilante group, so he clearly wasn’t made for the quiet life of coffee making or office work.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Roux stepped out of the fireplace and instantly began dusting himself off. Dorian found himself watching the lad with hawk-like attention, wondering if that was what he himself looked like when fussing over soot on his jacket, or their shared father for that matter. Dorian straightened himself up and turned toward the door, pushing thoughts of his complicated family history firmly out of his mind. “Just keep a low profile,” he offered to Roux as he headed out of the deserted building and into the street. The sun shone brightly but there was a cool breeze that brought with it the smell of fresh sea water and rotting fish. Dorian disliked the smell and often tried to avoid the ocean when he could, but work sometimes beckoned him to places such as this, as did Ariel’s desire to play on the beach from time to time.
Pedestrians walked in the opposite direction and Dorian moved off the pavement to allow them space as they passed, talking excitedly about whatever plans they had made for their day. There were enough people about that Dorian and Roux would not look out of place on the docks, but regardless he took measured steps as they neared their destination, taking care to not draw any unwanted attention their way. They passed a series of billboards which were torn and graffitied, then an empty lot with construction fencing around it but no further sign of improvement attempts. “There,” he said discretely, his eyes gazing across the road at a series of container docks behind a high brick wall and an open gate. Men in hardhats were walking through the gates toward a coffee truck that had set up at the intersection. A large blue sign read “Gerald’s Coffee” in hand painted, white letters on the side of the truck. From where he stood, Dorian could see a ship in port and cranes working to move large containers to shipping carts on the nearby railway line. They needed a closer vantage point.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Did she... Did she suffer? Did she go quickly? What horribly awful, awkward questions were going through this poor girl’s mind before she decided not to ask anything of her dead sister’s last boyfriend? The smell of burnt burgers, swiftly accompanied by the sound of Jasper burning himself on the grill, solidified Dorian’s decision. “Maybe I ought to help out here for a bit,” he said, gaze shifting between London’s and Jasper’s faces, “No offense, Jas. Ger needs a drink and you could probably use a bit of ice on that.” He gave Jasper a reassuring look, quick but still conveying his thanks at the attempt. He looked back to London. “If you don’t mind me helping, that is.” Crashing sounded from inside the house, and a woman shrieking at someone near the pool seemed to cause enough commotion around them that Dorian was able to slip around to the barbeque before anyone could complain and began transferring more meat to the grill.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
The girl with the spatula extended her clean hand to meet his as she introduced herself and Dorian’s grip may have tightened absentmindedly. London James was the younger sister of his former flame, and the only one of the James family Paris had ever spoken fondly of to him. Paris hadn’t often talked of her family, but she had mentioned that she was happy for her post as the school’s Astronomy professor so that she could keep an eye on her little sister. A sister who had apparently grown up and somehow gotten herself entangled in Leo’s social group. And the cad hadn’t even bothered to warn Dorian about her presence. Leo had plenty of explaining to do later, but Dorian’s thoughts were only with his mate for the briefest of moments before being pulled back to the present and the young witch shaking his hand. “Pleasure to meet you,” he said through an inadvertently clenched jaw.
To Dorian’s knowledge, London would have had no idea who he was, nor that Jasper’s offer to let Dorian wander off to find Geralina was a clever ruse to break up what might have been a very awkward encounter. “Well, Leo had asked that I look after the barbecue, but it seems you have that all taken care of,” he said to the pair, planning on taking up Jasper’s offer the second he could get out of there without making a scene. “I could play server to Geralina, if you’re not in need of any assistance here."

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Poorly timed attempt at humor aside, Dorian generally liked Roux. He was a hard worker, a damn fine trainee detective, and a hell of a lot more like Dorian than Julian, as far as half brothers went. Not that Dorian considered the pair of them family in any way. Roux most likely didn't even know his father had another son, and Dorian certainly hadn't reached out to Marcel as of yet. Dorian had questioned whether or not he even needed to contact his biological father. Ariel, Julian, and Tristan were more than enough family for the quiet man, and it wasn't as if he had grown up without the love of a mother and father. Dorian's parents had been the epitome of perfect, even if there were some times in his youth when he'd moodily claimed otherwise. His displeasure with them was always short lived and logic always brought him back to a sense of understanding. They had never lied to him, belittled him, or spoke to him as if he was incapable of understanding everything grown adults knew. He was certain that if his parents had known the identity of his birth parents, they would have informed him, but to Dorian's knowledge they had been as unaware as he had and there had never been a time where he felt the need to search for anything beyond what he had. He was fully grown now, so did he really need to seek out a man who probably hadn't given his existence a second thought in over 30 years?
Travel to Liverpool was relatively simple thanks to the Floo Network. Dorian stood in the corner of an empty room, dusting the soot off his shoulders as he waited for the green flames to subside around his partner for the day. They were a few blocks away from their intended location, but Dorian hadn't thought it wise to appear right where they intended to be, in case there were any magical wards that might tip off their suspects to the presence of onlookers.

Taking advantage pf the fact that neither husband nor wife seemed to notice his presence any longer, Dorian sneaked out of the room and into the hallway. Even after having shut the door behind him, Rodolphus' booming voice was easily overheard, but it faded as Dorian's feet moved him further away from the quarreling couple and in the direction of someone who might have been able to point him in the direction of Dorcas' missing wand.

Dorian did not want to be caught between the pair of them, but as Rodolphus had not moved from the doorway, Dorian had little choice of where else to go. He took a step to the side as Dorcas attempted to send her husband away. "Rodolphus," he said in a polite, yet short greeting. "I was just leaving," he explained, hoping that would be enough for the younger man to move out of the way.

"One of our best Aurors was just attacked and nearly killed, so no, I am not going to pull another Auror off whatever case he's working just to play delivery boy." There was a ruckus in the hallway and Dorian wondered if maybe the secretary had caused a scene, but he heard a man's voice and decided otherwise. "I'll track down your wand. You're welcome by the way," he added with as much sarcasm as the normally dry wizard could muster. Dorian's hand moved to the doorknob but before he could reach it, the door burst open and Dorcas' husband filled the doorframe.
