The compliment was appreciated, but unnecessary. Especially from Julian. Dorian had grown quite fond of his brother since they'd first met and he inferred that Julian felt the same towards him. The notable hostility between them had all but vanished and while Dorian couldn't say for certain that their relationship now mirrored that of any other siblings - never having any to compare it to - he did consider Julian a part of his family now. Although, clearly the man didn't know him well enough to know he did not like parties. Nor gifts. "You really shouldn't have-" he began, but a booming voice interjected from behind them. Giving a quarter turn, Dorian noted that Alastor Moody was there and insisting that Dorian open his gift in front of everyone. Bollocks. Dorian gave a proper smile, though tight, and looked back to Julian. "I suppose now is as good a time as any." It wasn't.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
This wasn’t working out. No matter how much Dorian enjoyed Immy’s company, no matter how smart and clever and attractive she was, there wasn’t any future for the pair of them. Dorian had been suspecting it for some time now but he tried his best to make it work, regardless of their interfering schedules. It seemed Immy was trying too, but they just couldn’t make it work. Dorian and Immy had been dating for several months now, but they had yet to see a single date through to the end. One of them was always being pulled away to handle an emergency, whether it was at the hospital or in pursuit of a dark wizard halfway across the country. You-Know-Who’s Death Eaters had been giving Dorian more than his fair share of overtime hours these days but it would have been unfair to claim that was the only factor in his fractured dating life. It wasn’t one thing, but several things. Several big things. It wasn’t fair to either of them to keep at it like this, Dorian knew what he needed to do.
He had made sure it was one of her nights off and one that she was not on call. He had to minimize the chance of her being called away on emergency. He did the same with his own schedule, even going as far as asking Dorcas to cover his shift for him and risking her barrage of nosey questions about his plans or making some sexual innuendo. Thankfully she had agreed without any follow ups and Dorian actually held hope that he would be able to evade her snooping until he was ready to talk about it but in the back of his mind he was preparing to have to explain it come tomorrow morning just to get her to leave him be. But he couldn’t think about that know, he needed to focus on the task at hand. Immy was on her way, knowing that Dorian had wanted to speak with her about something serious, and he had a roast in the oven that was just about ready to come out. Ending a romantic relationship was not something Dorian took pleasure in, and in truth it had been several years since he had even been in this position and never had it been the case that he still cared for the woman he was ending things with. This was going to be a hard night, but he hoped some good wine, a nice dinner, and honesty would help to soften the blow. The table was set – no candles or flowers in sight, so as to not give off the wrong impression, and Ariel was already in bed for the evening (thank Merlin). Dorian checked his watch then the oven, then his watch again. Time was already moving slowly; not a good sign for the evening ahead of him.

Vienna appeared to have noticed Dorian’s gaze and it made the man’s jaw clench. Now he had the undesirable choice between walking over and greeting the pair or pretending as though he hadn’t seen them and hope he could ignore their presence as long as they were together. The latter was obviously not an option. Dorian touched Dorcas’ shoulder gently to announce his presence as she cuddled with Ariel and then leaned near her ear to speak softly. “Would you mind keeping an eye on her for a moment?” he asked, knowing Dorcas hadn’t passed up an opportunity to care for the blonde little witch since she was an infant (back when Dorcas still pretended to dislike babies altogether).
His confident gait made for a short walk across the patio, zig-zagging around the little fairies and the parents running after them that crossed his path until he reached his half-brother and … his date? Had they come here together or was this a chance meeting? Dorian couldn’t seem to wrap his mind around what was happening, so instead he put on a polite smile and said, “I wasn’t sure you were going to make it, Julian.” Tristan was running around behind them with a group of children, and made for an easy conversational point. “It seems Tristan is enjoying himself.” Dorian’s expression remained the same as he turned to Paris’ sister. “Lovely to see you again, Mrs Rosier.” He wanted to ask how the pair knew each other, and why they were here, together but instead he stuffed his hands in his pockets and prayed for any sort of interruption. This was certainly not the company he was expecting to spend his time with.

Chocolate eyes scanned the spines stacked neatly on the shelf before him. He wasn’t sure what he was looking for and more just hoping to come across something that struck his fancy. His original plan had involved having a discussion with Immy which would guide the decision making process and ultimately they would choose something they could read simultaneously and discuss. Flights of fancy had all but sailed out the window. He strolled aimlessly down the first aisle not finding anything that called to him and turned to move up the second aisle when suddenly the hushed tones of the quiet library fell deathly silent. Soft footsteps, muffled whispering, and the gently flutter of pages being turned seemed to shut off instantly. Dorian reached for his wand in his inner coat pocket and drew it just as a voice sounded behind him. He turned on the spot, his wand drawn at the approaching individual. There was a moment of confusion before recognition set in as the older wizard remarked about the books Dorian had picked out for his niece. His wand lowered but his grip remained firm. “Mister Dumbledore. My apologies, I was not expecting…” His eyes flicked to the open spaces around them, confirming that there was still movement in the library yet no sound penetrated their immediate area. Dorian’s gaze fixed back on the wizard before him. “How may I be of service?”

“Julian?” That was an unexpected turn, but then it did make more sense than Dorcas – who had known Dorian for several years now in a personal capacity and many more in a professional one – throwing him a surprise party for his birthday. Though Dorian hadn’t thought the brothers were close enough for that sort of gesture yet. Things were much better between the pair now that Dorian no longer suspected that Jules was trying to wriggle his way into Ariel’s life only to abandon her as he had done their sister time and time again. They even got together for friendly chats without the children from time to time, though in truth Tristan’s and Ariel’s playdates made up a lot of their time spent together. Perhaps Julian was attempting to take their blossoming friendship to a more familial level which, if that were the case, meant that Dorian would need to step things up as well.
Dorcas left him for the adults part of the soiree as an excited Ariel ran up to him. “Dory-nan!” Dorian scooped up the little princess and gave her a snuggly greeting. He complimented her dress, at which point Aurora appeared and demanded remarks on her attire as well, and he played with them for a few minutes before Ariel became distracted by one of the tinier babies. He took this as his opportunity to return to the other room to properly greet his guests. And maybe have a glass of wine.
“I hear you were the mastermind behind this…event.” He sidled up next to Julian, waiting for a lull in the conversation to interject. “Thank you. You put far more effort into this than I am worth.”

Leo had mentioned the fairy book reading in Mystic Alley with a look of almost too much glee. Something was happening that apparently Dorian needed to witness, but not in an Auror capacity and the event was child friendly so Dorian had been encouraged to bring Ariel. Honestly, Dorian wasn’t sure what Leo had up his sleeves but he and Ariel loved reading and there was rarely a book event that Dorian turned down. And little Ariel would absolutely never turn down a chance to wear a tutu!
Ariel rested on Dorian’s hip as they entered the bookshop, but the instance she spied other little ones running around in back patio, she demanded to be put down. “Don’t run,” Dorian instructed fruitlessly as Ariel answered “no run!” while running full steam towards the other children. He would have liked to have given the bookshop a little once over, it was new and as such he needed to familiarize himself with every nook and cranny but not at the expense of watching Ariel. He followed along, his adult gait keeping up with the little blonde with ease. Ariel found the crayons but abandoned them almost immediately when she spotted a familiar witch. “Door-kiss!” Dorian, however, was too distracted by the sight of his brother cozying up to Paris – except it was actually Paris’ twin Vienna but Dorian’s brain thought Paris first. Dorian pursed his lips and clenched his jaw, forcing himself to look in another direction and spying Leo with his nephew Blaise and a younger witch. He would greet his friend later when Leo wasn’t busy, of course that allowed his eyes to wander back toward Julian and Paris’ look-a-like. His posture stiffened.

My promise to you always and forever
Ariel was spending the day with Emily and Andre so that Dorian could see Immy. She had had to miss his birthday party the week prior due to work, but Dorian wasn’t terribly bothered by her absence. It was not that he didn’t want to see her, or didn’t want her to meet his friends, it was just that Dorian was not a fan of parties in general and the excessive attention made him uncomfortable. He would have preferred more people to have been called away to work but alas the party had been quite large. And rather shocking all things considered. Dorian had managed to catch up with Immy a few days later but he didn’t want to discuss the news of what had been revealed at his party to her when they had such limited time together. They managed a short lunch before he was called away on an urgent work matter but planned to meet up today at the library for a proper date. A date which was doomed from the outset. Dorian had only been waiting a few moments before he got word that Immy was not coming. There had been some emergency at the hospital. He should have expected it by now. He couldn’t remember a single time that they’d actually made it to the end of the date in a traditional fashion but it was to be expected with their respective work. He had already made so many adjustments to his schedule for Ariel, there simply wasn’t enough wiggle room to also work around a girlfriend’s work schedule as well and if he were forced to choose Ariel would win out every time.
His plans for the day were dissolving, but as he was already at the library Dorian figured he might as well pick up a few new books for Ariel and him to read together, and maybe something just for himself. He wouldn’t require the Meadowes to sit Ariel all day, but she was already at their home and she had been so excited to see her grandad Andre and play in his garden. He would afford her a little more time with them before stealing her away. Dorian turned and headed into the library by himself, heading to the children’s section first and seeking out the aisle with the books Ariel most often preferred; the Prancing Pony series starred a miniature horse that wanted to be a ballerina and often got into mischief with her animal friends. Dorian grabbed a couple Prancing Pony books and also a Merle the Magical Muggle book, then headed for the Non-Fiction section to find something for himself.

The other kids? How sodding large was this party? Dorian felt his jaw clench even tighter – if that were possible, but he forced a smile and allowed Dorcas to lead him away from the party guests and move through her mansion toward wherever the children were playing. Dorcas provided a rundown of Ariel’s day; it sounded as though she had had a very fun time. The blonde little toddler always enjoyed playing with Dorcas and Aurora, though Dorian was a little concerned that Dorcas’ stepdaughter’s manners weren’t the most appropriate model for his niece, but then again neither were Dorcas’. “Thank you for taking her today. I am sure she had loads of fun.” He pushed himself a little more and added, “and thank you for the party.” He didn’t really mean it, and she knew that, but regardless of how he felt about the affair, she had clearly put in a lot of thought, time, and effort into the evening and it was for his benefit. He just thought she might have known him better than this by now.

Good, he thought. No one he needed to follow up with in the immediate future. He could get back to the real detective work and push off the unsettling feeling that Dorcas was more involved in the incident than she let on. He still needed to check out a few more leads on her alibi but thus far they were turning up in her favor and for a man who purposefully distanced himself from every sort of relationship due to his profession, he was glad that it seemed he would not be losing another friendship just yet. "Alright then, Miss LeBeau." He set his quill down and looked up at the woman. "I don't have any further questions at this time, but I may be in touch at some point in the future. Thank you for coming down." Dorian rose from his chair and extended his hand to her.

My promise to you always and forever
Dorian’s steps slowed and by the time the lights turned on and a large mass of people jumped out, shouting surprise in his direction, he was standing still. His jaw was set, feet planted firmly on the rug, he could have been mistaken for a statue. Several seconds passed as the party-goers began their revelry, their excitement not quite spreading to the birthday boy. Celebrating his birthday in March was still relatively new, his parents hadn’t learned his actual birthdate as he had arrived at the orphanage without any documentation. It wasn’t until he met River that he learned anything about his biological family or his true birth story. Even before then, Dorian didn’t like to make a big fuss over his birthday. His mum would always attempt a party but Dorian preferred to keep things quiet and small. Looking around Dorcas’ large living room there were far too many people for one social event for Dorian’s liking, even if he did consider each of them a friend. Well, most of them, there were a few faces dotted in the crowd that he wasn’t as familiar with, spouses of colleagues and such, but for the most part it was a gathering of basically everyone he had ever socialized with and it was overwhelming. Dorian cleared his throat and forced a smile which looked pained and unnatural. “I was not expecting this,” he admitted truthfully, “thank you.” Dorian stuffed his hands in his trouser pockets and inhaled through his nose. “Wow.” He wasn’t sure what else to say, or what he was expected to do now but he certainly didn’t want to be considered rude so he would play along for the duration of the party, and pray it wasn’t going to last all night. He stepped further into the room and approached Dorcas. “Where’s Ariel?” he asked quietly, smiling and looking at the other guests who were still shouting their congratulations at having been born decades earlier.

Dorian jotted down the details as they were provided to him. He focused on collecting the necessary information while attempting to not form an opinion on the matter just yet. He wanted to details and the clues to lead him to the answer, not the other way around. Forming an opinion early on in a case was a surefire way to end up ignoring key details that might otherwise indicate the narrative they were following was flawed. It was sloppy detective work and Dorian had learned long ago to avoid that sort of investigating procedure, which was why he was here taking down an alibi for his own friend. He could not afford to be blinded by personal connections. He would inquire internally as to if and when Dorcas’ message regarding the fire came into the Ministry.
They were nearly done, but he had just one more question for the woman. “And was there anyone else with you during or following your visit with Mrs Meadowes? Anyone you might have spoken to about the incident?” If there was, he would contact them next. If not, he would look into Dorcas’ message to the Ministry and then, hopefully, put this ordeal behind him and focus on finding the Death Eaters involved with this attack and determine exactly who had been hiding the muggleborn families in the first place. They were either in danger or perhaps had already met a similar fate, but if there was a chance they could beat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named to the punch, Dorian would try for it.

Satisfied that he wouldn’t be viewed as an inconvenience if he called on her again, Dorian smiled. Immy kissed his cheek and he gently squeezed her hand before the pair separated. He wished he could have walked her home but the message he had received from the Department was urgent and there simply wasn’t the time. He would make up for his rudeness and quick departure at another opportunity. Dorian said another farewell just as he turned on the spot and disappeared with a little pop.

My promise to you always and forever
He rang the doorbell, despite having been welcomed in the home numerous times. Some people might feel comfortable strutting into their friends’ home unannounced, though expected, but Dorian had already encountered the couple in flagrante delicto once before, several years ago, and he had no wishes to repeat the encounter. Not that he expected them to be doing that while Ariel and Aurora were having a playdate, but Dorian never quite fully trusted Dorcas’ judgement. Not when it came to personal matters, at least. She was an excellent Auror with only a small blip of concern on Dorian’s radar earlier in the year, something he was still working through, but her personal life seemed a bit of a mess. She had married a man she’d been seeing while he was still married and had a run-in with the wife that resulted in a death. She kept all manner of friends, some of whom Dorian did not fully approve of – Tersha Knight – and continuously flirted with Dorian despite now being a married witch and step-mother. It was shameful and yet Dorian had difficulties shaking her from his life. He blamed that bit on Andre and Emily, Dorcas’ parents. They were an amazing couple and something of grandparental figures to Dorian’s niece, Ariel. She would be devastated to not have Grammy Em and Grandad Andre in her life, as would Dorian. Andre wasn’t exactly like a father-figure to Dorian – he had a proper father growing up and all – but he couldn’t say that wasn’t truly the case. And Emily was such a lovely woman, she was definitely a sort of motherly friend. Dorian had a strange familial-type relationship with the Meadowes and so he would tolerate Dorcas’ shenanigans out of loyalty and, reluctantly, friendship.
The door opened and as expected Doria was greeted by one of the Lestrange house elves, Ader. The other elf would no doubt be helping mind the children somewhere off in this obnoxiously large manor so Dorian allowed the smaller elf to shuttle him into the lounge where he’d been informed Dorcas and the children were playing. He’d be glad to not have to interact with her husband during this short exchange. Dorian had a nice quiet evening planned for Ariel and himself at home, hoping she would crash early after having played with Aurora all day which would give him plenty of time to review his notes on a case he was working. And maybe read a book if he needed to clear his mind for a bit.
As the pair neared the lounge, Dorian’s brow furrowed. There was noise coming from another room further down the hallway that sounded like more than just two children, and there was a hum in the air that made his jaw set. He felt uneasy, as if walking into a crime scene that had not yet been cleared. Dorian stiffened as the door to the lounge opened and the lights flicked on. Had it not been only a few days after his birthday, he might have drawn his wand in preparation for the throngs of people who were about to jump out at him.

“And your visitor was Mrs Meadowes, is that correct?” The fact that the woman was not able to give a precise time when her visitor left was an important detail that Dorian picked up on straight away. It would have been suspicious, rehearsed, if she knew the exact time for a casual visit or in the midst of a emergency. Taking the time to look at a clock would have been strange in that moment. “How did you come to be aware of the incident earlier today?”

She was rejecting his offer to escort her home, but Dorian did not feel the least bit slighted. Immy was a healer, a profession of the utmost importance and one that he was certain would make requests of her similarly to how the Auror Department required him now. Some things were simply too urgent, too important, or too chaotic to be handled solely by those on shift. He had been called away from more important events than a date before, though it was precisely this reason why Dorian had stepped back in his duties when Ariel came into his life. There were only so many missed moment a man could afford in his niece’s/adopted daughter’s young life and honestly, if he had to choose between Ariel and Immy to leave in the lurch for his work, it wasn’t going to be Ariel. He smiled solemnly and nodded his head at her instance that she would make it home safely. There was not any looming threat on the short walk from the restaurant to her flat, well, nothing more tumultuous than what seemed to be their new normal under the threat of Death Eater attack. Dorian’s offer and show of concern was more out of chivalry than true worry for her safety. She would be fine, but he would check in on her later to confirm.
Immy stood from the table and Dorian took a single step backwards to afford her standing space. He smiled at her kind words. “As did I.” The pair began their walk toward the exit, the least he could do was escort her out of the building before disapparating. “Would it be alright with you if I rang you tomorrow?” He wasn’t foolish enough to ask for a second date at the same time that he was running out on their first, but he did hope to see her in this capacity again. She was intelligent and well-spoken, and it had taken ages for him to work up the nerve to request their relationship move from casual library partners to something more intimate. He had already taken the first step, there was no need to backtrack just yet.
