Neat script inked her name onto the parchment. Dorian looked up at her when she began to get impatient. “I am sure this won’t be too long, should you answer my questions promptly.” If her story was inconsistent then, of course, their conversation would be longer. “Let’s get right into it, then. Shall we? What were you doing today between noon and one pm?”

“I think I can look the other way on a little cheating, in that regard.” He chuckled lightly, already knowing the splendor that was Shangri-La’s dessert menu. Immy offered him a bite and leaned forward to reach for her spoon when a small paper owl appeared hovering between them, interjecting itself into their date. Dorian frowned and snatched the bird instead of the spoon, unfolding the message quickly though he already knew what to expect. It was from the Ministry and he was being called in to work. Dark eyes scanned the words, his jaw set in annoyance. “Immy, I am terribly sorry but there’s a matter that needs attending at work.” Their first date and already he was leaving her in the lurch. They’d only just broached the idea of a second date but he wasn’t foolish enough to ask for one now. Dorian pulled his coin purse from his inner breast pocket and placed enough to cover their bill and then some. He stood, tucking his money away, and then reached for her hand. “My apologies.” He kissed the back of her hand. “Let me escort you home.” He couldn’t just leave her, but he also didn’t have time for another city stroll.

A woman offering to cook for him was not something that Dorian was used to. He liked it. Cooking had not been in his last girlfriend’s wheelhouse, though Dorian always praised Paris’ efforts and never once complained when his kitchen was left destroyed or the food was burnt. Before that there was a long stretch of no one, and prior to that his girlfriends had all been relatively short-lived and too young and immature to understand the value of a good home cooked meal. Dorian enjoyed the idea of Immy cooking something delicious for him, but more so he was excited for the possibility of another date. “That would be nice.” Things were going well, thus far, and it bode well that she was thinking ahead already. Dorian himself didn’t like looking too far into the future, having had such horrendous luck in life that planning for anything beyond a few weeks seemed practically pointless (with the exception of already having Ariel’s Hogwarts experience mapped out right down to her time as Head Girl and straight O’s across all her lessons). He would be amiss if he wasn't completely on board with a second and possibly third date with the lovely woman across from him.

He dipped the tip of his quill into the black inkwell before drawing a long stroke on the paper that was the start of a cursive D. Dorian’s penmanship was impeccable, and on more than one occasion his printing had been mistaken for type. Her given name, though unusual, was easy enough to spell. How any graduate of Hogwarts failed to muster a teensy bit of Latin was beyond him, but certainly they all knew the words of the school’s crest? Her surname, however, posed more options. “LeBeau.” He looked up before writing her surname. “LaBeau or LeBeau?” Or perhaps he was off all together.

He had been to Eguisheim once while hunting down a Dark Witch, alongside Agent Moody, but hadn’t mentioned as much to his date. Eguisheim was a lovely little village and Dorian didn’t want her view of the place to be tainted by the knowledge that a murderous witch had taken up residence there some years back. It was perfectly safe otherwise, and Immy spoke of the village with such admiration, there was no reason to dampen the memories with ugliness. He posed thoughtful questions and listened with delight as she explained, sometimes deciding that neither of them knew and he made a mental note to look up the information the next time he was at a library so that they could continue their conversation because he was rather enjoying it.
She complimented the food though Dorian could hardly take credit for it. “I have always been something of a food lover,” he explained, setting his chopsticks on the edge of his plate and lifting his glass to clear his mouth before speaking further. “Though, I must admit, I am more accustomed to dining at home than going out. I cannot take credit for knowing about this place, one of my work colleagues turned me on to this place originally. She eats Chinese like it’s going out of fashion.” Although Dorcas’ food habits were not limited to Chinese take-away exclusively, she did seem to have an inordinate amount of take away boxes in the department refrigerator as if she sustained purely on leftover chow mein.

Dorian’s expression remained consistent despite his initial confusion. If she hadn’t witnessed the arson event, then what was she doing here? And how did she pertain to the investigation? Dorian listened patiently, his questions being answered as the woman explained herself. “I see,” he said softly, more annoyed with Dorcas than suspicious at this point. He had only needed her friend’s information on his desk, not her sodding friend. Not at the woman was on his desk, but he wouldn’t put it past Dorcas to suggest such a stunt as means of a laugh. He shuffled through the papers in his file, looking for a different one than the one he was expecting to complete. “May I have your name then?” he asked, having found the sheet of parchment with his notes about Dorcas and Alastor’s strange interaction earlier in the day.

Talking with Immy was easy. They had chatted on several occasions and got on well, so it seemed simple enough to fall into conversation with her now, though Dorian had to admit that he was not well versed in modern dating practices so his choice of topics might have fallen short of date-like without his knowing. The last date he had gone on was with his then-girlfriend Paris, and she had been dead now for two years. It had been pointed out even then that his approach to wooing a woman might have been a little outdated and certainly advancements had been made in the last couple of years that Dorian had been willfully ignorant to. Had he mucked up his first proper date with Imelda already he would never have known. “A time or two, yes. For work mostly.” Nearly all of his travels were for work, but he had, on occasion, taken an extra day to see the sights. He had walked the Great Wall and partook in a moment of silence in a Buddhist temple in Zhengzhou. He regaled Immy with a more sanitized version of the time he had chased a Dark Wizard to Guilin on a river cruise boat, describing in passionate detail the lovely surroundings he had found himself in despite the tediousness of the task at hand, pausing when the waiter came around to take their order. Perhaps this was boring. He’d been talking far too much and had not reciprocated the question back to her yet. He was being a blathering idiot and was happy for the excuse of a warm dumpling popped into his mouth to politely shut the hell up. He swallowed and cleared his mouth with a sip of tea. “I don’t suppose travelling for work truly counts as travelling. Not in the sense most people expect. I am sure you’ve had more leisurely opportunities abroad.” He knew she visited family in Spain, gathering that information early in their friendship, but between England and Spain at least there were a few touristy locations she might have ventured, if not further.

Dormiens was instructed to wait while the front desk man rang Dorian’s desk. The call went unanswered but Dormiens was assured he was in the office and to please wait. Another attempt was made and this time Dorian answered and soon enough he was walking briskly to reception. “Owl Creek?” he asked the dark haired woman, although there was no one else waiting that didn’t belong to the department, but he wanted to be sure before he started gathering information from the wrong person. “I’m Agent Humbert. If you would follow me, we can speak more privately.”
He led the woman to his desk and gestured to the stiff chair across from his own. His desk was perfectly organized; files stacked in a thin, straight pile on the right and a container of quills all matching in color and length on the other side. A wood placard read “Agent D. Humbert” in gold lettering. There was a single black picture frame with an image of a blonde toddler laughing as a white and chocolate springer spaniel licks her face. Geralina had given Dorian the picture; Ariel with her parents’ dog. It was a daily reminder of why Dorian worked as hard as he did to keep the dark wizards at bay best he could, and the only thing sentimental on the Aurora’s otherwise pristine desk. “So,” he started, taking a seat behind his desk and pulling one of the quills from the jar and opening the top file in his stack. “You witnessed the arson event at Owl Creek?”

They didn’t stay but a moment inside her flat, not that Dorian was expecting her to entertain them in her home on their first real date, but he noted that she was cautious in closing the door behind him for the short duration of time it took her to fetch and don her cloak. He did the same out of habitual over caution and he supposed, given their country’s current state of affairs, she had a similar reason for her actions. For a moment he felt guilty that he was taking time formerly spent working to solve cases and bring a small sense of order to the chaos that was the wizarding world, and instead he was selfishly indulging himself in pleasant company with potential for…more. The sight of Immy turning as she flung her cloak around her shoulders, long legs exposed and dark hair cascading down her back, distracted Dorian from his moment of doubt and he smiled. “No hiking. Not in those shoes, at least. You look gorgeous, by the way,” he remarked earnestly as they stepped out of her apartment and she shut the door behind them. He hesitated a moment until he heard the locks click into place. “I like your…” he gestured to her broach as they stepped out into the fresh winter air. He couldn’t think of the word. He found he couldn’t think of a great deal of things when he spoke to Immy, and rarely before had he found himself tongue-tied.
They passed by the snowman Dorian had constructed on the pavement and he led Immy down the street toward Whimsic Alley in search of the best Chinese food this side of the Black Sea. He managed small talk on the way, mostly talking about Ariel and their most recent trips to the library – a safe topic given the couple’s previous meeting arrangements. When they arrived at Shangri-La, Dorian held the door for Immy and followed her inside, away from the cold. He’d made a reservation but they still had to wait a few minutes as the staff bused the table and brought fresh utensils. “If you can’t make it to China for supper, this is the next best place to go,” he said with a slight smile as he held her chair for her.

My promise to you always and forever
Visiting a friend… That was either a fortunate happenstance or Dorcas was hiding something. Dorian really didn’t want it to be the latter, he trusted Dorcas as much as anyone he had ever worked with. She was a friend, practically family, but it was simply too convenient that she just happened to be in Owl Creek, near enough that she saw the flames before the authorities were called in. He wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t look into every lead, he just didn’t want Dorcas to be one of them.
His eyes narrowed slightly, his jaw tensing as he was known to do when irritated or in deep thought – it was remarkable how similar those expressions were, and utterly annoying when it occurred in front of Dorcas who used the opportunity to attempt to make him uncomfortable by pretending to be attracted to him. Well, succeeding in making him uncomfortable most of the time, anyway. Alastor called his name and Dorian turned. The larger wizard was now moving toward the medics where the young boy, the apparent sole survivor was sitting, wrapped in a blanket. Dorian turned back to Dorcas. “I’ll need the name and address of your friend on my desk by the end of the day.” He paused, a strange feeling of unease in his stomach. “I’m glad you weren’t hurt.” He turned and headed toward Alastor and the boy, watching Dorcas from the corner of his eye as he bent near the ground and met the child at his eye level, attempting to provide a bit of comfort before gently probing.
The kid seemed to take a shine more to Alastor than Dorian, but Dorian wasn’t offended or concerned. In the end, he agreed that Alastor would be best as the lead detective on the case; he had a rapport with the only witness they had (minus Dorcas), and Dorian had to agree that the Training Academy took up too much of his time to give such a large investigation the proper attention. He was still working the case, however, and he was going to look into Dorcas’ alibi himself if for no other reason than to unknot the awful feeling in his stomach.

Right place at the right time, what a bunch of dragon dung. Dorian opened his mouth to reply, though admittedly more tactfully than how he might have imagined, when Alastor interjected. The taller man attempted to guide Dorian away from Dorcas as he spoke about finding the right lead for the case, but Dorian stood his ground, his eyes evaluating Dorcas as his jaw clenched. He didn’t want to believe that there might be something more nefarious than a Death Eater attack at play here. “What were you doing Owl Creek?” he questioned. Judging by her attire, she wasn’t out for a stroll in the middle of such a cold winter’s night. She would have frozen to death, unless she’d been planning to roam around a burning building for warmth.

My promise to you always and forever
Dorian had enjoyed his friendly trip with Immy to the library previously, although Ariel had been a good buffer for the socially apprehensive Auror. In casual conversation Immy had brought up Tenebrus Halls library which Dorian had been wanting to take Ariel to, and he mentioned as much. The library was on Dorian’s top 10 list of his favorite libraries in the UK and Ireland, but he’d not explored the children’s section of the library before. Typically he took Ariel to the library closest to their home, or nearest the Meadowes’ simply for the ease of it all, but he had heard the Tenebrus Halls library had a phenomenal children’s section and he’d been looking for an opportunity to take Ariel there. Immy suggested they meet up there with Ariel and Dorian liked the idea for multiple reasons. The trip had gone well. Ariel managed to make her Daddy Dor proud with how many books she wanted to take home – nearly all about dancing unicorns and dragons, and Dorian and Immy had the opportunity to get to talk a bit more than they had at Leo’s barbecue. A few additional library outings gave Dorian the courage to muster up a real date proposal and the time had finally come. He waited anxiously at her front door, purposefully schooling his features to hide the broad smile that wanted to burst forth from his face.
The door opened and Immy appeared. She looked stunning, of course, but the first thing Dorian noticed was how the lights caught her eyes. “Hello.” She invited him inside and Dorian nodded, stepping over the threshold. “I hope you don’t mind a little stroll. It’s a bit chilly outside but it’s also quite lovely.” He had hopes of taking her to Shangri-La which was in walking distance, and although she’d not voiced a concern with walking in the winter wonderland outside, he hoped she would be comfortable.

He was a little early, having left the Meadowes' quicker than originally planned thanks to a little push from an overly presumptuous Dorcas. Dorian took his time as he strolled leisurely up the street toward Immy's flat. She lived in a muggle-occupied area but it was walking distance to Whimsic Alley and Dorian thought it might be nice for them to walk to the restaurant since it wasn't really snowing very much. There had been a small dusting of snow earlier in the day, covering the pavement and little grassy bits dotted here and there with a white powder that was almost magical in its own right. Dorian checked his watch. He was still a few minutes early but only a few - he debated whether to knock on her door now or wait. So long as he wasn't late, he didn't see much harm in arriving only a couple of minutes before their agreed upon time. Unless she was the sort that ran late and was still dressing. Perhaps he would wait just a few more minutes outside of the apartment building before heading inside and finding her flat.
The street had a calm silence to it, or as quiet as one could expect even on the outskirts of London. Dorian paced slowly in front of the apartment building, smiling at a woman and her son who had come out of the apartment. They were bundled up tight, and the mum seemed eager to get out of the chilly weather as she walked hurriedly, but the boy dawdled, kicking at the snow. "But we need a snowman!" the boy whined after his mum had called him by his full name and insisted he hurry alongside her. Dorian checked his watch; just a little bit longer. The family out of sight, Dorian looked around to make sure he was alone before discretely drawing his wand and giving it a teensy flourish. A wind picked up and seemed to blow the snow into three stacked balls. Dorian stuffed his wand back in his pocket, bent to the ground and managed to scrounge up a few rocks and sticks from around the little tree nearby to complete the look. He checked his watch again, smiled, then turned and headed into the apartment building.
He felt a small flurry of excitement as he knocked on the door, and waited patiently, hoping she wasn't the sort to be running late on the first date.

Dorian did not like to drop off and leave Ariel too quickly, but there had been occasions when it had been necessary. That was the life on an Auror and it was the reason he had been so reluctant to allow anyone else into his life. Emergencies were all around, and even if he wasn't on shift, there was always the possibility he would be needed urgently and without notice. Andre and Emily were always good about helping out. There really was no way Dorian could ever repay them - and he had tried, but the couple simply didn't view it as an imposition. The perfect grandparents, even if there was no relation at all. He could swing in, toss Ariel and a nappy bag at them, and dash off without much warning at all, but he'd not been planning to do that today. Dorian had purposely arrived early with the intent to hang around a bit. Well, he hadn't factored Dorcas into his plans. "Goodbye, Dorcas," he said pleasantly, if not a little clipped, purposely ignoring her final remarks. He then exited out the front door, turning on his heel and disappearing from sight.

My promise to you always and forever
Upon exiting the smoldering building, the Healers waved he and Dorcas over. Dorian glanced around at the scene outside as he moved toward the makeshift triage center. Only a few small flames were still visible, and the rest was mostly smoke and ash. The house was still standing, and the Healer inspected him Dorian thought he and Dorcas had actually done a fairly decent job securing the interior. It had gone surprisingly quick. She’d even managed to save a kid, albeit that was before Dorian had arrived. Strange, because he’d left as soon as the alarm had been sounded. He wasn’t known for dilly-dallying. The Healer asked him to turn around, and Dorian complied. Now he was faced with a more perplexing view of the crime scene. Alastor and Dorcas whispering excitedly. That wouldn’t have been all too concerning had he not thought he’d heard his name between the two of them. Add to that Dorcas’ early arrival and, now that he was not rushing into a burning building he had time to take her in, her unconventional work-wear. Dorian was growing suspicious.
He was released by the Healer with a bill of good health and immediately approached the whispering pair. “You saved that boy. Nice work,” he commented in Dorcas’ direction, though his eyes flitted between them both. “Fast work. I’d say you earned Lead on this case, Agent Meadowes but then, I don’t remember you being on shift.” He wanted to be wrong, prayed he was wrong, but his instincts were telling him that Dorcas was up to something. Possibly Alastor, too. He knew there was corruption within the Ministry but he hadn’t dreamed…
