My promise to you always and forever
Ariel was spending the day with Emily and Andre so that Dorian could see Immy. She had had to miss his birthday party the week prior due to work, but Dorian wasn’t terribly bothered by her absence. It was not that he didn’t want to see her, or didn’t want her to meet his friends, it was just that Dorian was not a fan of parties in general and the excessive attention made him uncomfortable. He would have preferred more people to have been called away to work but alas the party had been quite large. And rather shocking all things considered. Dorian had managed to catch up with Immy a few days later but he didn’t want to discuss the news of what had been revealed at his party to her when they had such limited time together. They managed a short lunch before he was called away on an urgent work matter but planned to meet up today at the library for a proper date. A date which was doomed from the outset. Dorian had only been waiting a few moments before he got word that Immy was not coming. There had been some emergency at the hospital. He should have expected it by now. He couldn’t remember a single time that they’d actually made it to the end of the date in a traditional fashion but it was to be expected with their respective work. He had already made so many adjustments to his schedule for Ariel, there simply wasn’t enough wiggle room to also work around a girlfriend’s work schedule as well and if he were forced to choose Ariel would win out every time.
His plans for the day were dissolving, but as he was already at the library Dorian figured he might as well pick up a few new books for Ariel and him to read together, and maybe something just for himself. He wouldn’t require the Meadowes to sit Ariel all day, but she was already at their home and she had been so excited to see her grandad Andre and play in his garden. He would afford her a little more time with them before stealing her away. Dorian turned and headed into the library by himself, heading to the children’s section first and seeking out the aisle with the books Ariel most often preferred; the Prancing Pony series starred a miniature horse that wanted to be a ballerina and often got into mischief with her animal friends. Dorian grabbed a couple Prancing Pony books and also a Merle the Magical Muggle book, then headed for the Non-Fiction section to find something for himself.

Albus' emerald robes swirled around him as he turned down the next aisle in the library. Non-fiction. Of course that was what Mr. Humbert preferred to read. The man had his feet planted firmly on the ground, all flights of fancy disregarded and paid no mind. Despite his lack of whimsy, Humbert was a brilliant man. Albus remembered him fondly from his school days. A Ravenclaw, hard working, well respected, never any trouble at all. And now he was one of the best Aurors the Ministry had, taking those qualities and adding a fierce determination to them that made him formidable. The man's stubbornness had proven quite annoying for Albus in recent times. Humbert was surrounded by members of the Order in his every day life, and yet his determination to keep out of the war kept him oblivious. It had taken a long time for Albus to even consider that he might be ready, but now... Now there may just be a window that Albus could take advantage of. He would have Humbert in the Order, whether now or further down the line, but it would be a delicate operation.
A swish of his wand in a circle over his head created a magical barrier around himself and the Auror. Anybody walking by would neither see nor hear them, and it was imperative that they were not discovered having this conversation. The library, already hushed, became deathly silent, not even the flip of a page could be heard, nor the breath of the librarian in the next aisle. He peered through half moon spectacles at the books in Humbert's hands. "Ah, the Prancing Pony," said Albus, delighted to see that there were still fans of the books in the world. "I happen to enjoy those books, myself. I have the full collection in my office." He smiled warmly at Humbert. "Hello, Dorian."

My promise to you always and forever
Chocolate eyes scanned the spines stacked neatly on the shelf before him. He wasn’t sure what he was looking for and more just hoping to come across something that struck his fancy. His original plan had involved having a discussion with Immy which would guide the decision making process and ultimately they would choose something they could read simultaneously and discuss. Flights of fancy had all but sailed out the window. He strolled aimlessly down the first aisle not finding anything that called to him and turned to move up the second aisle when suddenly the hushed tones of the quiet library fell deathly silent. Soft footsteps, muffled whispering, and the gently flutter of pages being turned seemed to shut off instantly. Dorian reached for his wand in his inner coat pocket and drew it just as a voice sounded behind him. He turned on the spot, his wand drawn at the approaching individual. There was a moment of confusion before recognition set in as the older wizard remarked about the books Dorian had picked out for his niece. His wand lowered but his grip remained firm. “Mister Dumbledore. My apologies, I was not expecting…” His eyes flicked to the open spaces around them, confirming that there was still movement in the library yet no sound penetrated their immediate area. Dorian’s gaze fixed back on the wizard before him. “How may I be of service?”

Paying no mind to the wand in Humbert's hand, Albus folded his own hands in front of him, fingers laced, a relaxed smile on his weathered face. "It is me that should apologize, I didn't mean to startle you." It was nice to see that the Auror had sharp reflexes even in his free time. That instinct would come in handy on missions for the Order, when most of his members had to master the art of being undercover. Of course, that wouldn't be an issue for Humbert. Much like young Christopher Devereaux, it was part of his day job. Albus wondered if perhaps Humbert's skill level might match that of Dorcas Meadowes, though he got the distinct feeling that roleplay was something Dorcas did for fun, and she was far more talented at it than anyone else in the Order. Humbert had a different set of skills that was just as coveted by the old wizard as he cleared his throat, wondering how best to broach the subject. "I was hoping that we could have a little chat," Albus said, nodding to the small table and chairs set up at the end of the aisle they stood in. "Shall we?"

This was highly irregular on several levels, and Dorian's defenses remained raised as the older wizard offered a chat. What could an Order of Merlin, First Class recipient want with himself? Surely if this were Ministry business, there would be more formal approaches the Hogwarts Headmaster could take to contact him, though Albus Dumbledore was spoken less fondly of in the Ministry these days than even just a year ago. He couldn't think of any sort of social reason the man might have sought him out, and certainly nothing upstanding would require a silencing enchantment. "Of course," he answered politely. Dorian nodded at the invitation to sit, keeping his wand out as he pulled out a chair from the small table and set the books he had collected onto the table between them. Resting his wand hand on his lap, his wand naturally facing the bearded wizard though not properly aimed at him by any means, Dorian waited silently for some indication of what this apparent meeting would entail.

Humbert appeared to be in an agreeable mood, and the two men descended upon the small table together. Dorian took a seat, his wand still noticeably in his hand. Albus smiled to himself and spun his chair around, sitting on it backwards, his long legs stretched out either side. He would sit like that a lot in his younger years, in a suit much like Humbert was fond of, looking dapper and casual as he rested his arms on the chair back in front of him. Now he could feel something twinging in the bottom of his back, and his robes pulled tightly across his legs, making him look awkward and lumpy, but he stuck it out. "Mr Humbert. May I call you Dorian? I remember you as a bright boy at Hogwarts, and now you're one of our finest Aurors. I must say I feel quite a bit of pride." Pushing his spectacles higher up the bridge of his nose, Albus glanced at the pile of books that sat on the table between them. "It must be hard for you, trying to uphold those fine standards when the Ministry is turning to mud around you." It would be impossible for Dorian to ignore the corruption going on right under his nose, but would he be willing to admit that it was there? Would he be willing to admit that he couldn't do his job in quite the same fashion he had done it only a year ago? Albus watched him with careful eyes.

Chocolate eyes monitored the older man as he spun a chair around and sat backwards on it like a teenager might. It was most unprofessional but then again from what Dorian knew of Albus Dumbledore as an adult, and from what he remembered as a child, this action seemed perfectly aligned with the man’s personality. It was much too casual for Dorian’s liking, however, and he kept his face relaxed but attentive as he waited for the man to explain himself and the purpose of this meeting. An explanation came as he would have expected from Dumbledore, had he had a moment of preparation to expect it; cryptically. Dorian was nearing his mid-thirties. He’d been out of school almost as long as he’d been in it, and yet Mr Dumbledore seemed to remember him from his younger days, and apparently his adherence to the rule of law was of interest to the Headmaster now. But why?
Dorian had long ago admitted to himself that the leadership within the Ministry had in fact, turned to mud as Dumbledore so eloquently stated. His job had always been difficult but the clear corruption in the government was making it nearly impossible to do his job and he had, on occasion, considered other lines of work but his heart was with law enforcement and he knew he could make a bigger impact from the inside than the outside. Sadly, it seemed he was not the only one who believed that tactic to be the best option. Other than a tensing jaw, Dorian gave no indication one way or the other about Mr Dumbleore’s astute observation. He simply sat silently, waiting for the man to further explain himself.

Dorian clenched his jaw and said nothing. Albus' fears that the man wasn't ready yet stirred in his gut, but he dismissed them. He had waited long enough. If Humbert wasn't ready now, he never would be. The Ministry was crumbling from within, the muggle and magical communities were being plunged into chaos, and Albus would stop it, with or without the man sitting opposite him. "What if I told you that there was a way to fight back?" he asked. "You want to protect people, that is your job, Dorian, and yet the people you work for are causing more hurt than even you realise. Right now, there are innocent people hurting, dying. If there was a way, would you help them?" Albus wasn't sure how else to put it. If being blunt didn't work then he was out of ideas.

None of this was news to Dorian. Albus Dumbledore was opening no eyes in this conversation, and Dorian was already working from within in an attempt to correct the injustices that were happening under his feet but thus far he’d made very little impact. The reach of You-Know-Who’s grasp was extending further and further by the day and Dorian was practically working himself to death trying just to keep the peace. This war was the literal reason he and Immy had not had a single date that they’d seen to the end; he was pulled away to investigate series after series of gruesome murders and kidnappings, while Immy was called in to tend for the lucky few who survived. Nothing either of them did was slowing the chaos any. If Dumbledore knew of a way to help, actually succeed in helping, it was worth listening to, but Dorian wrestled with the thought. “Of course.” But what exactly was the man proposing? Clearly whatever Mr Dumbledore was thinking of doing, or already doing, would not be condoned by the Ministry of Magic and therefore was potentially illegal. Dorian couldn’t be caught up with anything like that, but the vagueness of Dumbledore’s words leaned heavily in that direction.

Dorian gave nothing away, which was irksome. Albus might have liked a tad more enthusiasm, for the man to engage him just a little bit. Alas, the task of drawing blood from a stone fell in Albus' lap - something he had actually done once before in the past. Quite a tricky spell, but not entirely impossible. If only there were a spell to make this interaction easier, or less one sided. It wasn't the most ethical approach, he had to admit, and honestly, Albus had once had an hour long conversation with a teapot that went splendidly, as far as he could recall. Recruiting Humbert was child's play, all things considered. He cleared his throat. "I would not ask anything of you if these were not dire circumstances, Dorian," he said softly. "There are a group of people, very talented, very brave people who also wish to do the right thing. As we speak they are fighting back against the growing darkness, and I would very much like you to join them. To join us."

My promise to you always and forever
Dorian listened to his former Headmaster’s carefully calculated plea for his support. He couldn’t help but question why, of all people, Dumbledore would come to him to join his vigilante group. Dorian was well known as a rule follower, and vigilante seemed the exact right word to describe what Albus was offering. Who but a mad man would think Dorian Humbert would break the law? Under peer pressure no less. Dorian shifted slightly in his seat, the wand on his lap still casually pointed in the direction of his conversation partner, though his grip was relaxed.
However, the older wizard had made some fine points, points which Dorian himself had come to realize a while ago. The Ministry of Magic was no longer ran by those with all magical persons’ interests at heart, but only with a select few. The blood supremacists were no longer merely planning a takeover, it had happened. Dorian had allowed it to happen, if only by following the rule of law instead of his moral convictions. Of course, Albus Dumbledore had a reputation around the Ministry these days, and while it was becoming more and more difficult to discern what was truth and what was fiction, he could not discount the possibility that Dumbledore was attempting to lure him into something untoward. He needed to proper evaluate the situation, which could not be done under a silencing spell in the middle of a public library. “This was an enlightening conversation, Mr Dumbledore. I hope you understand my need to ruminate on what you have presented here.” Dorian rose from his seat, delicately pocketing his wand and picking up the books from the table that he had collected for Ariel.
With a polite salutation, Dorian departed from the silencing spell’s boundaries, checked his niece’s books out with the librarian, and headed home to think on what had occurred. Much later that evening, after Ariel had long fallen asleep, still wearing her purple tutu and clutching her stuffed Prancing Pony, Dorian sat in the lounge with a single scrap of parchment on the glass table in front of him. In his tidy scrawl, the word “yes” was written in black ink. He stared at the message, wondering whether he had lost his mind in deciding to join a vigilante organization in the midst of a civil war but the answer was all too clear to him. Ariel had lost her mother and father because of the war, because of the people who were now seated in positions of power and creating laws that were purposefully designed to hurt people. Without resistance, thousands of magical and muggle people alike would be at risk. He weighed the risks against the benefits, and as Ariel slumbered peacefully upstairs, Dorian sent his message to the Hogwarts Headmaster. He was in.
