My promise to you always and forever
Perhaps he was slowing down now that his mid-thirties was approaching, or maybe it was simply the stress of raising a now one-year-old, but Dorian had put off this errand for nearly a month now, which was highly unlike him. In fairness, Dorian’s plate was rather full. Between work, Ariel, and searching for a proper home for the little family, there was not much free time left for tasks that weren’t time sensitive. His niece, Ariel, turned one the month previous and they’d had a little party for her at Dorian’s flat. Julian, Dorcas, Emily, Andre, Geralina, and a few of River’s old mates who had kept in touch with Dorian for Ariel’s sake had all managed to pile into Dorian’s one room apartment. The rooftop garden was open for their use during the party and it made for a nice escape when one needed a little elbow room, but when it came time for Ariel to try her first piece of birthday cake or to tear at the paper wrapped around her presents, everyone crammed inside uncomfortably and watched Ariel light up with glee as shoved a fistful of shiny paper into her mouth and poked at the frosting of the cake she didn’t seem too sure about. The presents were all thoughtful and much appreciated, including the two copies of the same child’s picture book with pictures of animals whose names corresponded with each letter of the alphabet. He had meant to exchange the second copy (discretely, of course) for another book that Ariel might fancy but the party had brought into clear view that his home for the last several years was far too small to raise a child in. He already knew that, of course, but since Julian’s arrival almost a year ago there had been an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach that told Dorian he wouldn’t have custody of his niece/adopted daughter for long. Thankfully he was wrong and now house hunting had taken up the spare time Dorian would have used to get Ariel another book.
Pulling her pram into the store as Dorian entered backwards, holding the door to the shop open as he spun Ariel around, Dorian allowed a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dimmer light of Flourish and Blotts. Ariel reached out for a feather that was sticking out of a book titled “Feathers and Fur: Friendly Creatures for Senior Wizards” by New Scamander. “Hands to yourself, little miss,” he said happily, helping Ariel’s fingers release the decorative feather as the book squawked at them. “Let’s have a look in the children’s section, shall we?” A young boy, no more than four judging by his size, ran passed Dorian and Ariel, laughing as a store clerk came zipping behind him. The sight only reinforced Dorian’s prediction that Ariel would be a well-behaved young lady, even if Dorcas did try to corrupt her from time to time.

His crying niece was not the way Julian should have been greeted. Not today. Dorian couldn’t begin to imagine the pain the man must have been feeling and he wasn’t daft enough to try. There was no possible way he would ever understand the anguish Julian would feel in having lost River for they were true siblings. They had grown up together, faced challenges and trials together. Dorian was related to them by blood, but Julian and River were an actual family with shared memories, heartaches, and laughter. Dorian had lost that relationship for them when he failed to keep River and Bert alive and now, on what should have been River’s birthday, Dorian was presenting Julian with a crying infant.
A yellow balloon stalled the tears on the chubby cheeked blonde and Dorian gave a solemn smile as he watched his niece momentarily made overjoyed with such a simple gift. Her blue eyes sparkled with left over tears as she bashed the balloon back and forth. Julian seemed almost surprised by Dorian’s presence in the field outside of Godric’s Hollow today, despite knowing very well that he had plans to join him. “Of course,” he replied, neither in an offended tone nor a taunting one. He was sincerely pained at the loss they shared between the three of them and he wouldn’t have missed this for all the gold in Gringotts. Ariel, oblivious to the sorrow surrounding her, shook her balloon with delight, dropping the teddy that had been clutched in her arms. Dorian reacted quickly, catching the bear before it reached the filthy ground and having to shift Ariel’s weight in his arms to manage her, the teddy bear, and the bouquet of roses. “She has a new tooth coming in today, so watch your fingers. She’s already gotten me a few times this morning.” Dorian held Ariel up, offering her to her uncle Julian in the hopes that a good cuddle would help to ease the pain of the day.

Normally a drink request such as Tersha’s would have elicited a strong look of disapproval smothered by a more convincing look of emotionlessness. Tonight, however, it seemed like a smart move and he would have applauded her demands were he the sort to put on such dramatics. “Sitting between the pair of you tonight, I am confident in stating that were there to be any secrets, you or Dorcas would have discovered them and spilled them at some point in the evening.” The witches honestly had gossiped far too much this evening, and how they knew half of what they shared with one another over Dorian’s lap was beyond him. Half the time he considered that they truly didn’t know anything at all and were simply making up details of other peoples’ lives in order to have something juicy to giggle about. Of course, Tersha, being a journalist, had too much of a reputation on the line to deal with known falsehoods.
The waiter returned shortly with a single glass of bourbon for Dorian and a bottle of high-end vodka and an empty glass for Tersha. Dorian thanked the man and said “cheers” to Tersha with a clink of his glass against hers, then proceeded to down the drink in an impressively short amount of time. Several drinks later and Dorian was much more talkative without feeling any relief as he continued to glance down the table at the woman wearing his dead love’s face.

The usually spotless flat was cleaned from top to bottom, with all of Ariel’s toys being washed despite already having been sanitized. Dorian kept a tidy home even before Ariel came into his life, but he felt even more responsible for keeping Ariel’s things in perfect condition because her mum wasn’t here to fuss over her as she should have been. It was not a rare occasion when Dorian looked at little Ariel playing on a plush blanket on the floor and thoughts of River would spring to mind. Was this how she would have wanted her daughter raised? Were the clothes she was wearing to River’s liking? Did he go overboard with the fruits and vegetables? Would River have snuck her daughter a lolly from time to time or would she have been outraged that Dorian would even have considered that Ariel’s age? He hadn’t known his sister long enough to truly know what she would have wanted for her daughter, and it was this knowledge that kept him fretting about how long Ariel and Dorcas had been gone. He managed to shower and put on proper clothes, fix himself something to eat, and review a few documents from a case he’d been working on, but his focus was never fully captured. When he finally heard the latch on the door begin to turn Dorian felt an immense sense of relief rush over him.
His desk faced the wall opposite to the front door. It wasn’t a position the Auror would generally be found in, back to the entrance, but his home was warded with an almost insane number of security charms and was the one place he felt he could be a little more lax. Dorcas called out for him as she and Ariel strolled into the room. Dorian turned in his chair, looking to the child who looked exhausted and content. Closing the file marked with the Ministry of Magic’s seal on the front cover and disturbing crime scene photographs and various other documents within, Dorian left his workspace and crossed the small space to reach his niece. Plucking her from the pram, he brought her to his chest and stroked her hair. “Did you have fun with Auntie Dorcas?” he asked, knowing the girl couldn’t answer him. He turned his attention to Dorcas. “Was she any trouble?” He could very well have asked Ariel the exact same question.

My promise to you always and forever
The conversation between the brothers had indeed been stale, and Dorian was grateful for the distraction Dorcas’ presence created, even if she was being a bit of a… well, rather Dorcas-like. Dorian knew to expect such things from her, but he had hoped she’d rein it in a bit since it was Christmas and Julian was a guest. Dorian still considered himself a guest in the Meadowes’ home but he was well aware that Andre, Emily, and Dorcas viewed him less as a guest and more as some strange sort of family. He liked the idea, but it unnerved him all the same. Family was a dangerous commodity for an Auror and the house was quickly filling with more collateral. Emily’s voice sounded from the other room, using a nickname he’d seen Dorcas make a face at many times before. The younger witch liked to tease him about the face he pulled whenever she got too annoying with him, but she had her own face and Dorian was no stranger to witnessing it in this delightful cottage. He very much doubted that Dorcas was even aware of the expression she made when “Cassie” was used so lovingly. Passing Julian, Dorcas held Ariel out for Dorian and he gladly accepted her. Turning her around to sit on his knee, her back in the crook of his arm creating a little chair for her. He kissed the top of her head and then tilted his head to look at her face. She was gazing in Julian’s direction while shoving her entire first into her mouth like a slobbery dummy. Julian hadn’t asked to hold his niece yet, which Dorian found odd, so he kept the sweet angel on his lap and made cooing sounds back at her, jiggling his leg so that she bounced and giggled with delight. Spending time with Ariel was much preferred to forcing conversation with his half-brother but he couldn’t bring himself to ignore the man altogether. That would have been rude and no way to mend this strange family they were a part of. The doorbell rang just as Dorian looked to Julian, about to speak, when Geralina appeared practically out of thin air and began cooing over Ariel who responded in kind with big blue eyes that lapped up the attention and tiny, saliva coated hands that reached for Geralina’s dark curls. The witch scooped up the infant and Dorian was once again relieved of baby duty whether he appreciated it or not.
“Happy Christmas, Geri,” Dorian said with a smile, as the woman sat in a chair between the two men. Dorian watched as Ariel responded to the melodic voice of the witch holding her. “Hopefully Santa did not go too wild,” he said knowingly. Geralina positively adored little Ariel and Dorian had a feeling that her copious amounts of affection did not end with cuddles and baby-talk. "We're already a very spoiled little miss, aren't we?"

Her words elicited a tense jaw and Dorian closed his eyes as he attempted to block out her sexual remark meant purely to displease him. Dorian longed for children one day, ones that, unlike Ariel, would call him daddy. He did not appreciate Dorcas using the nickname in such a provocative manner, even if he knew there was no chance of him having his own little family beyond loving and raising his niece. “That won’t be necessary,” he said shortly, running his tongue over his top teeth and looking away from the feisty brunette. Passing the babe over to the child-like adult, Dorian inhaled, his brow furrowing slightly. “Ring me straight away if you have any troubles,” he told her as he nervously watched Ariel in her pram heading toward the door. “Don’t be too long, she’ll need a nap in a few hours.” He wanted to shout a whole list of items at her but that would neither help the slight panic he felt in his stomach at having his niece leave him without the nurturing eyes of Emily or Andre to replace his own, nor would Dorcas bother to remember any of what he said. He let them go without much more fuss.
Dorian busied himself around the flat, checking the clock periodically and then methodically letting his eyes dash over to the front door in the hopes that it would open, and Dorcas and Ariel would return safe and sound. He knew Dorcas would never allow any harm to come to Ariel, but his nerves got the better of him and allowed him to think of every possible, horrible event that could overcome the pair while they were away from the watchful eyes of Ariel’s primary caregivers. If Dorian was this stressed over a bit of shopping, there was no telling what sort of a wreck he would be come time for Ariel to begin attending nursery school.

My promise to you always and forever
Overall the night was going as well as to be expected, given the surprising turn of events. Julian, and his date for the evening, Lunete were a shock to see together and despite the convincing display the pair put on for the evening, Dorian had a heavy feeling that Julian’s intentions with the young Auror were not completely on the up and up. A more egotistical man would think Julian’s interest in Miss Dearborn were only a targeted ploy to gain access to another aspect of half-brother’s life, but Dorian didn’t know Lunete well enough for that to be any solid connection for Julian to sniff out. The more troubling question then became what Lunete saw in the wizard sitting next to her, and if she had any inkling of the layabout werewolf she was apparently dating. If not, she was in for a nasty shock when she discovered the real Julian, and if she did know that he was the sort to disappear and leave his family when times became difficult, then what sort of character could she possibly have?
Ignoring the deeper look into the couple’s relationship was made easier, though no less frustrating, by being sat smack between the two best friends, Tersha and Dorcas. Dorcas would whisper insights into Julian’s life for Tersha to hear and Tersha would respond in kind with her own witty remarks. It might have been fine dinner chatter between friends except for the fact that Dorian was seating in between them with little room to escape to gossip. Still, Dorian thought the night could have been worse and he was rather pleased with the evening as a whole thus far.
His jaw tightened as Dorcas’ hand ran up his thigh. She made a joke to entertain herself and Dorian replied “right,” in a more casual manner than he felt. There was no use asking her to stop – that tended to make matters worse and playing into it was simply out of the question. Redirection, he had decided, was an appropriate route. As Dorcas left the table, Dorian turned to speak to the person sat on her other side, but the view he was granted with in Dorcas’ absence was a most unsettling one.
Chocolate eyes stared at her, for longer than was appropriate but it took several moments for his thoughts to finally catch up with his suddenly racing heart. He blinked a few times, cleared his throat as he turned back to his meal, and then looked back in her direction.
Paris.
Of course, he knew it wasn’t her. She was gone, and it had been nearly a year since he’d last seen her, but there she was, sitting a far length down the banquet table from him, smiling as she spoke. It was the smile that really gave it away. Paris’ smile had a different quality than Vienna’s, it was more honest, more attractive. The resemblance, however, was unmistakable and it took Dorian’s breath away to see the woman he loved back from the grave, embodied in her twin sister. One of the waitstaff passed by and Dorian caught their attention, requesting an Old Fashioned. “Would you like anything?” he asked Tersha, trying his best to keep his voice even despite his racing pulse. If he was going to drink in order to cope with seeing the ghost of his dead love, he would need company.

My promise to you always and forever
Ariel was having an off day. The normally happy, bubbly baby had woken up early this morning, crying and chewing on the silky edge of her blanket toy. Groggy and still half asleep, Dorian had plucked the little angel from her cot and cradled her in his arms as he strolled around his flat, moving into the kitchen to get a teething ring from the freezer. Ariel already had three teeth; the bottom front two, and one on the top. Making an appearance today was the second top tooth, causing the blonde cuddlebug to cry and reach out to grab at her uncle Dorian’s face, pleading for him to make the pain go away. As if the day wasn’t going to be tough enough on its own.
Ariel on his hip, Dorian knocked on the door to his brother’s flat just down the hall from his own apartment. After a minute without a response, Dorian knocked again as Ariel let out a horrible wail. Dorian pressed her against his chest and kissed the top of her head, stroking her blonde curls gently before a chubby hand reached out and took hold of his index finger, shoving it into her mouth to chew on. Dorian winced as two sharp teeth pressed into the pad of his finger and he carefully pulled his hand away from her mouth and swapped it for her teething ring which hung attached to her romper by a ribbon. “Come on, love. Uncle Julian will meet us there.” They turned away from Julian’s apparently empty flat and headed down the corridor towards the stairs. He didn’t blame Julian for wanting some time alone today, but his brother had not explicitly told him he would be leaving for Godric’s Hollow before them.
Sun shinning on the street, Dorian and Ariel headed to a nearby florist. If they were to pay their respects to Ariel’s mum, they would do so properly. He purchased a small bouquet of three pale peach roses tied with blue ribbon, and stuffed teddy holding a heart that said “You’re beary special” that was meant to go atop a large arrangement but that Ariel had spotted and fussed wildly until she got it. The florist smiled and gave Ariel a pat on the head as the pair thanked the older man and headed out of the shop. There were no other tasks to be done. It was time.
They appeared in a designated area shielded from the muggle population behind a church, a pop sounding their arrival. Dorian inspected Ariel who was gnawing on the ear of her new teddy and then headed in the direction of the field. It had been almost a year since that horrible night when the Death Eaters attacked the carnival, killing dozens, River and Bert among them, and Dorian had only returned a small handful of times. Every visit, until this one, had been in an official capacity for the Auror Department in some way or another. As his first personal visit to Godric’s Hollow in nearly a year, this was not a joyous occasion. What was a birthday without someone to grow a year older?
The slender figure of Julian holding a single balloon could be seen in the distance. Dorian adjusted Ariel in his arms and headed over the grassy field, a blanket of green dotted with patches of dying yellow grass or plots of dirt. Julian grew larger as they approached and Ariel let out another screeching cry, tiny droplets of tears spilling from her eyes as she chewed furiously on her teddy, attempting to soothe herself. Today would not be an easy one for any of them.

Ignoring the crude remark disguised as a fun comment or even a possible compliment toward Dorcas and Tersha, Dorian smiled, his jaw set. “Forgive my rudeness,” though it wasn’t his rudeness that should need to be forgiven. “Julian, this is Tersha Knight. A journalist and fine writer.” He looked from Julian to Tersha. “Tersha,” he gestured at the blond man across the table, “Julian Blackthorne. My brother. You’ve met Lunete at the Ministry, haven’t you?” he asked Tersha, not wanting to be rude by not introducing the women but almost certain he had seen them around the Auror department while Tersha was interviewing agents on a story at some point. “And of course, you all know Miss Meadowes.” Merlin have mercy on him if he forgot to remark on the little brunette witch sitting next to him, despite her knowing each of them better than Dorian knew any of them, aside from his brother who Dorian could admit he didn’t know much better than Dorcas did.
Dishes began appearing on the table, each one different from the one beside it for the most part. It was quite an undertaking on the Minister’s part to have provided so many options for her guests but Dorian had decided to be simple and had requested the soup. An elegant bowl appeared in front of him, the soup within piping hot. Dorian would have been pleased for the distraction the food might have created were it not for the fact that he knew first hand, from far too many occasions, that food would not keep his date’s inappropriate conversation topics (which were bound to come out sooner rather than later) at bay. Throughout the meal, Dorian attempted to keep conversation rather neutral and, given the company, he listened more than he spoke, nodding and making thoughtful noises every now and again.

My promise to you always and forever
He was a relatively smart man and knew that “girl time” meant that he wasn’t invited on this spontaneous outing. Dorian wasn’t sure how that knowledge made him feel. He certainly didn’t want to go round to the shops, and he was certain having lunch with Dorcas would have consisted of inappropriately eaten foods with excessive eye contact and suggestive topics of conversation. He would rather leave all that…elsewhere. Just always elsewhere. The idea of Dorcas on a day out with his eight month old niece without him made him a bit uneasy. He knew Dorcas loved the child, in her own way, and would never put her intentionally in harm’s way, but Dorcas was adamant that she disliked children and so Dorian didn’t really have much faith in her abilities to care for his orphaned niece for long stretches of time. Dorcas was a great impromptu sitter for short durations, like when Dorian needed to pop over to the barber for a haircut or when Ariel was asleep and he needed to run to the shop for some more milk and didn’t want to wake her. A whole girls day of shopping, park, and lunch?
“Is your mum planning to meet up with you?” he asked, trying to keep any hint of insinuation from his tone, and certainly trying to downplay the hopefulness in his voice. He loved Dorcas, in a familial manner, but if she ever had children of her own he was fairly certain Emily would be playing a big role in actually rearing her grandchildren. Emily was a wonderful grandmum to Ariel, just as Andre was a superb grandad, but Dorian – and Dorcas as well, knew that they hoped for grandchildren of their own someday. Dorian didn’t know which side to root for as the idea of Dorcas as a mum was rather unnerving. He adjusted Ariel on his hip as he awaited the answer.

My promise to you always and forever
The tug on his arm was unneeded as Dorian was more than happy to head inside the Minister’s home for dinner. He had nothing against Tersha. She was pleasant enough but she towed the line on being nice and being flirty, and Dorian didn’t need her style of flirting. Much like Dorcas, Tersha was over the top with it all. Mercifully, Dorian knew that neither Tersha nor Dorcas were legitimately interested in him. They both just found it humorous to make him uncomfortable. He was already dealing with Dorcas for the duration of the evening, as he had somehow managed to be wrangled into being her date for this event, he was happy to not have to deal with the two of them while he ate.
Escorting Dorcas inside, the couple was shown to their seats; little placards designated their assigned placements and a quick scan of the script made Dorian’s heart sink just a little. Not only had he not escaped the duo or Dorcas and Tersha, but he was seating right smack between them. Dorian wondered if perhaps he had done something to offend the Minister and this was her way of getting revenge. Keeping his features schooled, Dorian sat at the table and looked across to the empty seats on the opposite side. Perhaps someone more professional (or “grown up”) would be nearby, and Dorian could have a sophisticated conversation about the Minister’s work thus far for the country, and the future of Britain during this civil war. Real party conversations.
The couple across from Dorcas were younger, they looked to be adults but only just. The man was ogling Dorcas, and Dorian turned to look down the opposite side of the table. An older couple, mid-forties he assumed, sat directly opposite them and Dorian struck up a light conversation. A short while later a familiar voice interrupted their talk of taxes, claiming her feet were hurting and leaning in front of Dorian to speak to Dorcas. Dorian pushed his body backwards to create a miniscule amount of space between himself and the young journalist who as she spoke practically on his lap. She straightened herself and then spoke to Dorian next, commenting on the place cards. “The thought hadn’t occurred to me,” he replied.
The empty seats at the table quickly filled, though the pair opposite Dorian remained unoccupied. Dorian spoke a little more with Tersha about the décor, a true nightmare of a topic, in his opinion, but the sound of chairs gently scraping against the floor caught his ear and he looked up to find his half-brother and the Auror-in-training sitting down across from him. Minister Galanis surely was out to get him. “Good evening, Julian, Miss Dearborn. What a pleasant surprise to see you both here.” Together. What was Julian doing with the young Lunete? He hadn’t wanted to think much on it when Dorcas pointed it out earlier, she was attempting to get him to engage in gossip and he wasn’t the sort, but it was a curious pairing nonetheless, and one that could hardly be avoided as they were staring him in the face.

My promise to you always and forever
Geralina was the school librarian at Hogwarts, a position one would normally assume had holidays off, but as Hogwarts was a boarding school there were always at least a few students that hung around during the school breaks, sans the summer holiday. If students were present, it stood to reason that faculty would need to be present as well. It was a logical conclusion, but it hadn’t occurred to Dorian before that Geralina might not have Christmas off. As a student, Dorian had never stayed at the castle over holidays, opting as most did to spend the time with his parents, he didn’t have any first-hand experience with just how many professors and staff were on call during the festive holiday. If she couldn’t make it, so be it, but Dorian rather enjoyed Geralina’s company. She was a comforting figure to discuss his beloved Paris with, but the pair were becoming friends in their own right. Well, as friend-like as Dorian permitted himself to be with others. “It will be good to see her,” he replied, wondering at what point his brother would decided there were simply too many unknown people here for comfort. It was Dorian’s first Christmas with all of these people as well, but Dorian had an advantage that Julian did not – Dorian knew the Meadowes. There certainly wasn’t any ill-will against his brother, and he didn’t want the man to be uneasy at any point but especially not at Christmas. It was Ariel’s first, which meant that it was their first together; his and Julian’s. It wouldn’t be their last. No matter how estranged they had been, they were family and little Ariel could only bring them together.

My promise to you always and forever
Dorcas was settling in as Dorian knew she would, and so he turned back around to finish up Ariel’s bath time routine. A fresh diaper and some powder were the first order of business, knowing from experience that allowing the little munchkin to crawl around bare bottomed was a recipe for disaster. Dorian set her in the middle of his bed and magicked the pillows to create a bumper barrier around her, giving the little girl enough room to move around without having easy access to the floor and a bruised head. Ariel had her own little area in the corner of Dorian’s room. She was quickly growing out of space, but the flat was only a single bedroom and there was no where else to put her. Dorian knew the time was coming and he would have to resign himself to finding somewhere else to live. Someplace big enough to raise his niece properly. She was an active little girl and she enjoyed being outdoors. The rooftop garden wouldn’t satisfy her for long. She needed a proper garden to play in, and her own bedroom.
Turning half way, Dorian pulled on the drawer of Ariel’s dresser, and pulled out an outfit for her to wear. It was not her first one of the day, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. Ariel went through more clothes per week than the contents of Dorian’s entire wardrobe, and the man owned a lot of suits. It would have been easy then for Dorian to give up on trying to make Ariel look presentable. Perhaps if she were his own child he would feel at ease to fall back on letting Ariel wear a simple onesie every day, but this was not his own daughter. She was River’s daughter, and while he had only known his sister for a short while, he knew that she would have put the utmost care and effort to ensuring her little angel was always presentable. Without the feminine eye for baby fashion that new mums seemed to instinctively have, Dorian tried his damnedest to make sure Ariel was cared for in a way that would make River and Bert proud. Today’s outfit, or this morning’s outfit to be more realistic, was a pale purple checked romper with lace on the bum and a white peter pan collar. A pair of matching purple socks were added to keep her feet warm as she crawled around the living room while he and Dorcas spoke about whatever it was she had come over to speak to him about.
Little Ariel in his arms again, her soft blonde curls framing her chubby angelic face, Dorian gave a sweep of his wand and sent his pillows back to the head of his bed in an orderly manner as the pair exited the bedroom. Dorcas was standing near the dining table, Ariel’s nappy bag having been pulled out of the cloak closet and the door still standing open. What was she up to? “Sorry about that. We were just finishing up a bath.” His gaze moved noticeably from Dorcas’ face to the nappy bag resting on the table. “Might I inquire as to your plans?” He sensed something coming that would surely make him on edge.

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Dorian found himself in a repetitious cycle of work, playing dad, and having Sunday lunch with the Meadowes. Nearly every week was the same thing. The long-distance missions for the Ministry were becoming fewer and farther between as the mysterious Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters made their attacks more frequent. There was clearly a pattern to the violence but every once in a while there would be an outlier than perplexed the investigating agents. It was clear to see that this dark wizard had a plan, and more than likely some men inside the Ministry of Magic to aid in his nefarious plots. But Dorian had a little angel to see to, and he had gotten in the habit of staying only an hour or two past his shift before going home, as opposed to the several hours he had once remained late at work to avoid the empty chasm that was his social life.
Ariel was more than enough for Dorian’s social life, but she came with all sorts of added people; some blessings and others remained to be seen. He enjoyed Sunday lunch the Andre and Emily, who spent a large portion of the meal cooing over little Ariel as if she were their own granddaughter. Dorcas’ attendance had been infrequent as of late, but it was to be expected with the added work in the Auror Department. She was single and childless, and a clear target for being handed additional cases. Dorian was once that target, and he still insisted on taking on more than his fair share, but while he had no children of his own he was a father of sorts to his orphaned niece and her welfare and happiness was taken into consideration.
Weekends were not necessarily a day off for the Auror, but this particular Saturday just so happened to be. Ariel had slept in until nearly seven this morning, affording Dorian some time to read in peace before she awoke. After that they had breakfast and then went up to his rooftop garden where Ariel crawled around the patio trying to stick leaves in her mouth as Dorian did a bit of gardening. The little munchkin was not yet a skilled crawler, requiring little breaks every so often to rest her arms and legs from the spasm-like movements that propelled her forward. Ever the concerned parent, Dorian put up a play pin to keep from getting too far but she had yet to make it all the way from one side to the other without getting distracted by something or another.
“Look at you, young lady. That’s not for eating.” Dorian picked up the babe, who had grown longer and more child-like in the last few months, and pulled a leaf from her mouth. He bounced her on his hip as he wiped away a speck of dirt from her nose. She would need more that a little wipe to clean her up. Gardening always made her a mess, which meant Dorian was already planning a late morning bath. “This is why we garden in the morning, before your bath.” He pressed his lips to the top of her head and carried her inside.
There was no such thing a quick bath with Ariel. She loved the water and would splash and squeal every time a droplet fell on her face. She found it even more humorous to get her uncle sopping wet. The front door opening could be heard from the bathroom and then Dorcas’ voice rang out. “Looks like we’ve got a visitor, little Miss. That means bath time is all done.” Dorian lifted Ariel from her bathing seat in the tub and wrapped her in a yellow towel covered with green ducks. He was wet, the undershirt he’d been wearing while gardening and bathing his niece had large patches of water soaked through, and his trousers still had a bit of potting soil on them from where Dorian had wiped his hands.
Towel-wrapped baby on his hip, Dorian poked his head out into the front room and gave Dorcas a warm smile. “Hello, Dorcas. We’ll be right out. Make yourself at home.” He knew she would anyway, so there was no reason not to formally invite her to do so. At least this way Dorian could feign some manner of control in his own home.
