My promise to you always and forever
A lush in the traditional sense was not what Dorian would consider her, but Dorcas had shown up on his doorstep more than once, completely inebriated, missing personal effects, and unable to get herself home from the city safely. At this point, drunk Dorcas knew where the extra blankets and pillows were kept, and despite his offers to allow her to take his bed while he slept on the couch, she was no stranger to sleeping it off in his lounge. Had he not prematurely aged since joining the Aurors, he too might have had a more recent tale of ending up at a mate’s place on occasion, but he and Dorcas had lived very different lives and he couldn’t possibly express his emotions that she had not had to go through the same life changes that he had. Dorcas flashed him a look that was reminiscent of many other looks she’d given him in the past when wanting to make him uncomfortable in her presence and he returned it with a tight smile, though not as tight as he usually would. It was her birthday, after all.
She explained her costume, which really was more like underwear than a costume, and he chuckled. “You know the point of Halloween is dress as something you’re not, don’t you?” he asked as she finally stood up from his lap and sat herself down properly next to him. He adjusted his waistcoat while she made suggestive comments about him biting her. “You’re the second witch to make that joke tonight.” Dorian really had thought his costume would have been a safe choice but nothing was ever safe around Dorcas. He followed suit and lifted his glass from the table in front of them and took a drink as Dorcas demanded a dance. “I only agreed to one dance,” he reminded her, setting his glass back down on the table and rising to his full height. “Are you sure you want to spend it so early in the evening?” He extended his hand to her and prayed to Merlin that he would be able to withhold from dancing all evening. He knew the pressure would only increase as the rest of Dorcas’ girlfriends arrived and he suddenly had a terrifying thought that what if he was the only bloke she’d invited and he was about to be surrounded by a hoard of Dorcas and Tersha and whatever other horned up minxes she had requested to come celebrate growing older by harassing Dorian.

My promise to you always and forever
She emerged from the crowd in a sparkling red little number that was barely more than lingerie. Dorian’s jaw tensed as he gave her a quick look over before Dorcas launched herself onto his lap. She sang a little to herself which made Dorian give a breathy half-laugh. “Did someone start the party early?” Had she been drinking already or was she just extra affectionate because she knew she could get away with it tonight? It was really anyone’s guess. He leaned as far back into the bench seat as possible to create a bit of space between them, which really was impossible with her sitting on him. His hands held her lightly around the waist, high up enough to avoid her bum but low enough to avoid her bra, if she could even wear one under that thing. It was impossibly tiny, and Dorian felt extremely uncomfortable having her stretch out on his lap in such a manner, but he hid his discomfort well. “Happy birthday, Dorcas. You look –” His eyes traveled to her left leg that was outstretched, then back to her painted eyes, “cold. And gorgeous.” As he spoke, his transfigured fangs were visible, giving a hint to his costume, though only a little as he’d taken everything else from his own wardrobe. “I’m offended you can’t tell, I put so much effort into it.” He hadn’t. He gave his fanged teeth a few chomps in her direction. “I’m a vampire, and you are a… I don’t think I should guess.”

My promise to you always and forever
Feeling like an intruder at a family reunion, Dorian stood, his hands in his pockets as he watched his niece stare wide-eyed at her new cousin and babble happily while bopping the boy in the head with the balloon. There was a striking family resemblance between all of the Blackthornes that Dorian had met thus far. Their fair hair and light eyes were a drastic difference to Dorian’s darker features. They might have shared a bloodline, but it was evident that Dorian was not a Blackthorne, nor did he want to be. He was a Humbert, despite having no biological connection to his parents, and while he wouldn’t push his newfound family away, he certainly had never been looking for them. Were there more estranged family members Julian was hiding from him? Dorian couldn’t be certain, though if there were at least any more nieces or nephews out in the world, he suspected this handsome little tot stealing Ariel’s heart would probably spoil the secret and thus it was safe to say he likely did not have any brothers or sisters. You couldn’t trust young children to keep any sort of secret.
Dorian took one of the freshly duplicated balloons from his brother and watched as the man gave instructions to the children. His face seemed brighter now. Dorian understood this. Seeing Ariel after a long day of work often made the Auror’s spirits brighten, he could only imagine the effect one’s child could have after any substantial time apart.
One. Two. Three. Yellow balloons drifted into the sky and Dorian looked upwards after them, as they floated away. “Happy Birthday, River.” It had been nearly a year since River and Bert had passed. Ariel’s birthday, which was coming up next month, would be much more difficult of a celebration, he suspected. Ariel’s birthday would forever share the anniversary of her parents’ death. The pudgy little blonde would have no concept of the tragedy this year, or likely the next few years to come, but there would be a day when Dorian and Julian would be faced with explaining to their niece why their expressions on her birthday mirrored the ones they wore today. A happiness that didn’t quite reach the eyes.

Dorian appreciated the thanks, despite finding it unnecessary. Had an overseas job been brought to his attention, he would have recommended Kit, among a short list of a few others, for the work. They were young and Britain was on the brink of a civil war, they deserved to see something of the world before they were taken from it. This wasn’t a favor he was offering to Kit, not really even though it sounded as such. He was ready and he would do a good job of it, whatever the mission may be. Selfishly, the more Aurors capable of such a wide array of missions, the better it was for Dorian because he would be able to spend more time with his niece. She was growing up far too quickly and he was missing so much of it. Emily had been caring for Ariel when she’d taken her first steps, and he’d been out of the country when she said her first word. He was never gone from her for very long but it was enough to make him stay up at night and fret about the future.
Setting both feet on the ground, Dorian smiled. “She’s well. Growing like a weed.” His eyes held a proud sparkle as he thought of his sweet little angel. He stood and moved once more to his locker, pulling his tie out and running it around the collar of his shirt, looking in the little mirror hung on the inside of his locker door as he tied it properly. “We had her birthday celebration at my flat last month – no, nearly two months ago, and she was absolutely delighted with all the sugary sweets and gifts. There’s not enough space to keep all her new toys.” He gave a small chuckle as he pulled his suit jacket from the wooden hanger and slid his arms through the sleeves. “She’s not spoiled, just well loved, as my mother would have said.” A wave of his wand to fix his hair and Dorian once again looked like his buttoned-up self. He felt immensely better. “How’re your family doing?”

‘Pleasure’ was far too strong a word for their meeting, but Dorian smiled politely and shook the woman’s hand. Touching her was odd. It had been strange enough to see her that night several months ago at the Minister’s Gala, and even earlier passing her in the shop as her little boy ran amok, but standing here speaking to her and holding her hand in his for only a few short moments, that was remarkably odd. He would not have been able to describe it if he had been asked to do so. There was no putting words to it. It was purely emotional. And completely too much for the man who fought hard to keep himself as buttoned up as possible.
Taking his hand back, Dorian readjusted Ariel in his arms as she began tugging at the lapel of his jacket, trying to pull his pocket square loose and stuff it in her mouth. “Are you hungry?” he asked her, pulling the cloth from her mouth but still allowing her to hold it and wiggle it about as if it were a pendant she was waving. “Let’s get you some lunch, little Miss. Then we will visit Uncle Julian for a bit. How does that sound?” Ariel babbled at him and chewed on the pocket square once more, which Dorian took as a sign of agreement. Turning his attention back to Vienna for only a moment, he said, “It was lovely to meet you, Mrs Rosier. I hope your son enjoys his books.”
Setting Ariel into her pram and buckling the straps to keep her safe, Dorian looked at his beautiful blonde niece. She was so happy and bubbly, completely unaware of the turmoil brewing inside her uncle at that very moment. He knelt and picked up the little stack of books they’d looked through, and instead of putting them back on the shelf and just picking one, Dorian decided to purchase them all. The chaos of speaking to – and touching – the doppelganger of his dead love suddenly made Dorian feel as though he couldn’t possibly say no to anything Ariel wanted, even if she had only wanted each book for a few seconds at a time. She deserved to be happy and he would spoil her when he could, within reason. Books, he reasoned, were never something one could have too many of and it was never too early to foster a love of reading, but most importantly he wanted to get the hell away from the embodiment of Paris’ memory as fast as he possibly could.

My promise to you always and forever
Inebriated enough that the horribly embarrassing nickname ‘Hot Humbert’, which he’d heard Paris’ friends use a number of times when she was alive, didn’t phase him, Dorian gave a short bark-like chuckle at Tersha’s statement. Hollow leg. Not likely. Dorian was definitely not an alcoholic by any means, in fact he rarely drank socially at all, but he’d had enough hard times in his young life that binge drinking was not an unfamiliar activity for the Auror. His parents kidnapped and murdered. His girlfriend murdered in front of him, followed shortly by his newly discovered half-sister and her husband leaving him the guardian for his young niece. These were all reasons to drink once in a while and he had apparently built up a bit of a tolerance, though as Dorcas tugged on his arm and he made to stand, the alcohol hit him faster than he’d been expecting.
He was a smart man and knew better than to argue. Dorcas was right, they needed to leave before things got out of hand. Dorian drinking. Tersha wanting to ‘smack a bitch’. Merlin only knew what hellfire Dorcas would send her cousin’s way if they stayed any longer or, gods forbid, she got drunk. “Right. Very good, then.” He stood, wrapping Dorcas’ arm in his as if escorting her but in fact actually using her to ensure he was stable on his feet as the liquor spread through his body more freely. He didn’t stagger or stumble but he held her back just a moment, waiting to see if Tersha was joining them and extending a hand to help her up. He looked across the table to his half-brother and the trainee he wore on his arm as his date. “Julian, Miss Dearborn, it was a pleasure seeing you this evening.” His eyes gave away that he might have had a bit too much to drink but his words were clear and well-spoken. A good sign. He was looking forward to his bed at home, and not yet realizing that he might have to fend off two randy witches who never failed to make an attempt to get into his pants.

My promise to you always and forever
Dorian arrived at the agreed upon time to find that he was, as usual, the only punctual one of the group. It was shocking how lax his friends were, and considering he not only had to get himself ready, but also a toddling little angel and send her off for a fun night with her pseudo grandparents, he really wasn’t expecting to be the first to arrive. Dorian spoke with a man at the cloak check room to see who he could speak to about paying for a private table for the evening. It was last minute, but it would hopefully be a fun surprise the birthday witch and it would give Dorian a place to hide out after the single obligatory dance he had agreed to. An added fee for a last minute reservation was well worth having a place to go without worrying about brushing into sweaty strangers all night, and it came with a waitress who would travel to and from the bar for their group. It wasn’t a half bad deal
True to form, Dorcas hadn’t planned much beyond demanding her friends meet her for drinks and dancing and insist they all come in fancy dress. Originally, he had planned to wear the same costume as last year when Dorcas had drug him and a very tiny Ariel out to dinner with her parents and commanded they all dress up. He had been Batman and Ariel had been a tiny Batgirl. This year she was a chicken, something fluffy Dorcas had picked out, and Dorian would have been Batman again but apparently he was being a wet blanket by not planning another outfit, so he went with something simple and came as a vampire. He transfigured his teeth to look like fangs and used a little fake blood around the mouth, then found a comfortable button down paired with a dark waistcoat and a pair of trousers. A dressed down version of his usual attire and yet it passed under the minimal definition of a costume. If Dorcas didn’t like it, perhaps the private table would make her happy until something distracted her like a shiny object or a bottle of liquor.
The young brunette waitress asked if he wanted anything and since it was a party, sort of, Dorian ordered an Old Fashion. The witch complimented his costume and made an inappropriate remark about biting her, which made Dorian’s jaw set as she walked away, her too short dress leaving practically nothing to the imagination. He sat back against the sofa that faced the dance floor, watching the door for any familiar faces in case the doorman got too busy to point Dorcas and her friends in his direction.

My promise to you always and forever
Questions continued to spring to mind as Tristan opened his mouth to greet Dorian politely, and an unmistakable Irish accent popped out. Julian, nor River for that matter, had even the slightest hint of an Irish accent. He’d heard no tale of the family moving to Ireland for a spell, nor of Julian having spent much time in the country on the many occasions he abandoned his parents and sister to bum around like a wild child, though to be fair, he’d not heard much about what Julian got up to when he was away. River’s stories tended to focus on his return from his misadventures and how wonderful it was to have him home for a short time. Dorian’s gaze lifted to look at his half-brother for only a second as Tristan spoke, before turning his eyes back to the young lad.
Their relationship explained, Tristan moved closer to Dorian who waited to be evaluated by the little blond. “I’ve never had a nephew before. It’s fun, isn’t it?” The boy asked about a sleepover and Dorian blinked at his straight forward nature. “Well,” he started carefully, “I think you ought to talk to your father about that first. I bet he has plans for the two of you and you don’t want to miss out on any fun.” A bit of trust went a long way, but surely Julian wouldn’t put so much trust in Dorian on the first day he’d learned that Julian was a father. And truly, with the boy having been absolutely nowhere to be seen for the past eight months, Julian had to be planning to spend some quality time with the child. Dorian would have to create some plans of his own for the evening, because this shocking revelation needed some thinking through, and Andre seemed the perfect person to help Dorian come to grips that he was now an uncle twice over.

Shirt mostly buttoned, Dorian pulled his trousers from the locker and stepped into them, stuffing his shirt tail into the waist and smoothing out and large rippled before he fastened the button and pulled the zipper up. Another round of shirt tucking ensured his lines were crisp. He was already feeling much more like himself. “They used to,” he said in response to Kit’s question about travelling for work. “Not quite as much since I’ve taken custody of my niece, but before Ariel I probably went a couple times a year, depending on the job.” Pulling a pair a sharp dress shoes from the locker, Dorian sat once again on the bench and continued talking. “I went to Egypt when I was about your age,” he remarked, sounding much older than he actually was, and not lingering on that particular mission for long. Dorian’s parents had died not long after his trip to Egypt, he didn’t like to think on it too much. “And Russia a few times since.” Setting one shoed foot down on the ground, Dorian lifted the other one, crossing his ankle over his knee as he slid the remaining shoe on his foot. “I prefer staying local myself, but if you’re looking to venture out a bit more, I’d be happy to bring pass on a good word. After today, I doubt anyone would argue your ability to improvise.”

My promise to you always and forever
Ariel had stumbled from her feet, falling onto her backside with a little plop that made the sweet angel giggle after a brief moment of stunned silence. Both hands clutching a book with two figures on the front cover, flying through the air on brooms. Ariel patted the book excitedly, smiling and giggling in an almost screech-like volume. Dorian smiled proudly as he watched his niece play with the book on the floor in front of her. He wondered if he had been as interested in books at this age, and whether that had anything to do with his love of reading as an adult. He hadn’t thought to ask his parents before their deaths, with no young children in his life then to evoke the thought. Perhaps River had been intrigued with books as a child. Dorian made a mental note to include this as a possible discussion topic with Julian, a task he found himself doing more often. Getting to know his brother and that part of his family was no simple task now that River was gone. Julian was more reserved with which family stories he decided to share, and more closed off in general than their sister had been. It made it difficult to get to know the man but for Ariel’s sake Dorian would put forth the effort.
The little boy who had previously been running amok in the store when they’d arrived had tottered up to Ariel and Dorian noted that he looked much younger than he’d originally expected. Still large for his age, the boy, Maxi, had more chub on his cheeks and in general looked to be not that much older than Ariel. Vienna called her son’s name as Max grabbed the book Ariel had been looking at. Ariel’s eyes followed the book, Dorian’s turned up to the woman moving closer to them. “That’s alright,” Dorian said gently as she guided her son to return the book to Ariel. “We have been working on sharing.” Ariel was a bit young to really understand such a concept, but Dorian felt impolite saying anything to the contrary, and Ariel hadn’t been upset event. She was more intrigued by the little boy, watching him walk around with an ease she’d not yet established.
He was in such an awkward position for greeting someone, especially the estranged sister of his dead girlfriend. Squatting close to the floor near Ariel so that he could point to the pictures and label them for her, Dorian looked up at the woman before rising to his full height, plucking his niece from the floor. Baby tucked against his suit jacket with his left arm, Dorian extended his right hand. “Dorian Humbert,” he said formally. “I believe I knew your sister.” There was no avoiding it now, so he had decided to lean in and simply introduce himself. Perhaps it would help to keep his eyes from lingering on her in a potentially creepy manner if he simply spoke to her.

The locker room wasn’t necessarily free from judgement but it was better than the common areas where just about anyone could look at them. Kit was unrecognizable but Dorian had a sense that he wasn’t quite as lucky. It might have been the way he walked or how he interacted with people now that his mission was complete but Dorian always felt as though he was being watched rather carefully inside the Ministry building. He would feel better once he was out of this ridiculous outfit. Dorian’s locker was further down than Kit’s and he listened to the explanation of Kit’s clowning adventure as he turned the combination and opened the locker to reveal his traditional attire. He gave a short chuckle when pie was mentioned. “I’m not sure anyone would think to ask me to play a clown,” he remarked, though Kit wasn’t anymore clown-like than Dorian, he thought. Pulling the hideous, shiny jacket off, Dorian took a hanger from his locker and hung the ridiculous thing as though it were one of his precious suits. The tank top underneath was almost equally as ugly and as Dorian stripped it off he couldn’t help but wonder how society was ever going to make it if this was what people considered fashionable.
Sitting on the bench that separated the rows of lockers, Dorian began to untie his trainers, pulling them off and setting them neatly on the floor. He stood and pulled his trousers off next, then folded them over the same hanger as he’d placed his track jacket. The outfit was complete once again. “My worst,” Dorian started, turning to look toward Kit as he pulled a white button down from a wooden hanger inside his locker, “was a purple velvet suit and matching wide-brimmed hat.” He pulled his arm through the sleeve and brought the shirt around behind him, sliding his other arm into the remaining sleeve. “I was undercover in the states for a few months a couple years back.” He began buttoning the shirt, hiding the scars that decorated his chest. “As a pimp,” he added, his eyes rolling upwards. “Dark wizard kidnapping muggles for a sex trafficking ring. Of all the outfits I had to wear on that mission, the purple velvet suit still haunts me.” It wasn’t a laughing matter, the purpose for him having gone undercover, but they’d been successful in stopping most of the traffickers and sometimes you just had to laugh at yourself.

My promise to you always and forever
Headed towards the children’s section, a woman passed by them and Dorian felt a swelling of emotion. It had been several months since he’d seen her at the former Minister for Magic’s spring soiree but even longer still since he’d felt this instant rush of happiness her face brought with him. Unencumbered by the expectations of seeing hundreds of somewhat familiar faces, friend and foe, that the Minister’s party had placed on him, Dorian’s first thought at seeing her was Paris. Not that she reminded him of Paris, nor even that she looked like Paris – impossibly so. It was more than a year and a half ago that he’d last felt the warmth of her touch but it was as thought it had only been a day as she passed by him. The illusion was shattered as she leaned down to speak to the child who was running amok in the bookshop, destroying merchandise his mother seemed not to be planning to pay for. The least of her personality flaws, if Paris’ rendition of her family was at all accurate. A happy squeal coming from Ariel as she reached again for a tantalizing book not meant for a child her age reminded Dorian that he was not without his own family drama.
As Paris’ nephew ran off towards the children’s section, Dorian caught sight of Vienna’s posture. Hand rested on the small bump that was her stomach. Raised better than to make a comment on a woman’s figure, Dorian didn’t need to ask in order to know, she was pregnant. It was a strange sight and he had to force his mind to remember that this was not Paris, though logically he knew it. A brief moment of evaluation was all the time he spent on Vienna before continuing on with Ariel to let her pick out a new book. She was taking a few steps here and there now, so when they arrived at the little corner filled with colorful cardboard and felt covered books, Dorian unbuckled her from her seat and allowed Ariel to totter while clutching the shelf. “That’s a good choice,” he remarked to his niece as she pulled on a bright red book with big yellow block letters on the front that read ‘ABC’. A picture of an apple, a broomstick, and a cauldron on the front. Ariel let the book fall to the ground, tracking it with her eyes before looking to the next book on the shelf. "Not sure about it, then? Alright. We'll keep shopping." Dorian knelt by his niece, picking each book up after she dropped it to the floor and trying to draw her attention back to it in the hopes she might take more of an interest in one if she saw the brightly colored, moving pictures inside.

My promise to you always and forever
His hands free of the child, Dorian situated the flowers and teddy more sturdily in has hands, no longer feeling as though he were about to drop them. He would, of course, drops anything and everything, wand included, if there was ever the chance that his sweet baby niece was going to fall from his arms. There were so many positives to having Julian in Ariel’s life – even if Dorian was still mildly weary – but an extra set of arms was quite low on the list. Dorian smiled at Ariel as she played with her balloon in her uncle’s arms, his jaw tightening only slightly as Julian made a comment about Ariel biting him. Were they at the point in their relationship for teasing? Dorian didn’t think so but he also wasn’t overly fond of teasing as a show of affection. In most cases it seemed meanspirited but there were times, rare as they may be, where Dorian partook. Did Julian think they were at that level now? Was he a big teaser? He seemed the type. Informed of more mourners, Dorian followed Julian’s gaze to the edge of the field where a woman with a child stood. Dorian didn’t recognize them. He watched as the woman bent down and spoke to the child and then the child turned and began running in their direction. It didn’t take a skilled detective to figure out who this young lad was but it was shocking nonetheless, as Julian had never made mention that he had any children. Were there more? Where had this boy been for the better part of a year that Dorian had known Julian? The man lived – obnoxiously – directly down the hall from him and yet Dorian had seen neither hide nor hair of this happy little boy or his mum. It played into the notion that Julian was unfit to care for Ariel full time, seeing as how he had apparently abandoned his own child and not ever bothered to mention his existence once. River was right to worry about her brother but without the bond and affection the deceased witch held for Julian, the meeting didn’t make Dorian think more of his brother. It did the opposite and there was pity in Dorian’s heart for the little lad, though he kept his emotions well hidden.
A bit of trust. An interesting way of putting it. The little boy clung to his father’s leg and Julian introduced him. Dorian smiled, squatting down to the child’s level and looking him in the eye. “Hello, Tristan. My name is Dorian. It is a pleasure to meet you.” The boy as all Julian, from his mop of curly blonde hair to the dimple in his chin. Had Dorian’s biological mother raised him, this might have been the face he had played with while growing up. Ariel was a mini version of River, so it made sense that Tristan looked the spitting image of his father. The Blackthornes had strong genes. “That is your cousin, Ariel,” he said, gesturing to the baby in the boy’s father’s arms. “We are both so excited to meet you.” Excited… caught off-guard. It was one in the same at this point, really. Thousands of questions sprang to mind but now was not the time.

My promise to you always and forever
He had started the evening respectably enough, ordering a single drink and waiting a brief moment with his empty glass before he politely requested another without having to flag the waiter down. Tersha, on the other hand, had her bottle of vodka and was doing quite well with it. He’d helped her out a bit while waiting on the server for his own drink, mixing his whiskey with vodka and not bothering to keep in mind the old witch’s tale warning against such a thing. Stolen glances down the table caused a swelling pain in his chest. The smart thing to do would have been to simply stop looking toward Paris’ sister, Vienna, but it was an almost compulsive need he had in that moment to look upon her. To imagine it was Paris, alive and well, smiling that strange smile that Vienna had that reminded him all too brutally that Paris was gone. Time passed quickly and had the waitstaff not been so attentive there would have been a steadily growing, impressive collection of empty glasses forming around Dorian’s dinner plate.
Forgotten was his brother sitting across the way with his age-inappropriate girlfriend. Forgotten was the minister for magic sitting at the head of the table, technically his boss if you followed the chain of command back far enough. Forgotten, even, was Dorcas until she appeared and questioned him, to which he stared at her blankly for just a moment before his eyes moved purposefully toward Vienna. “I wasn’t aware your cousin would be here,” he said in what he intended to be a matter of fact tone but gave off an annoyed undertone, hinting only an incy bit at the amount of alcohol he had consumed thus far. “I knew they were twins, but…” They simply looked too similar. How on Earth was that possible? Sober Dorian would have known that answer but he had left, leaving something more than buzzed Dorian in his place. At least the rest of the gala’s guests had gotten a little rowdier, a little noisier in their comfort and drink so that his demeanor was not drawing him unwanted attention.
Sliding an empty glass in front of Dorcas’ setting at the table, Dorian then reached for the bottle of vodka that Tersha had ordered. “Do you mind?” he asked, not wanting to just steal her drink away from her but at the same time he was almost certain that Tersha would share with her best friend, Dorcas. It would have been so much easier had the Minister simply sat the women together and put Dorian on the end, but no matter how many times tonight Dorian stated as much in his head, it just wasn’t the situation they were faced with. At least the evening had descended into something a little more casual and Dorian wouldn’t feel quite so awkward if he wanted to swap chairs with one of the witches later in the evening, though the idea hadn’t yet come to mind.

My promise to you always and forever
It was always a pleasure to be partnered with Agent Devereaux for a mission, even if it meant going undercover in such ridiculous garb. The men had to look the part and while they had certainly turned a few heads here at the office, they blended in well at gym where they’d been surveilling a bloke with ties to the wizard mob. No one even gave them a second glance as they moved around the circuit, only making contact once when Dorian “accidentally” tried to take the same machine as their target so that he could take an imprint of the man’s hand. Other than the brief encounter, it was a no thrills mission for today, but one that would require additional follow up. This wouldn’t be the last time Agents Humbert and Devereaux assumed the roles of Harvey Norgenbloom and Rex Buckingham, respectively.
A hot coffee and a genial smile for the witch working the counter in the cafeteria (of which remained mostly unnoticed as the unsightly facial hair blocked the view of his mouth), and the two men were headed for the lifts. A pair of hit witches fell in the queue for the elevators behind them as Kit asked if they could change before reporting back to the department head. “Definitely time for a change of clothes,” he said as the witches giggled behind them like schoolgirls. Dorian enjoyed Kit. They were similar enough that Dorian didn’t feel the need to put forth a lot of additional effort when socializing, not because he didn’t think Agent Devereaux wasn’t deserving of it, but because the reserved young Auror understood him more than most the other agents. It had been Kit’s demure demeanor that first caught Dorian’s attention years back when the younger wizard was first starting his training in the academy, but it was his unparalleled skill that forced Dorian’s respect for the man.
The gate for the elevator slide to the side and Dorian held it open, allowing the ladies and Kit to board first. As he stepped onto the lift, Dorian pressed the button labeled Two. “Second level, ladies?” he asked, ensuring he was correct in assuming they were heading back to their office and instead of attempting to go elsewhere. “Wherever you lot are going, that’s us too,” remarked the witch with mousy brown hair and eyes the size of golf balls. They laughed softly again, looking Kit up and down as if he were a steak before clapping their hands over their mouths. “Right,” Dorian replied, and fell in place facing the door of the elevator. When they reached the second level, Dorian again held the door for the women, then turned in the opposite direction and headed for the locker room. “Surprisingly, this isn’t one of the more regrettable outfits I’ve donned in this line of work,” he said to Kit as they made their way into the locker room to change.
