The sound of her alarm clock ringing next to her head was a familiar one. Ever since she was eleven years old she'd had the same alarm clock, a gift from her abuela and abuelo for when she started Hogwarts. She'd been sure to keep it in good shape. It was one of her most prized possessions, not for its worth but for its sentimental value. It was an old alarm clock, it was worth nothing to everyone else in the world, but to Immy it was worth the world. She knew that her grandparents on her mother's side hadn't had much to give and so every time they gave something she was forever grateful. She cherished so many little things from them, things that were only meant to last a short while and things that were meant to last a life time, although nothing was more valuable than her time with them. She liked her alarm clock. It was the one thing she used every day, even on her days off. It was a reminder for her of her family and she couldn't wait for her next visit with them in a couple of months.
Out of bed and into her usual wake up routine Immy went through the motions. There wasn't anything unusual about it apart from the fact she was waking up at two in the afternoon. She'd pulled a double shift at the hospital the day before which had bled into the night, covering the first half of a shift before someone else came in early at four in the morning, and so she'd needed the extra sleep desperately. It didn't matter though, she was going in early again today to cover another half-shift, taking over early from Gayle who'd covered the first half of the shift. There was something going around at work, a nasty little bug that required a good strong potion and a couple of days rest. Immy was glad she had a decent immune system but not everyone was so fortunate.
Dressed and leaving the apartment Immy made her way to work. She was there in next to no time and making her way into the staff room where the big board sat with every patients name, bed and room number. Immy took a file from the head matron, she'd been the one organising all the shifts so that no one would have to pull a full double and Immy was darn pleased to have her figuring everything out because double shifts were awful.
Getting her list of patients Immy had a read of the files and did a handover with the Healer whose patients she was taking. She made her first visit to an elderly gentleman, taking in a pre-made potion for his spattergroit, a highly contagious disease that Immy was protected against with a couple of really good spells. Once she was done she washed up and ready for the next patient. She picked up the file and had a quick skim. Dragon Pox. She got what she needed and made her way into the room, the girl didn't look much younger than herself but her skin was positively covered in the horrid blemishes, her skin green from the rash that was spread all over her body. Immy gave her the next round of treatment and promised to be back in a little while. Leaving the room she went and washed herself once more, being sure not to pass on any of the contagious diseases. Once she was done she moved to the matron's ward desk and picked up the next file. She made her way down the hall and knocked on the door to the private room. Miss Ariel Blackthorn-Humbert. Quite a mouthful, but at 18 months, Immy doubted she was saying her whole name quite yet. After a slight pause Immy let herself in with a smile, "Good afternooon," She said looking from the girls dad and to the little girl before returning her gaze to the father, "I'm healer Fenwick." She said, introducing herself formally first, closing the door behind herself as she did, "But you can call me Immy." She said to the toddler, keeping a friendly face to try and help keep the child as clam as possible and hopefully get her to relax a little, "And what brings Miss Ariel in to us today?" She asked, chatting away to dad but seeming to address the child to keep an air of friendliness about the place.

My promise to you always and forever
It had started Friday night with whining and sniffles. Ariel climbed into her uncle’s lap as he read her a story before bed and when she buried her head into his chest, he could feel the fever through his shirt. Initially he suspected the whining was due to her having not slept long during her earlier nap, getting distracted by her uncle Julian and cousin Tristan who had come to see their new home but by the evening it was evident Ariel was ill. She insisted on sleeping with Dorian that night, meaning Dorian hardly got any sleep at all between the crying, the coughing, and the little limbs that seemed to elongate as the night wore on. Saturday hadn’t been any better. Completely knackered and refusing to eat while she insisted on running amok among the unpacked boxes and furniture. By late Saturday, Ariel was sneezing violently and with every fit came a strange result; Ariel’s beautiful blonde curls would go straight as an arrow. After a few moments her hair would show a little wave and a few minutes later her little ringlets would return, but the more she sneezed the longer her hair would stay straight. It was the strangest sight and gave Dorian all manner of emotions that he couldn’t quite explain to anyone else without sounding like a nutter.
They were waiting for only a few minutes in the little room, after a much longer wait out in the waiting room where all the other sick children and teenagers sat until they were called in. Ariel was sat looking at a picture book, poking the cartoon-like ducks in the illustrated pond and making them quack. She laughed and continued poking as the healer knocked on the door and then let herself in. The witch introduced herself and Dorian extended his hand to shake hers in greeting. “Agent Humbert,” he said reflexively, then catching himself he corrected, “Dorian. Sorry. It's been a long day.” He desperately needed a nap and a few days rest from work. He would have neither anytime soon. Turning to look at Ariel, her curls on full display at the moment as she stared up at the healer. “Some sort of cold virus, she’s had a fever and a cough, watery eyes. It all seemed relatively common until last night when she began sneezing.” Ariel sniffled and rubbed her nose on the back of her hand then reached out for her uncle to pick her up. Dorian did so and turned her to face the healer as she snuggled her back into his chest. “Her hair goes straight when she sneezes. I’ve never seen anything like it.” It was perplexing, yes, but more so for Dorian it was worrisome. River would have adored her daughter’s curls, they were perfect and looked just like River’s own hair had. Ariel was the spitting image of her mum and losing her curls even for a few minutes at a time made Dorian feel queasy.

Immy shook the hand of the gentleman who seemed to be a little more old fashioned than she was used to. He used his title and that explained his formality. Im paid attention to the little blonde pixie that wanted to stay with her daddy, It was extremely common for children to need their parental figure when faced with uncertain circumstances, and that wasn't something people outgrew. It was human nature to look for protection and reassurance. She'd seen seventy year old witches and wizards turn to their 90-plus year old parent for support. It was a very pure and very sweet moment to witness, always.
Agent Humbert listed the various reasons for their visit to the hospital today. Immy nodded, making notes with a quill that made her handwriting legible despite her healers scrawl. Without the quill there'd be no hope in magic of reading what she'd written because she simply wrote too fast, her mind raced through the symptoms but honestly, s concerned as Ariel's daddy was, it didn't sound all that serious. Just a cold with few magical side affects. Quite common in magical children and each side affect could vary from child to child. One thing was reassuring for parents with children who exhibited extra symptoms alongside their colds - they were magical. At 18 months it was considered early to show signs of magic but it was certainly something to be proud of, although it wasn't the best way to find out you had magical child! Most parents would prefer finding out without their child getting poorly. "I'll just get a few things for a check up. I'll be back in a minute." She gave a small nod and exited the room, shutting the door behind her. She made her way to the work stations and pulled out a trolley, checking it for all the bits she'd need. She took a few tools and put them into her pockets that were hidden in her dress and placed Ariel's file on the top with a self inking grey quill that she'd make notes with.
Immy made her way back to the room, knocking on the door and letting herself in once more. "I'll just do a check and see what we're dealing with," She smiled, popping on a pair of gloves. She pulled out her otoscope from her trolley, uncapping it and putting on a new head, figuring her ears would be the best place to start. She pulled her wand out and gave it a flourish, a ring of bright blue birds starting chirping and circling overhead to distract the toddler, "I'm just going to check your ears, Ariel." She said, watching the toddler but she wasn't paying attention, she was curled up with her dad and watching the birds fly overhead.
While Ariel was distracted watching the birds Immy pocketed her wand checked Ariel's ears. After, she pulled out her ophthalmoscope and checked Ariel's eyes. They were a little red but mostly clear which was a good sign. Next she had a look in Ariel's mouth while the birds performed little stunts in the air to keep Ariel interested. Her throat was a little inflammed, no doubt from the cold virus she seemed to have, but there seemed nothing untoward or magical. Putting away all her instruments Immy felt around Ariel's neck. She didn't seem to happy about that but there was nothing out of the ordinary so Immy let her go. "Nearly done, sweetheart." She said. Finally she pulled out her stethoscope and listened to Ariel's lungs and heart. Front and back before she straightened herself up and made more notes.

My promise to you always and forever
The healer listened as Dorian explained his concerns and as he said them aloud he knew they would sound mild to the professional who was used to dealing with much more severe cases than a little girl with a cold. Still, it was concerning for Dorian and it was the first time in her life Ariel had fallen ill with any magical symptoms, so she was understandably concerned. At least, Dorian felt it was understandable. He did have a nasty habit of thinking the worst in most scenarios, a lovely side effect of his training and the personal sorrows he’d experienced over the years. The first time Ariel had scratched her face as an infant he scoured his reference books for any mention of diseases from infection in scrapes on the face. When she began walking and fell over, knocking into a nearby table and leaving a nasty egg on the back of her, he was certain she would be forever disfigured. He couldn’t remember ever being so neurotic in the past, even after his parents’ murders or losing Paris. It wasn’t even losing River and Bert that had triggered it. It was being wholly responsible for this innocent creature in a way he had never been responsible for anyone else. Paris’ death was his fault in that he did not get to her in time to save her. His parents’ deaths were his fault in that their kidnapping and torture had been a direct response to his work as an Auror. River and Bert might have been spared had he insisted more adamantly that they not attend the carnival that summer. But all of them had been adults, making choices for themselves and more than capable of sustaining a life without him. Ariel on the other hand, as she curled herself up on Dorian’s lap, giving a little whine as her nose began to run again, needed him completely and he was terrified of that responsibility.
The healer was only absent from the room for a short moment before she returned and began her check up. Dorian tried to keep Ariel as still as possible, comforting her until the birds appeared overhead and distracted her thoroughly. “That’s a clever trick,” he stated aloud, imagining how useful it would have been in the past to distract her like this and making a mental note to remember it the next time he needed to keep her occupied for a short period. Dorian watched the woman work, his eyes shifting between Ariel as she began to fuss and the cool, collected witch who managed to get everything accomplished without completely upsetting the toddler. It was quite impressive. “You must see a lot of this in young children?” he asked, wanting reassurance that his worries were for nothing. “Her mum would have loved her curls, and I don’t want to risk her losing them.” It sounded even more foolish aloud than it had in his head. River would have wanted her daughter healthy more than her spitting image but Dorian knew Ariel would overcome the cold. It was the magic that worried him.

Really it was all a bit much for someone so young to understand that what was going on was for her own good. Immy knew she was nothing but a stranger to this littler girl and so she hoped to make her experience with St Mungo's a positive one. Lots of talking and reassuring from her dad would help a lot and Immy would keep a calm and cheery demeanour. Hugs were especially good, from dad, not Im, but sometimes it was just hard for a kid to find comfort, especially in strange surroundings when there something the matter. Immy empathised with both the kids and the parents when little ones had to make a trip to the hospital. It was never easy seeing someone so small go through anything even remotely unsettling and kids were learning that their bodies weren't invincible. Someone as young as Ariel, however, probably didn't even realise there was anything going on. She might have felt a little off but she wasn't able to express her discomfort in the same way an adult might which could be frustrating all on its own, so to have that while feeling under the weather was really quite a lot for a little one to handle.
"Mmm." She said in response to Dorian, looking up from her notes and nodding, while he went on to mention the girls mother, making it sound as though she was no longer around which was just devastating. So sad for such a little one to have lost a parent. "Based on what I've seen it just looks like Ariel has a common cold." She said, smiling softly, knowing that it wasn't that big of a deal right now and most parents, upon receiving such a diagnosis, usually felt a little foolish for overreacting, but Immy, much like all the other Healers she knew, would much rather a parent being overly vigilant than ignoring symptoms, hoping they'll pass and then finding the child had something mush worse than the sniffles. "Common colds are very simple to treat. I can give Ariel some Pepperup potion for under twos. It'll help clear her up nice and fast. She might experience a little steam from the ears but there shouldn't be any discomfort." She paused for a moment, allowing for everything to sink in for Dorian. Hopefully his worries would be soothed. She'd fetch the potion in just a minute, she had to be sure Dorian was taking in what she was telling him. With a title like Agent she knew not a lot would phase him, but when it involved the health of a loved one, anyone could be shaken, "If she has any reaction at all out of the ordinary, come straight back to us." Immy was confident that Ariel would be fine. Apart from the cold she seemed in perfectly good health, "As for Ariel's hair," She smiled, "I think that might just be her magic making itself known." She was quite young but it wasn't unusual for magic to present this early and typically it would be cause for celebration but she could understand if the handsome Agent Humbert was far from celebratory.

Ariel was nearly crying now, her fussing having intensified even though the healer had finished examining her and was busy writing in her chart. Dorian stood and turned the toddler in toward his chest, swaying from side to side and giving her a soft bounce as he rubbed her back and listened to what Healer Fenwick had to say. Upon news that it was nothing more than a common cold, the inevitable feeling of foolishness began to niggle at him. He could have purchased Pepper Up Potion at the local apothecary and he even guessed that Andre would have nice recipe for something similar, though perhaps not one for children quite as young as Ariel. Despite feeling as though he had perhaps overreacted a little, Dorian was adamant that he had done the right thing in having his niece looked over by a professional. He would always be a bit more vigilant than was necessary, but when raising an orphan it was important to make sure you did your absolute best to make sure the child knew they were safe and loved. Even if Ariel was too young to discuss such concepts, he was certain she felt them.
“Thank you, Ms Fenwick.” There was clear relief in his voice as she explained the concerns with his niece’s hair was not due to her illness but to her magic. That was a shocking little bonus he honestly hadn’t been expecting. He tilted his head down, chin nearly touching his chest as he tried to catch Ariel’s gaze and she whined and rubbed her snotty face into his shirt. “You’re such a brilliant little girl, you’re already doing magic,” he said excitedly. “Perhaps you’ll be a prefect one day like your Uncle Dorian, eh? Smart little girl.” Ariel was having none of it, rubbing her eyes and looking as though she was ready for nice nap to try to sleep away the cold. Kissing the top of her head and giving her a gentle but firm squeeze, Dorian let the child snuggle into his chest as he continued to rock her back and forth.

It had clearly all been a bit much for the poor little darling. She was fussing to the point of crying and while Agent Humbert was indeed pleased that Ariel was showing magic, she was not so impressed. "I'll just get the potion and then you guys will be out of here in no time." She hoped little Ariel wouldn't get too fussy while she was gone but until she had a little potion in her, she was probably going to be extremely uncomfortable and ready for bed, which of course she would fight the urge to sleep because what toddler willing went to sleep?
Immy exited the room and made her way to potions dispensary. "Hey Eunice. Pepperup for under two." An elderly witch looked up from her paperwork, or was that a magazine? She pushed her chair back, her thick glasses that magnified her eyes slipped down her nose a little and she pushed them back up. Eunice stood up and got out of her chair, one of her stockings had a ladder while the other had slipped down around her ankle, her hair was up in an untidy bun and she dawdled around, getting a form and putting it on the counter in front of Immy who began filling it out. The little old woman, who was rather plump around the middle, gave her wand a wave and potions started shifting around. Immy filled out the form and waited as Eunice got the requested potion.
Eunice handed the potion over and Immy checked it out. Eunice gave her a little pipette so she could get the potion into Ariel. It was all wrapped up and Immy headed back to the patient's room. "How're we doing in here?" She asked, pulling the potion from her pocket and setting it on the counter. She then pulled out the pipette out and unwrapped it, placing it down on top of its own wrapping to keep it sterile. She uncorked the potion, triple checking it as she did, knowing you could never be too careful when it came to kids. After Ariel had some Pepperup Potion she'd be cleared up in no time with harmless smoke coming out of her ears. It might look a little alarming to see a child less than two with smoke coming out of her ears but it wouldn't hurt, Ariel would be fine, Immy decided she would stick around for a few moments after administering the potion, just to make sure there was no adverse reaction.

There was still fussing when the door opened again and Healer Fenwick returned but she snuggling into her uncle’s chest quite comfortably and Dorian knew that alone would help to soothe little Ariel. She was a very affectionate child and she loved being held and hugged and given any sort of attention. She always seemed to know when people were talking about her, even if her name hadn’t been mentioned, and would make her way over and interject herself into the conversation to make sure she got just the right amount of attention. Whenever she was sad or hurt, a good snuggle always helped to soothe her but the Pepperup Potion would do its part to help her fight off the cold so she could get back to her cheery little self.
“We’re ready to start feeling better, aren’t we?” he said in response to the healer’s question, getting Ariel’s confirmation nonverbally as she rubbed her eyes and her nose with her whole fist. Dorian was certain the woman’s question had been rhetorical, most medical professionals that he’d experienced sort of went into autopilot with their bedside manners, especially once they’d made a diagnosis and decided on the route for treatment. By that point how you were feeling was basically background noise to them, he assumed, but he still liked to answer in some manner for those rare healers and matrons who actually wanted to listen. “It is going to be so silly having wind in your ears, lovey.” He was pulling out all the affectionate nicknames today, trying his best to be as comforting as possible for the little tot who was fully uncomfortable. Adjusting Ariel in his arms once more so that she faced the healer (and leaving a lovely splotch of wetness on the front of his button down that he preferred to think of as just tears but was most certainly something more disgusting) he spoke softly to his niece. “Ready for some yummy medicine?”

Immy thought that Ariel was handling the situation tremendously at the moment. A lot of kids she got to treat were usually in fits of tears and it was near impossible to help them in smooth and easy way. Ariel was unsettled but she was unwell so it was to be expected. She was certainly a daddy's girl as she snuggled in against him. "I'm glad to hear it." She said with a smile, hoping this would run smoothly. Immy readied the medicine while Dorian readied Ariel. He managed so sweetly given it was a worrying situation and she was such a tiny human being. It was clear to Immy that this was his first child, he had that worry that parents with other children had lost after their first. Once Immy had the pink syringe ready with potion she double checked the dosage and crouched down in front of Ariel. "Ariel, I've got this very yummy medicine for you." She told the toddler, "It tastes like yummy, yummy sweeties and I promise it will make you feel better very soon." Immy pulled out her wand and created a kaleidoscope of different coloured butterflies that weren't close enough to startle little Ariel, it was amazing how many toddlers were frightful of their fast flapping, despite being such a small and delicate creature.
While Ariel was distracted Immy eased the syringe into Ariel's mouth and trickled the medicine into her mouth. The little darling looked to Immy but took the potion, enjoying its taste. Once the syringe was empty, Immy stood and looked at her watch. Any second now she'd have a little steam coming from her ears that would only last a little while, but would let them know that the potion was starting to work. The butterflies made what looked like a tornado of colour and then the steam started. Immy sighed in relief. "That's it! You're free to head home." She smiled, grabbing a new syringe and the remaining pepperup potion. "If her symptoms are back tomorrow you can give Ariel the remainder of the vial. It tastes like sweet berries so there's usually not an issue in getting the little ones to take it again." She reassured Dorian, placing the potion and the syringe in a white paper bag. Soon Ariel would be feeling much better and both she and her daddy would be able to get some much needed rest.

My promise to you always and forever
Still slightly unsettled about the temporary loss of curls her cold was presenting, even if it was in fact a sign of her magic, Dorian was no where near as unsettled as Ariel was. Rubbing her face, smearing wetness all around her, she fussed, little tears forming in her eyes. Thankfully, the healer did quite well with the little toddler and was able to distract the blonde with some colorful butterflies as she slipped the medicine into her mouth. Aside from the foolishness he’d felt at discovering he might have perhaps been a little overzealous about bringing Ariel to the hospital, he had learned a handful of new tricks that ought to help him out in the future should he ever need to distract Ariel for a moment or two. No doubt he would be using them soon enough.
Ariel took her medicine without much of a struggle and when the steam started spouting out of her ears, she sat up straight, as if perplexed by the sensation. She didn’t seem to mind it too much, but Dorian bounced her gently on his knee and spoke softly to her. “Does that feel silly, pumpkin?” He kissed the top of her head as he turned the toddler back toward him and stood up from his seat. Cradling Ariel against his chest, the top of her head tucked snugly under Dorian’s chiseled chin, Dorian reached for the white bag being offered to him. “Thank you, Healer Fenwick. I appreciate you taking the time to look Ariel over.” The steam was slowing now, thinning. Shuffling Ariel and the bagged medicine, Dorian freed his right hand and extended it to the woman. He was grateful that she was able to ease his mind a bit, and that she’d been so patient with Ariel even though the tot wasn’t behaving her best. She wasn’t awful by any means, but she certainly wasn’t her cheery, bubbly self.

Immy stretched out her hand and shook Agent Humbert's. It was her job to help sick people and she didn't need the thanks at all but it was nice to receive it, not everyone was so generous with their thanks these days, as though they were holding back in case they'd need to thank someone a million times over sometime in the near future. "Hope you're feeling better, Ariel." She said with a smile, "Goodbye, sweetheart." She gave a nod to Agent Humbert and the a last smile to the little toddler that would perk up in no time and want to pull her daddy all over the place. There was plenty of time to be making up for, Immy on the other hand has a couple more patients to check on and a few new ones to assess. Her shift was only just beginning but it was sure to be as busy as it always was.
Having exited the room Immy made her way to the Healer's station and switched over the files. She opened up the new file and had a read with a sigh. Honestly, what was peoples obsessions with placing things up their arse? "Shirelle, he should be down in artefacts." She said, holding the file out for the other Healer who just shook her head and then quirked it in the direction of the file, urging Immy to keep reading. Knowing it wasn't going to anything pleasant, Immy prepared herself for the worst and opened the file back up again. Her eyes scanned to where she'd been before and she kept reading the initial report. If she'd been in the staff room she would have sighed or made some kind of noise to signal her displeasure. Immy looked up from the file and looked to Shirelle, "I suppose I'll go introduce myself then." She put on a smile that really didn't want to be there, "And get someone from Artefacts up to deal with the aircraft please." She said, closing the file and heading to her new patient's room.
