I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
This was to be their first Christmas as a real little family. No more sadness. No more isolation. No more tears. Lucius and Narcissa had made it through the nightmare that had been their journey toward parenthood, and they had come out the other side with a perfect little boy. Narcissa wanted to celebrate the momentous occasion with a plethora of the most perfect gifts wrapped elegantly under a large, festive tree. They would have their portrait done in front of that tree so that they would always remember their first Christmas together. It was going to be splendid.
Every year prior, Narcissa had managed to finish her Christmas shopping early in December with enough time to relax for all the merriment the season had to offer. With little Draco taking up so much of Cissa’s attention, the new mum was rather far behind in checking off her shopping list. Packing up a nappy bag and dressing the blond bubby in a darling little outfit, Cissa and Draco set out for Diagon Alley to take care of a few gift-giving errands while Lucius was away for the day. “Daddy is going to love his gifts, my little darling. You are such a brilliant little shopper.” Narcissa leaned forward over the handle of Draco’s pram, softly complimenting the infant for his part in their busy day. She tapped her pointer finger gently on the baby’s nose. Draco laughed and smiled, wriggling his arms and legs happily at his mother’s action.
Right now, several bags of shopping were being delivered to Malfoy Manor. Draco had bought his father a gold watch, engraved with a message to “the best daddy in all the world”. A pair of ivory collar stays and matching cufflinks meant to match the new suit Narcissa had ordered from Luci’s tailor. White gold pocket watch and a dainty silver locket, both with photographs of baby Draco, perfect for the Blacks to celebrate their newest – and most adorable – grandchild. There were a few more names left on her list, but Cissa’s feet were beginning to ache and Draco was growing fussy. It was the perfect time to stop for a little treat, and Almathea’s had a wonderful cheesecake that would add a lovely touch to the perfect day she and Draco were having. The pair were sat at a table in the center of the dining room, affording all the other lucky customers the opportunity to see the most perfect little bubby in the world. Narcissa was happy to show off her little man as she waited patiently for the waitress to bring her cheesecake.

Christmas this year was going to be tough. Drommie was living paycheck to paycheck, trying to keep her head above water. Ted was off on the run and she'd not heard from him in over a month. Was he even still alive? Drommie had to tell herself he was, that it was just too hard and too dangerous to get in contact right now. He'd make himself known soon enough and in the meantime, she and Nymphadora had to carry on as normal and that meant Christmas shopping, even if she didn't much feel like celebrating the festive season this year.
Most of their Christmas shopping was done in charity shops. Thankfully they didn't have a lot of people to buy for. Ted's parents were gone and her own parents had disowned her. She got a little something for Sirius, not that she saw him all that often, but at least they were on good terms and she wanted to keep it that way. She'd lost nearly all her friends from school when she'd run off with Ted so she didn't have to buy for any of those snobby cows - thank Merlin. Bella was dead, she didn't know he niece and Narcissa didn't talk to her. No one had even told Drommie about little Draco, she found out from a birth announcement in the Daily Prophet. Still she had sent congratulations to her sister in the worm of a 'congratulations' card, just as she had done when she'd found out from a mutual friend about Aurora, but she had to be seven now, same age as Nymphadora. Merlin it was scary to think those two would be at school together.
Life was plodding along but Drommie felt as though she was going backwards, or somehow kind of adjacent to everyone else. They all seemed to be making progress with their lives - apart from Bella - but she'd lost Ted and yet things were still sort of carrying on. Her world was wrong without her husband by her side. She respected his decision, he had to stand up for himself and others just like him, but damn she missed him. To try and take her mind off of him she decided to take Nymphadora out for a little lunch. It wasn't something she could afford to do often but they were having a girly shopping day and Drommie wanted to make it memorable for her daughter so they stopped by the Amalthea's. They could have lunch, grab some desert and maybe even have a hot chocolate each. "Mum! Mum!" Nymphadora said, tugging at Drommie's coat, "Look! It's a baby!" Drommie, who had been talking to a waitress, turned to Nymphadora, to tell her to stay by her side rather than following her impulsive nature, but it was too late, her darling daughter of seven years old, almost eight, was off as quick as a flash, to look at the baby.
"Wow!" She said, looking at the little blonde baby in its pram, "You sure do got a pretty baby, miss!" Nymphadora said to the mum before she looked at the baby and started pulling faces, meanwhile Drommie looked at the woman the baby was with and felt her stomach drop. Just her luck. Drommie walked over to Nymphadora and placed her hand on her shoulder, Nymphadora now changing her hair to a shocking bright pink from its mousy brown, making it all short and spiky, knowing her mother didn't approve of her showing off her abilities in public, but also knowing Drommie wasn't going to tell her off in front of so many people. "Cissy." She said with a small nod, "Congratulations on little Draco." She said, smiling slightly although the last thing she felt like doing was smiling right now.

By now, Narcissa was used to people approaching her son and fawning over him. It wasn’t uncommon for an older witch to ask to hold him (which Cissa detested and complained regularly to Lucius about her feeling uncomfortable in declining a potentially harmless request), or offering him a sickle for being such a handsome chap despite his obvious age-appropriate obliviousness to the concept of money. Sometimes an older wizard might comment on how quiet Draco was in public but it was more rare to have a man coo over the babe the way women did. Children, though, both girls and boys, were not immune to the charms the littlest Malfoy flaunted effortlessly. They had already been stopped by an adorable little pair in a shoppe earlier that day, so when a young witch ran up excitedly to admire her little Draco, Cissa wasn’t surprised. “Handsome,” she corrected the child gently, who had complimented Draco by calling him pretty. Technically she was not incorrect, but as a boy Narcissa felt his manliness needed to be recognized and appreciated. The child’s hair turned a shocking color as if on command and Cissa’s eyes widened – Metamorphmagi were exceptionally rare. Draco squealed with delight and Narcissa was about to comment on the girl’s innate skill when another woman approached and placed her hand on the girl’s shoulder. Blue eyes took in the other mother quickly and Cissa’s posture stiffened, her lips pursing together in immediate annoyance. “Andromeda,” she greeted tersely. “This must be your…” Halfblood vermin. “…daughter.” Narcissa’s hand moved to Draco’s pram as if to rock it gently but she only pulled her darling son just slightly further from the muggleborn’s offspring.

It had been a good ten years or so since Drommie had seen her sister. Drommie had missed her family terribly, even Bella, but when they'd turned their backs on her, they'd made their choice and she'd made hers. Ted and Nymphadora were her family. It was a quiet and secluded life but it was better than being with people that despised her husband purely because his parents hadn't been magical like them. He was a man of honour, he was a man with integrity, which was a hell of a lot more than she could say for anyone from her old life. His honour and his integrity was what had him on the run now, hiding from the Ministry and its barbaric views on muggleborns. More than once their home had been searched from top to bottom, left a mess by morons that thought Ted would be home. She just claimed that he'd left her - which was true in a way - and eventually they left. It was a hard thing to explain to her daughter, but Nymphadora was a fighter if ever there was one, although her mouth was probably going to get her in trouble some day if she didn't control it.
Noticing Cissy pull the pram away from Nymphadora, Drommie rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Honestly, Narcissa, grow up, would you." She said in a tone she usually reserved for Nymphadora when she was being too rambunctious. "She's a child, what could possibly happen?" Nymphadora went comically stiff and stared from her mother to her estranged-aunt and then back to her mother, wondering if her mother was about to tell another grown up off in some random restaurant. Nymphadora was used to her mum yelling at her over the course of the day, especially with her dad gone, her mum seemed more on edge than usual, however talking like that to someone Nymphadora perceived to be a stranger? Well that was just awkward and interesting!

Nose raising slightly into the air as Andromeda made a scene, Narcissa sat still, her hand on Draco’s pram, and waited for the dramatics to be over. Andromeda was always so unrefined; boorishly rolling her eyes so exaggeratedly that it no doubt would catch the eye of the patrons at the back of the restaurant. “What could happen, Andromeda? Merlin only knows what sort of manners you’ve imposed on your family.” The hint of a sneer could be detected as she said the word ‘family’. What Andromeda had was hardly a real family. Calling it that demeaned what she and Lucius had together, what every other proper pureblood family had. If there were any other word for it that she could have used in public, she would have, but alas the only civil thing was to pretend Andromeda’s disgusting betrayal was legitimate. A quick glance around the immediate area of the restaurant showed no signs of Andromeda’s muggleborn husband. That was for the best, although she didn't like the idea that he might be lurking somewhere in the shadows nearby, either. “Where is your husband? One would think you’d be glued to his hip after abandoning your real family for this… lifestyle.”

Honestly, what the hell did Narcissa expect a kid to do? It infuriated Andromeda that Narcissa was such a stuck up cow. How the hell had she managed to escape such a messed up family? And Sirius too. Considering how the pair of them were raised, it was an outright surprise that two of them had seen the complete dragon dung their family spouted at them. Narcissa was never exactly dim, but she was certainly compliant. As much as Andromeda sometimes missed her family, Narcissa was making it easy for Drommie to see that she was better off without their hateful views. Had she been anyone else, Drommie would have poured a good amount of ice water all over Narcissa's head, but the fact they were family and had once been close afforded Narcissa some minor level of respect, if wanting to just kick her sister rather than actually doing it was considered some degree of respect. "How incredibly intrusive you are, or perhaps jealous." She said, her voice venomous. Knowing Narcissa, she wanted nothing but to humiliate Ted over some neon yellow arm band all muggleborns were supposed to wear. Well Ted was not one of those people and his whereabouts was none of Narcissa's business, not that Andromeda knew where her husband was. "He and Nymphadora are my real family," She said, lifting her head, proud of her family, "But then I wouldn't expect you to understand. Sold off to the highest bidder, incapable of thinking for yourself." Drommie looked to the little baby, "And continuing the pernicious cycle."

Jealous? What a laughable thought. If either of them had any right to be jealous it was Andromeda over Narcissa. Cissa had married a handsome, brilliant, and loyal man of respectable standing, and she’d done it for love. Andy had run off with the first muggleborn she could find, just to spite her family for some imagined slight. She had taken the teenage rebellion phase too far and was stuck in it now, but if she would only renounce her absent husband, she might be able to salvage what was left of her reputation and her relationships. Even her daughter could have a better life; a halfblood was looked upon more kindly than a muggleborn, and she was a Black, even if not by name but by blood. She might have offered Andromeda an olive branch, if not for the insults she hurled indirectly at Narcissa’s family. “Think what you will,” Narcissa replied, nose in the air as she slowly rocked Draco back and forth in his pram. “You were always so good at twisting the truth to make it fit your warped little worldview, I can hardly expect you to change now.”

Drommie smirked and folded her arms, her right foot out to the side a little, tapping on the floor. "That's right, Cissy." She said, not giving a single shit that a lot of people in the restaurant were now looking their way. "Turn it all on me. Thought I was supposed to be the one that was good at twisting the truth, though let's face it," She gave a condescending chuckle, "You wouldn't know the truth if it gave you a well deserved slap across the face." Well screw this mess, Drommie wasn't going to stand around, arguing with her sister in front of Nymphadora. "Come on, Dora." She said, reaching her hand out to her daughter, "We can find somewhere better to eat." Her daughter groaned but gave a cheery wave to the baby and then poked her tongue out at Cissy as Drommie pulled her out of the restaurant. Usually Drommie would have scolded her but she couldn't have been more proud of her daughter at the moment.
