I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
"Have a good night, my love, I'll see you in the morning." Lucius pulled her in for a passionate kiss before leaving for the evening. Cissa knew better than to ask where he was going, or more precisely what he was going to be doing. So long as he was careful and returned home to her, she would save her questions. Lucius had his business to attend to, and Cissa had their son. She would worry in silence as a good wife did, and turned to head back into the nursery to check on little Draco. He was a year now, and his sleeping habits had regressed; she never knew when he would be asleep for any substantial amount of time, but she was always hopeful. “Quiet now, my sweet prince.” Draco was standing in his cot, holding the railing for support as he wailed over his mother’s momentary absence. She stretched out her arms to him as she crossed the large room, whispering soothing words to the babe. Upon reaching him, Narcissa lifted the child out of his crib and held him against her, gently bouncing up and down and shushing him sweetly. Draco settled almost instantly in his mother’s arms. Narcissa kissed his blond head and made her way to the rocking chair which sat near a decorative shelf with Cissa’s favorite children’s books. Her little love would be naturally genius, but it never hurt to give his growing mind a little help with a story or two. “What shall we read tonight, my love?” Her eyes scanned the spins of the thin tales and settled upon the one she somehow always leaned to when Lucius was away working for the Dark Lord. “The Noble Knight,” she said softly, as if agreeing to a suggestion made by Draco who was too busy pawing at the collar of her nightdress and focused more on supper than a silly children’s story about a knight who slayed an evil dragon. Cissa sat there, rocking absentmindedly as she read in a slow, melodic voice as Draco suckled himself back to sleep.
She was in for a quiet evening at home without her husband present, but her mind was full of worry long after she had returned Draco to his cot and gently shut the door as she left him for what she hoped would be the night. Cissa pondered having a glass of wine but instead she turned to her painting, sitting in a room lit to reflect the mid-day sun despite the clouded moon outside the window. She had bemoaned to Lucius once, years ago, that sunlight was the best lighting to work by but too inconsistent for her busy schedule. He found a solution for her with apparent ease, as he did with just about any request she had for him. Narcissa knew how fortunate she was to have such a doting, faithful husband who loved her. It was rare in their world and it made her all the more special, but the dark thoughts came regardless of the truth and putting paint to canvas eased the loneliness just a bit.

Cissa let out a light laugh as Ophelia reminded her of Keven Pyke and his brick-like feet on the dance floor when they were younger. Merlin, it seemed like forever ago but after as many hard years as Narcissa and Lucius had had, Cissa was feeling older than she really was. The emotional drain of repeated miscarriages and lost dreams had taken a toll on her internally, but externally she was as resilient as ever. Anyone unaware of the troubles the Malfoys had experienced would have no reason to think that Cissa had ever had a trying day in her life.
The waiter came and asked for their orders, so Cissa held her tongue on her thoughts of young Pyke. There would be plenty of time to reminisce when they were alone – or as alone as a crowded restaurant could afford the pair. “I’ll have a strawberry salad, dressing on the side. And Draco will have a bowl of fresh peaches.” She looked at the waiter sternly. “Fresh ones. I’ll know if you’re trying to pawn off canned ones to my little prince.” She gave a tight smile before looking back as Lia.

"We’ll be starting dancing lessons just as soon as he can walk,” she said facetiously. “I won’t have my boy be one of those poor sods who had to learn from the Head of House before their first school ball.” Cissa rolled her eyes playfully, remembering the fair few boys in their year who spent the weeks up to their first Yule Ball practicing stiff dance steps in the courtyards of Hogwarts.

"Well, Felix is still single...” Cissa added with a little giggle. Marriages between third cousins were not uncommon, especially if you were limiting your options to families within the Sacred 28, but marrying your first cousin was simply barbaric. Who would even suggest such a thing?!
Draco gave a little whimper, having had the spotlight removed from him for longer than his liking, and Cissa turned her full attention to her child, offering him a spoon to play with and telling him what a “charming little boo” he was.

Her drink arrived and Cissa gave the waitress a small smile as thanks before carrying on with her conversation uninterrupted. “Off the top of my head, I’d have to say...There’s Desmond Sage. He just got back from business in Tokyo…or he’s just left. I can’t recall.” It was hard to keep track of Desmond, his business took him everywhere and anywhere. Though maybe that life would be a bit much for Lia. ”I believe both of the Zabini men are still available,” she offered as an added bonus. Either Leo or Lex would have been a fine choice, as both were physically dashing and wealthy enough to keep her friend happy. “I’ll have a chat with Lucius later and see who he thinks might be a nice fit. We’ll do a double date.” Cissa felt confident enough in the planning stages, but come time to actually leave little Draco alone with the nanny, she wasn’t sure she would actually be able to do it.

“Some of them are,” she mused, “but there are the rare hidden gems just waiting for the right witch to come along.” A few of his mates were even going through a divorce or were separated from their wives, but Lia didn’t need to deal with any of that. Soiled goods were no good at all, and Narcissa wouldn’t dream of setting her friend up with someone who had already proven an inability to make a marriage work. Marriage was hard work, as Cissa and Lucius knew all too well, but she hid the pains with a glamourous smile and focused her efforts on ensuring their son never felt even an inkling of the sorrow his parents had known before his arrival.

Draco was known around the manor to cause a fuss every now and again while going through this rough patch of getting his first teeth, but overall he handled it with the grace and poise of his mummy, and with the strength of his handsome father. And when genetics alone wouldn't suffice, a teething ring coated with a pain-relief potion often did the trick. "He's a very brave lad. Not one to wimper over a little pain, are we, my love?" Narcissa stroked his arm and adjusted his little cap dotingly.
The friends' conversation was interupted by the waitress who asked after Cissa's drink order. "A Riesling, please." Cissa waited a moment until they were alone again to continue her conversation with Lia. "Lucius is splendid, of course. He's taken to being a daddy like a fish to water. And his business is going well," though Narcissa knew considerably little about what Lucius actually got up to at work. Their Gringott's vault was never without, and never at risk of becoming so as far as Narcissa could tell, so there was no reason for her to question her husband about his dealings. There were a great many things Cissa kept herself out of, choosing instead to focus on their family and ensuring that her husband was well satisfied at home. "You know, Lucius has a few single mates I know would just die at the chance to take you out. You ought to let me set you up, I hate the thought of you living in that big flat all by yourself."

Draco greeted his mummy’s friend like a charming little prince, and Cissa was practically glowing watching the interaction as Lia shook his little hand. He hadn’t fussed or pulled away or anything, an absolute gentleman. “This one makes it look easy,” she said of Draco and of motherhood. “He’s been sleeping through the night for some time now, and he hardly ever cries.” Though the fact that Narcissa gives in to nearly every whim the infant had, was mostly the cause for that. She anticipated his needs and fawned over his schedule so that she could easily predict when he was going to need a nappy change or when he was getting hungry. She rarely ever left him alone long enough for him to get bored or to get into any sort of mischief, but even if she had she couldn’t fathom her little angel doing anything one might view as naughty. “I know every mother says it, but Draco is actually a little angel.” Cissa beamed at her little love, who was sucking on the sleeve of his shirt and beginning to drool. “He’s getting another tooth,” she explained adoringly, looking through her tiny handbag which had been enchanted so that it could double as a nappy bag without all the fuss until she found his chewing ring. “Here, lovey.” Cissa swapped out his shirt sleeve for his ring and Draco hardly seemed to notice or care in the slightest.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Their dark period had ended more than a year ago and while Narcissa still struggled with the weight of their losses, there were many more good days than bad. Cissa excelled at being a mum. It was something she had always known she had wanted and for the longest time she feared it would never happen for her. In Draco’s first few months there were moments when Narcissa wondered if all of their challenges had perhaps been the fates telling her not to bother, pleading with her to understand that she was not cut out for this life that she had desperately wanted. The dark clouds above her head cleared soon after and she had been eager to show off her perfect little creation, a gorgeous perfect blend of Lucius and herself. She had taken to writing newsletters each month, celebrating their family’s little triumphs; boasting about Draco’s first solid foods, his sleeping schedule, and the fact that he had begun cruising around Malfoy Manor as if he would be walking any day now. Draco was exceptional in all things, as far as Narcissa was concerned, and she would be hard pressed to miss an opportunity to show off her handsome little prince, so when an invitation for lunch came her way, Narcissa began planning their outfits immediately.
The Ambrosia Lounge was not the place Cissa would have chosen for hersef and Draco, but she could appreciate that Ophelia was trying her best by clarifying that they would sit on the restaurant side of the establishment instead of the bar. The hostess greeted her and cooed at little Draco before escorting them to their table where Lia had already been seated. “Someone was eager to see us,” she with a haughty smirk as she noted Lia’s earliness before leaning in to give her a quick peck on the cheek. “But who am I to fault you for wanting more time with this little one.” Narcissa carefully placed Draco in the highchair between where Lia was sitting and where she would soon seat herself. “How are you, darling? I feel as though it’s been ages.”

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Draco was nearing his first birthday and Narcissa was already well into party planning, despite being a few months away. It was a tremendous achievement to have their son with them after all the heartache and troubles they’d gone through to have him. And he was absolutely perfect. Pale gold hair just like his father’s. Piercing eyes like his mother’s. And spoiled to absolute perfection just as he ought to be. Cissa was so incredibly enamored with her boy, she simply couldn’t help it. His birthday celebration would be the talk of high society for years to come, but this weekend they were pressing pause on the party planning in favor of a few Easter celebrations. Narcissa was hosting a lavish luncheon tomorrow to commemorate Draco’s first Easter, but today they were going out to an event. Well, she and Draco were going, while Lucius had work to attend to, but so long as he was present at tomorrow's affair, Cissa hardly minded that he wasn't accompanying her to the book event. She’d read about it in the Daily Prophet; a children’s book event with a fairy theme. It sounded darling and although Draco didn’t seem to care much for books yet, Narcissa thought he would have a good time.
Dressed in a darling little sprite outfit, Draco was sure to be the talk of the town. Narcissa carried him through the bookshop proudly, her chin raised ever so slightly as they stepped out into the patio which was full of other parents chatty away while their wild children ran amok. “Look at that, my love. Isn't it darling?” Narcissa repositioned Draco so that he could look at the festive decorations that hung around them. Instead of sitting straight away, Cissa and Draco strolled leisurely through the crowd, stopping to let Draco grab play with things here and there.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Jealous? What a laughable thought. If either of them had any right to be jealous it was Andromeda over Narcissa. Cissa had married a handsome, brilliant, and loyal man of respectable standing, and she’d done it for love. Andy had run off with the first muggleborn she could find, just to spite her family for some imagined slight. She had taken the teenage rebellion phase too far and was stuck in it now, but if she would only renounce her absent husband, she might be able to salvage what was left of her reputation and her relationships. Even her daughter could have a better life; a halfblood was looked upon more kindly than a muggleborn, and she was a Black, even if not by name but by blood. She might have offered Andromeda an olive branch, if not for the insults she hurled indirectly at Narcissa’s family. “Think what you will,” Narcissa replied, nose in the air as she slowly rocked Draco back and forth in his pram. “You were always so good at twisting the truth to make it fit your warped little worldview, I can hardly expect you to change now.”

Nose raising slightly into the air as Andromeda made a scene, Narcissa sat still, her hand on Draco’s pram, and waited for the dramatics to be over. Andromeda was always so unrefined; boorishly rolling her eyes so exaggeratedly that it no doubt would catch the eye of the patrons at the back of the restaurant. “What could happen, Andromeda? Merlin only knows what sort of manners you’ve imposed on your family.” The hint of a sneer could be detected as she said the word ‘family’. What Andromeda had was hardly a real family. Calling it that demeaned what she and Lucius had together, what every other proper pureblood family had. If there were any other word for it that she could have used in public, she would have, but alas the only civil thing was to pretend Andromeda’s disgusting betrayal was legitimate. A quick glance around the immediate area of the restaurant showed no signs of Andromeda’s muggleborn husband. That was for the best, although she didn't like the idea that he might be lurking somewhere in the shadows nearby, either. “Where is your husband? One would think you’d be glued to his hip after abandoning your real family for this… lifestyle.”

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
By now, Narcissa was used to people approaching her son and fawning over him. It wasn’t uncommon for an older witch to ask to hold him (which Cissa detested and complained regularly to Lucius about her feeling uncomfortable in declining a potentially harmless request), or offering him a sickle for being such a handsome chap despite his obvious age-appropriate obliviousness to the concept of money. Sometimes an older wizard might comment on how quiet Draco was in public but it was more rare to have a man coo over the babe the way women did. Children, though, both girls and boys, were not immune to the charms the littlest Malfoy flaunted effortlessly. They had already been stopped by an adorable little pair in a shoppe earlier that day, so when a young witch ran up excitedly to admire her little Draco, Cissa wasn’t surprised. “Handsome,” she corrected the child gently, who had complimented Draco by calling him pretty. Technically she was not incorrect, but as a boy Narcissa felt his manliness needed to be recognized and appreciated. The child’s hair turned a shocking color as if on command and Cissa’s eyes widened – Metamorphmagi were exceptionally rare. Draco squealed with delight and Narcissa was about to comment on the girl’s innate skill when another woman approached and placed her hand on the girl’s shoulder. Blue eyes took in the other mother quickly and Cissa’s posture stiffened, her lips pursing together in immediate annoyance. “Andromeda,” she greeted tersely. “This must be your…” Halfblood vermin. “…daughter.” Narcissa’s hand moved to Draco’s pram as if to rock it gently but she only pulled her darling son just slightly further from the muggleborn’s offspring.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
This was to be their first Christmas as a real little family. No more sadness. No more isolation. No more tears. Lucius and Narcissa had made it through the nightmare that had been their journey toward parenthood, and they had come out the other side with a perfect little boy. Narcissa wanted to celebrate the momentous occasion with a plethora of the most perfect gifts wrapped elegantly under a large, festive tree. They would have their portrait done in front of that tree so that they would always remember their first Christmas together. It was going to be splendid.
Every year prior, Narcissa had managed to finish her Christmas shopping early in December with enough time to relax for all the merriment the season had to offer. With little Draco taking up so much of Cissa’s attention, the new mum was rather far behind in checking off her shopping list. Packing up a nappy bag and dressing the blond bubby in a darling little outfit, Cissa and Draco set out for Diagon Alley to take care of a few gift-giving errands while Lucius was away for the day. “Daddy is going to love his gifts, my little darling. You are such a brilliant little shopper.” Narcissa leaned forward over the handle of Draco’s pram, softly complimenting the infant for his part in their busy day. She tapped her pointer finger gently on the baby’s nose. Draco laughed and smiled, wriggling his arms and legs happily at his mother’s action.
Right now, several bags of shopping were being delivered to Malfoy Manor. Draco had bought his father a gold watch, engraved with a message to “the best daddy in all the world”. A pair of ivory collar stays and matching cufflinks meant to match the new suit Narcissa had ordered from Luci’s tailor. White gold pocket watch and a dainty silver locket, both with photographs of baby Draco, perfect for the Blacks to celebrate their newest – and most adorable – grandchild. There were a few more names left on her list, but Cissa’s feet were beginning to ache and Draco was growing fussy. It was the perfect time to stop for a little treat, and Almathea’s had a wonderful cheesecake that would add a lovely touch to the perfect day she and Draco were having. The pair were sat at a table in the center of the dining room, affording all the other lucky customers the opportunity to see the most perfect little bubby in the world. Narcissa was happy to show off her little man as she waited patiently for the waitress to bring her cheesecake.

A picture of little Aurora plucking roses by the stem, roots still attached and covered in soil, and throwing them about Rabastan’s pristine living room began to blossom in Narcissa’s mind. She chuckled lightly. “I can only imagine.” Her niece was, without question, adorable but Narcissa had not spent as much time with the child as she ought to have. The struggles with her repeated failed pregnancies had jaded Narcissa and she found a visit from her niece, whom the child’s own mother didn’t even seem to really care for, was simply too much for her. Aurora was a painful reminder of Narcissa’s cursed luck, and she found it cruel that Merlin had chosen to bless Bellatrix of all witches with a child while Narcissa should be practically barren. Bella had never wanted children. She had never desired to be a mother like Narcissa had, and she seemed content to only have a single child when clearly her body was capable of bringing a child safely into the world. The eldest of the Black sisters had never even really seemed phased by Narcissa’s repeated traumas, though she wasn’t harsh about it, just indifferent. That was simply Bella’s way, but despite knowing her sister did care for her deep down, Narcissa still felt Aurora’s presence to be a slap in the face. How shameful for a grown woman to view a child that way. With Bella gone, it seemed more important than ever that Narcissa make more of an effort where the child was concerned. Clearly Rabastan and his bride-to-be were not opposed to allowing the child be a part of their life, and Aurora ought to know something of her mother’s family.
