For far too many Sunday's now Dorcas had found she was pulled away to work, or dead for one particular weekend and she hadn't felt much like socialising with her family that weekend, not that she'd been dead the whole weekend, just a little bit of the Friday night but it hadn't left her up to socialising much, claiming she was working on a case and couldn't get away from it. Her parents wouldn't have known any better but Dorian possibly would have, thankfully she had worked the weekend before, missing Sunday with her family and Dorian but she'd been there, a little later but there, the following Sunday. She'd left early but she was fairly certain she'd pulled it off well enough not to rouse suspicions. The following weekend she'd been working, actually working so she was able to get away with that one too but it was a little empty not seeing her family as much as she was used to. The anniversary of Paris' death was coming up and she suspected it was at the front of everyone's minds, even if they didn't say anything, but life had to keep moving forward.
After the slight mishap with Rodolphus where she'd died and she'd accidentally confessed she'd had an abortion, she returned to work as normal but losing her life just a little did give her the sobering realisation that there would be people that would miss her when she was gone and while there was nothing she could do to stop that entirely, she figured that perhaps a little distance for a while would help her get her head around what was going on. Of course as well as dodging family meals or nipping out early there had been the Minister's gala that she'd talked Dorian in to attending with her when those strange little invites had been sent out so she couldn't pass up the opportunity to snoop at the woman's home. As it turned out the paranoid bitch wasn't much of a threat as far as Dorcas could see, she did, however, fear a lot of people, or rather what they might know about her or could do to her. Dorcas wasn't interested in that kind of thing, she was more interested in where the Minister's loyalties rested in the present climate but it seemed she was nothing to worry about, she was just a power hungry grub that Dorcas would continue to keep an eye on regardless.
Having missed four of the previous six family Sunday lunches and ducking out early on one, Dorcas had found there was one little face in particular she had been missing and she fully intended on spending the weekend with the little cherub. Not that Dorcas liked babies or anything like that, but Ariel was special, she was unique, she was a great kid with a hell of a lot of potential, that was if she stopped sucking on her fist for longer than five seconds, but Dorcas figured it was a comfort while she observed the world and learnt about it in silence. Oh bugger, she was going to be a Ravenclaw like Dorian. Hopefully by the time she attended Hogwarts she'd stop sucking on her fist. If not that would be one hell of a rough first year with all the teasing she'd endure, but Dorcas was willing to kick anyone's arse that said anything negative towards the little blonde angel, she'd threaten eleven year olds with Azkaban if she sodding well had to. No one was picking on Ariel while Dorcas was still around, and she'd gotten herself back to her usual mindset of thinking she was invincible, all that nonsense that she might die permanently was exactly that - nonsense.
Stopping outside Dorian's apartment, Dorcas already had the key in her hand. She knocked, as was only polite, and then she proceeded to trash that politeness by sliding the key into the lock and letting herself on in to Dorian's tiny little apartment. The did was a single dad, he needed more space than a one room shoebox. 'Shoebox'? Oh bugger, that was Rodolphus' influence there and she cringed a little. "Hey, hope you don't mind me dropping in." She called out, slipping the key out of the lock and shitting the door behind her, sealing the protections that kept the apartment safe. Of course he'd mind her randomly dropping in but he really should have been at least a little used to it by now. She'd been doing it for a while now so as she slipped her keys into her black pouch bag it felt similar to turning up to her parents house, it was just another home away from home, even if Dorian didn't much fancy her treating his home as such.

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Dorian found himself in a repetitious cycle of work, playing dad, and having Sunday lunch with the Meadowes. Nearly every week was the same thing. The long-distance missions for the Ministry were becoming fewer and farther between as the mysterious Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters made their attacks more frequent. There was clearly a pattern to the violence but every once in a while there would be an outlier than perplexed the investigating agents. It was clear to see that this dark wizard had a plan, and more than likely some men inside the Ministry of Magic to aid in his nefarious plots. But Dorian had a little angel to see to, and he had gotten in the habit of staying only an hour or two past his shift before going home, as opposed to the several hours he had once remained late at work to avoid the empty chasm that was his social life.
Ariel was more than enough for Dorian’s social life, but she came with all sorts of added people; some blessings and others remained to be seen. He enjoyed Sunday lunch the Andre and Emily, who spent a large portion of the meal cooing over little Ariel as if she were their own granddaughter. Dorcas’ attendance had been infrequent as of late, but it was to be expected with the added work in the Auror Department. She was single and childless, and a clear target for being handed additional cases. Dorian was once that target, and he still insisted on taking on more than his fair share, but while he had no children of his own he was a father of sorts to his orphaned niece and her welfare and happiness was taken into consideration.
Weekends were not necessarily a day off for the Auror, but this particular Saturday just so happened to be. Ariel had slept in until nearly seven this morning, affording Dorian some time to read in peace before she awoke. After that they had breakfast and then went up to his rooftop garden where Ariel crawled around the patio trying to stick leaves in her mouth as Dorian did a bit of gardening. The little munchkin was not yet a skilled crawler, requiring little breaks every so often to rest her arms and legs from the spasm-like movements that propelled her forward. Ever the concerned parent, Dorian put up a play pin to keep from getting too far but she had yet to make it all the way from one side to the other without getting distracted by something or another.
“Look at you, young lady. That’s not for eating.” Dorian picked up the babe, who had grown longer and more child-like in the last few months, and pulled a leaf from her mouth. He bounced her on his hip as he wiped away a speck of dirt from her nose. She would need more that a little wipe to clean her up. Gardening always made her a mess, which meant Dorian was already planning a late morning bath. “This is why we garden in the morning, before your bath.” He pressed his lips to the top of her head and carried her inside.
There was no such thing a quick bath with Ariel. She loved the water and would splash and squeal every time a droplet fell on her face. She found it even more humorous to get her uncle sopping wet. The front door opening could be heard from the bathroom and then Dorcas’ voice rang out. “Looks like we’ve got a visitor, little Miss. That means bath time is all done.” Dorian lifted Ariel from her bathing seat in the tub and wrapped her in a yellow towel covered with green ducks. He was wet, the undershirt he’d been wearing while gardening and bathing his niece had large patches of water soaked through, and his trousers still had a bit of potting soil on them from where Dorian had wiped his hands.
Towel-wrapped baby on his hip, Dorian poked his head out into the front room and gave Dorcas a warm smile. “Hello, Dorcas. We’ll be right out. Make yourself at home.” He knew she would anyway, so there was no reason not to formally invite her to do so. At least this way Dorian could feign some manner of control in his own home.

There were a few sounds coming from the bathroom and Dorcas made her way in to the apartment. Dorian's head popped out of the bathroom as Dorcas settled her bag down on the table. "No rush." She said, looking about. Dorcas didn't really have a hard time keeping her place tidy, it was just her alone most days and whenever things needed doing that she couldn't be arsed then she lifted the little charm she had in place that kept Rodolphus' house elf out and then let the little beast get on with cleaning her house from top to bottom until it sparkled. It wasn't very often she took advantage of the house elf, only whens he was expecting pre-planned company, the rest of the time her mum usually helped out, a bit of light dusting and whatever else it was she did. Dorcas still didn't wash her own clothes, that came down to her mother, but Dorcas still saw it as a favour to her mum, the woman loved taking care of her and Dorcas didn't have time to learn to work a washing machine or any kind of scrubbing charms, she was busy catching bad guys, dying, and stealing babies.
Dorcas unzipped her jacket and pulled it off. Giving it a small shake to sort out the arms she looked about the tidy flat, wondering if her mother tidied Dorian's place and dusted much like she did with Dorcas' place. She probably did and then Dorian probably went over it all anyway, he seemed like the uptight kind that had to do it himself or he'd fret over it. Placing her jacket on the back of a chair Dorcas realised she didn't really have plans for Ariel. She figured some shopping, some lunch, some more shopping and back here for dinner. She probably wouldn't stick around for dinner, something Dorian would probably be grateful for, but she'd have Ariel back in time for snuggles with her daddy Dor, din-dins and time for her bedtime routine. Dorcas figured she might find her own way to a pub and find some company that wasn't Rodolphus for a change. Taking Ariel off Dorian's hands for a few hours might also give him some time to find a little adult company, but Dorcas highly doubted it, if anything he'd pace around his flat, attempting to find something to clean or tidy, worrying about what she was up to with Ariel.
Heading to the closet near the door, Dorcas suspected that Ariel's little bag full of nappies, wipes and whatever else a baby would need, would be all full and ready to go. There would of course be a few adjustments that needed to be made but not right now, just in the future. Dorcas wasn't a fan of some of the clothes Dorian dressed the little angel in but she was slowly going to start changing that today. Pulling open the closet door she decided she'd leave the bag as it was for now and get Ariel a few new things while they were out. She pulled the nappy bag out of the closet and set it on the table next to her own bag. She'd stumbled across a few places in London that did some rather adorable baby clothes and she fully intended on giving Ariel a little makeover while they were out. She highly doubted Dorian would approve but then he probably wouldn't approve of much that was beyond his control. Dorcas refused to let Ariel be raised as some kind of overly girly kind of girl. She needed bits that were less frilly and more black. Lots of black. Black was a good colour, though maybe not with baby spit-up. She'd had to throw out a fair few tops thanks to Ariel's vomiting all over them but she was sure the little darling wouldn't be in black for long. Dorian would have her changed into something far too feminine the second he saw her in anything other than flowers or white or pink or frills.

My promise to you always and forever
Dorcas was settling in as Dorian knew she would, and so he turned back around to finish up Ariel’s bath time routine. A fresh diaper and some powder were the first order of business, knowing from experience that allowing the little munchkin to crawl around bare bottomed was a recipe for disaster. Dorian set her in the middle of his bed and magicked the pillows to create a bumper barrier around her, giving the little girl enough room to move around without having easy access to the floor and a bruised head. Ariel had her own little area in the corner of Dorian’s room. She was quickly growing out of space, but the flat was only a single bedroom and there was no where else to put her. Dorian knew the time was coming and he would have to resign himself to finding somewhere else to live. Someplace big enough to raise his niece properly. She was an active little girl and she enjoyed being outdoors. The rooftop garden wouldn’t satisfy her for long. She needed a proper garden to play in, and her own bedroom.
Turning half way, Dorian pulled on the drawer of Ariel’s dresser, and pulled out an outfit for her to wear. It was not her first one of the day, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. Ariel went through more clothes per week than the contents of Dorian’s entire wardrobe, and the man owned a lot of suits. It would have been easy then for Dorian to give up on trying to make Ariel look presentable. Perhaps if she were his own child he would feel at ease to fall back on letting Ariel wear a simple onesie every day, but this was not his own daughter. She was River’s daughter, and while he had only known his sister for a short while, he knew that she would have put the utmost care and effort to ensuring her little angel was always presentable. Without the feminine eye for baby fashion that new mums seemed to instinctively have, Dorian tried his damnedest to make sure Ariel was cared for in a way that would make River and Bert proud. Today’s outfit, or this morning’s outfit to be more realistic, was a pale purple checked romper with lace on the bum and a white peter pan collar. A pair of matching purple socks were added to keep her feet warm as she crawled around the living room while he and Dorcas spoke about whatever it was she had come over to speak to him about.
Little Ariel in his arms again, her soft blonde curls framing her chubby angelic face, Dorian gave a sweep of his wand and sent his pillows back to the head of his bed in an orderly manner as the pair exited the bedroom. Dorcas was standing near the dining table, Ariel’s nappy bag having been pulled out of the cloak closet and the door still standing open. What was she up to? “Sorry about that. We were just finishing up a bath.” His gaze moved noticeably from Dorcas’ face to the nappy bag resting on the table. “Might I inquire as to your plans?” He sensed something coming that would surely make him on edge.

After fiddling about in the perfectly organised nappy bag for a bit, Dorcas looked up to see Dorian and Ariel entering the room. "Not a problem." She smiled, closing the nappy bag up, full intending on replacing all the spare clothes in there next time she was over, getting the baby girl something a bit more pleasing. Of course what was in the nappy bag was absolutely nothing compared to the horrors that Dorian had Ariel dressed in today. Dorcas was going to have to take pictures of that outfit. Purple checker was one thing, the whole fancy little collar was another and Dorcas couldn't help but want to destroy that little outfit somehow. Perhaps she'd accidentally 'lose' it while they were out and needing to change Ariel's clothes. Not that Ariel would make it that far. She wasn't leaving the building dressed in that. Dorcas had spied a pink and white little number in the bag, she'd change her into that before leaving. "Oh, you know," She said with a shrug, turning around and shutting the door to the cloak closet, "Just figured Ariel could do with a little girl time. Go shopping, have a play at the park, little lunch." It all sounded quite sweet and relatively straight forward. And it was. Dorcas had no intentions of complicating things.
"If you don't mind of course." She added on, walking back to the table and straightening out the small crease she'd left in the top of the nappy bag. She couldn't see Dorian minding. She pretty much demanded quite a lot of him and she was yet to be faced with a firm 'no' with regards to anything. She'd dragged him out to the Ministers spring gala thing a couple of weeks ago and he hadn't complained. Looking at the social side of their relationship Dorcas knew that as long as it was within some kind of reason, she could get pretty much whatever she wanted out of Dorian. Apart from sex. There seemed to be no way of breaking down that barrier and easing the bluest of balls known to man. Even at work she didn't really have to deal with him but any sort of 'no' from him there was more an 'err on the side of caution' than a straight up refusal. After all it wasn't like he was her boss or anything but she did value his opinion immensely. He was one of the best after all and well in need of a promotion to a position that actually mattered. Heading the Auror Trainee department or whatever he did, seemed like glorified baby sitting to Dorcas and although Dorian was passing on his knowledge, he was much better off sharing it with the whole department as head. Plus it would see him behind a desk a little more often which was a safer place for him now he was a dad and all.

My promise to you always and forever
He was a relatively smart man and knew that “girl time” meant that he wasn’t invited on this spontaneous outing. Dorian wasn’t sure how that knowledge made him feel. He certainly didn’t want to go round to the shops, and he was certain having lunch with Dorcas would have consisted of inappropriately eaten foods with excessive eye contact and suggestive topics of conversation. He would rather leave all that…elsewhere. Just always elsewhere. The idea of Dorcas on a day out with his eight month old niece without him made him a bit uneasy. He knew Dorcas loved the child, in her own way, and would never put her intentionally in harm’s way, but Dorcas was adamant that she disliked children and so Dorian didn’t really have much faith in her abilities to care for his orphaned niece for long stretches of time. Dorcas was a great impromptu sitter for short durations, like when Dorian needed to pop over to the barber for a haircut or when Ariel was asleep and he needed to run to the shop for some more milk and didn’t want to wake her. A whole girls day of shopping, park, and lunch?
“Is your mum planning to meet up with you?” he asked, trying to keep any hint of insinuation from his tone, and certainly trying to downplay the hopefulness in his voice. He loved Dorcas, in a familial manner, but if she ever had children of her own he was fairly certain Emily would be playing a big role in actually rearing her grandchildren. Emily was a wonderful grandmum to Ariel, just as Andre was a superb grandad, but Dorian – and Dorcas as well, knew that they hoped for grandchildren of their own someday. Dorian didn’t know which side to root for as the idea of Dorcas as a mum was rather unnerving. He adjusted Ariel on his hip as he awaited the answer.

Dorcas quirked a single eyebrow at Dorian as he enquired as to whether her mum was meeting up with him. Her look was probably more than enough of an answer to let him know that no, Emily Meadowes would not be meeting up with them and no, she did not appreciate being treated like some kid, but she decided to verbalise such thoughts in a way she was certain he would not appreciate. "No," She said innocently, "but if you feel like I need a parental figure to look after Ariel I'm more than willing to call you 'Daddy'." She said, her lips curling into a playful smirk as she caught the right side of her bottom lip with her teeth, looking across the room at Dorian knowing he wouldn't take her up on that offer but oh Merlin she'd enjoy getting beneath those layers if she could. A single hint that he was up for a little fun and she'd be all over him. Some, like Dorian himself, might think it entirely inappropriate for her to have such thoughts about the Auror that stood before her what with him having dated her now deceased cousin, but holy Merlin he was hot and that didn't bother her in the slightest.
Picking up the nappy bag and pulling it off the table, letting it drop against her hip as she stepped away, Dorcas made her way towards Dorian, reaching out her hands and taking Ariel from him. "I promise to have her back in one piece. We're just going to have a leisurely day, no dramas, just taking it easy." And that was the truth. Ariel meant the world to all of them, there wasn't a single person that didn't just adore the ever growing baby. It wasn't going to be long before she was turning one. She had no idea what Dorian was planning for Ariel's first birthday but it was about the only birthday, besides her own, that she could remember. To Dorcas birthdays just weren't all that big a deal and she always had her mum to remind her. It was a flawless system. "Come on, Fish Face," She said, pulling out her wand and giving it a wave, Ariel's pram coming out of its neat little spot and unfolding. "Let's go shopping." It would have been too easy to have made a comment to wind Dorian up some more so Dorcas left it and instead headed for the front door of the apartment, pulling it open and flicking her wand again so the pram made its way into the corridor.

My promise to you always and forever
Her words elicited a tense jaw and Dorian closed his eyes as he attempted to block out her sexual remark meant purely to displease him. Dorian longed for children one day, ones that, unlike Ariel, would call him daddy. He did not appreciate Dorcas using the nickname in such a provocative manner, even if he knew there was no chance of him having his own little family beyond loving and raising his niece. “That won’t be necessary,” he said shortly, running his tongue over his top teeth and looking away from the feisty brunette. Passing the babe over to the child-like adult, Dorian inhaled, his brow furrowing slightly. “Ring me straight away if you have any troubles,” he told her as he nervously watched Ariel in her pram heading toward the door. “Don’t be too long, she’ll need a nap in a few hours.” He wanted to shout a whole list of items at her but that would neither help the slight panic he felt in his stomach at having his niece leave him without the nurturing eyes of Emily or Andre to replace his own, nor would Dorcas bother to remember any of what he said. He let them go without much more fuss.
Dorian busied himself around the flat, checking the clock periodically and then methodically letting his eyes dash over to the front door in the hopes that it would open, and Dorcas and Ariel would return safe and sound. He knew Dorcas would never allow any harm to come to Ariel, but his nerves got the better of him and allowed him to think of every possible, horrible event that could overcome the pair while they were away from the watchful eyes of Ariel’s primary caregivers. If Dorian was this stressed over a bit of shopping, there was no telling what sort of a wreck he would be come time for Ariel to begin attending nursery school.

Shopping with Ariel was fun. People left right and centre wanted to come a coo over her delightfully chubby cheeks and her cute little dress. Dorcas got to tell a whole bunch of people to back the hell off and she couldn't have been happier. It wasn't that she was a complete bitch but she did rather enjoy just telling people to fuck off, even if it was in a nicer term than that. Why people felt entitled to come over and touch someone else's baby was something Dorcas couldn't understand. She'd even had to slap some old lady's hand away from squeezing Ariel's chubby little thigh. The old bag was lucky, if she'd been any younger she would have got a punch to the jaw. Had she been in the wizarding world instead of the muggle, she would have hexed them to kingdom come.
After a little shopping Dorcas grabbed some lunch and shared with Ariel, watching as the chubster smooshed the food on the table, smashing mashed potato all over the place, throwing softly cooked circles of carrot over the edge of the highchair she was in. Far more food got thrown about the little restaurant than what Ariel actually ate. After a quick wipe down she was ready for a change and play at the park. Dorcas actually enjoyed spending the one on one time with Ariel, telling her all kinds of stories and giving her instructions on how to get through life. She knew there was no chance the little eight month old would know what the hell she was on about, but Dorcas kept talking to her regardless.
After a little more shopping Dorcas noticed Ariel's brow turning red and she started heading back to Dorian's place. They'd been gone for probably longer than Dorian would have like but Dorcas didn't really care. Ariel was in good hands and whether he liked to admit it or not, Dorian would know that. Dorcas knew she wasn't great with kids, she never wanted any of her own, but having Ariel in her life felt like the closest thing she'd get to having a child of her own and as such Dorcas wanted to ensure she grew up properly.
With shopping bags stashed in under the pram, sitting in the little basket there, Dorcas let herself into Dorian's apartment as she so frequently did. She pushed Ariel on through first and then kicked the door shut behind her. "Daddy-Doooor, we're hooome." she called out through the flat, sticking the breaks on the pram and then getting Ariel out. She was in a different outfit than she'd started her day in but it was one from the nappy bag. Stuffed away in under the pram, however, was a bunch of new stuff for next time.

My promise to you always and forever
The usually spotless flat was cleaned from top to bottom, with all of Ariel’s toys being washed despite already having been sanitized. Dorian kept a tidy home even before Ariel came into his life, but he felt even more responsible for keeping Ariel’s things in perfect condition because her mum wasn’t here to fuss over her as she should have been. It was not a rare occasion when Dorian looked at little Ariel playing on a plush blanket on the floor and thoughts of River would spring to mind. Was this how she would have wanted her daughter raised? Were the clothes she was wearing to River’s liking? Did he go overboard with the fruits and vegetables? Would River have snuck her daughter a lolly from time to time or would she have been outraged that Dorian would even have considered that Ariel’s age? He hadn’t known his sister long enough to truly know what she would have wanted for her daughter, and it was this knowledge that kept him fretting about how long Ariel and Dorcas had been gone. He managed to shower and put on proper clothes, fix himself something to eat, and review a few documents from a case he’d been working on, but his focus was never fully captured. When he finally heard the latch on the door begin to turn Dorian felt an immense sense of relief rush over him.
His desk faced the wall opposite to the front door. It wasn’t a position the Auror would generally be found in, back to the entrance, but his home was warded with an almost insane number of security charms and was the one place he felt he could be a little more lax. Dorcas called out for him as she and Ariel strolled into the room. Dorian turned in his chair, looking to the child who looked exhausted and content. Closing the file marked with the Ministry of Magic’s seal on the front cover and disturbing crime scene photographs and various other documents within, Dorian left his workspace and crossed the small space to reach his niece. Plucking her from the pram, he brought her to his chest and stroked her hair. “Did you have fun with Auntie Dorcas?” he asked, knowing the girl couldn’t answer him. He turned his attention to Dorcas. “Was she any trouble?” He could very well have asked Ariel the exact same question.

Dorian had Ariel all snuggled up and looked over in no time. He was probably checking her up close for absolutely any little scrape, bump, or bruise that he could find but Dorcas wasn't totally careless, she knew how to look after a baby. Sort of. She was capable of looking after Ariel at least and of course the little angel hadn't been the slightest of trouble. The girl didn't even know the meaning of the word, something Dorcas was certainly going to have to change. She was far too sweet and innocent. River would probably be exceedingly proud but the baby needed a little sassy something. Was it too early to teach these sorts of things? Could you even teach those kinds of things? Dorcas had a feeling that you were either born with it or you weren't and right now Ariel didn't seem to be but she was still young. She had time to grow into it. If she was anything like her mother she'd be fantastic at throwing around a little cheeky attitude.
"As if you don't already know the answer to that one." She smirked a little, her eyes fixed on Ariel as she extended her hand to the little cherubs chubby cheeks and giving her right one a little jiggle. "Fed, played, and all shopped out." Dorcas said, Ariel grabbing at Dorcas' finger, causing the Auror to smile, "Nappy all fresh, butt all powdered, nose all booped." She grinned, pretending to pull her finger away from Ariel who had a pretty firm grip on it and was trying to shove it into her mouth. Yeah right. Dorcas had fallen for that cute little act before and been bitten. Those little gnashers were sharp! "I'll see you guys tomorrow!" She said, talking in a voice she most certainly did not use around many people, making herself more playful for Ariel, "Yes I will!" She kissed Ariel's chubby little cheek and reluctantly pulled her finger from the little one's grasp. "Bye Dor, by Fish-face." She turned about and grabbed her bag, sliding the strap over her shoulder and making her way out, leaving Dorian with the pram, nappy bag and shopping to sort through because she knew if she did any of it, he'd only consider it done wrong and re-arrange it all himself. Dorcas just felt it was easier to let him get on with it himself and besides, if she stayed any longer that was a decent chance she'd have gone down for a nap with Ariel. Being girly was exhausting.
