"Bah-da-da, bah-da-do. Scooby-do-baba. Bah-da-bah-bah bah-ba-da-doo. Bah-dada, bah-dada, bah-bah-bahdy-bah-bah!" André was happy with his little impromptu scat session as he twisted and danced across the floor of the kitchen, preparing lunch for the afternoon. He was the cook of the family and this year he'd even gone so far as to start his own veggie patch, keeping the growing situations as needed with magic for the best possible veggies possible! This winter so far was a brutal one and the thick layer of snow was of no help, although it did look beautiful and it was charming to have a white Christmas. He'd collected everything he'd need yesterday to make sure he'd have enough and he'd prepped it all this morning before his beautiful little princess and his elegant queen were up. He recalled the many christmases past he'd gone through in his life time. Many were missing but quite a few stood out. The ones from his own childhood that were rigid and proper. The ones as a young adult when he was out in the world on his own were lonely but freeing. The ones he had with Emily and her family when he'd started dating her had been the first he'd ever completely enjoyed. None of them compared to Christmas as a parent though. André knew he went overboard each and every year but Merlin help him he just couldn't stop himself, he just couldn't! He and Emily knew that Christmas wasn't the same as it used to be. The war outside of their home brought death and destruction and on such an important day like today so many people were missing their loved ones. André's heart ached for them, ached for their loss. This time of year was one of the most painful. All the firsts were. As a parent it was joy to experience a child's first everything. As a loved one in mourning it was tough to experience all the firsts. This was their first Christmas without Paris, he knew his wife was as open with her grief as he was but it was Dorcas he worried about. She seemed to have somehow developed the mentality that expressing any form of grief was weakness. The last time he'd seen her cry was when she was 6 and she'd accidentally fallen on her rabbit and crushed it. The little love had no hope of surviving and by the time Dorcas had strolled into the house, knees grazed and elbows bloody, it was too later for the rabbit laid dead on the garden path.
It wasn't just a first Christmas about loss though, there was also a little bundle of joy joining them along with her special adoptive daddy. Ariel and Dorian were welcome guests in their home any time of the year. Dorian had been going through one heck of a rough year that started with losing his girlfriend and ended up connecting with his estranged half-brother he'd never known before this year. He'd been on a rollercoaster of a ride. Dating Paris and losing her, finding his half-sister, her husband and losing them both, gaining his niece upon his half-sisters death only to have his half-brother come forward. It wasn't a great year for any of them but him most of all. He was handling everything surprisingly well from what André had taken note of. He didn't know the gentleman as well as Emily seemed to but they were both more than happy to welcome him into their family with open arms, to be the support he needed, whenever he needed. They were there for Ariel too and they wanted meet his half-brother, help support him through what must have been a difficult time. Losing a parent, a sister, a brother-in-law while finding your niece with another man you never knew and only shard a parents genes with and nothing more could not have been easy on the lad. Hopefully he would find some kind of comfort in the fact that River had seemed to adore the man that Dorian was and that Dorian realised just how much Julian had meant to River. It was going to be a rocky road for the pair but little Ariel needed both of her uncles in her life and for as much as they could, he and Emily would support them all in anyway they needed.
The meat was all cooking, the veggies were all in and Emily and Dorcas were off somewhere in the gardens. The pair were a couple of free spirits and he loved them both dearly. His family was his world and that extended to more than just his immediate family and he showed that in his cooking, or so he hoped. He liked a full house. Having grown up in a large and empty manor he loved his little cottage home, all cosy and everything you needed at your finger tips. It was warm and inviting and he wanted anyone that stepped foot into his home to feel safe and not just because of the wards that surrounded it. He wanted it to be a little haven, a place people could always turn to. It was important to him that his home was nothing like the one he'd grown up in. He didn't want that life for himself or for Dorcas, it was high demand and low happiness, very little of it had been about love or family and there had certainly never been any home cooked meals by either of his parents. While he loved his parents and they loved him in their own way, the home and their lives were absent of the precious emotion. Meeting Emily's family had been a completely different world to his own and he had never looked back wistfully. He had built a life for himself and his family the way that he had never known he'd wanted it. Peeping into the oven the heat escaped and André surveyed the food within. Not long now and people would start arriving.

Christmas!! It didn't matter how old she got Dorcas just loved Christmas! Every year she spent it with her parents, staying over at their place on Christmas eve, bringing the presents for everyone over and sticking them in under the tree. Within thirty seconds of placing the last present and folding up the bag she'd brought the presents over in, her mum would re-organise everything under the tree and send Dorcas off to spend some time with her father, which Dorcas didn't mind in the slightest. She helped him out in his veggie garden this year and avoided anything to do with cooking. After last years catastrophe of forgetting she was boiling water for some kind of pasta dish her dad wanted to make she almost set the house on fire as the water evaporated away and left the pan on the heat bone dry and slowly burning. After dinner they played little board games and had a few drinkies as her mum liked to call them. As a kid Dorcas' drinkies had usually been juice of some kind. As an adult her drinkies were still juice of some kind with the added component of alcohol. It was just a little tradition they'd always had, then after the drinkies and the games they all just sat in the lounge, reading books, silent in one another's company until the first turned in for the night. Last night Dorcas had been the first to turn in and she'd been the last to rise in the morning.
Preparations were well under way for lunch and after she was more awake the three of them sat around the tree and exchanged gifts. As always Dorcas was a terrible gift giver but she'd gotten help from her parents for one another so not everything was entirely awful. Her parents were of course wonderful about everything they received from her and they got her far too much. She was going to have to do some reorganising when she got home because her place already had everything she needed. Admittedly her parents had gotten her some pretty nifty weaponry and training gear but unlike the majority of her fellow Auror's, she didn't have a training room. She'd opted for a larger guest bedroom instead of a third room which would have been a training room and frankly the cottage she had was already big enough, she didn't want to move for an extra room. She had plenty of training opportunities at work and if anyone happened by then she was more than happy for a sparing session, especially if the other was a complete hotty.
After presents and breakfast Dorcas curled up in a blanket in front of the fireplace and read her book, becoming completely absorbed in the mythical world set out by the author. Her mum set up for lunch, expanding the dining table to fit everyone it would need to and her dad was well on to the lunch. Dorcas wasn't even paying attention to anything going on around her until her mum called her to come clear the paths with her. Dorcas rolled her eyes and slipped her new book mark into the Hobbit and placed her book down on the coffee table. There was no way she was going outside without a bit of added warmth so she ran upstairs to her room and grabbed out an ugly Christmas sweater she'd been given from her parents - as was tradition. After slipping it on and feeling all the extra warmth the magical jumper provided she headed back down stairs, slipping her warm fluffy boots on by the front door. She didn't exactly mind the cold but she was still in her jammies so it wasn't really all that great a time to be going out in the freezing bloody cold with snow all around. Still she had her wand and she went out with her mum and started clearing the path to the house, having a good chat as they went and made their way around the back of the house incase anyone was mental enough to want to take a walk around. Her mum always wanted to be prepared but if it had been up to Dorcas, she would have let people clear their own sodding path if they wanted to go out in the snow. The footpath to the house was really the most effort she wanted to put in but she liked spending the time with her mum.

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
This was the first in several long years that Dorian had anyone in his life that he felt compelled to find Christmas presents for. In fact, there were several people he had worried about finding gifts for and Dorian was certain what he had put together was not nearly enough to express his gratitude at their involvement in his and Ariel’s lives. Ariel herself had received several new toys and shiny things for her to look at herself in, not that she understood the concept of gifts or Christmas yet, but she enjoyed her new play things all the same and they kept her well occupied as Dorian finished wrapping the gifts they would be delivering shortly. He piled them carefully into a tote bag before gathering Ariel’s things. They would be spending the afternoon at the Meadowes’, which meant that he didn’t need to pack much for the little miss. Emily had seen to it that Ariel had plenty of supplies already at their lovely cottage so aside from a few bottles all Dorian really needed to gather up was Ariel’s new favorite toy; a purple stuffed puppy with a mirror on its belly and buttons which lit up when you squeezed (or chewed) on its paws. “Alright, young lady. It’s time to get to Gram and Grandad’s. We do not want to be late for your first Christmas lunch, now do we?” Unbuckling Ariel from her chair, he scooped the little angel up, grabbed the bag of gifts he had put together, and the pair headed out.
Snow had been cleared up the walk to the cozy little cottage that the Meadowes called home, but Dorian was still cautious as he carried his niece up the still slick path. Ariel was bundled in a large coat with the hood up, covering her tender blonde curls. She didn’t like having the hood of her coat up, but it was too cold for her to be out without it and soon enough they would be inside where it was sure to be toasty and welcoming. Andre and Emily always outdid themselves on Sunday dinners, so Dorian knew to expect something even more wonderful for their Christmas lunch. The last several weeks Andre had talked excitedly about his vegetable garden and he was giving Dorian tips for starting his own on the roof of his flat which was usually adorned with flowers when the season was right.
Standing under the tiny awning, Dorian rang the bell that hung just outside the front door. He knew he would be lovingly chided for not simply walking in, but it was not in Dorian’s nature to barge in on people’s homes, even if he was expected. He had done so once at Dorcas’ home to disastrous consequences and that was more than enough reason to wait for someone inside to answer the door. Had his mother been alive and invited, she would have stepped inside and loudly exclaimed “knock knock” as if that somehow made up for her not actually knocking on the door. Barbara Humbert had been a wonderfully spirited woman and Dorian missed her greatly, especially around the winter holidays. Emily and Andre could never fill the role of Barbara and Karl Humbert in Dorian’s life, but it was nice to once again have someone older to chat with, to give advice (even if unrequested), and to feel like a part of a family again.

The garden paths were nearly all done and Dorcas was just finishing up the stones along the front of the house with her mam. As the pair turned the corner, quietly chatting. Dorian was at the front door and lifting his hand, ringing the bell. "Hey," She called out, "No need to be so loud, we'll be there in a second." She said sarcastically but the tone didn't convey the sarcasm that was intended, Dorcas just assumed people got her sarcasm and if they didn't then it was all the more fun. Unless it was her mum who purposefully ignored her sarcasm and took Dorcas' word as truth. Dorcas knew her mum got it, she was just being a purposeful pain in the arse in order to irritate Dorcas. Her mother was definitely where she got her irritating genes from.
They were with Dorian and Ariel within seconds. The spell worked fast as they walked their normal pace from one end of the house to the front door. As soon as she got to Dorian and Ariel Dorcas reached out for Ariel and took her from Dorian without so much as asking. "Alright." She said as a greeting to Dorian, "You know you can just let yourself in, right?" She smirked knowing he'd never attempt such a thing if there was ever even the remote chance that she might be around and especially if there was even the remote possibility that Rodolphus could be about. "Come on," She said, turning her attention to Ariel who was all snug and warm in something ridiculously warm looking but she was only little, she wanted to be hood free but in this snow she needed the warmth, even if it wasn't snowing right now, "Lets get you out of this, what is that, fur? You'll over heat with that on in a place like this. And you can help me pick out what to wear. Our selection is very limited, I'm warning you now." She said as she opened the front door and walked in. "And if daddy-Dor's dressed you in too many frills, you're getting an outfit change my girl." She said, pulling the hood down on the infant, supporting her with both hands and stealing her away up stairs. As much as Dorcas loved being comfy in her pyjamas she wanted to get changed into something a little less casual and perhaps, seeing as she had the baby, she might even contemplate changing a nappy if needs be, however if it was poop then Ariel was just going straight to Dorcas' mum, no questions asked. Luckily right now there wasn't a stench coming from the baby so Dorcas figured she was probably safe, and knowing Dorian he probably would have changed her right before they'd left home, whether she was wet or not. So it was off up the stairs the pair went after Dorcas knocked her heals against the bottom of the door frame and stomped on the door mat her feet to get off any traces of snow of dirt.

Oh what a wonderful day it had been! After a beautiful evening as a family last night it was going to be wonderful spending the rest of the day with the rest of their family. Or at least the ones that could come this year. André had been the first to wake up. For absolutely bloody weeks she'd been hearing talk of his vegetable garden, thankfully Dorcas had turned up early yesterday and Emily had managed to avoid helping out with digging the veggies out of the ground. She'd promised to help but Dorcas had wanted to spend some time with her father and Emily wasn't going to get in the way of that, especially if it saved her from getting dirt under her nails. Herbology and plants in general were not something she enjoyed, practical spell work was far more her forte in life, she had a passion for them, even to the point she'd thought of becoming a teacher at one of the schools across Europe but life had pulled her in another direction, which was certainly full of heartache, but it had so many joys too.
After André had prepped his veggies this morning he'd come up and woken her the same way he did every christmas morning, with a kiss and a gift. He was such a romantic and had been since the beginning of their relationship. This year the gift was a beautiful pair of diamond earrings that she was going to wear for the day. Of course after such a gift there was only one proper way to thank her husband and it was the same sort of 'thank you' as every other year they'd been together. Dorcas had still been sleeping and when the pair had been done André went back to the kitchen to check on everything before returning so they could shower together. Romance and connection to one another was certainly not something that was ever missing between the two of them. Over the course of their 44 year marriage things were still as good as ever, if not better.
After getting ready for the day André had returned once more to the kitchen and Emily had spent her time getting ready - loudly. Sure enough the noise was enough to stir Dorcas but it was a while before she had groggily made her way out of her room. While she and André were ready for the day, Dorcas was still in her pyjamas and looking a little worse for wear but that was the same every year, she always got perkier when it was present time and this year was no exception either. The second she'd unwrapped her first gift her face just seemed brighter and emily loved that her little girl, no matter how old she got, was still the exact same person as when she was a child. Of course sometimes that was rather a pain in the behind because it wasn't just in regards to Christmas but Emily loved her daughter regardless.
The morning had been quite busy, Emily got the house ready while André did the meal. When it was a little later in the day Emily walked about outside with Dorcas, bonding, chatting and giggling as they cleared the paths of the snow and ice. As they got to the end a familiar sight met her she beamed that cheery smile of hers, making her way to the front of the house, excited to see Dorian and Ariel on her doorstep, even if he had rung the bell! Honestly, was the boy ever going to learn? Emily wasn't sure but she was happy he'd arrived. This time last year she hadn't known him but now here he was, spending Christmas day with them and his darling little niece, Ariel who Dorcas took no time in stealing from Dorian. As much as Dorcas claimed to dislike children she got on rather well with little Ariel. "Merry Christmas, Dorian love!" She beamed, wrapping her arms around him "How are you darling?" She asked, giving Dorian a squeeze before letting him go. Undoubtedly this Christmas would be his most challenging if he didn't have the support of loved ones but as it was he did have support from people that loved him dearly and Emily was certain he must have known that. "Come on in and I'll get André to make you a cup of tea." She smiled, "I'm not allowed in the kitchen unless I'm asked." She explained. The kitchen was most certainly André's domain, especially on a beautiful Christmas day.

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Reminding Ariel of how much fun she was going to have today as he rang the bell, Dorian’s attention was pulled from his niece not by someone answering the door but by a voice at his back. “Speak of the devil,” he mused to the infant in his arms as he turned with a smile to see Dorcas and Emily heading up the recently cleared walk in his direction. Without warning, Dorcas pulled Ariel from Dorian’s arms and he let her go easily. Dorcas enjoyed complaining about children, and she’d told her parents during many a Sunday dinner that they ought to get used to Ariel being around because she was as close to a grandchild as they would be having, yet Dorian knew to expect the babe to be pulled from his arms almost instantly and it made him smile. “Happy Christmas, Dorcas.” He ignored her comment that he could simply walk straight in. Turning to Emily, he smiled and opened his arms for a hug. Emily was a practiced hugger. “Happy Christmas, Emily. You look lovely today.” The bag of gifts swung in his hand as he gave her a squeeze in return for the one she gave him. “I’m well, thank you. Has that one been keeping you busy?” he asked with a smile after Dorcas as he followed Emily inside.
Stamping his feet on the mat to shake loose the bit of snow he had accumulated, Dorian felt the instant change in temperature. The house was warm, with a savory smell lingering in the air. He shut the door behind him and gave a small chuckle at Emily’s remark about being annexed from the kitchen. “I was the same way with-” Dorian stopped himself and raised his bag of presents. “Where shall I put these?” he said, diverting himself from bringing up Emily’s deceased niece on Christmas. “I have never been very good at gift-giving, but I enjoy it all the same.”
Unknowingly modest, Dorian had a tendency of assuming people were simply being polite should they show excitement over a gift he brought them. He did try to make each one personalized to the recipient’s interests, but this year was exceptionally challenging. He had grown to truly care for Andre and Emily, a dangerous and unfortunate happenstance in his line of work, but he had not known them long, not really. He had only met them once Paris passed, and while the couple welcomed him instantly with warmth and comfort, he continued to try to keep them at arm’s length a good while longer. As luck would have it, neither of the Meadoweses were having any of it and they had lovingly coerced him into their lives and themselves into his heart. Dorcas, he had discovered around the time of her birthday this past October, was also a difficult person to shop for, but then she was generally a difficult person all around. While Dorian was still getting to know his estranged half-brother, Julian, it was pretty clear what sort of gift he would accept from Dorian and it wasn’t something that Dorian could spend money on. He got the sense that Julian was annoyed by Dorian’s position at the Ministry in comparison to his work as a shopkeep. Dorian had also heard that Paris’ friend Geralina may be stopping by for lunch as well. Paris had spoken many times of her best friend and she sounded like just the sort of person Dorian would enjoy spending time with. He found her easy to shop for, despite hardly knowing her at all. He found the easiest person to shop for was, of course, his darling niece who loved everything handed to her, even if it was just a slip of parchment.

Happily scatting his way around the kitchen André stopped to make himself a glass of iced tea. The house was warm and cozy and a little cold yet flavoursome tea poured over a few ice cubes was just divine in the heat of the kitchen. Everything was going, the ovens, the burners and lunch was going to be, well, just c'est magnifique! Parsnips and carrots, peas and broccoli. Not combined, obviously but just delicious home veggies grown by himself. It was going to be delicious, and the meat! Oh he was proud of that too! All from a local butcher who knew a thing or two about good quality meat. André went to him all year round but Christmas the butcher really seemed to outshine himself. Year after year it was all so perfect and, André had to admit, well cooked. André belonged in the kitchen but he hadn't realised until it was too late for him that that was where his natural talent laid. As a young man, living on his own he often got take away or had left over take away. Studying and working at St Mungo's had been a hectic time. Then Emily came along and she liked to cook. Or at least attempt it. She'd not been the best when they'd first started dating but by Merlin she'd improved over the years. Then when Dorcas was born he was thrown into the kitchen as the little babe needed all the attention her little world had to offer. Emily was consumed in caring for their child and André give his hand at cooking. By Merlin he should have tried it sooner!
The bell rang at the door and André checked his food, washed his hands and then dried them off on the tea towel he had hanging from his apron. With a quick flick of a switch the kettle was on and beginning to boil, the front door open and someone already headed upstairs, probably Dorcas on her way to get out of her little jim-jams she'd spent the entire day in thus far. André didn't mind. She could have stayed in them all day if she'd pleased, she wasn't hurting anyone and he wanted for everyone to be comfortable. Emily would probably nag her to go change at some point but her mother only ever had the kindest of intentions, there wasn't anything the two of them wouldn't do for their daughter. They'd tried for so long to have a child and she was their little miracle. "Is that Dorian I hear?" He called out, coming out of the kitchen and walking past the dining table set up for their expected guests and a few extras should anyone else decide to arrive. "Dorian!" He beamed, smiling brightly and noticing the large bag he held in his hand, "Merry Christmas, merry Christmas." He patted Dorian a couple of times on the shoulder while his other arm went around Emily. Dorcas was most definitely the one to have gone upstairs and judging by the lack of a certain little Princess, André presumed she had Ariel too. "I've just popped the kettle on. Make yourself comfy and I'll bring you out a cup of tea." He insisted, giving Emily a peck on the cheek and heading back into the kitchen to grab a few cups and saucers. Lunch wasn't far off but there was always time for a good cup of tea when you arrived and while you settled in.

Dreaming of a Family Christmas Christmas was always the one time of year that wasn't chaotic for Julian. He would go home every year to his parents, and then once she got her own home, to River. He always went to River above anyone else, and much preferred to stay in the spare room in her home rather than the one he'd grown up in in his parents house. He loved his parents dearly, and their loss had devastated him, but it didn't compare to the love he had for his sister. She was there for him in a way nobody else had been, and though his parents had supported him after he had been bitten, they had loved him still and offered him all the help he could need, he felt like only River had actually not changed at all in the way she treated him. Even though it was a subtle change in his mum and dad, it was still there, though River just loved him blindly, like she always had, and that had made his mind up when it came to his regular but unpredictable visits, and he had decided that going to her and not them was what he wanted. Plus, Bert was a real laugh, which made things fun each time he returned. Christmas was easy, light, a time to escape all of his troubles, but this year had rained horror down upon him so much that he had thought it would be a turning point for that happy tradition, a time for it to turn sour and become a nightmare, rather than something to cherish and look forward to. This year he had no parents, no sister, no brother in law, and no visit to his son, since Tristan's mother had plans with friends for Christmas day, and Jules wasn't welcome, which he understood. He would not get in the way of Scarlett's life, he had promised her that, and in return she allowed him to see his son and trusted him with the boy, which meant a lot to Julian. He had visited a few days ago, taking presents and staying overnight to he could spend two days with Tristan and make actual memories with him, knowing he would start to remember these things soon enough now that he was two. That left Julian alone for Christmas day, though, which was unusual and a rather strange feeling. He had told himself it would be fine, he'd just get drunk and paint all day, but then a week before Christmas he had headed down the hall to his brother's apartment on the off chance of catching Dorian home to see Ariel. As it was, Dorian wasn't home, but the woman who looked after Ariel while he worked was there. He'd seen her coming and going from the building quite a bit, and she turned out to be quite the friendly sort, chatting away and eventually inviting him to join her family for Christmas. It seemed odd to Jules at the time, but the more he had thought about it, the more he had smiled at the thought of actually getting to have some sort of family Christmas after all. He didn't really know Dorian's girlfriend's family at all, but they were kind enough to invite him along just because he was related to Dorian, so he would go with that, what could it hurt? They had access to Ariel far more than he did, and if he could get them on side, get them to think of him in a good light, it would only help his cause, wouldn't it. Dorian would look at him playing his part in the happy family dynamic and maybe think of him as someone who might be able to offer something to Ariel. Not that he wanted Dorian's approval. Not at all. Well, he really did, but he'd never admit it. This was all self serving and nothing more. So he got himself dressed on Christmas morning, and apparated to the address he had been given, a small gift for the hosts wrapped in festive paper - nothing more fancy than matching slippers with reindeer on, the noses lit up when it got dark, which Jules thought was quite the entertaining touch, and he'd guessed at the sizes, buying a cheap card to accompany it, in which he thanked the couple for being so kind and wished them all the happiness for Christmas and the new year. It was small, but it was effort when he could afford little more. He had given Dorian some gifts for Ariel the night before, so she would have them to open on Christmas morning, and passed in a card for his brother, too, which had been awkward, but it was done. Crunching up the newly cleared path, he rang the bell by the door and waited, listening to the cheery ding-a-ling sound and hoping that he was in the right place. _______________________ tag: Emily Jane Meadowes , André Daniel Meadowes , Dorcas Amilie Meadowes , Dorian Michael Humbert and Geralina Amara Drake notes: Outfit. <3 template by izzy [googlefont="Dancing Script"]

It was so lovely to see Dorian and Ariel, even if Ariel was a quick glance. Dorcas had taken off with the infant into the house and upstairs but Emilia was positively excited to see what cute little number she was in today. "She's spent the morning reading, surprisingly. Lost in a world of Hobbits, elves and a vicious dragon." She smiled merrily. It wasn't like Dorcas to read unless she had to but the wonderful world of Middle Earth had certainly captured her attention. Stepping in out of the cold was lovely! Dorian allowed her in first which Emily found rather preposterous as it was her own home and guests ought be allowed to enter first but she stepped through regardless and supposed Dorian really was more family than just a friend really. She saw him six days a week. The only time she hadn't seen him was when he'd had to travel somewhere for his job and she and André together looked after Ariel. Oh they had a marvellous time. Ariel was so familiar with the pair and had such a comfortable space here that it was very much like her second home. The little cherub had absolutely missed her uncle Dorian but she'd also had a wonderful time with herself and André, even Dorcas helping out more than Emily could ever have foreseen. Dorcas may never have wanted children of her own but she was rather marvellous with little Ariel. It gave Emily hope that despite Dorcas saying she'd never want or have children, that perhaps, if she met the right man, then she'd happily settle down and have children. They were truly a blessing and Emily knew that Dorcas would thrive as a mother.
Emily offered Dorian an almost sympathetic smile as he almost went on to mention Paris. He skipped over her name and it hurt a little that he thought he couldn't mention her either through his own pain or fear of upsetting her. Emily had cried plenty over the loss of her niece and she still shed a few tears here and there whenever she thought of the wasted life. Leaving poor Dorian alone to raise a child. Emily had faith that if Paris were still alive then she would have stayed by Dorian's side and helped raise the little child. Paris was not the maternal sort, just like Dorcas, but she would have adapted for a man as wonderful as Dorian, Emily was certain. Before Emily could offer a hopefully gentle word or two about Paris, André entered with his jolly Christmas grin and before she knew it he was back off to the kitchen again, leaving Emily with a beaming smile and a heart full of absolute joy. "The tree's just in the lounge. I'm afraid after presents this morning Dorcas rearranged everything so it's all a little scatty." She playfully grimaced. Dorcas tried, bless her, but she was not the organising sort. House work was not something she was gifted at nor did she particularly try too hard with. Cooking was just frightful when she gave it a try and magic had to be used a time or seven to put out random fires she'd somehow managed to cause. Emily had always thought that Paris had been the messiest cook she'd ever come across but Dorcas seemed to take things to a whole different level.
The door bell rang and Emily looked to the door and then back to Dorian, "Excuse me a minute, love, I'll just get that." She smiled and turned, taking the steps she needed to reach the door. Pulling it open she saw the ever so handsome half-brother of Dorian stood there looking a little like a lost sheep. Oh how hard this time of year must have been for him. This time last year he had his mother, his sister, his brother in law and would have been looking forward to spending the next Christmas with a niece too. Sadly he'd lost so much in such a short amount of time and so unexpectedly. Emily's heart felt as though it physically ached for the brothers having lost so many loved ones this year. "Julian, how wonderful to see you, dear! Come in out of the cold and make yourself at home." She offered with a smile, holding the door open for him. There was nothing Emily could ever do to replace the loved ones these two boys had lost but she would try her hardest to give them a little more joy other than the obvious joy their niece provided them both. A link to River and Bert and such pure innocence to be protected. She hoped that however the brothers felt about one another that they would always put Ariel first without hesitation. She knew Dorian would without question but she didn't yet know Julian but she was going to make the effort to welcome him into their family and give him somewhere to turn to if he ever needed it.

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Tolkien. Dorian had read it, too, as a child. He much preferred more realistic works of literature; talking trees and the like did not really sit well with the logical boy, but they had been a fun escape. He was surprised to hear Dorcas was reading anything at all. It was not that he thought of her as daft or uncultured, but she simply seemed more a woman of action than of words and in all the time Dorian had known her he had never witnessed her reading anything other than a casefile. He supposed lighter fare was in order, seeing as how it was Christmas after all.
Andre’s voice boomed joyfully as he stepped out of the kitchen, a wide smile on his face. The older man gave Dorian a few sturdy pats on the back in greeting. “Happy Christmas, Andre.” Dorian had taken rather a shine to Andre. The older man was much more laid back than Dorian was but the Auror found they had several things in common. Dorian had always wanted a family, particularly before his parents’ deaths, and he found Andre to be a very supportive conversationalist on the topic, when Dorian dared to breach the subject. They both enjoyed cooking and gardening. Andre was even giving Dorian tips about starting a produce garden as he was so pleased with the vegetables he’d harvested this year.
Andre did not stay long as he was off quickly to the kitchen and Emily toward the door where another guest was waiting. Smiling happily and shooting a quick glance to the stairs to see if Dorcas was reemerging with his niece – she was not – Dorian headed in toward the lounge to add his little batch of gifts under the tree. Dorian stood for a moment in the otherwise empty room as people moved about in the rest of the house and looked over the beautifully decorated tree. He inspected a few of the ornaments that looked as though they may have a more special meaning or memory behind them; a few home-made ones from what Dorian assumed was a young Dorcas. He wondered how old she had been when she first started making an ornament for her parents. Ariel was obviously still too young but he liked the idea of her running into his arms as he picked her up from nursery with some delicately worked clump of clay painted to look like a Christmas wreath.

Dreaming of a Family Christmas It didn't take long for the door to swing open, and the smiling face of one Emily Meadowes greeted him warmly. Jules felt odd around the woman. She was too kind, too friendly, too... something. It wasn't normal for people to just be so nice and inviting and accepting, not in Julian's world, anyway. When she had invited him to join them for Christmas, Jules had actually enjoyed chatting to her for quite a while, and she had made him miss his mum terribly, though he hadn't realised what the feeling was until later when he was painting himself into numbness at home and his mother's face appeared on the canvas without him even intending to paint her. He had been away from his family for so long after becoming a werewolf that the loss of his parents wasn't actually felt that strongly by Julian, he had had his independence from them for too long, though it still stung to think of himself as an orphan, and it still hurt to know he wouldn't have his mother there to comfort him when he was feeling low, or his father there to give advice to his only son. Emily seemed to trigger those feelings in him for some reason, and Jules couldn't tell if that was a good or bad thing. Maybe feeling like there was some sort of mothering figure around would be a comfort to him eventually. "Merry Christmas. I come bearing gifts," he smiled, stepping inside the cozy home as she held the door back for him and welcomed him inside. "It's not much. Unfortunately me getting a job right on top of Christmas means minimal funds for things like this," he held the parcel of novelty slippers out to Emily along with the card which was written in his neat scrawl, festive wreaths and garlands scribbled all over the envelope by Jules' own hand as his artists fingers had gotten carried away when he'd been writing the card out. "Your home is lovely," he commented, genuinely appreciating how homely and comfortable the place was as he glanced around. "And it smells incredible," he added with a twinkle in his eye, the smells of the dinner that was being cooked filling the air and taking over his sensitive nose. Julian could cook enough to keep himself fed, but it had been a long time since he'd had a home cooked dinner like the one likely being rustled up in the kitchen right then. He was rather looking forward to it, though he was more excited about getting to see his darling niece for Christmas, and the question flowed from his lips without planning. "Is my brother here yet?" he asked. _______________________ tag: Emily Jane Meadowes , Dorian Michael Humbert , Geralina Amara Drake , André Daniel Meadowes and Dorcas Amilie Meadowes notes: Outfit. <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

Julian looked bright eyed and bushy tailed today! His sapphire eyes just seemed to catch the natural light despite the clouds that covered the sun and sky. She'd noticed the same thing a little over a week ago, his eyes just seemed to just twinkle using whatever light there was available. The way he smiled brightened his entire face, his features were so at ease and natural as he smiled that it could make anyone feel comfortable and relaxed to be around. He was a charmer. A natural born charmer. Dorian was lovely, he was a proper gentleman but he didn't have the calm and charismatic nature that Julian had but Emily knew all too well not to trust someone like Julian based on first impressions. He seemed like ever such a lovely chap and while River had mentioned that he was always hoping to move closer to her and her little family soon, Emily knew that, as much as River had loved her captivating brother, he was unreliable. The darling blonde had held her family in such high regards and yet Julian hadn't ever really been there for her in the months that Emily had known the Blackthornes and it was far too late for him to be involved in River's life any longer as it no longer existed, however her heart was still present. The darling little cherub that Dorcas had upstairs was River's absolute world, her heart and soul and without the two ever having met face to face, but there was no way of describing to someone that had never carried life just how it felt to be a mother, to carry your child. While River had not met her child she had loved her so very fiercely. Not every mother felt the same way, some had to meet the child before a connection was formed and some just never connected. Emily had been so very much like River, she had cherished each and every one of her babies and she missed them dearly. Miscarriages and still births had happened which made her feel as though she'd never know what it was like to have a living, breathing child she could love for the rest of her life but she had been wrong, when Dorcas was born she'd known that there was never a human being she could ever have loved as much and River never got the chance to really experience that feeling. Oh how Emily's heart broke for the dearly departed mother.
Julian came in and Emily shut the door behind him, keeping the all too bitter wind out of the home. Emily was very much a winter person and enjoyed walking out and around the home without a coat, just a long sleeved top and a cardy for a few minutes but she knew not everyone appreciated what mother nature had to offer this time of year and she wanted all of her guests to be as comfortable as possible. "Oh Julian, that's so very thoughtful of you, thank you." She beamed, tilting her head slightly at how incredibly thoughtful of Julian this small gesture was, or was it? Perhaps it was some kind of ploy, Emily wasn't sure, she couldn't know so she took it at face value and enjoyed receiving an unexpected gift. Julian carried on, his charming nature just not able to hold back as he complimented their sweet little cottage. Emily chuckled gently, loving her home very much and appreciating Julian's sincerity as he spoke. He was also interested in his brother, although Emily very much doubted those words. It more than likely wasn't Dorian he was interested in finding but rather the sweet little angel that accompanied him. "Oh yes, love. He's just through there," She indicated with her free hand to the lounge, "Dorcas will be down soon with Ariel and I'll bring some tea through in a minute." She smiled, "Make yourself at home." She urged, hoping he'd be able to relax at some point but she could imagine it must have been strange being in the home of people you'd never really met before while at the same time trying to have some kind of tradition Christmas with them. This wasn't really traditional but it was at the same time as it was just a newly evolved family. Hopefully one that could find peace and harmony with one another. They'd all lost so many in their lives that it only seemed right to have found one another and to help each other through the grief they shared.

Dreaming of a Family Christmas Emily seemed rather pleased, almost touched, by the gift Julian had brought with him, and he felt a pang of guilt that what he had gotten for her and her husband wasn't actually all that much at all. He didn't know the couple from any other in the street, to be perfectly honest, though he'd gotten the impression that they were a happy bunch just from chatting to Emily that day at Dorian's. They certainly weren't the kind to seem stuck up or too snooty for a good pair of funny slippers, and he got the distinct impression that they were cut from the same cloth as his own parents, which comforted him. She told him that Dorian was in the lounge and to make himself at home while she made tea for everyone, and Julian thanked her with a warm smile, watching as she disappeared, blue eyes shooting a glance at the stairs as he wondered what Dorian's girlfriend would be doing with Ariel up there. Maybe a soiled nappy or an outfit change was needed. He did hope they would be down soon. It wasn't hard to navigate the small cottage, and Jules was surefooted as he made his way into the living area, which was small but comfortable, and decorated for the season with a lovely Christmas tree, which was being admired by one Dorian Humbert. Surprised to see him in anything other than a suit, Jules approached with feigned confidence, holding his hand out to the man. "Merry Christmas, brother," he greeted, thinking any sort of hug type movement might result in awkwardness, and this whole thing was uncomfortable enough without Julian making it worse. He wouldn't have minded a hug, himself, he had been raised to be quite an affectionate lad, much like his sister, who had been rather tactile her whole life. He regarded the tree, and the small ornament Dorian had been admiring, which could have easily been made by a child. Jules had a small tree in his apartment at home. He wouldn't have bothered, only Tristan had been brought to visit and Julian would never stoop so low as to disappoint his baby boy, so he had gotten a tiny little thing and let the boy make paper decorations for it. They were mostly filled with scribble and blobs of lumpy glitter, as was fitting for a two year old, but they made Julian immensely happy whenever he looked at them, probably a much similar feeling to the one that Emily and her husband got when they looked at this tiny bauble. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert , Dorcas Amilie Meadowes , André Daniel Meadowes , Emily Jane Meadowes and Geralina Amara Drake notes: Outfit. <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
The bell rang and Dorian’s attention was momentarily diverted from the tree toward the doorway through which Dorian could make out part of the entryway but none of the people standing there. He heard muffled voices talking but his attention soon returned to the tree as he found yet another homemade ornament, this one bearing a picture of Dorcas at a very awkward time in her development where her teeth were too large for her head and she had a mouth so big it looked as though she could swallow the Christmas roast whole. Was this what Dorcas’ children would one day look like? Dorian chuckled to himself as footsteps announced he would not be alone for much longer.
Julian appeared, and although Emily had informed Dorian that she’d invited his half-brother, and he very clearly knew the man would be joining them as Dorian had brought his gift along, too, it was still something of a shock to see the man standing in the Meadowes’ home. Dorian smiled warmly. “Happy Christmas, Julian.” He took Julian’s hand in his own and gave it a hearty shake. “I am so pleased you decided to join us.” He looked to the doorway again for a sign of Dorcas, Emily, or Andre but there was no one to be found following his brother into the lounge. “Ariel is just upstairs with Dorcas. She’ll be pleased to see you.” He wasn’t quite sure what to say to this man who had entered their life to suddenly and thought himself clever moving in down the hall from Dorian as if to spy on the Auror and his niece. Tensing his jaw, Dorian gave a quarter turn and found a comfortable place to sit on the smaller sofa, crossing his ankle over his knee and looking to Julian for a sign of how to proceed. This was Julian’s first Christmas with the Meadowes, and Dorian’s too although he felt far more comfortable in the warm little cottage than he suspected Julian of being, having spent most every Sunday here for a few hours time at least.

Everything was plodding along perfectly in the kitchen and André was preparing the tea pot. Dorian was the first but he wouldn't be the only and when more people arrived they'd of course need a nice warm cuppa to greet them from the cold and make them forget about the harshness of the winter wonderland outside. Huddled about and being warm and cosy was what Christmas was all about. Sharing it with your loved ones however they came to be in your life. Fairly soon the door was going again just as André was opening the oven, feeling the heat rush out and fog up his glasses for a moment. They cleared and he looked over his labours and everything was splendid. The kettle clicked and André closed up the oven, placing his oven gloves down on the kitchen counter while he heard Emily talking to someone. He'd find out just who in a minute, for now he'd just get the pot of tea ready. "Em," He called out, waiting until his wife was in the kitchen with him, smiling at the gift she held in her hands. "Can you get the biscuits please, sweetheart?" He asked, setting up the tray with cups, saucers, sugar, milk and teaspoons, ready for their guests.
Picking up the tray once the plate of shortbread biscuits were set down on them he made his way in to the lounge where he saw Dorian and an unfamiliar face. "You must be Julian!" He beamed, stetting the tray down on the coffee table and standing upright, he extended his right hand to the younger man as her put his left hand on Julian's shoulder. It'd be too much to hug the lad upon first meeting but André was sure they'd work up to that! Someday! Perhaps sooner than Dorian, he truly did not seem like the hugging sort at all but River had been wonderful with her hugs. "How are you doing?" He said as though greeting an old friend. He'd heard so many things from River about her brother and he only wished she could be here with them, it would have been a magical Christmas with her and Bert, young Julian too. River held her brother in such high regards it was truly a pleasure to be meeting him now, and of course Emily had made mention of how handsome the chap was. André hoped they could give the lad a little time to enjoy the holiday, they both knew it wasn't an easy time of year, this year in particular they were all feeling a loss, but with any luck they could get through it with one another's support.
