A fire raged before Dorcas' eyes. Flames of red, orange and yellow leapt into the air, engulfing the house that stood before her. Without hesitation she ran off into it, her wand spraying water every-which-way that she could, the water pouring forth and winding its way through the house, smothering flames and avoiding the bodies that lay on the ground, causing smoke and steam to fill the rooms. Another wand opened windows and doors for ventilation so she could get through faster without having to wait. The safe house had been compromised and it had been too late for the Order of the Phoenix to prevent it. Dorcas had been with Albus when he'd received word and she made her way to the house immediately. Everything, apart from the fire, was calm and quiet, as thought no one was around. Dorcas was doubtful that it would stay quiet for long. The safe house had been in the middle of a wizard and muggle community, much like that of Godric's Hollow. With its defences gone it meant that it was open for the world to see, to invade. Dorcas went from room to room, looking for anyone that may have survived. It was a four bedroom place but each bedroom could fit a family. A family that were in limbo, waiting for the Order to secure them a home of their own to move in to, whether it be in the United Kingdom or overseas somewhere. The living room had one body. Harrius Plimstock. He'd had his throat slit, blood had spread all over the burn, green carpet. He was gone. The kitchen had a group of people in it. A husband and wife with their five year old daughter. All deceased. Dorcas carried on, making her way through to the dining room as quickly as she could while keeping an eye out for any signs of life. As she entered the pale pink room she heard a noise from upstairs. A soft bang but it was something. Torn wallpaper slowly fell from the wall as she cut through the dining room, spotting another deceased body, though she didn't stop to see who it was.
Taking the stairs two at a time, Dorcas' feet splashed in the soaked and charred carpet. "Hello?" She called out, her wand at the ready, "This is Auror Meadowes with the Ministry of Magic. Is there anyone here?" Although it wasn't the Ministry that had sent her it was good enough as a cover. If a Death Eater were to find her then she was only doing her Ministry appointed job and she could hardly be held accountable for doing her job. "Is there anyone here?" She called out one more. She heard a shuffle from the bedroom closest to her at the top of the stairs. Slowly she entered the bedroom and could see that the fire had almost spared this room. Only a light burning of the carpet and minimal smoke damage to the ceiling. Dorcas made her way in slowly. There was no one in plain sight but the wardrobe door was slightly ajar. She had a quick check under the beds before she made her way over to the wardrobe. The floor creaked beneath her weight and she pulled the door open fast. Terrified out of his wits, a small boy screamed and burst into tears. She didn't know this kid but she looked around for anyone else and then bent down. "Come one kid," She said, somewhat urgently, "We need to get you out of here." He was frozen but Dorcas didn't care. She grabbed the boy, who was heavier than he looked compared to when he was curled up in the wardrobe, and started making her way back down the stairs as fast as she could, carrying him more carelessly than she would have usually, but he was heavy, probably about six years old but solid. As she reached the front of the house she heard the familiar popping noise of other people apparating. She spied Atlas first and waved him over, passing the boy to him before heading back into the house, various other Aurors surrounding the place and entering, too.

My promise to you always and forever
Be advised there is an arson in progress in Owl Creek. Suspects at large. Dark Mark reported to muggle police. All units requested. The voice rang out across Level Two of the Ministry building before the Department Head appeared in his office doorway, barking orders. Dorian leapt to his feet, Alastor right behind him, pulling his jacket from the back of his desk chair as the pair disapparated, the dispatch announcement fading as the room swirled around them and disappeared.
The building was engulfed in flames when the Aurors arrived, but Dorian and his partner weren’t alone. There wasn’t time to consider how Atlas had managed to beat them to the crime scene – had he even been in the office with the call came in? – nor how Dorcas had managed to already be pulling children from the inferno. Dorian dashed in behind her, water gushing from the tip of his wand. Alastor took to removing the Dark Mark that hung over the burning home as a pair of Obliviators began pulling muggle onlookers away.
There wasn’t much time and already Dorian was faced with so much carnage. Sirens from a muggle fire engine could be heard blaring in the distance. Fast footed, Dorian passed the body of a man in the living room but there was no need to pause, the man’s neck had been slashed and he had clearly passed on. A trio of bodies lay in the kitchen, Dorian hesitated just long enough to check but they were all gone. He thought there might have been hope for the little girl, but when he turned her to check her pulse, he saw the life had been ripped from her body as well. “Ground floor; clear,” he shouted, having gone through the dining room and the study finding much of the same. He turned up the stairwell just before a treacherous snarl erupted from the entry hall as a beam feel from the ceiling, partially blocking the front door. The house shook and creaked under the furious crackle of the fire. They were running out of time. Dorian glanced quickly over his shoulder at the front door, now ablaze, then turned back toward the first floor. “Auror Department,” he called out as he rushed up the stairs. “Is anyone here?”

Dorcas was up the stairs and searching the last three bedrooms while others were double checking the ground floor. After she'd finished searching the very basic bedrooms she marked the doors with a large, magical blue 'x'. Bright enough to stand out against the surrounds and not be confused with fire. Easy enough to be seen and understood. Not attached to the door so should the door meet its demise, the 'x' would still be floating there. Dorcas was in the last of the four bedrooms which was easily the bedroom that had suffered the most destruction. Everything was upturned, nothing was where it should have been. A dresser of draws leant against the opposite wall, next to a window. It was tilted forward and the draws had slid along their rails, revealing just a few clothes inside. A deep red rug on the floor was folded almost in half. One wardrobe door was ajar while the other was flung open. Clothes were scattered all over the place, starting at the wardrobe. Someone had left in a hurry and there had been a fight, by Dorcas' deductions. This was the most telling room of the whole house. Clothes were missing, it wasn't just fire damage and there weren't the tale tale signs of a fight, it looked as though someone had done a runner.
With the room checked and cleared, Dorcas exited, marking the door just in time to hear a beam fall and hear Dorian coming up the stairs, announcing the Auror departments presence. Dorcas headed to the shared bathroom. Shower, bath, double sink, toilet. A couple of fresh scuff marks on the floor. One dead body in the bath. Male, facing up, looking as though he was in his mid-thirties. His brown hair was cut short but not well kept and his clothes looked as though they belonged on a man a size larger than the dead guy in the tub. Dorcas checked to be sure but it looked as if he had been dead a while. Rigor mortis looked to have set in by the rigidity of the man. His dark brown eyes staring upward, blank, almost terrified. He'd probably seen the face of his killer. The victim had been dead a while but he had plenty to tell. The folds of the clothes were suggestive of a moved body. The trousers were pulled up at the ankles and tight around the crotch. The baggy tee shirt was lopsided and bunched but there wasn't time for a full assessment, she just checked for bodies and survivors, but this was the only one in the whole house that seemed out of place. Once the house was secure and fire-free everywhere else, whoever was leading the investigation for this one would look closer at it, but this was a Death Eater hit on an Order safe house. With corruption ripe in the Ministry, Dorcas was certain this wouldn't get investigated properly.

The first floor landing was filled with smoke. Dorian covered his mouth with the crook of his arm, squinting his eyes. His wand, pointed at the flames that seeped under the door of the nearest room, sprayed water in attempt to clear the hallway. Bright blue Xs hung over each of the doorways. Dorian was relieved and confused at the same time but there was no time question the speed with which Dorcas had cleared the house. “All clear?” he asked over the crackling inferno to the figure stood in the shared bathroom. “The exit is going to take a bit of teamwork,” the Auror explained, jutting his head in the direction of the stairs behind him and ultimately the front door which was blocked by a fallen beam and surrounded by flames. He could levitate the support beam that had fallen in the entryway, but the flames would need to be extinguished or at least held back if they were going to make it through the door. Disapparation was a possibility, but a risky one. Any number of things could go wrong trying to flee from the flames and they could end up splinched and on fire wherever they came out. The door was the safest option between the two of them, but the bathroom where Dorcas stood was the only remaining room not given the all-clear. Dorian wouldn’t leave any living person behind.

There was a lot to investigate in the burning house but not right now. Parts of the house were still on fire while others were so damp fire didn't stand a chance. Dorcas had cleared a way for herself to get through the house while still preserving the bodies and hopefully most of the evidence, if not all, while she made her way from room to room, assessing quickly, moving on when she was sure a room was clear. Before her fellow Aurors had arrived she had managed to clear the ground floor but it was always worth a second opinion, so while Dorian had been checking the lower floor, Dorcas had done the bedrooms and bathroom. Still the fires spread. Still the house burned and it was too much for one witch alone. On the other side of the bathroom door Dorian spoke of finding an exit. Dorcas stepped out of the bathroom. "The whole house is going to need a bit of teamwork." She commented. "This floor is clear of civilians but we gotta find a way to preserve as much as possible. There's a body in the bath but it was put there after it was killed." She told him, waving her wand and clearing the blue 'x' marks she'd left on all the doors. "First floor cleared." She called down. "Aguamenti." She flourished her wand and water poured out. Another flourish and the flow grew. One more and it took off in front of her, dousing flames in the hallway. "Come on then," She said to Dorian, following the water down the hallway, watching it do its job of extinguishing the small fires. Hopefully any other Aurors around were doing their duty to extinguish what they could meaning she and Dorian would only have to follow the stairs down to the front door and exit. Though of course nothing was ever that easy.

“Alastor and the others are working on it, outside.” He had heard a muggle firetruck earlier but knew Alastor wouldn’t allow them to contaminate the scene. There were others from the Ministry on their way, he was certain of it. Obviously they would save as much as they could, but the perpetrator had set the fire on purpose and only after he – or she, or they – had killed the residents. Fire had already destroyed evidence, how much of it was already ashes, they wouldn’t know. Dorian knew it was vital to save as much of the structure as possible for their investigation, but he did not want himself nor Dorcas to be one of the corpses recovered from the debris.
Dorian’s eyes flicked toward the door Dorcas had emerged from, assuming it to be the bathroom where the dead body had been transported post mortum. The other bodies he had come across appeared to have been killed where they laid. It was an interesting change of MO but not uncommon in these Death Eater attacks. They were often a group effort and no two dark wizards were ever quite the same. Following Dorcas’ lead, he headed down the stairs, continuing to dowse the flames as they crossed them. Coming to the front entry, Dorian switched tactics and made to levitate the fallen beam out of the way. It was a tight fit between the walls and without damaging the structure further, it took a bit of effort, but soon the path to the front door was clear.

Well with people working on the fire outside and the two of them inside, Dorcas was sure it wouldn't be long until the whole building would be secure, then whoever was in charge of the investigation could inspect the place from top to bottom. Dorcas only hoped it wouldn't be traced back to the Order, but if it was she'd try and run interference, as she was sure Alastor, Atlas, Kit, or Noah would if they needed to. Hopefully the investigation was in Order hands, and if not Order hands then Dorian's, because at least he was fair and she could probably access his notes without too much suspicion. Maybe.
Dorian levitated a beam while Dorcas continued to put out fires. She exited the house and saw a whole team of witches and wizards surrounding the house, probably from various different departments. She didn't bother joining in the effort to put out the flames as she and Dorian were waved over by Healers, no doubt wanting to give them the once over after being in a burning building and all. Being the good little Auror that she was, Dorcas went directly to the healer, but she took the opportunity of being in one spot to observe the house from a bit of a distance. The Dark Mark was gone from the sky but there were still tell-tale signs of other magics all around.

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
Removing the Dark Mark that hung over the burning building was an easy enough task, though the magic took some time to dissipate, it was not a complicated task. Just a lengthy one. Thankfully, if there were anything at all to be thankful for in this situation, the attack on the safe house had occurred during the day so the glittering skull and snake hanging in the sky did not draw they eye in the same manner as the green glow that it created at night. Of course there were more muggles awake at the moment to notice the mark, so Alastor got to work immediately working to take down the tell-tale sign of a Death Eater attack.
With his first task completed, Alastor directed a few of the Obliviators to muggles he’d seen passing by that had managed to duck into a nearby home without wizard detection, then he joined the team extinguishing the fires around the outside of the building. When Dorcas and Dorian emerged they were ushered to the Healers and with the house merely more than a smolder, Alastor took advantage. “What of the families?” he asked Dorcas, positioning himself with his back to Dorian. This wasn’t Moody the Auror talking, it was Moody the Order member and the man who had been working diligently to smuggle the muggle-born families to safety. He had failed and he was furious.

There wasn't a lot to say about who was in the house and what state they were in. Dorcas had done her fair share of breaking news to people and it rarely ever bothered her, even this wasn't much of a bother but only because she had the unhealthy habit of compartmentalising. Without that she'd have been a mess and she knew it. "Only survivor is the boy." She said quietly, the Healer bustling around her, checking her over, "It's a mess in there, Al." She said. Slit throats, brutal deaths, young victims, bloodied floors and walls, water and fire damaged interior, "Willing to bet the cadaver in the bath looks like he might have a story to tell." She looked about, "You have to take the lead on this case," She pointed out, as if it weren't already obvious, "Tell Humbert it's too big for him to deal with the training academy and a large investigation like this, or something." She would have taken the lead herself but she hadn't technically been told about the establishment and multiple homicides in an official capacity.

Only the boy. He and Dormiens had managed to smuggle several families out of the country by way of this safe house. Many people in and then out, as quickly as they could manage without completely abandoning them in a foreign country without shelter or connections. They had saved so many from persecution but it hadn’t been enough. They hadn’t saved them all. Alastor’s large hands were clenched into fists. Only the boy. They’d had a full house; four families, children, mothers, sons. Only the boy had survived, orphaned. Alastor had promised to protect him and he had failed spectacularly. Now he was expected to take lead? Alastor cursed loudly, smashing one of his fists into a nearby tree trunk. “Alright,” he managed through gritted teeth. “I’ll handle Humbert.”

Upon exiting the smoldering building, the Healers waved he and Dorcas over. Dorian glanced around at the scene outside as he moved toward the makeshift triage center. Only a few small flames were still visible, and the rest was mostly smoke and ash. The house was still standing, and the Healer inspected him Dorian thought he and Dorcas had actually done a fairly decent job securing the interior. It had gone surprisingly quick. She’d even managed to save a kid, albeit that was before Dorian had arrived. Strange, because he’d left as soon as the alarm had been sounded. He wasn’t known for dilly-dallying. The Healer asked him to turn around, and Dorian complied. Now he was faced with a more perplexing view of the crime scene. Alastor and Dorcas whispering excitedly. That wouldn’t have been all too concerning had he not thought he’d heard his name between the two of them. Add to that Dorcas’ early arrival and, now that he was not rushing into a burning building he had time to take her in, her unconventional work-wear. Dorian was growing suspicious.
He was released by the Healer with a bill of good health and immediately approached the whispering pair. “You saved that boy. Nice work,” he commented in Dorcas’ direction, though his eyes flitted between them both. “Fast work. I’d say you earned Lead on this case, Agent Meadowes but then, I don’t remember you being on shift.” He wanted to be wrong, prayed he was wrong, but his instincts were telling him that Dorcas was up to something. Possibly Alastor, too. He knew there was corruption within the Ministry but he hadn’t dreamed…

Dorcas knew it was a big ask but better Alastor getting the case than anyone else. He knew how many people were in there, he would know if anyone was missing. He was a damn fine Auror - almost as good as she was - and he would see to it that everything that needed to be taken care of, would be. "We need t-" Dorcas went quiet and fast as she saw Dorian nearly upon them. The Healer left her to be with her colleagues and she locked eyes with Dorian for a split second before he began looking to Alastor and then back to Dorcas. Her gaze didn't falter. She didn't care for praise, in fact she very much hated being praised for doing her job and she'd probably bitch about it to Dorian himself the next time they were off duty, but for now she was going to have to dodge his suspicions. "Just a case of right place, right time, Agent Humbert." She said with a shrug. It was small village but it was both magical and muggle, which meant Dorcas being there was plausible, although not necessary likely.

The opportunity to handle Agent Hymbert came quicker than expected. Dorcas went quiet and Alastor turned his head to see Dorian approaching them at a steady pace. The man’s tone was not quite accusatory but Al knew him better than to suspect his statement was as innocuous as it may have seemed. “Good thing you were here, too, Agent Meadowes. That kid is terribly lucky you have such good timing.” Alastor gave his head a nod in the direction of where the boy was still being looked over a few yards away. “Dorian,” the hulking Auror stepped toward the trimmer man, crossing in front of Dorcas as he aimed to move the conversation away from any suspicions toward her, “this is going to be a massive investigation. Meadowes was just filling me in on the body count inside.” Alastor didn’t need the numbers, he knew who had been in there; he’d put them there. Like sheep to the slaughter. Their deaths were on his hands. “We’ll need experience heading the case.”

Right place at the right time, what a bunch of dragon dung. Dorian opened his mouth to reply, though admittedly more tactfully than how he might have imagined, when Alastor interjected. The taller man attempted to guide Dorian away from Dorcas as he spoke about finding the right lead for the case, but Dorian stood his ground, his eyes evaluating Dorcas as his jaw clenched. He didn’t want to believe that there might be something more nefarious than a Death Eater attack at play here. “What were you doing Owl Creek?” he questioned. Judging by her attire, she wasn’t out for a stroll in the middle of such a cold winter’s night. She would have frozen to death, unless she’d been planning to roam around a burning building for warmth.

Dorcas figured with Alastor dealing with Dorian, now would be the perfect time to get away, however it seemed that Dorian was having none of that, instead he was pursuing his lead, pursuing her. Merlin she'd have loved that any other time, but with everything that had happened in the safe house, Dorcas wasn't up for jerking Dorian about. At least not too much. "Visiting a friend." She said, tilting her head at Dorian, knowing he had a lot more that he wanted to ask. He was a damn good Auror and he had a hunch that something wasn't right with Dorcas' story and she couldn't see him just letting that go. They'd known one another for over a decade, she considered him practically family these days, but if something didn't sit right in his gut, then Dorcas knew he wasn't going to let it go. That didn't mean he was going to make things easy for him. She'd play nice, or at least nice enough. This was a very fine line that she was walking.
