A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now Geralina had spent far too much time being a recluse of late. If it wasn't for the likes of good friends like Dorcas, and Tersha, and Dorian, she didn't know how she would have coped with the difficult hand life had been dealing her over the past few years. She knew she wasn't alone, and that those around her had felt their own share of pain and loss, too, and that helped, though she hated the feeling that her friends were hurting. Since Paris had died, it had seemed to set in motion some sort of domino effect. Tristan had died barely a year later, and though she had felt a bit strange around him at first, given the fact that they had dated as kids, she had gotten used to his presence around the castle, and she sometimes wondered if she should have kept her distance, because his death might not have hurt so much then. If losing the humans she cared about wasn't bad enough, her ancient little elf owl, Tala, had passed away before Christmas, and then her old cat Chase had gotten sick in the new year and had to be put to sleep by Johnny. Was it any wonder she'd been quiet for months? Keeping to herself, and going about her routine had felt safe and kept her calm. Going to work every day, coming back home, having cereal for tea, reading in bed until she fell asleep. It had become her safe place even more so than it ever used to be, and it was taking a lot of effort to drag herself back into the real world slowly. She wasn't entirely alone in her routine, the people that had died had had pets, and it seemed everyone thought of Geralina as the person to take said pets in. Of course she would never say no to that, she was an animal lover if ever there was one, but sometimes it was a stab through the heart when she looked at Rigel and remembered when Paris had first ended up with him. Pippa, her little spaniel dog, was less of a heartache. Geralina had only had her for a year and a half, and she had come from the Blackthornes, so Geralina was detached enough to enjoy the pup without the sad thoughts that accompanied Rigel. She had brought Pippa with her today, and secured her in a safe area in Dorian's back garden with some shelter and a bowl of water. Luckily Dorian's entire back wall of his home was made of glass, so all she had to do was glance sideways and she could see the little dog snoozing in a patch of late winter sun, happy as can be. She was a good dog, she had been sweet when she'd first come to Geralina, a little bit confused, but young enough to adapt. Geralina had trained her up really well, and sometimes she even came to the castle with her, enjoying the fireplaces in the winter months. Geralina had been a bit apprehensive about bringing her to Dorian's brand new home, she knew he hadn't had pets before and probably wouldn't be getting any until Ariel was old enough to pester him for one. Pippa was an angel, though, she would just play with her ball and snooze the whole time, Geralina was positive of that. What she wasn't sure about was the outcome of these cakes she was mixing up in Dorian's kitchen. His entire house was streamlined and spotless, sparkling from top to toe, and she didn't fancy ruining his shiny counters in cake mix and mess. She'd clean up as she went, that was easy enough, but she couldn't predict whether Ariel would want to paint herself in icing or not. She had the toddler sat on the counter top in front of her as she mixed up a batch of cake batter with a whisk, a few droplets of thick, creamy goo spraying into her hair and onto Ariel's face, making the little blonde giggle and try to lick it off of her nose. "Oops! Is that tasty?" Geralina laughed, pulling a tray of empty cake cases closer to them and giving Ariel a small spoon. "Okay, time to get messy," she said, helping her to scoop spoonfuls into each case and catching drips on her fingers. She licked them off, unable to resist having a little taste. Ever since she was a little girl herself, she had always insisted that the cake mixture tasted better than the cake, and to this day, she would probably still say the same. It was delicious! "Shall we ask Dor to put these in the oven for us?" she said to Ariel, scooping her up and sitting her on her hip as she carried the full tray over to Dorian, who had been appointed Chief Oven Worker. It was basically his job to get the cakes in and out of the oven so that, one; Ariel wouldn't go near and burn herself, and two; Geralina wouldn't go near and burn herself. She'd had a few mishaps in the past, and if she could get someone else to do the hot stuff for her, Geralina definitely would. Besides, Dorian needed something to do, he couldn't just watch, or chill out while the women did all the hard work. Geralina didn't entirely trust him to join in in the cake mixing part, she had no idea whether he could bake or not, but she'd rather not chance it. It was amazing how much they had grown closer over the years since they'd lost Paris. She would count Dorian as one of her closest friends if asked, and it was strange to even think that once upon a time she had looked at him with swooning teen eyes and dubbed him "Hot Humbert". Now he was just Dor, but there was still so much about him that she had to learn. Like whether he could bake. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 1035 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

My promise to you always and forever
Dorian was caught off guard by the additional company today. Geralina had been expected but her dog, Pippa was a somber yet pleasant surprise. Pippa would have been Ariel’s childhood pet. They were supposed to have grown up together and formed a bond that people looking in would never quite understand but find heartwarming nonetheless. He would have taken the dog after River and Bert’s passing but there were too many barriers at the time, and Geralina seemed to make the most sense. She already had Paris’ cat and she had the space, patience, and kindness to care properly for another animal. It was a god fit and Pippa was really a well-behaved pup with Geralina’s support. They set up a nice little area for the dog to rest outside and if the weather held up Dorian would take Ariel out to play with her parents’ pet on the grass while they waited on the cupcakes to cool.
The kitchen was Dorian’s space to escape, though he didn’t mind sharing his escape with anyone else. He enjoyed cooking and was rather good at it, if he did say so himself, and he even knew how to bake a few tasty desserts. His baking skills were nothing compared to the treats Geralina could whip up. She had a creative side to her that was admirable and the patience to see through some pretty tedious and intricate creations. Dorian hoped she wasn’t too put off by the mess today’s treats would probably end up as, seeing as how Ariel had found out how to get into just about everything she wasn’t supposed to. Any fancy little designs would most definitely be smashed splatters by the time the tiny blonde was through, but it was a fun process to go through and Dorian enjoyed sharing his passion in the kitchen with his niece.
Ger and Ariel poured the batter into the cake cases as Dorian stood by patiently, enjoying watching his niece play with such delight. The cases filled, it was time to put the tray into the oven and Geralina brought the task to him. “Ariel, I understand, but you, Ger, should be able to use an oven without harming yourself.” He smiled playfully at the woman and took the tray from her, turning to pull the oven open and set the tray on the center rack with ease. “How long should I set the timer for?” he asked, shutting the oven door properly and pulling the latch tight so that Ariel, should they for some reason lose track of her which he would never allow, couldn’t pull the oven door open on herself.

A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now Dorian's teasing brought a smile to Geralina's face. "No comment," she offered with a cheeky grin, smoothing a few of Ariel's curls away from her face. "Besides, it means I get more baby cuddles." That was a pretty good reason for having Dorian do the more dangerous activities. It meant that Geralina could hold on to Ariel and just enjoy the adorable tot without having to send her away from hot ovens and make the toddler gain a complex that Geralina didn't like her. She had just about started calling Geralina by name, and it was the cutest thing ever. She didn't want to do anything to ruin that progress and scare Ariel off. Granted, Ariel's version of the name was slightly different, but it worked. Being called Jellya was one of the cuter names she'd been given over the years, and she was happy to be known as Jelly to someone so cute. It would become problematic once Dorcas heard it in use and adopted it for herself, but Geralina supposed she'd have to deal with that at some point or other. "Set it for twelve minutes," she told Dorian as he popped the tray into the oven. That should be plenty of time for the cakes to bake nice and soft, and for her to whip up some icing for the top. She was looking forward to the decorating part, mostly because she expected it to go very, very wrong, and for Ariel to need a bath afterwards. She hoped Dorian wouldn't be too put out by it, but he had invited her over for the day, so he really should have expected something. Toddler fun was always messy, but she'd try and keep it to a minimum, since she wasn't the one responsible for cleaning up Ariel after. She set a wriggling Ariel down in in the living room near some toys she had been playing with earlier, and leaned against the arm of the couch. "How are you two settling in?" she asked. It had been a month or so since Dorian had decided to ditch his tiny apartment for a proper house, but it looked like they were used to it already. Geralina had even helped a little bit. She had been surprised but willing to lend a hand when Dorian had mentioned that he had no idea how to make a bedroom for a little girl. She was sure he would have managed just fine, but when she'd come around to take a look, it turned out he was right, and Ariel's room had been rather plain and a bit boring. She'd suggested some splashes of pink and other gentle colours, and managed to get the room looking girly enough for a little princess, but neat and clean enough for Dorian. It had been fun, and she'd spent her time imagining what it might be like when she had kids of her own one day, but that was a whole other can of worms that she didn't want to open up. She would likely need a father for said children before they would be a possibility, and she was horribly single and didn't see that changing any time soon. She had managed to push those thoughts far, far away, and focus on just getting to a point in life where people stopped dying before thinking about other things. Besides, she could fuss over Ariel whenever she liked, and Freya was having her baby in the summer, that would be another little one for her to steal cuddles from. It was all good. For now. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 632 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

My promise to you always and forever
He turned the knob on the timer and adjusted it to ring in twelve minutes, giving it a second glance over just to be sure he’d done it right. No one wanted burnt cupcakes and Ariel was still too young to understand why he would not want her to eat them. Secretly he was looking forward to them as well, but he knew Geralina enjoyed spending time with his little niece and would jump at just about any excuse to see her. He hoped her love of baking would rub off on the little girl as she grew older, and her love of books. Dorian kept enough books in the home to be considered a small library but Geralina was a legitimate librarian and possibly a bigger book lover than he was. They got on really well actually and he was pleased to have re-met her thanks to Paris.
Coming around the counter and into the living room where Ariel was now occupying herself with some toys, trying to jam a brightly colored plastic star into a star-shaped hole in a shape sorter cube before giving up and mouthing on the corner of it. “It’s going very well. I didn’t think we would need so much space but it really has been a help.” Dorian sat on the plush ottoman in the center of the room, facing Geralina and with Ariel on the floor just to his side. “Ariel adores the room you made for her. Makes a mess of it whenever she can.” He smiled. She was no longer an infant and a cot in the corner of his room wasn’t cutting it any longer. A room of her own that she could grow into was exactly what Ariel needed though she wasn’t big enough to be left to her own devices in there just yet.

A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now "More room for toys," she agreed with a smile that was mildly teasing. "And pets." Well now she was just twinkling with mischief. He really did have the space for a pet or two now, Dorian couldn't deny that. This house was gorgeous, and if it wasn't filled with far too many toys and toddler accessories within about six months, she would be very surprised. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to go from such a small space to a large house. Her own cottage was tiny. It was beautiful, Geralina loved living there, but it definitely wasn't a family home. She managed to fit herself, her pets, and her books into it comfortably, but that was her limit. She had a spare room which had been turned into something of a library, and family and friends could stay over, but you couldn't swing a cat in any of the rooms. Not that she'd tried. Swinging cats was definitely not something she was into. She didn't want to move any time soon, though. She liked being in Hogsmeade. It was close to the school so she didn't have to be cooped up in the castle all year long, and it was a two minute stroll to the shops. So convenient, and peaceful. She could read for hours in her back garden and not hear another sound save for birds singing, and the occasional meow from Rigel. She didn't get many days like that, though. Her shifts at the library were pretty long, and she couldn't complain, she got to read in there, too. When it was particularly quiet and she didn't have too much to do, she would often sit by the small fireplace in the back room and read until she heard the bell on the desk ring, or until she thought she might run out of time to sort through all of the returned books before she finished for the day. She was pretty quick at it these days, she'd been in the job for a while now, and could probably do it in her sleep. Oh, but just think of how many book shelves she could fit in a bigger house! She could have a whole room that was an actual library! No. Nope. She couldn't afford to do something like that anyway. She'd need to change her job, which she didn't want to do, and she was sure there were other reasons that she couldn't think of. So many reasons. Dorian was commenting on how much of a mess Ariel liked to make in her new room, and Geralina laughed. "Next you need to teach her how to tidy up," she said, smiling down at the tot as she played happily. She didn't imagine Ariel would be tidying up her own messes for quite some time yet. Then again, Dorian seemed to be so good at everything he put his hand to, you never knew what he could train a small child to do. If he could keep a bunch of young, inexperienced trainee Aurors under control, then he could probably do anything. He could probably even train a pet. She could just picture him having the most well behaved cat in the universe, that sat on command, used the toilet, and fed itself with a magical bowl that filled up with the right meow. It'd probably have a posh name, too, though he might cave and let Ariel choose what to call it. Not that he was getting a cat. Well, he was in Geralina's head. It was quite the entertaining picture. The real picture was right in front of her, though, and included an empty bowl on the side that needed icing to be mixed up in it. She stood up and moved around the counter. "How many times has she made you try on her tutu and be ballerinas together?" she asked, as she mixed the powdered sugar with water, grinning into the bowl as she imagined Ariel forcing the tiny tutu onto Dorian's leg and asking him to dance. Geralina had hung it on Ariel's bedroom wall thinking it might be a cute touch. She had always loved to dance herself, and her own childhood bedroom had been a shrine of that. Encouraging a new fan of the activity was never a bad thing, especially if it meant Dorian had to play dress up in it. She didn't expect him to admit it if he had indulged Ariel, but honestly, the tot was smart enough to know how to get what she wanted. She could probably convince her Uncle Julian to wear the thing, too, and from the few times Geralina had met the guy - what a hunk! - she did not see him as the tutu type. She mixed up the icing until it was smooth and the perfect shimmering texture, then she poured it into four separate bowls. They were going to attempt to make some spring animal cakes, but she didn't expect it to go off without a hitch. She pulled out her wand and pointed it at each bowl of icing in turn. The first bowl turned bright yellow, the second pink, the third light brown, and the fourth stayed white. The cakes would be ready to come out of the oven in a few minutes and she needed everything to be ready so it would be easy for Ariel to help with the icing. There were marshmallows to fill in the bodies of little sheep cakes, googly eyes for all of the animals, orange beaks and feet to put on the chicks, and the pink icing was to go over the cakes that had been placed into pig shaped cases. It really couldn't go wrong. Everything was set out, Dorian would handle the oven, and she hoped he would be able to talk Ariel into decorating the cakes calmly without throwing marshmallows all over the house. Admittedly, Geralina would find that fun, but she hadn't come to give Dorian a heart attack, she'd come for a fun catch up. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 1045 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

My promise to you always and forever
Toys Dorian could handle, but pets? He found it challenging enough to care for Ariel and he practically had full time help between Emily and Andre. River had had many friends, several of whom had reached out to Dorian following her death and had maintained an active role in the toddler’s life, but he rarely trusted anyone enough to care for his niece, save the Meadowes, Geralina, and Julian. Even with his work schedule heavily modified, and his insistence that he couldn’t be out of the country for any lengthy missions, Dorian felt as though he wasn’t giving Ariel all of the time she deserved from him. He couldn’t imagine adding an animal into the mix. One more thing to pull focus from Ariel or his work. He simply couldn’t afford that. “I think we’re plenty satisfied playing with Geri’s pets, aren’t we?” His words were directed at Ariel but the message was purely for Geralina. Ariel turned her eyes up at him as he spoke and then smashed the plastic star into the triangle shaped hole on the cube, banging it repeatedly and beginning to sing to herself something unintelligible. “She agrees. That is her agreement song.” He might consider the idea in the future, when Ariel was a bit older and could be trusted not to pull a dog’s ears or a cat’s tail. Possibly.
Dorian pointed to the star shaped hole on Ariel’s toy and Ariel moved the plastic piece there, turning it roughly until she managed to fit it into the hole. She clapped for herself and picked up the crescent piece next. “We’re working on tidying up. Ariel, can you clean up your toys, love?” Dorian pushed her toy basket closer to her, hoping to show her off to Geralina but all plans for bragging were quickly dashed. “No.” Ariel kept on with her toys and Dorian laughed. “That’s what I get for asking.” He kissed the little blonde on the top of her head and followed Geralina back over toward the kitchen, watching as she got the icing ready. “I would be lying if I said she hadn’t asked yet. Fairy ballerinas is her favorite game. She’s been known to insist on wearing her tutu to bed once or twice.” No comment on whether Dorian had fallen asleep in a tutu himself.

A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now Geralina failed to stifle a laugh when Ariel completely ignored Dorian's question, and instead began to sing a made up song in her own little language. It was adorable, and the perfect response. "Are you sure?" she asked with a smirk. "That sounds really similar to the 'I want a kitten' song." There was no such song, but she would gladly make one up and teach it to Ariel if it helped her to bring Dorian around to getting her a pet one day. Maybe when she was a bit older and better at pestering, at the moment it was likely just grabbing, crying, and tugging on clothes until she got what she wanted. As soon as she was coherent enough to learn a cute song and dance about kittens, it would definitely be on the agenda. Geralina would get Dorcas in on it, too. They could steal her away for a few hours, and teach her all the best ways to get what she wanted from any authority figure. Geralina doubted it would end in anything more than a hamster, but it would be adorable, nonetheless. Dorian told her they'd been working on teaching Ariel how to tidy up, but upon his asking, the tot gave a rather determined "no" and carried on playing. Geralina couldn't hold her laughter in any more. "Hey, it's good that she's comfortable telling people when she doesn't want to do something," she said biting her lip as she watched the entertaining scene before her. "You know that she won't get pushed around when she's older." ' Unlike me,' she thought. Geralina was, unfortunately, one of those people that were easily pushed around. Or at least she used to be. She'd gotten a lot better at standing up for herself over the years, but she still found it hard to say no. She admired Ariel for being so sure of herself, and unafraid to speak up. Geralina had always been that child that wouldn't say boo to a goose, and would go along with whatever the other kids wanted to do. Hell, she still went along with what other people wanted, but her one saving grace as an adult was that she had mastered the art of making up excuses to get out of doing things. It was pretty handy, but she did feel guilty for lying to her friends every now and then if she wasn't up for an adventure. Ariel would do just fine, she was sure of it. She was bright and confident as far as Geralina could tell, though she didn't spend that much time with the toddler to know her too well. With Dorian by her side, she'd be just fine. The oven gave a ding, snapping her out of her thoughts, and she pointed at it. "Wanna get the cakes out?" she asked, giving the icing another stir as she tried to picture Ariel asleep in her tutu, like a real sleeping beauty. "Do you wear your tutu to bed, too?" she asked casually, trying to keep a straight face as she waited for Dorian to brave the hot oven and rescue the cakes before they burned or flopped, or whatever it was cakes did when they weren't cooked properly. She only knew burned, she'd never undercooked something in her life. She blamed her mother for that. Evelyn Drake always insisted that if something wasn't burned, you'd get food poisoning, so it was better to be safe than sorry. Geralina had been glad to be able to break that rule when she got her own home for the first time, but she still burned things on purpose whenever her mum came for tea. Merlin forbid she poison her mother. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 652 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

The oven timer dinging was enough of a signal that Dorian was already reaching for the drawer where the oven mitts were kept by the time Geralina asked him to pull the cakes out. “That’s what I am here for,” he said with a chuckle. “Chief Oven Worker and keeper of all things burny.” Slipping the mitt onto his hand, Dorian pulled open the oven door and slid the cake pan to the edge of the rack, adjusting his grip and then pulling the cakes from the oven. Setting the pan on a trivet on the counter, Dorian couldn’t help but take a deep whiff of the heavenly scent of fresh chocolate cake that filled the room. He straightened out the cake pan, aligning it parallel to the counter’s edge for no particular reason other than it was visually pleasing, as Geralina asked more about the ballerina tutus. “A ballerina never reveals his secrets. That is the saying, isn’t it?” He pulled the oven mitt off his hand and set it on the counter, a bit more haphazardly placed than the perfectly perpendicular cake pan. Finding a fork, Dorian poked one of the center cakes with the long prongs and pulled it straight out, inspecting to see whether any cake batter remained uncooked. All seemed well, so Dorian turned the dial on the oven to off, and moved to the sink to wash the fork he’d just soiled.

A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now "That needs to go on an oven mitt," Geralina said thoughtfully. Maybe she could sew the quote on to one and give it to him for Christmas, for he was indeed Chief Oven Worker and Keeper of all things burny. He was chief everything, really, but Tersha would kill her if she discovered Geralina had given that title to someone else. Tersha had dubbed herself the Queen of Everything when they were in school, and no one had ever challenged the title successfully as far as Geralina was aware. Maybe Dorian would win, or maybe there was room for a King of Everything, but she got the impression that Tersha made Dorian want to run for the hills and never look back. She really wasn't that bad once you got to know her. Geralina found her quite refreshing. Sure, Tersha was highly insulting with her words and lack of conscience, but honestly, she was a wonderful friend and a lot of fun. Dorian would do well to give her more of a chance, but Geralina was the last person who would push that. Dorian placed the hot tray on the counter just so, and Geralina's grin was bright as he practically admitted to sleeping in a tutu for his niece. "Only a true ballerina would know that saying," she teased, giving him a knowing look. She glanced down at the tray of cakes. The round ones all looked fine, some of them a tiny bit oval, but not too bad. The pig shaped ones, however, now looked more like elephants. The noses has stretched out like trunks, and she chewed on her bottom lip in disappointment. Perhaps they'd look better once they were decorated. Ariel could smother them in pink icing and they'd look much better. "Okay, Ariel can decorate the piggies, I'll do sheep, and do you wanna try chicks?" she asked, blue eyes glancing up at Dorian with hope. She'd mess chicks up spectacularly, they required detail, beaks and whatever else. Sheep would be easy, but if he wanted to swap, she wouldn't say anything, she'd just quietly butcher the chicks and get on with it. She put the pink icing in the middle of the counter, kept the white in front of her next to the marshmallows, and subtly nudged the yellow icing closer to Dorian. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 422 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

My promise to you always and forever
His secret had been found out. Dorian had, in fact, fallen asleep on more than one occasion still donning the tutu his niece had insisted he wear while they played. At least he was able to soothe his manly ego with the knowledge that he had successfully negotiated the toddler into a bath on both occasions, with the contingency that she be allowed to put her tutu back on as part of her pyjamas. It was a parenting win if there ever was one. A stubborn toddler was far more stringent a negotiator than any dark wizard Dorian had faced in the line of duty.
Icing assignments were being doled out and Dorian nodded, agreeing to work on the chicks while the ladies had the easier cake tasks. “This is outside of my scope of practice as the Chief Oven Worker, but if you insist.” He enjoyed spending time with Geralina. She was a kind and patient woman, smart as a whip and the most gentle soul you would ever meet. Ariel would have a good role model in Geralina, it would counter-balance the Dorcas affect well, he hoped.
Dorian headed back into the lounge and plucked Ariel from the floor, enticing her away from her toy (she’d since left the shape sorter and had moved on to a little piano that made metallic tones when the keys were struck) with promises of cake and icing. “Auntie Geri has some yummy pink frosting for you.” With a wave of his wand, Ariel’s highchair floated from the dining table over to the kitchen where Dorian directed it to sit next to the counter they would be working from. He set the toddler in her chair and put a large bib around her neck, hoping to keep some of the mess off her clothes though not having high hopes at all.
Ever the perfectionist, Dorian managed to ice only one cake by the time Geralina was nearly halfway through her sheep. It didn’t look like much of a chick, more a yellow blob with an orange triangle jutting out of its head like a deranged unicorn. This was not Dorian’s finest moment but a quick glance at Ariel made the Auror smile. She was covered in frosting and munching on a half-eaten pig cake. With her skin tinged pink and her beautiful blonde curls, she looked very much like Miss Piggy. Dorian laughed and grabbed a towel to wipe the frosting away from her eyes. “I’m never going to get her to bed after all this sugar. You’ll have to take her,” he teased Geralina.

A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now Grey-blue eyes kept subtly peeping to the side to check on Dorian's progress as she made her sheep cakes, and Geralina retained a gentle smile through the whole process. She had made seven sheep by the time Dorian had finished his first chick. Even Ariel was having better luck. She'd used her spoon to dump copious amounts of pink icing all over the cakes that she'd been given to decorate, and then dumped the rest of her icing all over herself. It must have tasted delicious, because she looked impossibly pleased with herself, and kept shoving more fistfuls into her mouth. Geralina finished up the last sheep and watched with a grin as Dorian wiped pink frosting out of Ariel's eyes. The tot was destroyed in sugary stickiness, and it was adorable. Of course, it was probably more adorable because Geralina wasn't the one who had to clean it off, but still. Dorian joked that Geralina would have to take Ariel since she'd be hyper, and Geralina only raised a brow. She picked up the little bag of marshmallows she'd been working with and sprinkled some onto the tray of Ariel's highchair. "Do you want some clouds, sweetie?" she asked, getting a big smile in response as Ariel grabbed a fistful of white fluff and had a taste. "There's no such thing as too much sugar," she told Dorian, giving him a playful smile. She popped a marshmallow into her mouth and held another one up, ready to throw it into Dorian's mouth if he'd play along. "I'll take her though. I'll bring her back in about a month. Catch." She tossed the marshmallow into the air. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert words: 305 notes: <3 outfit: Comfy for cake! template by izzy [googlefont="Lovers Quarrel"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

My promise to you always and forever
More sugar was not what Ariel needed at that moment, but Merlin’s beard if Dorian could successfully manage to refuse his niece anything she wanted. Had he tried, he would have been ridden with guilt that he caused her any heartache in the slightest, knowing she was already missing out on so much with her parents being gone. Thinking of River always made Dorian feel wretched, but purposely ignoring his sister’s existence or death made him feel worse. There was no winning. Ariel shoved marshmallows into her mouth with icing covered, chubby little fingers and Geralina played along with the idea of babysitting. “One month?” he asked skeptically. “I believe the ‘clouds’ have pushed it to two.” Geralina tossed a marshmallow in his direction and Dorian moved to catch it in his mouth. He missed. The marshmallow smacked him in the forehead and fell to his chest where he managed to catch it against his shirt before it tumbled to the ground. “I will need to practice that.”
Cakes frosted to varying degrees of success and the kitchen utterly destroyed, Dorian carried Ariel to the bathroom for a bath, insisting Geralina not bother with tidying up. She was too polite and would insist in helping out regardless, so he gave her a stern, Auror-like glare as he cautioned her against it before disappearing into the bathroom. Sleep came surprisingly early for the toddler and Dorian was relieved to have a moment to tidy things up before sitting in the back garden with a bottle of wine, tossing a tennis ball to Geralina’s pup as they discussed life and literature.
