I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
A small blond baby wiggling and smiling up from his cot, clothed in a pale blue with white dragons and matching booties. It was the most wonderful scene she could possibly imagine and yet Narcissa felt a cool disconnect from it, as if she were looking at the child from afar. Turning the robes over in her hand, she could practically feel the weight of the little one in them. She would cuddle him and hold him close to her chest. He would be warm and make gentle noises like a little church mouse, his chubby arms and legs wiggling freely with piercing blue eyes looking up at her. He would have Lucius’ eyes, she had decided that with their first baby too, and the second, then no more until Carina. They might have had the most beautiful children, dressed in the most adorable little outfits such as the one she held now, were it not for her poisonous body.
Her name being called, though gentle in tone, startled her. Narcissa gave a small jump, her hand rushing instinctively to her stomach as her heartbeat quickened. She gave a sharp turn of her head toward the voice and immediately felt a rush of embarrassment joining the adrenaline. “Rabastan” she said with a breathy tone that mirrored her startled relief. “I wasn’t expecting…”
The wizard’s eyes fell on the infant robes she still held in her hand and Narcissa’s gaze followed. “I’m not sure,” she said softly, then quickly shook her head and straightened herself up, lifting her chin as she spoke next. “I’m not sure why it attracted me, I mean. Perhaps the glitter, you know how witches can be.” She gave the tiny robes a little stroke to smooth out and creases her handling of it may have created, then hung it back on the display and adjusted it neatly on the little hanger so it hung as nicely as it had when it had first caught her eye. Taking a deep breath as she smiled, Narcissa shook loose the last traces of her daydreams.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
The healer was optimistic about her condition this time around, but he’d been so with Carina as well, so Narcissa didn’t trust it. Lucius, true to form, had offered the healer a private contract to be available night and day, whenever Cissa needed him. There would be no family holidays or special events he couldn’t excuse himself from. The man had agreed to be at their beck and call and Narcissa was taking full advantage. She was two months along but already beginning to show. Her body was well used to the early stages of pregnancy by now, but this little one had made it further than some of her others. It was a cause for hope, the healer had informed her, but Cissa still wasn’t sure. She was already seeing the man every other week and his only concern thus far was that Narcissa was causing herself undue stress in worrying so much, and it was not healthy for the baby. She needed to relax. That was simple enough for him to say, seeing as how he would never understand the anguish of being a childless mother several times over and having to feel the little love inside literally being ripped from your toxic body. He couldn’t possibly understand, but she agreed to his advice regardless and left his office with a blank expression on her face.
She’d been approved for travel by Floo Network, though it was advised she refrained from apparition when at all possible and definitely not at all in the third trimester. Cissa doubted her new little love would last that long. Still, the safest means of travel was flying carriage and as the Malfoys had their own private carriage, it was Narcissa’s mode of choice. The carriage landed gently on the busy muggle street, completely unnoticed as the ignorant waifs strolled past, busying themselves with their own shopping and conversations. Narcissa paid them no mind except for her turned up nose as she passed them by and entered the Leaky Cauldron. The dark pub was noisy as it always was, but she spent very little time inside, moving straight on through to the back alley where she tapped her wand on a series of bricks. An archway opened before her and the bustling sounds of Diagon Alley sprang to life.
Shop after shop, Cissa passed them all at a leisurely pace, having a set destination in mind but feeling in no rush to return home straight away. Lucius was working today and she would rather be around strangers than be alone with her depressive thoughts and valid worries. Stopping at one of the little carts that lined the crooked alley, Cissa purchased herself a new necklace, a gold chain with a ruby pendant, a rune for happiness carved into it discretely. The merchant wrapped it in tissue paper and plopped it gingerly into a tiny bag, which Cissa held on her wrist like a purse as she continued on to her ultimate destination. Twilfitt and Tattings had a fine assortment of high-end clothing and Narcissa hoped a new dress would perk her spirits up a bit. She strolled through the shop, admiring a cloak here and robes there before becoming distracted by the most adorable tiny set of infant robes with matching booties that was peeking out from the child’s section as she passed. Cissa held the small outfit in her hands. Pale blue with patterned white dragons breathing glittering fire all across the fabric. The booties had tiny blue ribbons running around the ankles. She was practically entranced by the ensemble, completely losing herself as she turned it over in her hands, inspecting the stitching and beginning to daydream about what could be.

Narcissa leaned her head into her husband as he wrapped an arm around her and kissed the top of her head. She wasn’t sure what to say next, or if she even needed to say anything at all. Usually a great conversationalist, Narcissa was rendered mute by the overwhelming number of emotions that were all bubbling up to the surface. She had done so well since leaving the healer’s office. She had managed to keep herself composed while she was in public, choosing to call a carriage instead of apparating home as she normally would have done for fear of hurting the creature inside her that she wasn’t even sure if she wanted. She felt ashamed for thinking of this pregnancy as anything but a blessing, and for crying as she announced the news to her beloved. This was not the way she had been raised to behave, and had her father witnessed her pathetic show he would have snapped at her. Her mum would have been gentler while still reinforcing her father’s opinion. Narcissa turned his face in toward Lucius’ shirt, hiding her shame from the invisible audience of judging family and society she had created in her head.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
It was probably only a few seconds but the silence from her husband felt like an eternity had passed before he finally spoke. Cissa allowed him to take her hand in his and kiss the back. Ever the romantic. His reaction was completely forgivable as it had been something of the same when it was her turn to receiving the shocking news. The healer, having known of Cissa and Lucius’ troubles, was cautious as he informed her but there was still an air of joy in the man’s tone that made Narcissa initial thoughts turn her stomach. For years she’d dreamed of being a mother and yet as the news was shared with her the only thing going through her mind was ‘no, no, no, no, no.’ The healer was wrong, she was certain of it, but after forcing him to check the results again, Narcissa fell silent.
Congratulations were hardly in order. It felt as though her beloved was congratulating her impending death because it seemed the only outcome in their current situation. She was bound to loose this child just as she had lost all the ones before and, unable to cope, Narcissa would end herself. The alternative, which seemed almost unspeakable for a witch of her standing with aspirations of motherhood since the age of five, would certainly end with Lucius divorcing her and that too would lead Narcissa to take her life, because how could he possibly stay with her if she chose to abort his child? There was no outcome from this situation that warranted congratulatory words.
Her free hand wiped the tears from her cheek, her head still tilted toward the floor. How was she feeling? There was no possible way to answer such a question. “I-” The tears continued slowly and she sniffled as she wiped them away yet again. “I don’t- I-” Terrified. Nauseous. Devastated. Confused. Angry. Worried. Completely overwhelmed. How to pick just one when she felt literally every emotion under the sun except joy. “Scared,” she admitted finally, her voice barely more than a whisper. “I’m so scared, Lucius.”

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Horrible thoughts swirled in her head as Lucius attempted and failed to make sense of what she was saying. Losing Carina had very nearly killed Narcissa, though not in the literal sense, at least not directly. They had had such a rough go of it since the beginning. Miscarriage after miscarriage. Carina was their little beacon of hope. She had made it so far and Narcissa truly thought the worst of it was over. They were finally going to be a complete family, the perfect little family she had always dreamed of. Lucius, the love of her life, and their child, the light of her world. And then suddenly that light was extinguished and Narcissa felt cold and alone. Stepping off the balcony of her bed chambers was not a far off thought and were it not for Lucius’ never ending devotion Narcissa might have just gone through with it. Spending eternity with her child was far more preferable than the hell Carina’s absence had left her in but she simply couldn’t leave her husband. His patience brought her back to the light and she was finally beginning to feel something of herself again. This new child growing inside her womb would surely face the same fate as all of her previous children and Narcissa knew that Lucius’ love would not be enough to keep her here if she suffered another loss of that magnitude.
Her words were all very clear to Narcissa, but Lucius’ confusion only created chaos in her head. She looked at him with an almost blank expression for a few seconds, with the exception of the tears rolling down her cheeks, streaking her makeup. Her hand moved to her stomach. Eyes turning to her lap, she quietly said, “I’m pregnant.” And then she waited, the silence creating a deafening noise inside her ears.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Expressions of worry and concern, for whom she didn’t know, crossed Lucius’ handsome face. Narcissa felt her stomach lurch, not for the first time today. After all they had been through in their relatively short time together, it was unfair of the fates to place this on them now when they were still regaining each other’s trust and affections. There were moments, though she tried to hide them, that Lucius’ touch still burned. That his voice still caused her pain, despite the words only being ones of affection and husbandly duty. His kiss was different though. It had a way of mending her wounds and when his lips pressed against her skin, his tongue trailed over her body, she felt heavenly and whole again. Those dangers were what brought them to this point this evening, and Narcissa waited until Lucius was seated before she began.
Closing the small gap between their bodies, Narcissa scooted closer on the sofa until their thighs touched. Her hands in his, she looked up into his warm, blue eyes and felt a swell of emotion rise up in her. “I’ve been to see the healer,” she started, slowly and precise were her words as she managed to keep her confidence up long enough to get the complete sentence out. Heart thumping wildly inside her chest, Cissa fell silent, working up the courage to continue. Her hands squeezed his tightly and her gaze fell to her lap. “I’m so scared, Lucius.” Her voice cracked as she admitted the thing that had been plaguing her since leaving the healer’s office. “I don’t know if I can do it all again.”
Her gaze was set steady on her dressing gown, the sheer fabric doing nothing to hide her thin legs and the faint lines that had developed on her thighs as their daughter had grown inside of her. Those little lines and a marble stone were all that Narcissa had left of Carina. What if this child followed his sister’s example? What if Narcissa couldn’t bring him to term? The odds were not in their favor. It was enough to cause Narcissa to think the darkest of thoughts, to ask questions a good pureblooded wife would never ask her healer. She had longed to be a mother ever since she was a little girl but the thoughts her anxiety were creating threw her entire life’s plan out the window. Lucius would be furious if he ever found out but how could Cissa not confide in the one person that had never even considered betraying her trust? “He’s due in June, if he makes it.” Finally, Narcissa lifted her eyes, tears gently falling down her face, highlighting her cheekbones and making her blue eyes sparkle with a mesmerizing sadness. “If we want him.”

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
His fear might have been irrational if she hadn’t felt completely fragile for the last few hours. She’d already been dealt a shattering blow today, anything more from her husband would completely ruin her. Narcissa didn’t know how to respond to his compliments, the smile she gave him bringing liquid to pool at her eyes. “Sweetheart…” her voice cracked, too full of emotion, relief and anxieties mingling. He was here now, he was home and would soothe her rattled nerves. Narcissa cleared her throat and straightened herself up on the sofa. Leaning forward, she set the cup of cold tea on the coffee table. The porcelain clinked gently, the sound hanging in the air. “Sit with me,” she asked him, a hint of pleading in her voice. Cissa’s hand reached up and touched his. He was warm, despite having been in the cool October air just moments before now. She wanted to melt into him and ignore all her worries, leaving them for another day. That could have been so easy to do, and Lucius would have been none the wiser. The hint of emotion she’d shown him thus far could easily be explained away. Memories of their daughter, her sister, the dozens of friends and family already lost to this war. Narcissa was not without a plethora of excuses for her shaken nerves but she couldn’t- she wouldn’t let Lucius live in the dark. As much as he was her rock, Narcissa knew too that she was his. Those early months in the year had been trying for both of them. She had recognized it more as she stepped out of herself and returned to him. He’d grown thinner, older. Her pain had aged him. Could she give him the world to repay what she had stolen from him, she would.

Okay, time to properly plot Narcissa and I'l throw in Ollie for good measure. XD Jonathan James Townsend & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- He's a few years younger and a muggleborn, so not someone Cissa would ever be seen with, but he was in Slytherin house so his face would look familiar to her. Their history is minimal but I have no clue what he'd think of her. Livia Eleanor Grace Burke & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- Cissa is pals with Liv's older sister Lyra Ophelia Genevieve Burke but Lilith A. C. Lestrange thinks poorly of Cissa (because she's a bitch). Liv doesn't seem disuaded by her eldest sister's opinion of people, for the most part, so I think these two would get on. Cissa's older by a few years but I'd like to think she and Lyra allowed Liv to hang around with them in school. Cissa pushed people away after the miscarriage and completely stopped speaking to anyone outside of her family for several months, which undoubtedly put a strain on her relationships. Though it wasn't formally announced, Cissa is aware that everyone knows she's lost a baby, though they don't all know about the earlier ones that didn't make it as far as little Corina. They'd have been planning a baby shower for her at one point, Liv was obviously invited, but it never happened. Finley Charles Avery & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- These two met well before they started at Hogwarts, their families running in similar social circles. They were polite and friendly though never close. Now that Fin works with her hubby, Lucius, Cissa's probably seeing a bit more of him around. She makes sure the waitstaff are always prompt with their drinks and hors d'oeuvres so there is no interrupting when the men have business to attend to. He'd be at the top of the guest list for one of Cissa's soirees. Evangeline Lucille Nott & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- Same age, house, and status; these two are probably something of frenemies. Maybe they had phases in school where they were close and then wouldn't speak to one another for months on end? I think Evie has bad mouthed Cissa in a thread somewhere, so they can't be too close and we could even make them rivals if you'd like, but Evie is cousins with her hubby so they will face-to-face at times and will have to play nice. Christopher Erebus Devereaux & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- She always thought he was cute but he wasn't very manly in her eyes, so Cissa never had any romantic interest in him growing up. He was rather meek and far too quiet. Cissa isn't overtly outgoing either, but something about the extent of his reserved nature always made Cissa think of him as less than, despite his perceived blood purity and his family's moderate wealth. River Aurora Blackthorne & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- Friends since school, River was one of the few people who knew Cissa was pregnant (prior to Corina) because they would have been pregnant about the same time, though Cissa lost the baby early on. Cissa pulled away from River after that, because River got to keep her baby, but when she died Cissa attended the funeral and asked about River's baby. She's since asked Evangeline Lucille Nott about Ariel, knowing Ariel's uncle and caretaker work at the Ministry together in some capacity. Julian Astraeus Blackthorne & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- I think they got on well as children, he would probably have seen her just as one of River's friends and not bothered with her much. Since he was school mates with Lucius, there's a connection there as well. She noted his absence at River's funeral. Rabastan Aramis Lestrange & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- Rabastan's a strange relationship for Cissa. He was the brother-in-law to her sister but they all seemed to get on well, especially in the early years. Narcissa stays in touch with Rodolphus, as he has custody of her niece after Bella's death and while she blames Roddy for Bella's death indirectly, she maintains that polite relationship because of the familial connection. Rabastan doesn't have to be included in that connection, but he is good friends with her husband so she would see him regularly (especially now that she's not isolating herself as much anymore). Bellatrix Druella Lestrange & Narcissa Astrid Malfoy -- Aside from her parents, Bella was the only person Cissa would speak with after she lost Corina. It was very evident that Bella was taking her own path in life and going farther down the rabbit hole of dark arts than anyone Narcissa had known, but she loved her sister dearly. Bella's lack of affection for her own daughter was gut wrenching, but Narcissa had her own issues with Aurora, growing jealous of the little girl for existing when none of her children had ever taken a single breath. With Bella gone now, Narcissa knows that Aurora will need a proper role model as a lady of wealth and status, so she is attempting to take the girl under her wing and provide what Bella could/would not but she looks so much like her mother that it makes it difficult knowing Bella isn't around anymore. Jeebus..... that's just Cissa....now for Ollie Echo Arista Everwood & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- He sees her as his sisters' smokin' hot friend. He enjoys spending time with her, though its mostly been in a group capacity thus far, and when he heard she'd made a professional team straight out of Hogwarts, Ollie was beyond excited for her. Obviously they need to fall in love and have all sorts of adorable blonde quarter-vampire babies! Jonathan James Townsend & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- Friends in school and Ollie thought he was the epitome of cool. It didn't matter that Johnny was younger than him (only by a year), the guy was just cool. Now that Johnny's a vet, Ollie insists Christopher Erebus Devereaux change Azreal's regular vet to support Johnny. Livia Eleanor Grace Burke & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- Same year and rival houses, but she is a hot blonde and Ollie totally had a crush on her. Finley Charles Avery & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- What a dick. They know each other and were probably forced to partner up a handful of times while in school, but Ollie can't stand the guy. It's bad enough he hangs around Euphadora Rose Parkinson like he's her sodding shadow. Ollie only goes to Fin's club because Dora works there and the drinks are good, the music is good, and well okay it's a pretty brilliant nightclub but Fin's a dick. Evangeline Lucille Nott & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- friend of a friend sort of deal here. They know of each other but that's about it unless you have other plans. Christopher Erebus Devereaux & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- Kit is Ollie's idol. He has always looked up to his big brother and totally forced his way into Kit's house after Hogwarts, threw his trunk on the guest bed and claimed it as his own. He's always trying to get Kit out of his shell but he also loved him just the way he is. Ollie knows Dora's got a bit of a crush on Kit, and will sometimes use it to his advantage (as he did at New Years when he convinced Kit to go to the club with him and then pawned him off on Dora so he could flirt with pretty girls) but will also play the blocker and interject himself into a situation if Kit looks too uncomfortable or Dora looks like she's going to pounce. He has excellent timing when it comes to cock blocking. Tristan Jude Dearborn & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- They met through the Order but due to the age difference, they were never that close. Ollie thought Tristan was kind of a bad ass and he was gutted when he heard the news that Tristan had been murdered. Geralina Amara Drake & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- Super lovely witch, pretty hot but not really Ollie's type, plus she's like seven years older than him so that would be weird. They met through the Order and he always asks about what books she's reading and he takes on her recommendations whenever he has the time. Tessa Nicole Abbott & Oliver Osiris Devereaux -- His favorite Leaky Cauldron bartender Ollie was suuuuuuuper awkward and asked her if she was pregnant, to which someone else in his party elbowed him roughly in the side and he apologized. He claims it's all okay because she turned out to actually be pregnant but she wasn't too far along at the time and he really just stuck his foot in his mouth. Now he asks about the baby whenever he's in the Leaky and he even got her a golden snitch plush rattle and told her to make sure the baby grows up a quidditch fan.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Progress had been slow going, but Narcissa was determined to make the marriage work. She loved Lucius with all her heart but there were times when she simply couldn’t bring herself to be what she once had been. Not with him, not with anyone. When those moments came, she would retreat to the isolation of her studio, painting memories and dreams and things that might never be. Lucius had been understanding, he’d been patient and waited for her. At the start of the year they were sleeping apart, she painted while he worked, they exchanged few in any words. It was better now. She was better. They were better.
Coming home had never felt so terrifying. Narcissa dropped her handbag and shopping bags on the sofa as she passed through the lounge, knowing Dobby would take proper care of her belongings without instruction. She had purchased a dress in anticipation of her birthday celebrations next week, and though she did not know what Lucius might have been planning, she was expecting something spectacular. Her heels clicked loudly on the marble floor as she followed the long corridor into the kitchen. It was empty. Tea was still several hours hour, and Lucius wouldn’t be home for another hour at least. An hour – that was how long she had to keep herself together. Just an hour or so. Her hands shook as she filled the kettle with water and set in on the stove, walking away before she realized she’d forgotten to turn on the burner. Opening the cupboard, Narcissa moved the contents about, searching for a box of tea bags but not finding the ones she was wanting. “Dobby,” she called, her voice cracking with emotion. “Dobby!” The elf appeared and bowed low to the ground. “Find the ginger tea.” Narcissa didn’t look at the creature for long, she was soon staring intently at her hands as she rung them in front of her lap. Dobby snapped into action, finding the tea bags as requested and taking over the entirety of the task.
The hands of the clock moved slowly. At one point, Narcissa swore they were moving backwards! Time did as it always had and ticked away until finally an hour had passed. She had made it, but Lucius was yet to arrive. She sat in her finest dressing gown, the remainder of her tea having gone cold but she kept it close, holding the cup in her hands simply to have something to do. She possibly looked a sight, wearing her nightclothes before the sun had even gone down, but appearances were the last thing on Narcissa’s mind. Sitting in the lounge, her hands and cuppa in her lap, she waited quietly for her faithful husband.

The air was chilled around her and she felt vulnerable beyond measure as her body fell into the mattress beside her husband. Narcissa bit down harder on her lower lip as her head rested on the pillow. The mattress shifted and she could feel Lucius moving closer towards her. It only took a second but the anticipation of the contact he would deliver seemed to go on for ages. It was a slow burn as Narcissa very clearly heard every shift of his muscles and rustling of their silk sheets until finally the coolness against her skin was alleviated and instead replaced with a warmth that was all too familiar. Cissa’s eyes squeezed shut as her mouth fell open, inhaling a silent, ragged breath. A chill washed over her arms and down her legs making her toes curl and slide under the blanket.
Lucius’ arm under her neck was a support she had not realized she’d been missing all these months. Her hands moved to grasp his almost instinctively, both of her tiny hands enveloping his large one. She let out a whispered breath as she relaxed into her husband’s chest, and as she felt his free arm fall gently over her side, his hand resting on her flat, imperfect stomach, Cissa turned her face in toward her pillow and smothered a pathetic whimper.
She was certain Lucius could hear her heart thumping madly in her chest. It banged against her ears like a warning signal but this time she didn’t run away. She didn’t leave him to the darkness like she had so often retreated herself. There was no door being shut in his face, and no melodic footsteps dissipating into cold night’s air. Instead, Narcissa clung to her husband’s hand, curling herself further into the curve of his body, and ignored the emptiness she felt as his hand brushed against the inhospitable home she had created for all their deceased children.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Her name on his lips was like fire spreading through her chest; it was warm and a tiny bit frightening. How long had it been since she’d said his name aloud? Several weeks, at least. She had no need to specify who she was speaking of on the rare occasions she spoke with her mother or sister about anything. Lucius was simply “he” and the baby, Carina, was “she”. When she spoke, they were the only topics of conversation. Sometimes Narcissa simply listened, especially as Bella lamented that Rodolphus couldn’t hold a candle to Lucius as far as doting husbands were concerned, but Cissa hadn’t much to say on that subject. Comparisons such as that one only led to tears and Bellatrix had only tried to cheer her up in such a fashion once or twice. She had always been a quick learner, her older sister.
Blue eyes stared down at the bleary face of the man she loved. She did love him, more than anything in the world. He was her only light in the darkness that had swallowed their fragile family and although it hurt her, she crept forward. Pressing her teeth into her lower lip to stave off a terrified quiver, Narcissa found his hand and leaned over to place her hand on it. Curling her fingers, she tightened her grip, asking silently for his strength. She wanted so badly to be with him again. She felt weakened in his presence. Narcissa closed her eyes and breathed deeply. A single tear rolled down her cheek. Anxious energy swelled in her chest. Her body was telling her to run, to retreat to the safety of her claimed chamber but instead she lifted her leg and climbed into the bed beside him.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
A shred of anxiety caused her heart to beat faster as Lucius neared. It was distracting, her heartbeat, and though her doleful eyes kept fixed on her husband, on the thin crinkle above his brow that expressed his worries that she would reject him yet again, her focus was on the swelling sensation in her chest. He hovered near her cheek. His breath was warm and somehow both comforting and discomforting simultaneously. Eyelashes fluttering, Narcissa closed her eyes gently, trying in vain to attend to her husband more so than her broken heart. It was a daunting task. She frequently failed. But she didn’t pull away from him. She succeeded in that much. His lips on her skin was like electricity, zapping her in the precise spot where their bodies made contact. It stung but she knew it was all in her mind, so she didn’t flinch. The pain was her punishment for being unfit to be a mother and she would take it. She would do as her mother instructed her to do and pretend that she was better.
Cissa truly intended to say something, anything, to keep him near her longer, but she was weak and as his lips left her sallow cheek and he pulled away from her, Narcissa could only look to the floor before taking a step backwards and slowly moving her hand to the knob. She didn’t look at him as she shut the door. She couldn’t look at him. He was too beautiful and too pure to watch as she cut off a little bit more of the hope he still held in his eyes. Maybe tonight was the night that she squashed it completely. Perhaps this was their last goodnight. Cissa didn’t know, as she kept her eyes fixed on the ground as the shut out the light from the hallway and stood in the darkness of her depression. She felt a quiver in her chest as the need to cry surfaced again but there were still no tears to be shed and instead, Narcissa turned and made her way into the en suite.
Stripped of her paint splattered clothes, Narcissa stood beneath the spray of the shower, letting the water fall over her face. Colors streaked down her arms and pooled in a swirling grey-brown mess at her feet before slowly disappearing in the drain. There wasn’t much paint to be washed away, though what had settled into her hair had yet to be washed out. Soon, there was no reason to be standing in the shower any longer but the cold water in her skin stung and she used the shock of it to talk herself into her next steps. Hair still damp and her face free of any makeup, smudged or otherwise, Narcissa wrapped herself in her robe and returned to the bedroom she had claimed as her own. It wasn’t her bedroom and although she was terrified of what she was about to do, Narcissa stepped out into the hallway and made a slow but determined trek to where Lucius was unwittingly waiting for her. She didn’t knock but instead pushed open the door slowly and stepped into the room. The carpet was soft beneath her bare feet as she moved closer to the bed. She froze at the side of the bed, unable to move any closer but unwilling to go back the way she had come.

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
In the early days of her self-imposed isolation, Lucius would knock and the door would go unanswered. She could hear him speak through the wood, telling her he loved her and wishing she would come back to bed. It was a long while before she could bring herself to open the door when he came each night. What he must have thought of her, of her cruelty towards him, was nothing more than her inability to cope with what was clearly not meant to be, but nevertheless she loved her husband and so after months of being unable to cross the room and open the door to him, Narcissa finally made a small step forward. She would turn the knob and pull the heavy door in towards her and stand there as Lucius tried to break through to her, but his efforts hurt too much for her to speak. She would stand there silently, sometimes still weeping, as Lucius kissed her cheek and bid her goodnight. They had come to a place where Narcissa could once again bear to look at her husband, the man she had let down time and time again, but she couldn’t move past her grief to a point where she could speak to him. She was stuck and unsure of how to deal with what was left of their lives.
Cygnus and Druella had been by only a few days ago to check in on their youngest daughter, but Narcissa’s father had never been one for dealing with emotional matters and had yelled at Narcissa for continuing to mope, as he called it, long after the child’s funeral. This tactic did not fair well with the fragile witch and Cygnus was ordered out of the room by his wife in a way that only a wife could order Cygnus Black around. Druella, though tenderness was not her forte, took a softer approach. Cissa confided that she felt she was losing Lucius to her depression but his touch only reminded her of their lost children and the pain she had caused their family.
Their children had all died inside of her. She was toxic. She was cursed.
Narcissa would never feel the joys of holding her sweet child in her arms. She would never know the strange sensation of nursing her infant, or teaching their baby to walk, or watching anxiously from the ground as their child kicked off on a broom for the first time. Every soft touch of Lucius’ hand or warmth of his lips on her skin was a painful reminder that not only had Merlin deemed her unfit to be a mother, but she had also unwittingly managed to murder her children simply by being the vessel in which they should have entered this world. How could she speak to her husband knowing she had single-handedly destroyed their family? She couldn’t, but Druella didn’t accept that as an answer. She encouraged her daughter to move toward their old life, even if it hurt. She had raised her children to withstand the pains of being a woman in a man’s world, surely Narcissa could manage the pains of faking harmony for the sake of her marriage. What woman didn’t, after all?
Our bedroom. It felt as though Lucius had chosen his words carefully, tonight just as every night before it. The room she was calling hers now was not her bedroom. Her place was with her husband. She knew it was and yet every night before this one when he explained he was retiring to “our bedroom” she nodded in acknowledgement and shut the door, separating them physically and emotionally. Their love wouldn’t survive this. Narcissa wouldn’t survive this.
Tired eyes looked up at the kind face of the man she had loved since she was a girl. She noted the sliver of hope that had been slowly diminishing from his face as she looked at him. Was there any hope left in his eyes? How long before Lucius stopped saying goodnight altogether? How long before he decided she wasn’t worth the trouble? The questions only helped Narcissa to sink further into her depression and had there been any way for her exhausted eyes to produce a tear she would have collapsed at his feet sobbing. Instead, she nodded solemnly. “Goodnight.”

I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
Narcissa hadn’t only lost a child. Carina had come the farthest of all of her children, growing inside her mummy’s belly for five months before whatever curse had been placed upon them finally took their sweet baby girl, but Carina was not the first, just the strongest. The miscarriages were harder on Narcissa than they appeared for Lucius. He was distraught over their struggles, clearly, but the toll they took on the blonde beauty were exceedingly worse. In losing Carina, Narcissa lost more than her child; she lost her husband and her marriage.
There were limited outlets for her grief. At first, sobbing day in and day out was the only thing she could do, hardly pausing to eat and only truly stopping while she slept, having cried herself to sleep of course. Lucius’ gentle touch had become a painful reminder of what they had lost, and so even the comfort of her husband’s arms was no comfort at all. After the tears ran dry and she had stared at the wallpaper for hours on end, there was only one thing left for her to do in her solitude and despair; paint.
A studio had been one of their requirements when finding a suitable place live, one of their first acts as a married couple. Narcissa had always found painting a way to release her emotions, whichever ones were bubbling at the surface at the time, and Lucius had made sure she had a proper place to release her creativity. Her studio had once been something of an oasis for her, but it had recently become a prison. She felt trapped by her own emotions and the only way to let out the grief was to paint her way out of the imaginary cell she had built around her. The older pieces, often bright and elegant, were hung around the walls on display but they were overshadowed and outnumbered by her more recent works which took on a much more somber tone.
For three days she had been working on this piece; a canal surrounded by buildings. The brushwork was more violent that she had been trained to use, and the colors more muted and heavily influenced by the night. Anyone familiar with the city of Venice would easily recognize the landscape Narcissa was painting but the precise location held a significance she had not intended upon first picking up her brush. Lucius had taken her to Venice to celebrate their engagement and as they floated down the canal in a captained gondola they began to plan their future together. They were planning their family.
The painting was not yet complete but the hour was growing late and her body had begun to ache from the weight of her sorrow. In silence she returned to her chambers, one of the many guestrooms in the manor. The thought of sleeping in the bed where Carina had been conceived had been too difficult for Narcissa, and after they buried their daughter the childless mother retreated to the safety of a neutral space. More than four months had passed in this room, each night she held herself in the dark and stared with her eyes unfixed in the blackness. As the weather outside grew warmer, the nights grew colder alone in her isolation.
Sitting on the tufted bench at the foot of the bed, Naricssa buried her face in her hands. There were no tears at this moment but a heavy sorrow pulled at her chest as she leaned forward into the weight of her own arms. Her desolation was interrupted by a knock at the door. There was no need to ask who had come to see her, her heart had been beating more rapidly as the time grew near and it had finally arrived. Lucius was bidding her goodnight, as he did every night, and she both loved and loathed the ritual.
Her thin frame felt like it was weighted down with a million anchors as she pulled herself to her feet and crossed the room to the tall, ornate door that separated her from the love of her life. Turning the knob slowly, Narcissa pulled the door toward her and let the light from the hall stream into her darkened room. Lucius, flooded by a soft white glow, looked like an angel and the sight made her want to burst into tears on the spot but she had shed everything she could earlier that day. Nothing was left for him but wide eyes, her mascara betraying her secrets from hours earlier. Her hair which had been delicately curled this morning had gone flat, flecks of grey paint clinging to the honey blonde locks. She looked up into his heavenly face saying nothing with her mouth but everything with her eyes.
