Aurora held her arms out over her lap, allowing the baby to just rest atop them without much effort. She perceived that she was doing an excellent job of caring for the baby and she smiled happily, quite proud of herself. Her lap wiggled as Aurora swung her legs back and forth, not hard enough to jostle the child in her arms but enough that any of the adults in the room could see was beyond pleased at the event. “Hi baby,” she said in a whisper for the umpteenth time, followed again by variations of “you’re so little” and “I love you, baby.” Alec yawned and Aurora giggled, her dark eyes widening with delight. She was completely memorized and not listening to a think the men were saying, but Dorcas’ laughter managed to catch her attention. Aurora looked up at Dorcas and asked “what’s a ranged marriage?”

Pesky kid. She seemed to pick up on everything. She was six years old, shouldn't she be off playing something or something? Dorcas was drawing a blank. What should a six year old be doing? At that age Dorcas was having riding lessons and learning to swim. She did gymnastics and had supposedly cuddled her bunny to death but she couldn't really recall that, she was just going off stories her mother had told others, mostly Rodolphus. Still Dorcas was asked a question and Dorcas wasn't about to bullshit the kid for what kind of a future she would be in for if it was up to her father and his parents and probably Bella's parents. Did they even see Aurora? "It's when your parents, or in your case your dad, picks who you're going to marry." Dorcas took a mouthful of her drink and swallowed quickly, thinking of something else to tack on the end, "Mm, oh, and it's 'arranged'." She pointed out, saying the word clearly and slowly before finishing off her drink and pushing the glass into Roddy's chest. She let it go, not giving a single shit if the glass fell to the floor and broke, she was out of there. She had no desire to be around these people. She'd said hello, had a drink, answered a question and that was about all her patience could manage for one day. She left them to it, walking back in the direction of the library.

If I am an angel paint me with black wings
The women were getting up in arms about the topic of conversation, and Rodolphus gave Lucius a knowing look over the rim of his glass as he took a sip. Dora was a friendly witch – a bit too “friendly” to make her the marrying type, but clearly not so friendly that Clementine felt her friendship with the witch reflected poorly on herself. Rodolphus had to agree. Short of befriending muggles, there really wasn’t much of anything Clementine or her sister could do to tarnish the Nott name. Hell, Rod was marrying a witch most of society believed to be a bloodtraitor, despite heavy evidence to the contrary, and the Lestrange name was no less respected for it. The wealthy had a lot more leeway than lesser families, that much was for certain.
Aurora asked about arranged marriages and Rod opened his mouth to tell her not to worry about that just yet, but Dorcas took the lead and fucking ran with it. She wasn’t wrong, and Roddy (and Bella too, when she was alive) had already begun talking with Aurora about her duties as a Lestrange witch, but they’d never put it quite so bluntly before. Aurora seemed to take it in stride. “Daddy, when I get range marriaged, can I have a baby?” She clearly hadn’t taken in Dorcas’ help of the pronunciation of arranged. “Of course you can, princess.”
Dorcas shoved her glass into his chest with a bit of force, and Rod took that to mean she was done entertaining for the night. He’d have to give Rabastan 100 galleons when he saw him next – he bet his brother Dorcas wouldn’t last two minutes, and here she’d made it nearly ten! That was impressive, considering the company. “Fine, we can have one,” he said to Dorcas as she left the room. If Rodolphus had his way, which he nearly always got, then they would be having more than just one baby, but Dorcas was more stubborn than a mule. She needed to think it was her idea to have children, just like it had to be her idea to move in with him, and her idea to get married. That last one was still a work in progress, but she was coming along and by now he knew how to deal with her well enough. He turned his attention back to Lucian and his wife.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Lucian rested his hand on his wife’s leg in support as she exclaimed her offense at the direction the conversation had led. Loosh liked Dora and more importantly, Clem liked Dora. The witches kept each other occupied when he wanted some time alone or with the lads, and he was happy that Clementine wasn’t one of those wives that thought she needed to be attached to her husband day and night. They had their own lives and friends and careers, though Clem’s was on hold for the moment, and then when they came together there was actually something worth conversing about. He was reminded almost daily how lucky he was to have been matched up with such an excellent witch for a wife, a reminder almost perfectly timed with Dorcas’ under breath remark and Aurora’s astute little ears.
Polite enough not to stare, Lucian looked to his son as Dorcas made her dramatic exit and Rodolphus remarked on their potentially growing family. Lucian wasn’t touching that topic with a ten foot pole. He gave Clem’s thigh a gentle squeeze. They would be speaking of this later where they could be more frank and, to Lucian’s utter surprise, gossipy. “You seem to have a type, Rod” he remarked, navigating the conversation slowly in the opposite direction. “Firecrackers.” He meant crazy but wasn’t about to say as much aloud. “I don’t envy you as a single dad. I’d lose my head if it weren’t for Clem taking such good care of Alec.” There, hopefully they could talk more about the sane witch in the room and not focus on Dorcas or the trainwreck that appeared to be Rodolphus and Dorcas’ clearly doomed relationship.

Ohh magical Merlin, this was horrendous. Clem had figured this was probably going to be a bit more on the awkward side than most of their visits with friends, but she hadn't been expecting ... well whatever it was that had happened. The only thing she could really equate it to was some kind of tantrum, yet there was no actual tantrum itself. It all seemed rather odd and she wasn't entirely sure how to go about navigating the situation so she just focused on Aurora and Alec, watched Dorcas leave and felt reassured by her husband. The afternoon was far from what Clem envisioned and she'd be telling Lucian as much on the ride home. Of course this was going to make for an absolutely brilliant gossip session with Evie. Rodolphus Lestrange and Dorcas Meadowes were a ridiculous pair to begin with but with all the added drama on top it was now or never for Evie to squeeze her dainty little foot in to the Lestrange world and land herself a husband that was rich as hell and handsome enough if you squinted and focused on the gleam of all that gold he possessed!
Clem chuckled lightly as Lucian pointed out the Roddy had a type. Bat-shit fucking crazy was what Clem would have gone for, but Loosh kept it civil and respectful. Clem smiled at him, grateful for a husband that wasn't prone to too much drama and was rather good at smoothing nasty situations out. He was a gifted wizard and his social skills were also far from lacking. Clem felt exceptionally lucky to have the sane partner right now. "Oh pish posh," She playfully dismissed with a small wave of her hand, "You're an exceptional father," She said, singing Lucian's praise, "Someday Rod will have to give you all his best tips and pointers." She said, hoping that perhaps the gentlemen would find a connection as fathers. They may have been friends before but now having Alec meant that a whole different connection, to his friends that already had children, would be opening up.

If I am an angel paint me with black wings
Being a single father was easy when you were the wealthiest wizard in the country and your ex-wife was dead. Honestly, Bella’s death had been a welcomed reprieve to the chaos of raising a daughter alone. She’d been a wretched mum without an ounce of compassion for her own blood and hadn’t even attempted to give Aurora a little brother nor the Lestrange family a proper heir. Using their only child as a pawn in their hate-filled relationship seemed par for the course but when Bellatrix threatened their daughter directly, Rodolphus knew he had to devote more of his time, energy, and money to keeping Aurora safe and preoccupied. It had been exhausting work, and Aurora had been much clingier in the months following her mother’s departure from the Chateau. Rod had barely any time for himself, but it all seemed to settle following Bella’s death. Dorcas was such a jealous bitch she couldn’t stand Rodolphus’ ex even being alive. Parenting alone after that only seemed to get easier. He once again felt comfortable in leaving Aurora to her own schedule and allowing himself time away for whatever business or whimsy he had planned at the moment. But Rod wasn’t about to recommend to Lucian’s mistress kill off Clementine so that he could enjoy the relaxing freedom of single parenthood. Poor sod didn’t even have a mistress!
“Just give him whatever he wants,” Rod offered, raising his glass to his mouth and then finishing his drink. There was a bit of humor in his words, but he also believed it to be the truth. The Lestrange boys had been handed everything they’d ever wanted and were poised to continue the family legacy with style and competence. Rabby was easily climbing the political ladder and Roddy was heading a successful international corporation. Their greed as children had only made them want more as adults and they were both ruthless in their individual pursuits, albeit with completely opposite methods. “Worked out well my brother and I and seems to be spot on for this one,” he said of Aurora. He set his empty glass down on the coffee table where Ader would take note of it shortly and refresh it without instruction. Aurora began to fidget and drew her father’s eye. “Are you done playing with the baby, love?”
Aurora shook her head vigorously but looked up to Clem and said, “I want to show him my broom.” She tried to scoot from the sofa but couldn’t manage to go anywhere while holding the baby. “I’m a beater like daddy! Baby can be chaser. Or keeper. I don’t think he can fly fast enough to be a seeker because he is just a baby but if he wants to play that one then I can just win a lot. I like winning. Daddy always loses ‘gainst me ‘cause I’m so good.”
