I offer love and loyalty I expect the same in return
The healer was optimistic about her condition this time around, but he’d been so with Carina as well, so Narcissa didn’t trust it. Lucius, true to form, had offered the healer a private contract to be available night and day, whenever Cissa needed him. There would be no family holidays or special events he couldn’t excuse himself from. The man had agreed to be at their beck and call and Narcissa was taking full advantage. She was two months along but already beginning to show. Her body was well used to the early stages of pregnancy by now, but this little one had made it further than some of her others. It was a cause for hope, the healer had informed her, but Cissa still wasn’t sure. She was already seeing the man every other week and his only concern thus far was that Narcissa was causing herself undue stress in worrying so much, and it was not healthy for the baby. She needed to relax. That was simple enough for him to say, seeing as how he would never understand the anguish of being a childless mother several times over and having to feel the little love inside literally being ripped from your toxic body. He couldn’t possibly understand, but she agreed to his advice regardless and left his office with a blank expression on her face.
She’d been approved for travel by Floo Network, though it was advised she refrained from apparition when at all possible and definitely not at all in the third trimester. Cissa doubted her new little love would last that long. Still, the safest means of travel was flying carriage and as the Malfoys had their own private carriage, it was Narcissa’s mode of choice. The carriage landed gently on the busy muggle street, completely unnoticed as the ignorant waifs strolled past, busying themselves with their own shopping and conversations. Narcissa paid them no mind except for her turned up nose as she passed them by and entered the Leaky Cauldron. The dark pub was noisy as it always was, but she spent very little time inside, moving straight on through to the back alley where she tapped her wand on a series of bricks. An archway opened before her and the bustling sounds of Diagon Alley sprang to life.
Shop after shop, Cissa passed them all at a leisurely pace, having a set destination in mind but feeling in no rush to return home straight away. Lucius was working today and she would rather be around strangers than be alone with her depressive thoughts and valid worries. Stopping at one of the little carts that lined the crooked alley, Cissa purchased herself a new necklace, a gold chain with a ruby pendant, a rune for happiness carved into it discretely. The merchant wrapped it in tissue paper and plopped it gingerly into a tiny bag, which Cissa held on her wrist like a purse as she continued on to her ultimate destination. Twilfitt and Tattings had a fine assortment of high-end clothing and Narcissa hoped a new dress would perk her spirits up a bit. She strolled through the shop, admiring a cloak here and robes there before becoming distracted by the most adorable tiny set of infant robes with matching booties that was peeking out from the child’s section as she passed. Cissa held the small outfit in her hands. Pale blue with patterned white dragons breathing glittering fire all across the fabric. The booties had tiny blue ribbons running around the ankles. She was practically entranced by the ensemble, completely losing herself as she turned it over in her hands, inspecting the stitching and beginning to daydream about what could be.

A Rose Among The Thorns The black cloak sat heavily on Rabastan's shoulders as he stood, still as a statue on the small podium in the back of Twilfitt and Tattings. It was thick, designed for winter, with a strong warming charm imbued into the soft material. "You're all done, Mr. Lestrange," the seamstress said softly as she gave the hem one last tug, making sure it was sitting at the perfect length for Rabastan's frame. He couldn't deny that it was perfection as he gazed at himself in the mirror before him. The cloak swished as he stepped down from the small box, the inner lining revealed as he moved, a rich silk in a beautiful sage hue that he had picked out himself. It was his favourite colour, and it looked mighty fine on his new cloak, if he did say so himself. His hair was long, maybe too long, the tips kissing his shoulders as he admired his reflection, deciding that he was happy with his purchase. "It's a fine cloak," he complimented the woman. "I'm sure I'll be wanting more over the coming months." He would indeed be ordering more, but for now he was happy with just the one to stave off the autumn chill. His long hair helped as a barrier from the cold, though he would be getting it cut soon enough. The seamstress hurried off to her next chore, and Rabastan turned and began to weave his way through the shop towards the exit, doing a double take at the sight of a blonde woman looking at children's clothing. She held up a small outfit meant for a baby, pale blue cloak and booties to match, and Rabastan watched for a long moment, the sight of a childless mother lost in dreams holding him captive longer than he might have expected. "Narcissa," he breathed, taking a few steps closer to the woman, who was one of the most graceful and beautiful pureblooded women around. "Is this nostalgia or necessity?" he asked gently, stopping at her side, his eyes fixed on the tiny robes as he imagined he might have a child of his own to fit in them in a year or so. He could hope, at least. He was set to marry Lilith next month, and he hoped that they would be able to produce an heir quite quickly, but he had no idea of the fertility of the Burkes. Lucius hadn't a clue Narcissa would have so much trouble carrying his child when he had married her. You really couldn't predict these things, but Rabastan hoped beyond hope that he wouldn't befall the same cruel fate as the Malfoys. _______________________ tag: Narcissa Astrid Malfoy words: 466 notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Nothing You Could Do"]

A small blond baby wiggling and smiling up from his cot, clothed in a pale blue with white dragons and matching booties. It was the most wonderful scene she could possibly imagine and yet Narcissa felt a cool disconnect from it, as if she were looking at the child from afar. Turning the robes over in her hand, she could practically feel the weight of the little one in them. She would cuddle him and hold him close to her chest. He would be warm and make gentle noises like a little church mouse, his chubby arms and legs wiggling freely with piercing blue eyes looking up at her. He would have Lucius’ eyes, she had decided that with their first baby too, and the second, then no more until Carina. They might have had the most beautiful children, dressed in the most adorable little outfits such as the one she held now, were it not for her poisonous body.
Her name being called, though gentle in tone, startled her. Narcissa gave a small jump, her hand rushing instinctively to her stomach as her heartbeat quickened. She gave a sharp turn of her head toward the voice and immediately felt a rush of embarrassment joining the adrenaline. “Rabastan” she said with a breathy tone that mirrored her startled relief. “I wasn’t expecting…”
The wizard’s eyes fell on the infant robes she still held in her hand and Narcissa’s gaze followed. “I’m not sure,” she said softly, then quickly shook her head and straightened herself up, lifting her chin as she spoke next. “I’m not sure why it attracted me, I mean. Perhaps the glitter, you know how witches can be.” She gave the tiny robes a little stroke to smooth out and creases her handling of it may have created, then hung it back on the display and adjusted it neatly on the little hanger so it hung as nicely as it had when it had first caught her eye. Taking a deep breath as she smiled, Narcissa shook loose the last traces of her daydreams.

A Rose Among The Thorns She seemed more than a little bit dazed as she realised she was not alone, but Rabastan kept his calm gaze upon her, dark eyes lacking judgement as he listened to her trying to find the words to snap herself out of it. She had been through so much loss, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising for her to be overwhelmed just at the sight of baby clothes. His own parents had been quite put out that they only had one grandchild and she was a girl, and though they adored Aurora and treated her like the princess she was, Rabastan had sat with his mother while she emptied her fourth glass of sherry and cried at him that he needed to have a son yesterday because it just wouldn't do for Aurora to be the only Lestrange heir. Of course Rabby would have children, as many of them as his wife wanted, even if that meant having ten little rogues running around. He was great with kids, and Aurora would probably like the company, since she had no siblings. His mother's drunken tears meant nothing, though, when compared to the tears Narcissa must have cried over a much more pressing issue. Rabastan let out a soft chuckle as she told him she had been drawn to the glitter on the tiny suit, and he gestured to the woman who stood behind the shop counter across the room. "I'm sure they could make one in Lucius' size if you really like it," he joked, imagining Luci in such a getup and thoroughly enjoying the image. He hoped to lighten the moment for her, but he didn't expect a laugh. If she wished to be alone with her thoughts, that was all well and good, he would leave her be, but he was not the sort to pass her by without making sure she was alright. What kind of friend would he be to Lucius if he didn't check on his wife? Not a very good one, and he hoped that his own friends would be supportive in such a manner if he and Lilith ever needed it. Not that they would. They would be due triplets within the year. Quadruplets? Would that be too hard on Lilith? Or worse, would that damage her figure beyond return? Perhaps twins. The dragon robes really were cute. _______________________ tag: Narcissa Astrid Malfoy words: 417 notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Nothing You Could Do"]

Rabastan was a kind man, much more so than his brother and much more refined as well. He didn’t needle Narcissa about her evasive answer, and while she hoped she had been convincing enough there was a nagging in the back of her head telling her Lestrange was judging her for shopping for a child that would never arrive. She turned to face Rabastan fully, giving a tight-lipped smile that crinkled her eyes as he suggested she have the shop owner make an adult-sized version of the outfit for Lucius. “You don’t think I could pull off the look myself?” she asked, one perfectly shaped brow quirking up at him. “Blue is my color, you know.” They were all her colors. Her fair hair and complexion complimented any outfit and style nicely, even bold reds and vibrant yellows looked stunning on her. She wasn’t being narcissistic in her thinking, she just knew what she could pull off and it was pretty much anything, aside from maternity wear. She had not been able to determine anything so blessed as that.
She stepped forward and gave Rabastan a kiss on the cheek, a more proper greeting than she’d given him earlier when she has practically jumped out of her skin at the sound of his voice. “How are you, darling? Getting excited for your big day?” she asked, knowing his wedding was only just over a month away. Narcissa liked Rabastan’s future wife. They would have been distant sisters-in-law had Rodolphus and Bellatrix worked out, but the pair had separated before her sister’s death and now she and the lovely Burke witch were to be distant nothings. It didn’t matter any, they would still see each other often enough and if Narcissa could fully pull herself back into a social mindset, she would be inviting Lilith and Rabastan over for tea sometime after they returned from their honeymoon. Perhaps she’d have a big, round stomach to show off by then but it was too early now to say for certain whether this child would make it to term.

A Rose Among The Thorns "I'm sure you'd make fire breathing dragons look elegant," he assured her with a wide smile. Narcissa, of all people, could make a burlap sack look elegant, he was sure, but Rabastan really shouldn't be complimenting another woman so generously when he was so close to marrying a different elegant beauty. He was sure Lucius complimented his wife plenty, when he could drag himself away from a mirror. The guy appreciated beauty more than anyone else Rabby knew, and he certainly had the right wife for that fancy. Rabastan's thoughts turned to his own future wife as Narcissa asked him if he was excited about the wedding, which was fast approaching. He really couldn't tell her the specific type of excited that he was, it wouldn't be appropriate, but he nodded. "Excited, yes," he agreed, though he didn't sound nearly as enthusiastic as he could have. Rabastan wasn't really into the idea of a lavish wedding, with hundreds of guests and food that had been made by the Gods themselves, but it made Lilith happy, and he could play along all day if he had to. If it were up to him, he would have a more intimate affair, just loved ones, still extravagant and with the finest the world had to offer, but more private. He hated the thought of any Tom, Dick, or Harry watching him exchange vows with his wife. There would be people there from Lilith's family, and friends of hers that Rabastan had never even met, and they'd only been invited just to be polite and show off. He didn't like that, but he was certainly excited for the wedding night. "Though Aurora has me beat, all she ever talks about is how she's going to be the best flower girl in the world. I mean, she's right, but there's only so many times she can pull flowers from the garden and sprinkle them all over my living room before it gets a bit draining," he laughed. _______________________ tag: Narcissa Astrid Malfoy words: 354 notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Nothing You Could Do"]

A picture of little Aurora plucking roses by the stem, roots still attached and covered in soil, and throwing them about Rabastan’s pristine living room began to blossom in Narcissa’s mind. She chuckled lightly. “I can only imagine.” Her niece was, without question, adorable but Narcissa had not spent as much time with the child as she ought to have. The struggles with her repeated failed pregnancies had jaded Narcissa and she found a visit from her niece, whom the child’s own mother didn’t even seem to really care for, was simply too much for her. Aurora was a painful reminder of Narcissa’s cursed luck, and she found it cruel that Merlin had chosen to bless Bellatrix of all witches with a child while Narcissa should be practically barren. Bella had never wanted children. She had never desired to be a mother like Narcissa had, and she seemed content to only have a single child when clearly her body was capable of bringing a child safely into the world. The eldest of the Black sisters had never even really seemed phased by Narcissa’s repeated traumas, though she wasn’t harsh about it, just indifferent. That was simply Bella’s way, but despite knowing her sister did care for her deep down, Narcissa still felt Aurora’s presence to be a slap in the face. How shameful for a grown woman to view a child that way. With Bella gone, it seemed more important than ever that Narcissa make more of an effort where the child was concerned. Clearly Rabastan and his bride-to-be were not opposed to allowing the child be a part of their life, and Aurora ought to know something of her mother’s family.
