Oliver Osiris Devereaux
PERSONALITY Boggart: Although the children were kept mostly in the dark about the whole event, Ollie is very much aware of what happened to cause his mother's death when they were younger, and it has scarred him. Faced with a boggart, he would see his mum as she was in her last days, frail, pale, and utterly heartbreaking to look upon as she screamed for him to bite her. Mirror of Erised: Ollie would jokingly claim that were he to look upon the mirror, he would see himself sitting in a throne atop a pile of gold and surrounded by gorgeous witches. In reality, Ollie would see himself at the Quidditch World Cup, standing beside his team mates, able to play to his full potential without worry of being shunned or called a cheater. Patronus: Being half-vampire, Ollie cannot produce a patronus, but if he could it would almost certainly be a mountain lion, conjured by the memory of his first kiss; Penelope Chesterfell, a gorgeous blonde witch who kissed him on a dare in the library during his fourth year. More outgoing than his older brother, Oliver enjoys being the life of the party. In school, he was known for pulling jokes and playing friendly pranks on his mates. He will never pass up the opportunity to drag his brother out for a night of classical fun, something Kit seems adamantly against despite allowing his brother to succeed every now and again. Beyond the days of being jealous of his brother, Oliver has found his own place in the world. He enjoys the outdoors, hiking and camping whenever he can round up a few mates to join him. While Ollie has had a few girlfriends in the past, he’s typically a little awkward around women he finds attractive. Stumbling over his words or losing control of himself in one way or another, it’s not uncommon to see Ollie being more reserved in front of the ladies – especially when he was younger. He likes to think himself a bit cooler now, having adapted a more nonchalant ease to his demeanor instead of the bumbling ball of nerves that once knocked a girl unconscious. Oliver knows what it means to be looked down upon for something you have no control over, even if those few who were able to find out that he and his siblings were half-vampire had their beliefs altered thanks to Maximus’ vampiric abilities. It never sat well with Oliver that some wizards thought themselves better than others because of their lineage. Whether it was blood purists or wealthy snobs, Oliver takes issue with people who look down their nose at him, his loved one, or anyone marked as ‘different’. HISTORY Mother: Liliana (Ana) Devereaux, deceased aged 30 (13 years ago), Pureblood witch, Ravenclaw Alumni Father: Maximus (Max) Eridanos Devereaux, 453 (appears eternally around 30 years old), Vampire Siblings: Christopher Erebus Devereaux, 23, Ravenclaw Alumni Seraphina Alala Devereaux, 17, Ravenclaw student Romily Eris Devereaux, 16, Hufflepuff student Partners: A couple past exes - ended mostly on good terms but nothing noteworthy. Others: his brother's cat, Azreal The Devereaux family was already established by the time Oliver arrived, as was the family drama. Liliana’s addiction had only been fueled by her second pregnancy and while it dimmed the light inside of her even more, her second son had been born strong. As with their first child, Liliana chose her second son’s first name, and Maximus determining the middle name. Oliver Osiris, named for the nice gent at the market who always gave young Kit a lolli when they were out shopping, and for the Egyptian god of the dead. It was no wonder that young Ollie was a bit of a paradox. Named for the light and the dark, Ollie was known for being both reserved and boisterous. Ollie looked up to his big brother, Kit, and when they were younger Ollie would follow his brother around like a puppy – or at least like how he was told puppies would follow their owners around. Oliver had always wanted a dog but the creatures disliked the Devereaux boys, and as such, Oliver had very little interaction with them. It was a shame, he used to say, because he would have been a brilliant dog owner. He was patient and responsible, taking on the responsibility of looking after his sisters with his brother after their mum had passed. Ollie had been young, only seven with Liliana’s addiction had finally taken her, but to this day he still remembers the look of false strength on their father’s face as he told the children of their mother’s death. Ollie had looked to Kit that night for guidance on what to do and how to react. Like his father, Ollie hid the majority of his sorrow, instead focusing on helping his sisters keep busy as a means of coping with what they were too young to really understand. At Liliana’s funeral, Oliver sat quietly, holding his sister Romily on his lap and watching as Kit made a flower bloom. It was the first time Oliver had ever been jealous of his brother. The second time came two years later, when Kit appeared with scratches on his arms and an acceptance letter to Hogwarts in his hands. A third occurrence came shortly after, when Kit returned home from a shopping trip with their mum’s friend and a cat who not only didn’t yowl and hiss at the boy – or any of the Devereaux children – but actually seemed rather fond of them. It was Kit’s cat, and so yet again Oliver found himself scowling with a gnarled feeling in the pit of his stomach. Jealousy always made Ollie act out. After Azreal joined the family, Ollie wanted a pet, too, and once Kit was off at the prestigious magical school, Oliver made a move. The now nine-year-old attempted to smuggle a medium-sized dog home from their neighbor’s house, but the animal refused to go anywhere with the half-vampire. The barking alerted the older couple and when they had come into the back garden they found Oliver covered in bites and scratches, with a broken leg from where the animal had clamped down with its mighty jaw and shook Oliver like a ragdoll. Maximus was furious with his son for trying to steal the creature but whatever punishment was handed out was nothing compared to the knowledge that the older couple had put their dog down, thinking it a danger to humans. Finally, it was Oliver’s time to join his brother at Hogwarts. Sorted into Gryffindor, Ollie made friends quickly with the boys in his house. As his brother had, Oliver excelled in Flying but where Kit had the good sense to avoid the quidditch team and the risk of his vampiric powers being found out, Oliver took it head on. In his third year he made the Gryffindor team as a beater. Before every practice or match, Oliver would assure Kit that he’d go easy on the other players, and he really did try. It wasn’t until his first match against Ravenclaw in his fourth year that Oliver let his natural strength nearly spoil what the boys had worked so diligently to hide. Marceline Hodgkins had never stood out to Oliver before but as she came soaring past him on a broom, the sun hitting her golden hair, Ollie became flustered and sent a bludger hurtling straight for her with a force stronger than anyone had seen on the Hogwarts pitch in some time. Marceline ended up in the hospital wing for a month, and after a chat with his Head of House, Oliver ran to find Kit and explain what had happened. The problem was that Ollie didn’t know how to explain it. Matters were only made worse when Marceline refused Oliver’s sincere apology, though that may have had something to do with Ollie knocking over the vase of fresh flowers her friends had sent her, dowsing her in water and stepping on the colorful petals as he bent to pick up the shards of glass now covering the floor. Ollie didn’t attempt to speak to Marceline again for another year. Eventually his sisters joined him at Hogwarts and soon enough Kit was graduated. Everything was changing but Oliver felt comfortable in the role he had made for himself. A slightly better than mediocre quidditch player – by choice – and class clown amongst his mates. He did well enough in his classes, though his grades slipped a little once Kit was no longer available to help him study. Studying didn’t come as naturally to Oliver as it had to his big brother, but he finished his last years with solid marks and an invitation to try out for the Falmouth Falcons as a professional quidditch player. Ollie leapt at the opportunity, knowing he could let a little more of his natural abilities shine through amongst the professionals of the world. When he isn't traveling with the team, Oliver lives with his brother Kit - a budding Auror - not far from the rest of their family.
