I'll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you
(Like I've been there before)
It might have technically been spring, but the blonde was still shivering as she made her way along the path that wound its way across the lawns, usually bright and green but dulled and yellowed by the severity of the winter just gone. Admittedly, perhaps she ought to have been wearing a little more than just her school uniform and a cloak, but it had been advertised as a winter cloak! And since it was now spring, in Kitty's personal opinion, that should mean that the cloak should keep her warm all by itself- she shouldn't even need to wear her uniform underneath it, but she conceded that the rest of the school might have a few complaints to make if she was to test that hypothesis and in any case, she didn't need to go that far because she was cold.
Had she mentioned how cold it was? Because it was completely and utterly freezing! The wind was like a knife; it was going straight through her- too lazy to go around, the Hufflepuff supposed- and she wouldn't be surprised to see a penguin or two wandering around the gardens. What was she even doing out here in the first place, Kitty wondered? And then she remembered... oh yes, nothing at all. Foolishly, she had decided that she needed to get some fresh air after being cooped up in the castle all week, and so she had ventured out into the great outdoors... completely and utterly unprepared as she was. It had not, all things considered, been the best idea that she'd ever had.

Frosty Days
Geralina laughed as Tala, her tiny old elf owl, nipped at her finger for another treat. She didn't often bring him to work with her, but she knew he loved the castle, and had missed his days living there when he had been at school with her. He had been her first ever owl, right back in her first year of school, and now he was a very old man, but he came to life when she brought him with her to fly around the grounds. It was beautiful to see him having such a treat in his twilight years, as she didn't know how much longer he would be with her. It wasn't something she liked to dwell on, though, and instead she focused on how content he was each day, that was enough for her. Reaching into her pocket for a tiny owl treat, he snatched it from her hand as soon as she offered it up to him, and and she tickled the feathers at the nape of his neck with one finger. He was still as soft as the day she bought him.
"No snatching," she told him firmly, though her tone was far too gentle. She really didn't like telling him off. "You need to be a good boy or you won't be able to co-" And he was off. Without bothering to listen to her boring cautioning, he gave a few hard flaps of his tiny wings and soared off across the grounds, sailing around a copse of trees and out of sight. "Tala!" she called, breaking into a jog to try and catch up with him. She eventually rounded the trees to see him heading straight for a blonde girl who was trundling along the path. "Tala, watch out! Come back!" she called, picking up speed as he let out a hoot of defiance. He had always been stubborn and hard to train, but Geralina knew he also got a kick out of being a rebel. He flew straight into the girl, gripping her shoulder and trying his best to find a perch on it to sit on. Grey-blue eyes widened, and Tala's owner skidded to a halt in horror as she watched her owl probably scare the life out of a poor unsuspecting student. "I am so sorry!" she called, forcing herself to move again and closing the gap between herself and the girl with the tiny owl clinging to her shoulder.

Kitty was not often to be found complaining about the weather; she had, after all, grown up in the north of Scotland, which she personally considered to be one of the coldest, if most beautiful, places on the planet. But now, even she had to concede that she was starting to shiver and the blonde was just deciding that she probably ought to be heading back inside when her plans were somewhat sabotaged by the completely unexpected arrival of an utterly miniscule owl. The blonde would have been lying if she'd claimed not to have been surprised; on the contrary, she nearly jumped out of her skin, and the sudden increase in her pulse told its own story. However, it only took the Hufflepuff a moment or two to establish the cause of her panic, and she had to laugh. The owl was just about the least threatening animal that she had ever seen in her life, and Kitty didn't tend to find many animals frightening since, when one had been hauling tonnes of horse around by the nose for as long as she had, size tended to be less of a worry.
"Well, hello." she greeted the little bird with a smile, gently offering him her finger to examine. "Aren't you the lovely one? I bet someone's not happy to have lost you..." The blonde turned slowly to examine the horizon behind her, working on the assumption that since she hadn't seen the owl approach, he must have come from that direction, although to be honest, Kitty would have to concede that it was entirely possible that the bird had been in front of her all the time. Observation and attention to detail were not counted amongst the Scottish girl's qualities very often by those who knew her well.
However, she was perfectly able to see the woman hurrying down the track towards her and it only took a second or two for the Hufflepuff to recognise the older woman as being the librarian. Kitty was good at people- what she was not good at was names, and as she watched the other person approach, she tried frantically to remember exactly what the woman's name was. Something to do with birds, she thought... Was it Swan? No, but something along those lines. With any luck, she'd get away with not knowing it.
"Don't worry about it!" she assured the other with a sunny smile. "A shock every so often is good for you, right?"

Frosty Days
Heart racing in panic, Geralina was a little bit relieved to see the blonde girl holding her finger up to Tala and chatting to him, a smile on her face. She was a pet friendly one, thank Merlin for that! Some kids didn't like owls at all, Geralina had seen a few of them having a moment of horror at breakfast when the post came in. It was the wings, something about the flapping wings stirred up a feeling of panic and the need to flee. Geralina's mum was the exact same, any time she was around any kind of bird, she ran away if it flapped it's wings. It had always seemed silly to Geralina when she was a child, and she'd laugh often at her poor terrified mother, but now as an adult, she understood it a bit better. It was always better to be cautious, though this girl didn't seem to have any issues with Tala at all. So far. He could be a bit of a grump in his old age, she would hate for him to nip anyone, even though owls were kind of known for that anyway.
A shock every so often is good for you? Geralina definitely didn't agree with that. She'd prefer a shock free life, thank you very much, but disagreeing with someone wasn't her favourite thing to do, so she laughed with a small nod. "So they say," she smiled, happy to have found a response that wasn't her lying by agreeing with the girl. Loopholes, loopholes. They were wonderful at stopping one from being a two-faced liar. "I am sorry, though," she said once more, stopping beside the small girl and pointing to Tala. "Tala must have liked the look of you, he's a law unto himself." Never a truer word spoken. Giving a quick whistle which Tala was trained to respond to by flying to her, she looked at him. Tala looked back at her. He didn't move. She whistled again. Nothing. Perfect. "Tala, come here," she said with an awkward laugh, holding her arm out for him to hop on to. Tala stayed put on the blonde's shoulder. "I think you're stuck with him," she curled her lip in an embarrassed cringe. This was uncomfortable. She hadn't planned on standing around chatting to a student while she waited for her own to detach himself from said student's shoulder. Awkward.

(When the rain starts to pour)

Having grown up in a household where it was considered perfectly normal to haul around ten-tonne animals as though they were puppies, a miniscule owl held very little terror for the blonde who, slight as she might be- and she was, there was no arguing that point, rather to her own surprise considering the amount of cake, biscuits and chocolate which she had consumed in her lifetime- had been dealing with horses twice her own size and more than twice her own weight ever since she could remember. Being of a sympathetic disposition, the blonde was perfectly capable of commiserating with those who suffered from a fear of the owls which seemed to be a staple of the wizarding world. She could sympathise, yes, but by no means could she understand it. Owls were, in her firm opinion, wonderful creatures. Some of them were cute, some of them were majestic, all of them were amazing. Kitty had a distinct suspicion that they were all far more intelligent than they were letting on, and she had never yet won a staring contest with one, although she had been practising hard just lately.
She shook her head rapidly at the woman's repeated apology. "No, honestly, it's fine." the Hufflepuff girl insisted. Kitty never had been happy with people apologising to her; it made her feel guilty and uncomfortable, and especially so when she hadn't been at all put out by whatever the issue at hand actually was. As had happened here, because the blonde had no objection whatsoever to being molested by small and adorable birds. "Then I suppose I should be flattered." the Scottish girl joked lightly, turning her head gently to one side to avoid startling the bird and giving him a wink. To be entirely honest, such was Kitty's opinion of the species that she would have been only very slightly surprised to see him wink back.
