Dearest Lizzie, School is always more difficult to return to in winter, the holiday simply isn’t long enough. Just as you warned me, lessons are becoming more cumbersome, particularly the homework assigned. I’m always up for writing a good essay but its simply not feasible to maintain any sort of social life and complete all this work with a decent grade, and I would be loathed to purposely submit something I knew wasn’t O worthy. I think I may be staying here at Hogwarts for the Easter holiday to ensure I’m caught up, but I will let you know my plans for certain as the time nears.
Despite the work, I am still enjoying my final year. It would be better if I had been chosen Head Girl, but I hardly think you want to hear me prattle on about that again. I can take the hint after half the table “fell asleep” while I was talking about it over Christmas supper. Tell me something of your life. What are you working on now?
My apologies in advance if I don’t respond as quickly to your letters as I ought to. School work, and all…
Yours Truly, Amelia

My darling Amelia;
You are entirely correct; the Christmas holidays are not, never have been and are unlikely ever to be long enough. Considering that the term between September and December is the longest of the school year, I really do think that the holidays which one has to look forward to ought to be longer. Still, this would involve common sense, which is never a popular attribute at the Ministry, and so it will not happen. You have my sincerest condolences.
I am so glad to hear that you are maintaining the high standard which you have set for yourself; it is an excellent representation of the Greengrass family as a whole, and it will stand you in good stead whatever you may decide to do with yourself upon leaving. Of course you could easily find a rich husband, and if Mother and Father were not picky enough, then I certainly should be! But while I should be sorry to see you ever married to someone who is not worthy of you- did you hear about the Potters' heir? Scandalous!- your life is yours, and if you should choose to pursue a high-flying career of your own, then it is essential that you obtain good NEWT scores- but of course, you know all this already, and I shall stop before I bore you.
I should be sorry to miss the opportunity of seeing you at Easter, but of course I understand that your studies must come first, and so I shall, if necessary, be content to wait until the summer, when I may be able to take you out to celebrate the end of your Hogwarts career! It is a pleasure to hear that you are still enjoying your time there, for your seventh year is a vital one for forming connections which you can carry out into the greater world. I myself am currently engaged upon the composition of a number upon the theme of bureaucracy, which I have great hopes of. Did I tell you that I met Finn in Whimsic Alley the other day? We had a very pleasant evening.
Do try and write whenever you have a moment, although of course I have no wish to impose further restriction upon your social life, which I have no doubt is flowering!
Ever your loving sister; Lizzie X

Dearest Lizzie, If it is common sense you are looking for, my sister, you are not apt to find it very often. I simply cannot understand how one can go through so many years of schooling and come out the other end being so utterly daft that it hurts. We really are exceptionally gifted, in so many ways. I try to remind myself that before my shared lessons, particularly with the Hufflepuffs. I could wrap a dog treat in a mars bar wrapper and they wouldn’t bat an eye at until they were licking their fingers, and even then, I doubt they’d notice.
Has mummy being on about my future again? Marrying well is all well and good but I would like a bit of encouragement in a more professional capacity. It’s the 70’s, you know. Working women are all the rage. I’ve done as daddy suggested and kept my options open by maintaining a broad coursework, which will help me in the future should I get good marks in all my lessons. (As if anything less is even plausible.)
What about the Potters?? Lizzie, you know you can’t just throw out a random tidbit of juicy gossip and then leave me dangling! That’s totally unfair of you. Tell me what’s happening!
Yours Truly, Amelia

My darling sister; Indeed, I must own that common sense seems to have been singularly misnamed in that I do not think that I know of any virtue which is so uncommon amongst those whom I have known over the course of my life so far. Do not concern yourself with the Hufflepuffs, I beg; they were ever thus, and I have no doubt that the house of the badgers will continue in the same vein until the end of time. In my own opinion, they are singularly misfortunate in having their common room located in close proximity to the kitchens, especially since there seems to be some unknown criteria which ensures that Hufflepuffs are utterly obsessed with their stomachs.
Mother is always concerned with your future, as you well know; you can hardly have failed to notice how much time she spent discussing the matter over Christmas. She has nothing but your best interests at heart, although I think that she may need to be reminded of what your interests actually are. Will you write to her? It would please her so much, and you could perhaps take the opportunity to hint that you have plans for your future which include more factors than simply which heir of the marrying age stands to inherit the largest fortune? Simply a suggestion.
Amelia, my dear, it is not seemly to be so demanding! But since you are so eager to ask, I shall tell you. Do you recall James Potter? He was around my age, although a Gryffindor of course, and rather good-looking, though regretfully possessed of some ridiculous pro-Muggle tendencies. In any case, he is engaged to a Mudblood, and I hear that his parents are entirely in favour! What on earth is the world coming to? Well, there goes another ancient bloodline down the drain. Such a pity.
And now you have my gossip, what of yours? I have no doubt that you must have boys buzzing around you like bees at a honeypot, my beautiful sister. And you are in your seventh year! Time flies, does it not? Do let me know soonest!
Ever your loving sister;
Lizzie

Dearest Lizzie, Of course I will write to mummy. Your suggestions are always welcome. I am rather surprised that I don’t already have a stack of letters from her and daddy yet. I’ve chalked it up to you somehow keeping them occupied and I thank you for it, even if you were unaware of the valuable service you’ve been providing as a decoy. he he
It is so tragic when a proper family falls from grace. Did you have any idea of his leanings while in school or is this a sudden change of heart? You know, I wouldn’t put it past the muggleborn to have tricked him somehow into a relationship. They are known for their trickery, after all.
Not much gossip on my end that would be of interest to you, dear sister. I do have lunch plans with Jovi soon, and perhaps something of interest will be discussed then. If that is the case, I will certainly convey the information as quickly as possible. Give everyone my love.
Yours Truly, Amelia

My darling sister; I must confess that I may have dropped a hint or two about the weight of one's workload in NEWT year and the added strain of keeping up a correspondence, though I must say that I hardly expected it to be so rigorously observed! Mother is not often receptive to hints, lovely as she is, although I suppose that I may not have been as subtle as I imagined... Please, dear, don't assign too much importance to my suggestions, since I'm sure most of them are ridiculous in any case!
It is tragic indeed to see another fall from amongst our number, and I imagine that it is cases such as this which have caused the dwindling of pure families across the generations. A dreadful sight. Yes, indeed I did note his tendencies at Hogwarts and was careful to steer clear of him and his little group of brain-dead followers. I must say, though, that Fleamont and Euphemia seem to have encouraged him! What kind of an example do they wish to present to posterity, one has to ask? Trickery is always a possibility, of course, and I dare say that it would not be difficult with James Potter, for he appears to have about as many brain cells as he does noses.
I shall look forward to hearing from you soon, my dear, and do remember that if there is ever anything at all that I can do for you, you need only write.
Ever your loving sister;
Lizzie
X
