Kai William Baddock
PERSONALITY Boggart: Death Eaters removing their masks and showing themselves to be members of his family Mirror of Erised: He's sitting behind a table in a bookstore with stacks of his best-selling series ready to be signed for the queue of eager fans Patronus: Kai cannot produce a patronus despite having tried in recent months. As he focuses on happy memories one face always appears and there's a glimmer of a patronus that begins to emerge but soon enough Kai's picturing the cupboard at the Chinese restaurant and everything falls apart from there. He'd like to think his patronus would be a wise owl but there's really no telling. Kai has an outgoing personality - not in an over-the-top, look at me sort of way, but he is very friendly and isn't above making an ass out of himself for a few laughs should the mood strike. He loves to explore, whether that means snooping through abandoned buildings or hiking through the woods, the adventure of the unknown is thrilling to him and it gives him a chance to document his outings. In another life he might have been a detective or a spy but this is the real world, so he's settled for a writer who likes to tell both truths and fictions - and knows the difference! Kai can sometimes rub people the wrong way, though rarely on purpose. He's not above being a bit of a childish prat if the right asshat comes along but generally speaking he's pretty fun to be around. There may be some worries if you're the sort to do illegal deeds and think paying off the news media is a good way to stay out of trouble, because if Kai gets wind he's not above blowing the story wide open. As for his romantic life, it's hard to tell what Kai would really be like. Since the age where he discovered girls are nice to look at, he's been infatuated with his best friend. Kai knows from his own parents' marriage that even the closest relationships can sour and he doesn't want to add any sort of element to his friendship with Nelle that could result in their not being friends anymore, so he's forced himself to see other girls but his heart was never fully in it. Even now that he's engaged, he's kind and affectionate and tries to be spontaneous with "the romance stuff" as he not so eloquently puts it, but there's always a hint of force behind it, even if just subconsciously. HISTORY Mother: Leona Baddock nee Morris, 60, Gryffindor, pureblood Father: Henry Baddock, 63, Slytherin, pureblood Siblings: Penelope Baddock, 28, Gryffindor, pureblood Harris Baddock, 17, Hufflepuff, pureblood Partners: Margery Laster, 22, Ravenclaw, halfblood Others: Noelle Emma Fawley , 23, bestie, soul mate - what? no! shh! Henry and Leona Baddock were very much in love when they got married, and were excited for their first child, a daughter they named Penelope. A few years later Kai came along and he certainly was a handful. He was a rather loud child, full of energy and curiosity. Parenthood put a strain on the Baddock’s marriage and everyone was shocked when Leona fell pregnant for a third time. By then, Henry and Leona had officially separated and were living apart. The children spent most of their time with their mother but twice a month they would spend a weekend at their father’s house until they were sent off to school. Kai doesn’t remember much of their parents when they were together. He was five when his dad had moved out and seven when they officially divorced, and during that time he spent most of his days playing with his sister if he wasn’t in school. He really didn’t notice his parents fighting much in front of them, and whether that was a conscious act of parental love or just coincidence as Henry and Leona no longer cared much for spending time together, Kai doesn’t know. His parents’ relationship is just about the only thing he doesn’t ask questions about, otherwise there is nothing off the table for his curious mind. Kai was eager to get his Hogwarts letter the summer before his first year. Penny had talked all about the wonderful friends she’d made there, how much she enjoyed her classes (and how much she loathed some of them), and all about the wonders of the castle itself. Kai had hoped to be sorted into Gryffindor with his sister, but instead he was sorted into Ravenclaw after much discussion with the Sorting Hat. It worked out well, though, as Kai’s best friend Noelle Fawley was also placed in Ravenclaw and that meant more time for the friends to spend together. Kai spent his first few years exploring the castle as much as possible, searching for secret corridors and funny trick rooms that his sister had mentioned previously. He kept meticulous logs of his findings but even by the end of his seventh year he was certain he hadn’t discovered even half of it. In his third year, Kai began a school newspaper – The Hogwarts Herald. It was a single-page newsletter more than a newspaper but he put it out regularly every week and included interviews, investigative stories, and anything deemed newsworthy, which of course included a recap from the latest school quidditch match and a quote from the winning team’s captain. By fourth year he was the quidditch commentator for all school matches, which he told people gave him better insight into the sport for his writing. By fifth year he was having funny feelings toward his long-time best friend and by sixth year he was dating any girl who’d have him just to keep himself from mucking up his friendship with Nelle. He left Hogwarts with a bit of a reputation as a ladies man. After school he took a job as an assistant at a bookshop in Diagon Alley, while also earning an internship at the Daily Prophet. He was promoted to a paid position shortly after, and was able to quit his job at the bookshop by the time he was 19. In his spare time, Kai would write stories and ended up selling some of them as novelettes to the bookshop owner he’d worked for previously. While Kai enjoyed his work at the newspaper, he found his passion was leaning more towards storytelling, so when he was only 22 years old he decided to dedicate himself fully to being an author. He quit his full-time job at the Daily Prophet, though he still takes some freelance projects when requested or when a good story comes his way he thinks should be shared. It was the party celebrating his first real professional success – selling his book to a real publisher with an option for a sequel if sales were decent – when Kai’s life seemed to take a dramatic shift. He’d been dating a witch, Margery, for about a year now, still trying to ignore his budding feelings for Nelle, when in a drunken stupor he found himself snogging Nelle in the cloak cupboard of the restaurant his friends and family (and girlfriend!) had all gathered at to congratulate him. Perhaps a bit overreactive, Kai proposed to Margery shortly after. He claims its because he loves Maggie but there’s a part of Kai that’s worried Nelle’s Seer ability will be able to deduct that this is subconsciously a ploy to keep the peace and minimize the awkwardness between the friends after taking their relationship in a direction that could completely shatter their lifelong friendship.
