All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
She was taking another bite of her sandwich when Julian’s words turned a bit too forward for her in that moment. Or maybe she was just reading into it something more than what he meant, but that smile was dangerous, and she knew all about dangerous smiles. Her cheeks flushed; eyes downcast as she finished the food in her mouth as quickly and politely as she could. Placing her hand in front of her mouth she asked, “so this is a date?” her eyes looking up though her head stayed tilted toward the floor. She swallowed her bite and set her sandwich on the plate, taking a moment to regain herself. “Because most of my dates aren’t quite so forward as to invite themselves to my place before we’ve even gotten dessert.” Not that she had had many dates recently, nor that there was time for dessert. She checked her watch under the table and confirmed her suspicions, her lunch break was nearly up.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
Rhia had heard of Daisy, but they’d not met before. She suspected that would change tonight if she was the reason they’d been extended an invite. There was only a teensy bit of jealousy in Rhia’s eyes whenever Julian spoke of any female friends. And of course, the feelings of jealousy would fester into guilt for not trusting well enough, then anger at Collin for making her that way, and then shame for being so pathetic that she would stay in such an obviously unhealthy relationship for as long as she had. And then Jules called her his girlfriend and Rhia smothered a large smile. “And you decided to bring me instead. You’re so sweet.” She let out a breathy laugh and leaned into him, all worries or jealousy gone for the moment. Julian pointed out Daisy on the dance floor just as the bartender set their drinks on the bar for them. Rhiannon took them with a “thank you” that went unheard as the man rushed to the next patrons. Rhia passed Julian his drink and then turned to look in the direction he’d indicated, heart sinking as she saw that Daisy was just as attractive as she’d pictured her being and of course dressed to the nines. “We’ll have to say hello when she’s not so busy.” Or when Rhiannon found something more dramatic to wear to match.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
To have the sort of freedom where you could just wander from camp lot to camp lot without any itinerary or scheduled plans seemed unreal to Rhia. Her life had been far too structured for far too long to ever be able to adjust to something like what Julian was describing, but boy did it sound amazing. “When I was little, I used to sleep in the back garden so I could watch the stars at night. I thought that if I could wish on a shooting star, it would give me whatever I wanted. Sadly, I still do not have a pony, so I think the stars might be broken, but they’re lovely to look at regardless.”

"Fun?” she repeated, finishing a bite of her sandwich and setting it back on her plate. “Oh, erm... Merlin, that shouldn’t be a difficult question, should it?” Rhia laughed, almost nervously, before pulling her thoughts together into a coherent response. “Well, I hike a lot. I enjoy being outside. There’s something freeing about a wide open space with a big sky overhead.” As opposed to what? A sky underneath you? What was she even saying right now?! “What about you?” she reciprocated the question, making sure to keep it vague so as to not put her foot in her mouth again so quickly.

"What indeed,” she giggled as Julian nipped at her neck playfully. His compliments were working and Rhia held her head a little higher as they headed to the bar. They stayed near the edges where there were less people and it was easier to move, and soon enough they were at the bar. Rhia waited for the bartender to finish up with another witch, and turned to Jules. “So how do you know the bloke hosting?” she asked, sure he had told her but not quite able to recall. She wanted to be ready in case there were introductions, and not put her foot in her mouth and embarrass them both. The bartender looked their way and Rhia leaned forward, pulling out of Jule’s grip for a moment as she said, “rum and coke, please.” Rhiannon turned quickly back to Jules to continue their conversation as soon as he had ordered his own drink.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
The first night she met Jules, she’d been worried she was underdressed for the gallery showing. Rolling up to a party that was supposed to be in a barn wearing jeans and a tank top should have been completely comfortable for Rhia, but the outfits on some of the witches they passed heading inside made Rhiannon worry that once again she'd severely underdressed for the occasion. At least she had Jules with her to make her feel more confident. He had a nasty habit of helping boost her self-esteem, and after the ups and downs of her previous relationships, it was a most welcomed change. Her thumb stroked the side of his hand as they walked into the beautifully decorated country shack, hand in hand, and Rhia took in even more extravagant outfits than the ones she’d seen outside. Merlin, she was already making a fool of herself. “Definitely drinking,” she said with a slight nervousness in her laughter. She then grinned at Jules and added “and definitely singing later.” As timid as Rhia normally was, she did have a bit of a wild side when she drank and what was a party without a little booze?

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
Rhiannon was not unfamiliar with putting her foot in her mouth, at least in her personal life. At work, in the courtroom, she was generally on point, if not a bit soft spoken at times, but she could argue her case quite well. Of course, she did research and planned out her line of questioning, her arguments, and her statements beforehand. Normal conversations did not permit planning beforehand, and that was where Rhia often got herself into trouble. There would be plenty of rewriting the conversation later, however, as she no doubt would spend an agonizing amount of time in her head coming up with every alternative question and comment to their current conversation and then berating herself for every little misstep she had actually made. At least Julian seemed to strong enough to not dwell on her mistake aloud. His hands turned over and for a moment their palms were touching in a much more intimate manner than she normally would have attempted so early on in a date. Or in a not-date, whichever this was better classified as.
The waitress came and Rhia pulled her hands back to her side of the table. Julian ordered his meal as Rhiannon looked down over the menu in front of her quickly. She already knew what she wanted but she liked to have a last look just to be sure. "A tea and a steak sandwich for me, please." She had a long day of work ahead of her, and she just didn't have the time to pretend she was the sort of girl that could be sustained by salads and light dressing.

Did? Rhia didn’t like the sound of that, and sure enough as Julian elaborated she felt the sinking sensation of regret at having asked what turned out to be a much more personal question than she had intended. “Oh, Merlin. I – ” Rhia reached her hands across the table and rested them atop Julian’s in a comforting manner. “I am so terribly sorry, Julian.” She had really put her foot in her mouth now, and they’d not even ordered yet! “You are so brave.” That was what people said in these situations, and yet it sounded moronic the second it had passed her lips.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
A four year old seemed awfully young and Rhia wondered exactly how long Julian and the child’s mother had been separated. Or were they still together and Julian was being a pompous cad flirting shamelessly with her when he had a doting wife waiting at home for him? Perhaps that was the real reason he hadn’t reached out since the gallery. Rhia hid her suspicions with a smile as she listened politely. “No children, myself. And no husbands.” Thankfully, she’d managed to dodge that hex, though not without enduring a little trauma. “I came close once, but life had other plans.” Merlin’s beard, why was she bringing up Collin on a date? Did this count as a date? It had been so long she’d nearly forgotten what it was like to be out with a bloke, but regardless, she didn’t need to be talking about Collin to Julian or anyone. “Do you get on Tristan’s mum? It must be hard having to share him.”

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
Alright, so he was cute and charming and now she could see he was good with his hands. There clearly had to be something wrong with this guy for him to be single. Rhia knew her faults, her own emotional baggage that she carried around day to day, so that at least explained why she wasn’t with anyone. Probably ever again, if she were to be completely truthful with herself. She couldn’t help but look for the faults in any potential partners, she couldn’t make the same mistakes as she had before and finding a reason to not get too close to someone was a surefire way to keep herself safe. But Julian thus far seemed like fun, and not necessarily the worrisome sort of fun, so she’d give him her 45 minutes and see where it took them. Julian handed her the potion as he opened the door for her, and Rhia smiled. “Thanks.” Stepping out into the sun, Rhiannon pulled the stopper on her pain potion and took a little sip, then closed it back up and tucked it away in her handbag.
The distraction of having someone to talk to on the walk certainly helped her headache to fade and by the time they arrived at a little bistro the potion had kicked in. She was feeling back to normal, with the exception of the butterflies that were doing cartwheels in her stomach. “So, you have a son?” she asked as they were seated. Or was he making that bit up? She ought to have been able to give him the benefit of the doubt but it was something she was still working on.

Her head was still pounding but it was becoming less noticeable as Rhia had something else to focus on now. She smiled. “If I say no, are you going to hold me potion captive?” she asked teasingly, still chewing on her lower lip in attempt to stop from grinning. “I’ve about 45 minute left before I need to be back, but won’t you be missed here?” She hadn’t seen anyone else in the quiet little shop but perhaps there was someone else in the back room to watch the store. Unless his version of ‘making it up to her’ was just a roll around the back stock room, in which case she wasn’t interested. Not that she wouldn’t love a tumble with the handsome bloke holding her potion hostage, but she wasn’t interested in someone who just wanted a quick shag and then to forget she’d ever existed. She’d done enough bystanding in relationships in the past to last a lifetime, and she had no intention of being used like that ever again.

His son colored on her card. Was this the adult version of 'my owl ate my homework'? Rhia supposed their excuses had to change somewhat from those they might have used when they were in school but it certainly seemed a right more plausible than when she'd falsely claimed she had accidentally used disappearing ink to write an essay for her Astronomy lesson. Julian joked about coming down to the Ministry to get another card and Rhiannon grinned. "Yes, terribly creepy. Good job dodging that hex, now I look like the creeper. You're welcome." Her eyes glanced to the bottle he still held in his hands, then back to his face. He had such a lovely smile, innocent yet still hiding a little secret. Just the teensiest hint of a bad boy. Her teeth chewed gently on her lower lip for a moment, waiting.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
She was still an hour from her lunch break when her headache hit. She’d been staring at parchment work all morning, trying to make heads or talons of this case she’d been working on for weeks now and having no luck. The legal precedents set by former administrations seemed to have no bearings in the world of today. Rhia was beginning to think her choice of career was a mistake. People being locked up simply because they refused to wear an armband or as a muggleborn worked for the Ministry. She tried to keep her in her own lane, but what was the point of fighting if the Wizengamot weren’t even going to listen to the testimony she presented them? The pounding behind her temples was in full bloom come her lunch hour, so Rhiannon apparated to Diagon Alley and headed straight for Slug and Jiggers to pick up a bottle of tension relieving potion.
The bell over the door chimed as she stepped inside, and she let the door swing shut of its own weight as she scanned the aisles looking for the pain relievers. Finding what she needed, she carried the blue bottle up to the counter and set it down for the clerk to ring up, blinking a few times and then smiling when she realized she knew the man. “You never called,” she said matter-of-factly, giving him a look. His name was Julian and he had hit on her at an art gallery several weeks ago then never rang. She smiled and then looked to her handbag to find her coin purse. He wouldn’t have been the first bloke to ghost her, and likely not the last. She didn’t hold any grudges, though she was the teensiest bit disappointed as the days stretched on and her phone continued to be silent. She pulled a few coins from her bag and placed them on the counter.

All your life you've never seen A woman taken by the wind
Julian pulled a face as he tried the champagne, and it made Rhia smirk. She’d had a taste for the drink for years now but she recognized that face very well and couldn’t help but relate. Red wines gave her that face, but she still tried it every time a client suggested it at one of their meetings. Anything to keep the client happy. Julian noted he wouldn’t be buying any art tonight and Rhiannon looked around at the selection surrounding them. She liked what she saw for the most part, but she was also not likely to walk out of here with an original piece under her arm. Probably not for the same reason she assumed Julian wasn’t buying. He clearly wasn’t a fan; the brushwork and whatever other flaws he had seen must have turned him off of it. Rhia simply didn’t have the money to buy, but it was fun to look regardless. One day, when she was more solidified in her career she would buy a whole sodding gallery full of fine art, but she had to be more selective for the time being. A cup of coffee was more her price, though the idea of leaving with a stranger made her a little on edge. “I appreciate the offer,” she said truthfully. Rhia shifted her glass into her other hand and pulled her handbag out from under her arm, popping the latch and fingering through the contents. “But I think I will have to take a raincheck. If she had had a few more glasses of champagne, or if this had been ten years ago, Rhia would have thought nothing of leaving a crowded party to go off somewhere private with a handsome gentleman, but she couldn’t even go to an art show without second guessing her choice of dress, she definitely wasn’t going home a stranger. "You should ring me sometime, Julian. If you’d like.” She found one of her business cards and handed it to him. It was an older one that still said she was an apprentice - they'd not gotten around to ordering her new ones just yet. There were more important fires being dealt with in the legal offices at the moment, and Rhia honestly didn't mind. She explained her position change to her clients but felt no need now. This wasn't a professional meeting, she just wanted him to have a way to get hold of her if he decided he still wanted her company for a coffee sometime.
