Death comes for us all in the end
Severus’ eyes turned up as he was called, though his long nose stayed pointed at the book her was reading. “I will get to your grade when I get to it, Miss Carrow.” His eyes traveled back to his book without giving her anymore of a response.

Death comes for us all in the end
Severus sat behind his desk, perusing a book on potion making that was well above the level of any of his current students. He pulled a quill from his desk and dipped the tip into an inkwell that was sat open on his desk, intended for grading but having done very little of it just yet. Instead, Severus made notes in the margins of the book as he read, mostly questions for himself or things he wanted to try. Later he would clear away his notes and start new ones in their place; improvements on the recipes as they were listed here. He had yet to meet a potions recipe that he couldn’t improve on. As Severus focused on his on work, the students began leaving their potions on his desk and packing up their bookbags. He said nothing to them as they began to trickle out of the dungeon classroom, his dark eyes flicking up every so often to ensure they were behaving.

Death comes for us all in the end
The interaction with Miss Carrow had already left Severus’ thoughts as he roamed the classroom and criticized the remainder of his students on their overall piss-poor attempts at their various potions. He knew from experience that the text was not the best approach to potion making, but as a new professor he wasn’t quite ready to step on toes by demanding a new textbook for his lessons. Not that such a demand would have mattered, there really weren’t many completely accurate tombs on the subject, at least not aimed at the grade levels he was now in charge of. Clearly the authors of these atrocities were more concerned with their sales numbers than of the accuracy or ease of their potions, making things much harder on the learning than was required. Still, that didn’t excuse their ignorance on the matter. Severus had devised a more efficient means to potion making, and so he expected his new charges to as well. He was just about to tell off Hammersmith for his untidy work space when a crash near the front of the dungeon claimed his attention. Curtains of black hair swung as Severus’ head turned swiftly in the direction of the sound, prepared to scold whomever had been the cause of the chaos. Alecto Carrow was on the floor, a pool of spilled potion before her. Severus approached, glowering at William Potts. “Twenty points from Hufflepuff for your carelessness, Potts. Now clean up this mess or it will be thirty.” The Hufflepuff boy stammered, attempting a defense but Severus scowled at him until he fell silent and began to mop up the mess with a rag. “Not like that, you brainless twit. Use your wand, unless you were intending to become Miss Carrow’s puppet for the next week.” Severus looked to Alecto on the floor then turned away. “Stopper your potions and leave them on my desk,” he said aloud to the class. “Failure to label them accurately will result in loss of marks.” He had been waiting for the end of class for what seemed like ages, a feeling that apparently did not diminish upon graduation, and he was happy the time had finally come.

Death comes for us all in the end
The pregnant pause in her statement was not overlooked by Severus but he couldn’t simply take points away from her for inferred impudence. Or perhaps he could. He was the professor now, after all. He was not teaching the subject he had wanted but he was teaching nonetheless. There was a certain level of power that came with his new title and so perhaps he ought to wield it as he pleased. Severus’ narrow gaze lingered on Alecto Carrow for a moment, contemplating the ramifications of reckless corruption of power but thought better of it for the time being. “Very good, then.” He turned and continued on, pacing between the desks and commenting as he saw fit.

Death comes for us all in the end Potions. Severus had always been brilliant with potions, never following the book but perfecting the recipes himself. He’d marked up his own text only a few years ago when he’d been a student here but he had transferred all of the correct potions instructions into a tome of his own and no longer had a need for the little textbook that had been with him for so many years now. His schoolbook was gathering dust with a tiny collection of used texts, stashed away should a student misplace their own book someday. He had planned to leave his books behind and forget about them, except for Defense Against the Dark Arts text but his time as the DADA professor’s assistant had proved pointless. Dumbledore clearly had no intention of permitting him his preferred post. Being offered Potions Master as an alternative was either a pity or a ploy, of which Severus was sure either one was carefully calculated by the Headmaster with more than one purpose in mind but fat chance Severus had of finding out the inner workings of the older wizard. He took his lumps and accepted the position, having already completed half a year as a full-fledged professor.
Double lessons were tedious with the wrong class, but todays had been rather run of the mill. He paced the classroom, pointing out any missteps by the students and giving curt praises to those who actually listened to the instructions he’d provided them. A longing scent of flower blossoms and dirt caught his attention and Severus double backed to a cauldron he’d just passed without acknowledgement. The potion smelled of Lily, of the park where they first met and of the dirt near the Black Lake where they used to sit together and talk before Potter came and ruined everything. He might have smiled at the comforting scent but his thoughts of Lily were often disturbed by reminders of James Potter, the pretentious git who’d turned Lily away from him. He sneered and looked analytically at the student sat in front of the offending cauldron. “It appears you’ve learned how to follow directions, Miss Carrow. Well done.” His last words were short and clipped, minimizing the praise that followed the backhanded compliment he had given her. Amycus’ little sister; no doubt she got enough praise from her family, she didn’t need to be spoilt with it at school.

Death comes for us all in the end
The sounds from Diagon Alley weren’t concerning to Severus, as the place was bustling and always at least a little loud. He took the steps one at a time, watching his feet so that he needed make accidental eye contact with someone and be forced to either greet them politely or ignore them purposefully. Eyes to the ground meant you could feign ignorance in their presence and that was just the sort of socializing Sev was looking for today. Anymore than that and he’d had to hide in his parents’ house for a few days, avoiding people. Severus was the typical introvert, only reaching out of his comfort zone if something was really worth it. Like Lily. She’d been worth it completely. Lily was the opposite, an extrovert. It was fitting, as opposites attract, and she could nudge Severus into doing things he wasn’t always comfortable with and he could encourage her to take a night in for herself once in a while. They really were quite wonderful together, before Potter.
Potter seemed to be where his thoughts eventually always turned to as of late, and it was maddening. He was beginning to be concerned that he was becoming obsessed, but everyone knew that if you were aware of a problem then it couldn’t be that much of a problem. Take his father for instance. Tobias was a drunk if there ever was one, yet the man had no sodding clue that there was anything amiss. No recognition of the problem, ergo it’s a problem. Severus was fine, though he’d be more fine when Lily had called off her impulsive marriage and came back to the man who truly loved her.
Thinking on Lily was much more preferable than obsessing on Potter, but the distracted thoughts of their possible life together were short-lived as a bird cage came clanking down the steps nearly causing Severus to trip. He stumbled, but recovered thanks to a high, wide step that left him practically straddling the cage. “What the bloody hell is this, then?” he asked angrily to anyone and no one in particular. Grabbing the handle at the top of the cage, he pulled it out from between his legs with great force, smacking the bottom end into the brick building that lined the stairs.

Death comes for us all in the end
Black eyes scanned the sparse crowd, not searching for anything or anyone in particular but taking stock of his surroundings. Knockturn Alley was dimly lit, the tall, crooked buildings rising up several stories on all sides, blocking out any direct light. Stepping out of the apothecary shop, Severus was nearly trampled by a much taller, portly hag that grumbled offensive mutterings at him as she pushed forward, heading further into the alley with her shopping. Severus had only needed a few items, enough to fill the pockets of his robes but left his hands free throw a crude gesture silently at the back of the hag as she stalked away. She disappeared around a shaded corner. Sev turned, a sneer on his lips, and sighed heavily. He had no plans for the day beyond his shopping, and his work at Spinner’s End still needed to bubble for a few more days before he could complete it. Skulking, Severus turned and headed toward the small turn and steps that would lead him back into Diagon Alley, having spent his wages on the supplies he needed to complete his potion.
Lily was married now but that wouldn’t last. She would come to her senses and leave that bullying bastard Potter, even if she needed a little push in the proper direction. Lily and Sev had been inseparable until Potter and his gang of cruel tits had interfered but Severus was hopeful. He could get things back on track with a little potion, and then when the effects wore off Lily would recognize that she’d been hypnotized by Potter and that she really did belong with Severus. He knew her completely, he loved her, and they were meant to spend their lives together. Sev was better for Lily than Potter in every regard. Severus understood the hateful homelife Lily came from, he witnessed her sister’s abject repulsion to magic just as his father had done to him. Potter came from pompous wealth that encouraged his undeserved arrogance. What could he know of Lily’s origins and the mental scars that trauma would leave? Potter didn’t even work! Severus was well on his way to a position as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts. He was an assistant now, but he was learning and developing his skills as an instructor. He had a respectable job unlike the spoiled, egotistical Potter. Severus clenched his jaw and sneered to himself as James Potter overtook his thoughts, making his way up the steps toward the bright, sunny street of Diagon Alley.

PERSONALITY Boggart: Lord Voldemort raising Lily's dead corpse
Mirror of Erised: Himself and Lily, married and smiling
Patronus: Doe - Recently having learned to produce a patronus, Severus summons the memory of learning that Lily was a witch and would be joining him at Hogwarts
Generally, Severus is unpleasant to be around and generally a frightening presence. He heavily favors Slytherins in his role as professor’s apprentice, which may seem unfair, but he finds himself protective of his snakes and the stereotypes they face. He is suspicious, constantly on-guard and not inviting of idle conversation or fancy claptrap; he much prefers to-the-point communication and not being jerked around like some tool.
Severus is a complicated and deeply scarred man who does not show his emotions easily, with the exception of anger, a trait he inherited from his father. He has a great respect for intelligence and selflessness, one a trait he knows well and the other something he wish he had more of.
HISTORY Mother: Eileen Snape nee Prince, 51, Slytherin, pureblood Father: Tobias Snape, 48, muggle Siblings: none Partners: none Others: Lily Joanne Potter former best friend & current love (unrequited)
Born to Eileen and Tobias Snape in early January, Severus’ birth was supposed to signify a new beginning for the Snapes who had had several rocky years together since they married in 1956. Tobias was a cruel man, happy to tear his wife away from her friends and the remaining family that had accepted her even after announcing herself a bloodtraitor by marrying a muggle man. The newlywed bliss was short-lived and soon the couple had moved away from the little social life Eileen had left in Blackpool, making their new home in Cokeworth. Tobias would yell and berate his wife as she tried her best to keep him happy and make a life for themselves. Out of desperation, Eileen convinced Tobias that they should have a child, assuming a baby would bring our Tobias’ softer side but Severus seemed to have the opposite affect on the man. Tobias began drinking more to cope with the stress of a crying child, which only seemed to heighten his anger which he directly at Eileen. As a small child, Severus was confined to his bedroom, a tiny room he shared with stacks of cardboard boxes full of old linens and dusty photo albums Eileen had not been permitted to unpack after their move several years earlier. Whenever Severus even dared to open his bedroom door, whether to dash to the bathroom or attempt to sneak something to eat from the kitchen between meals, Tobias would chastise the boy for interrupting his private time. During the day, Severus would be sent outside to play, not permitted back into the house until well after dark, even if it were raining, snowing, or a blistering heat that caused his unnaturally pale skin to turn a vibrant pink color. Severus was seven the first time his father hit him. He had been playing in the garden when it began to rain. The wind picked up and soon enough thunder was cracking down the otherwise silent street. A loose tree branch broke and fell into the garden, scaring Severus who ran for the safety of his kitchen, tracking in muddy footprints that led his father right to him. Eileen continued fixing tea, pretending she did not hear what was happening behind her back in the very same room. Severus went to bed without eating, his hands sore from scrubbing the floor with his toothbrush and his face warm with the bruise that would ensure he never muddied his mum’s kitchen again. The only relief he had from his father was when Tobias went to work, an ever-changing schedule as the man was constantly between jobs having been fired more times than Severus was able to count. The days when Tobias had no job to go to, having been laid off because of his volatile temper or having slept so long in his drunkenness that he missed his shift (and was consequently sacked), Sev found peace watching his peers play at a nearby park. He was never invited to play, often teased for his shabby clothes or the welts and cuts still visible under his shaggy hair, but there was one girl who had always seemed nicer than the others and he liked her. For weeks he called her “the little redheaded girl” whenever his mum asked where he’d been and professing her surprise that he had any friends, claiming to be happy that he was such a social boy. He wasn’t though, and it took a rather long time before Severus finally worked up the nerve to talk to the little redheaded girl after seeing that had done accidental magic. She was a witch! He tried to explain it to the girl and her boring sister. After that, he felt more confident approaching her. He even learned her name; Lily. It was a beautiful name for a beautiful witch and Severus was pleased to be able to share his intimate knowledge of the wizarding world with her, as she had been born to a muggle family and had no knowledge of even the most basic of magical things. Severus promised to be her guide. When their Hogwarts letters came, Severus was overjoyed though he had learned to keep much of his happier emotions to himself. Smiles and laughter were not well received in the Snape household, but soon he wouldn’t have to abide by his father’s strict hand and his mother wouldn’t have to pretend to ignore the abuse her husband inflicted upon her only child. Ignorant to the lives of his parents as all children are, Severus didn’t realize that his mother’s tears at Platform Nine and Three Quarters were not about missing him over the upcoming school year, but fear for what would become of herself without Tobias’ whipping boy to take his frustration on. Unaware of the turmoil mounting at home, Severus sat happily on the Hogwarts Express with his friend Lily, talking excitedly about all the newfound freedoms they would have being in the world of magical folk. His heart nearly shattered when Lily was sorted into Gryffindor. He admitted to the Sorting Hat that he knew he was not brave enough to fit in with the house of the lion, and sure enough he was sorted into his mother’s former house; Slytherin. He and Lily still spent plenty of time together, despite their different common rooms, but he grew jealous of her Gryffindor friends for all the time she was able to spend with them. He retaliated by trying to make his friends in his own house, a task he found difficult. Often the butt of cruel practical jokes from boys of all houses, Severus found kinship in a certain gang of young wizards. They picked on anyone they felt was beneath them, usually the muggleborns or the very poor. Severus was the lowest ranking boy in the group, even if no one – himself included – ever outright stated such a thing as fact, Sev knew it to be true but it was better than having no friends at all. Despite making friends, Severus spent much of his time alone, studying in darkened corners and trying to hide from the boys who had come to make his life at Hogwarts a living hell. In fifth year, James Potter and gang of Gryffindor gits played yet another heinous prank on Severus, pulling his trousers down in front of the entire school, Lily included. To make matters worse, Lily hammered yet another nail in his coffin when she started yelling at Potter about the incident, as if Severus was incapable of standing up to the bullies himself. He wasn’t weak as she assumed him to be, and he was more than capable of retaining his dignity without the need of a stupid mudblood! She refused to speak with him after that. The years following the incident were spent trying to apologize, to make it up to her, and hating her for making the embarrassing ordeal that much worse. His hatred for Potter and his mates only intensified when it became apparent that Lily held affections for James. Sev would no longer passively detest Potter, Black, Pettigrew, and Lupin but he began to actively plot their downfall. It only became that much easier when Severus was introduced to a man who called himself Lord Voldemort who promised evil men like his father would never again be able to hurt him. When the subject of Potter and Black was broached, Voldemort simply smiled and told Severus not to worry about the bloodtraitors. He was sold. Following his graduation from Hogwarts, Severus took a position at the very school he had just left, as a professor’s assistant for Defense Against the Dark Arts. The staff never seemed to hold that professor long, every year a new DADA professor was announced and by the end of term they were gone for one reason or another. Severus thought he could change that, and taking on the position of apprentice would surely claim him the coveted role once he’d learned enough. His future appointment as DADA professor could be useful to the Dark Lord as well, and with Severus rising in the ranks he was sure to get a little helping hand when the time came. All he had to do was please Lord Voldemort, who had already infiltrated the Ministry of Magic, and then the professor position would be his. At least, that was Severus’ plan. In January of this year, Severus took to spying on Headmaster Dumbledore for the Dark Lord, overhearing an important prophecy about Voldemort’s demise. His eavesdropping was halted by Aberforth of the Hog’s Head and Severus was booted from the premises, but he took the news to Lord Voldemort eagerly and without hesitation. The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...
