A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Hazel liked giving her pets clever names, naming things had always been quite fun and had she not been fully aware of the bullying dangers of young children, her own daughter Sophie might have been named something a little more outlandish. Alvin had chosen the name Sophie and it fit their daughter perfectly. Looking at that angelic little face in her arms that first night so many years ago, Hazel knew there was no other name that could possibly fit her better. Barkimedes, on the other hand, was a different story. There was little sentimental connection behind the name, Hazel just found it amusing. “He’s just so bloody smart, aren’t you?” she said in a hushed voice as she spoke to both the dog and Gus simultaneously. She looked fully at Gus and gave a clever grin. “Smart pup needs a smart name. Don’t tell me you’ve never gotten creative with all your creatures’ names.” Hazel spoke as she headed into the kitchen, gesturing for Gus (and Barkimedes) to follow.
The kitchen was moderately sized and well overstocked, a habit of her mum’s that Hazel had learned to accept. Did they need twelve cans a tomato sauce? Of course not, but Susan Peters wasn’t taking any chances that there wouldn’t be another world war that would find them stuck in their tiny village while the muggles sought to destroy each other. Luckily, Hazel had a knack for keeping a tidy home and if you didn’t know that the cupboard was stuffed full to the brim, you’d think it was just a normal kitchen. It made offering Gus a drink easier and more difficult at the same time though. Hazel rambled off a little list of some options for him to choose from; more beer, whiskey, sherry, wine, or tequilla if Gus felt like being crazy. The dog trotted into the kitchen behind them, still sniffing at Gus’ jacket and trousers.

Creative with names was not Gus' forte. Heck, he couldn't even come up with a name for his own daughter! His ex had decided on the name Remy, something fashionable probably but it was well worn by his daughter. She was a wonderful mix of fashionable and caring. Gus missed her terribly while she was away at school but it always made him smile when he got letters from her. He made sure to stay in contact every week and while his French was worse than ever, Remy was fluent having learnt with ease as she grew up, her mother conversing with her in French was something that had never bothered Gus, although he was sometimes curious as to what they would be saying to one another. Still it was none of his business and so he lept out of it usually, unless they started chuckling with one another. Oh those were happier times. And now what was happening? He was in a colleagues kitchen, most certainly drunk and needing to make his way back up a bloody hill to hopefully fall in his bed with enough coordination that he didn't wake up with a wickedly sore back in the morning.
"Honestly, I can say I'm terrible at names. I had a dog once and I couldn't think of a name. After a month of mum nagging I finally called it 'Woofer', truly, I shouldn't be allowed to name anything." He chuckled, looking about the kitchen that they walked in to, finding it quaint and rather reflective of Hazel. It was exactly the type of kitchen you'd expect her to have somehow. The dog was still sniffing about Gus' legs but he paid the mini-beast no attention, "A beer would be great, thanks." He smiled, knowing that he really shouldn't be having another, not now and especially not while he was already drunk, but there was something compelling him to stay, have another drink, spend a bit more time with Hazel. She really was a fabulous woman.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
Had anyone else mentioned the name Woofer for their dog and Hazel would have pulled a face but somehow it was endearing that Gus had taken a whole month to come up with the absolute worst name for a pet. The story made her smile. “Well,” she said as she pulled out two bottles of beer and set one on the counter in front of Gus. “Next time you’re in need of a name, you come to me. Your furry friends will be in good company with Barkimedes and Clawdia,” she said in a cheery tone. “That’s the cat,” she explained with a playful wink. Pulling her wand out of a hidden pocket in her dress, Hazel uncapped the beer bottles with a gentle flourish of the wrist. “Cheers,” she said, raising her bottle towards his.
Hazel leaned against the kitchen counter facing Gus as Barkimedes seemed to have given up on trying to lap up the spilled beer that he clearly thought smelled like something more exciting. The friendly dog moved a few paces towards Hazel then plopped himself on the tiled floor at her feet. Hazel chuckled. She was looking at the dog but her mind was still stuck on Gus’ old pup. “Woofer,” she said with a laugh and a slight shake of her head. She couldn’t get the name out of her head. It wasn’t all that funny, but she’d had enough to drink that anything mildly amusing was going to stick around for a bit. Like Helley’s insinuations back at the pub, that was laughable. Helley could be insightful when she wanted to be, but she could also be crass and daring and saying that Hazel and Gus had anything but friendly feelings for each other was daring indeed. Sure, Gus was attractive, and funny. Smart. A genuinely nice bloke. Brilliant with children, and knew how to have a good time. Of course there was some level of attraction there, how could there not be? Gus took a sincere interest in things that were important to her and never failed to make her smile. He had such a nice smile, too. The way his eyes crinkled when he laughed and how his smile was always a little higher on one side. That cute little dimple in his chin. So caught up in rationalizing away Helley’s perfectly ridiculous point in her own head, Hazel didn’t realize she’d gone quiet. Taking notice of herself, she realized she’d been staring at Gus’ mouth and without thinking she leaned in and pressed her lips to his.

Next time. He'd certainly think of Hazel the next time he had a pet to name. It was entirely possible that Remy would want a say in naming any pet that he got but he'd happily let Hazel and Remy concoct some kind of genius name between the two of them. Gus figured that Remy would probably get on well with Hazel. She'd been talking of moving to the UK to be closer to him once she was graduated but Gus was sure she'd miss the beautiful weather the south of France had to offer, besides, she had her mum, her step dad and her whole circles of family and friends there, he didn't want her moving just for him, it would be a mistake. She was so young, she had a lot she needed to do. Travelling was something Gus completely encouraged. She needed to see the world. He and her mother had missed out when they were young. They tried so hard to keep a roof over their heads, give Remy a life she deserved and in the end that life ended up being in France and he was okay with that, he'd accepted it a long time ago.
His thoughts stopped as he looked at Hazel. There was a pause but he didn't think of it as awkward because while he'd stopped thinking of one thing, he was now entirely focused on another. Hazel was amazing. That wasn't just a compliment in his mind that he'd keep to himself, he'd outright tell her once he was sober enough but right now he realised that wasn't appropriate because she was being kind enough to take him in and help him sort his sorry arse out with a clean, fresh jacket that wasn't covered in beer. She was making sure that even though he was a little on the tipsy side (okay, a lot) that he would be okay. Who even did that? She was incredible! Other people had just laughed at him but Hazel had taken him home and was looking out for him and she looked so incredibly hot in that outfit that Gus wasn't sure he'd be able to keep his hands to himself for much - Hazel was on him. Her lips at least. They were pressing against him and his hands found their way to her hips without skipping a beat. Oh Merlin this was divine! Her lips were soft and he could taste traces of her drink. All of his other senses were completely shut off to the world, all he could focus on was Hazel and how right this felt.
As the kiss came to a close Gus pulled away, his upper body wobbling a little as he found his centre of gravity. "That's unacceptable," He told her, "I was totally going to kiss you first." He leant in once more, pressing his lips to hers because this should have happened sooner, he could feel his excitement getting the better of him already. He had no thoughts beyond the here and now. He couldn't have thought of anything other than Hazel and doing all kinds of wonderful things to her, even if he'd tried. He was lost in the moment, lost to her and it was a perfect way to finish up the first "staff meeting" of the year.

A happy soul is the best shield for a cruel world
She wasn’t sure what had made her do it but she knew it had very little to do with the fact that she’d been drinking. Kissing Gus just felt right. He was the right amount of tender and strength, and within half a second of their lips meeting his hands were on her hips and she could feel herself melting into him. She smiled lightly as the kiss ended, feeling a sinking sensation in her chest for only a moment when Gus claimed the act to be unacceptable but the moment quickly passed as he continued speaking and then once again his lips were on hers.
This wasn’t the sort of thing Hazel did. She wouldn’t look down on anyone for fooling around with a friend, or even a stranger, and she certainly wasn’t chaste enough to think a couple needed to be married before giving themselves away to another person but she hadn’t done this before. It had been a long while since she’d been with anyone other than her husband but she didn’t give it a second thought. It seemed such a natural act to forget about their drinks as they snogged in the kitchen long enough for the dog to realize he was being ignored and wander off to find his bed.
Hazel didn’t remember making a conscious decision to lead Gus upstairs, sneaking past her parents’ bedroom as they made their way to her room where she was pushed against the door by another round of kisses from Gus, effectively shutting the door and affording them some much needed privacy. She wasn’t even sure whether it had been her idea or not but she was definitely on board with all of it, and when the sun dawned the next morning she had no regrets over what had transpired in the night.
