PERSONALITY Boggart: Andromeda's Boggart would manifest itself as her daughter, dead on the floor in front of her after encountering her older sister. Mirror of Erised: Herself holding hands with her two sisters, reconciled at last. Patronus: Mink - Her happiest memory is the first time that her daughter told her that she loved her- something that she never felt able to tell her own mother. Quiet and unassuming initially, Andromeda conceals a streak of Gryffindor bravery with a sly streak which could equip half a dozen Slytherins. She possesses a lively brain which is constantly working away, devising plots, plans and schemes. Andromeda is quite happy to admit that she is ambitious, and she works hard to achieve these ambitions, always planning the best ways to advance herself and her career. Although she would never admit it to anyone, her mission is to prove, both to herself and to the rest of the world, that she can make a success of herself without having to resort to the Black family name. Love is very important to Andromeda- she abandoned her prestige and her position in society in order to marry the man she loved, and coped bravely with the consequences. Beneath a calm, composed demeanour, Andromeda hides a fundamental lack of confidence in herself. Despite a childhood spent listening to lectures on pureblood superiority over the Muggles, the girl's analytical brain was never satisfied with the explanations presented, which led to a lack of belief in just about everything that the world around her took for granted. She hid it well and did her best to be the dutiful pureblood lady that she was expected to be, but it was never going to work out. HISTORY Mother: Druella Black, Slytherin, pureblood. Father: Cygnus Black, Slytherin, pureblood. Siblings: Bellatrix Lestrange n. Black, 27, Slytherin, pureblood. Narcissa Malfoy n. Black, 23, Slytherin, pureblood. Partners: Ted Tonks, 26, Muggleborn. Others: Daughter: Nymphadora Tonks, 6, halfblood. Born into a proud and ancient pureblood family, Andromeda grew up as the second of three sisters, looking up to Bellatrix and doing her best to help Narcissa. She spent much of her youth being instructed in the correct manners and etiquette for a young lady of the House Black and, being eager to please her family, did rather well. However, she did not do so well in some other lessons to which she was subjected, having an inquiring mind which led to her asking some questions that her tutors did not approve of any more than her father did. However, she quickly learned that asking the wrong kinds of questions would lead to punishment- an ordeal which she was definitely not willing to repeat. As a child and a teenager, Andromeda constantly felt as though she was a disappointment to the entirety of her family, and although she was close to her sisters, she never dared to be as open with them as she would have liked to be. In truth, she was constantly worried about one thing or another, and nothing more so than the fact that she could not bring herself to believe what her family would have had her believe. They all seemed quite happy to accept that purebloods were better than Muggleborns simply because that was what they had always believed, but Andromeda had a scientific mind, and it craved solid facts, backed up by evidence. Evidence which simply wasn't there. From the age of about seven, therefore, she kept her thoughts to herself, she did her best to think what she was expected to think and, for a time, she almost thought that she'd succeeded. Bellatrix, she knew, had no such problems. Her older sister was firmly convinced of her own superiority, and Andromeda would later regret having encouraged Narcissa to follow along that path. At the time, however, it seemed the right thing to do. Having different ideas would have put her younger sister in danger, and that was something which Andromeda was very keen to avoid, with the first emergence of some maternal instincts which would only grow stronger later in life. In any case, Narcissa seemed to take well to it, and so by the time that she started at Hogwarts, Andromeda felt like the odd one out in the family. She was sorted into Slytherin, much to her own private relief since she'd been rather worried that she might end up in Ravenclaw, and found relatively quickly that, whilst the majority of her Housemates shared the Black view of things, there were a select few from pureblood families who actually found it as difficult as she did to keep up the correct facade. On one hand, Andromeda was relieved to find that she wasn't alone- on the other, she felt as though, having discovered this, they really ought to do something about it. But what? Nothing, was the short answer, at least for a few years. But Andromeda grew rapidly less and less happy with the ideals of blood purity, finding time and time again that Muggleborns did as well as or even better than the pureblood students in every class, except possibly flying- and who cared about flying? Deciding that she really couldn't conform to expectations, she did her best nevertheless and escaped notice for quite some time. In her sixth year, Andromeda found herself increasingly attracted to a Muggleborn boy in her year, Ted Tonks and, what was more, she was reliably informed that he rather liked her too. In the normal way of things, that would have been fine and dandy, but things were somewhat more complicated in her case. Her parents would have killed her... Well, no, they'd probably have been more likely to kill him and subject her to some horribly ingenious torture. And that left her with a number of options, none of which particularly appealed. She could carry on a relationship in secret. She could tell her parents, throw off her facade and live her life the way she wanted to. Or she could tell him to sling his hook and carry on as she was. It took a lot of thought, and Andromeda took a lot of time in which to do the thinking, so that it was almost the end of her seventh year by the time that she finally got around to taking any kind of action. Finally, though, she took a decision. She was going to ask the boy out, and hang the consequences. The second Black daughter was tired of trying to be someone she wasn't. And so when Andromeda Black received her NEWT results, she did so alongside Ted Tonks- standing in his mother's kitchen. Because of course there was no way that her parents would ever allow her to continue as a member of the Black family with a Muggleborn boyfriend. It would have sullied their precious honour. Things could have gone terribly wrong but, fortunately for Andromeda, they didn't. She became Andromeda Tonks three days after her eighteenth birthday, inviting only her sisters and Sirius from her own family. No prizes for guessing who turned up. By this point, Andromeda had embarked upon her training to become a Healer in the Spell Damage ward of St. Mungo's, which she completed at the top of her class, and seemed well on track to become the hospital's fastest-rising Healer when an event occurred which even she had not been able to foresee. She fell pregnant. Andromeda had many worries as she watched her belly swell as the months went by. She had hardly had the best mother as a role model, after all, and she didn't have a clue what she should be doing. No doubt her mother-in-law would have been happy to help, had she not passed away soon before owing to a sudden illness. And so Andromeda was alone as she embarked on her next great adventure, as someone else had once put it. Things didn't go as badly as she'd expected. In point of fact, she had a comparatively easy labour and, despite a definite lack of sleep, she really enjoyed her early days with her daughter. Being a mother, Andromeda had decided, was what she was designed to do, and she loved it. Watching her daughter grow up was the most magical experience of a very magical life. There came a point, however, where Andromeda found that she had no choice; she had to go back to work. Had she remained as a Black, she could probably have lived three lives quite comfortably without ever having had to lift a finger for herself, but things were different as a Tonks, and so once her daughter was aged six and comfortably established at a nursery school, Andromeda applied for a position teaching her favourite subject and one on which she had written a series of articles for the Prophet- Arithmancy- at Hogwarts, on the proviso that she could return home each evening.
