Connection to the Order: As a driven and intelligent student, Augusta caught the attention of the Headmaster even when she was at Hogwarts during the Second World War, and her relatively rapid ascension through the ranks of the Ministry was a testimony to her qualities. In later years, she associated with her former teacher on a reasonably frequent basis due to his position with the Wizengamot and her own position within the Ministry, and so when it became abundantly clear that Voldemort's return was ongoing and that the Ministry was unlikely to be capable of stopping him and might even be an obstruction, Dumbledore saw in her a useful opportunity to keep a close eye on the workings of magical government and, in addition to her individual talents, this prompted him to offer her a position with the Order.
Useful Skills: Augusta is a skilled duellist and has acquired a working knowledge of several languages through her former position in the Department for International Magical Cooperation.
Useful Affiliations: As one of the Minister's closest advisors, Augusta has her ear to the beating heart of the Ministry and generally has a pretty fair idea of what's going on in the corridors of power.
Why join the Order of the Phoenix? Augusta was brought up with a very strict sense of right and wrong, and she conforms to the popular belief that murder is unacceptable. In addition to this, she finds discrimination of any kind to be incredibly distasteful; she lost her father to the forces acting under a man, albeit a Muggle, who discriminated against vast sections of society with horrific consequences, and she has lost dear, close friends to the Dark Lord's followers over more recent years. She does not forgive or forget easily, being far more likely to hold a grudge indefinitely than to allow things to blow over, and whilst it might sound clichéd, she is determined that the people who caused those deaths should get what is coming to them. 'An eye for an eye' is certainly a part of her personal philosophy. While her son might be in his twenties, she is still his mother and determined to protect him which, in her view, means that she should leave the world as a better place for him to live in. Augusta is immensely proud of Frank's work as an Auror to improve things for everyone and, while she will never admit it, she is determined to prove to the world that it was from her that the desire to do this originated.
