PERSONALITY Boggart: Her son dead on the floor. Mirror of Erised: Herself surrounded by all the friends and relatives that she has lost over the years. Patronus: Fox - The moment that she held her son in her arms for the first time. Augusta doesn't suffer fools gladly; she has little patience with procrastinators and time wasters, and she makes this very clear. She's never been afraid to share her opinions, although no doubt some people would rather that she was, and she certainly knows her own mind, never allowing anyone else to talk her out of something that she particularly wants to do. Quite prepared to fight for what she believes in, she scorns those who do not do likewise, believing them to be infirm of purpose and not worth her time. She also has a strong and well-developed sense of right and wrong, and is well aware that law and justice are not necessarily the same thing. Determination is another of her defining qualities; once she has set her mind to something, Augusta will keep on working at it until she is satisfied that she has either achieved her goal or proved it to be entirely impossible. Insurmountable odds seldom deter her, and her age has not slowed her down in the slightest- in fact, she maintains that she is improving with age. Augusta has a saying for every occasion, and will repeat it regardless of how many times her audience has already heard it. She has a fierce pride in her lineage and her family, but maintains that looking down on others for the same thing is simply bad manners and would devalue the entire history of her name. Her most predominant fault is her stubbornness; she will stick to a viewpoint regardless of whether it is correct or not. However, she also has a lack of tact which can sometimes be quite upsetting. HISTORY Mother: Elizabeth Macmillan n. Fawley, deceased, Slytherin, pureblood. Father: Harold Macmillan, deceased, Gryffindor, pureblood. Siblings: James Macmillan, 45, Ravenclaw, pureblood. Partners: David Longbottom, 58, Gryffindor, pureblood, healer. Others: SON; Frank Longbottom, 21, Gryffindor, pureblood, Auror. Augusta was born in the March of 1929 and grew up in the Macmillan family home in the Highlands of Scotland. She demonstrated accidental magic soon after her second birthday, causing the destruction of a cabinet full of valuable antique china, and this proved to only be the beginning of the problems which she caused for her parents. Her stubbornness caused many arguments between her and her parents as she grew up, always wanting to know the reason behind everything- why she had to go to bed, why the sky was blue and a million other questions. It was, in fact, with a slight sense of relief that her father waved her off on the Hogwarts Express when she turned eleven, thinking that perhaps now, at last, some of her interminable questions might be answered. This was in 1940, and the Second World War was at its height, so that Augusta was constantly distracted throughout her first year by news from the Muggle world- it was in March of that year that she received a letter from her mother telling her that her father had died in a bombing raid on London. She had always been very close to her father, so that this news rocked Augusta's world to its very foundations. For nearly a week, she spoke to practically no one, keeping herself very much to herself and hiding in her work, spending far too much time in the library. Eventually, however, a friend more or less dragged her out of both the library and her misery, and Augusta promised herself that she would never be so foolish again. Her school years passed more or less without incident; Augusta failed only one of her OWLs, much to her mortification- it was Charms- and developed a strong dislike for the subject as a consequence. She passed all her NEWTs with flying colours and took a position in the Department of International Magical Cooperation, in the Office of Magical Law. Her hard work and habitual determination quickly brought her a name as a woman who could be counted on, and as such, she won rapid promotion, making her way up through the ranks. Augusta met David when she was being treated for a minor case of burning occasioned by a letter from an irate member of the public- she always said that he healed her hand and broke her heart. The two were married when she was 27 and he was 35, and she gave birth to Frank two years later. Being a driven woman, Augusta didn't rest on her laurels, and she was soon back to work, becoming one of the youngest Heads of Department at 30. Everything looked set to go well, and she was beginning to aspire to becoming the next Minister for Magic when calamity struck, and she was deprived of her husband in a freak accident. That put paid to her ambitions for the moment, to say the least, and for only the second time in her life, Augusta gave herself up to grief. She and her husband had been deeply in love, and the loss was calamitous for her. This time, though, it was her job that pulled her back- the Minister offered her a position in his office, and she was in no position to refuse even if she had wanted to, with a young son to support and having been deprived of her husband's income. She took the position of Senior Undersecretary, which she has occupied ever since. It wasn't an easy job, and it only got harder as worries over Voldemort's activities grew. During the first half of the 1970s, Augusta had the bad luck to lose seven of her closest and oldest friends, but for these sad occasions, she did not collapse totally as she had done before. Instead, she ploughed on- growing more and more worn and haggard- in an effort to make sure that they had not died in vain. Ministers came and went, of course, but the job stayed the same, and Augusta did it well. There came a point, however, where she decided that the Ministry alone was not going to resolve the issue. Remembering the success of her old friend, Albus Dumbledore, against Grindelwald so many years ago, she reached out to him, and found that he had had much the same thought.
