I promise to keep you safe always and forever
A pet cat. Yet another creature to love and bond with, that will ultimately die before anyone is ready for it to happen and leave Dorian, and this time Ariel, heartbroken. He did not like the sound of owning a cat at all, but of course if Ariel wanted one he had no real objections behind his own selfish insecurities and history of lost loved ones. Ariel was still an infant and unable to make decisions about whether or not she wanted a pet. She looked equally as transfixed at her own reflection as she did at the animals in cages along the walls of the tiny wizarding pet shop. “Having pets is somewhat inevitable when raising children, I imagine. They sort of go hand in hand, don’t they? I will just count myself lucky she hasn’t shown an interest in something wilder than a housecat.” Ariel let out a happy squeal as she shook her octopus around and banged it on the edge of her buggy. Dorian looked down at her and smiled. “Did you have any animals growing up? River, as much as she liked to chat, had not mentioned anything about pets. I suspect she would have given her daughter anything she wanted, though, and I am prepared to do the same.”
Dorian did not mean to insinuate that Ariel would be staying with him now that Julian had come into her life, however suddenly and, frankly, unexpectedly. Except that, yes, he did. River and Bert had been dead for four months and without any updated contact information for her rightful next of kin, Julian, Ariel had risked being sent to an orphanage. Dorian had fought hard to gain custody of his niece to ensure she never felt cast aside or unwanted as most orphans did. It was a task which had not been easy, but luckily River’s work at the hospital had already afforded them medical proof of their relation, and Dorian had been able to use that to prove he was Ariel’s uncle and petition for adoption. The ink on her adoption papers was barely dried, even as they spoke now. Dorian had no intention of keeping Julian away from Ariel, unless he proved himself truly unworthy of being in her life, but he also had no intention of readily giving her away to a werewolf with a history of viewing family as a flippant construct to be used whenever it pleased him and disregarded when inconvenient.
The waiter wrote their order on a notepad and disappeared toward the kitchen. Almost immediately a serving tray appeared, on it there was sugar, milk, and complimentary biscuits. A few moments later two teacups popped up, followed by a pot to tea. The service was incredibly lively at this little café.

The Gift Jules found himself letting out a genuine laugh at Dorian's attempt at humour. "Well I hope for your sake that she doesn't come into her magic too soon and turn that octopus into a real one," he grinned, watching Ariel bash the toy around, quite delighted with herself. It was almost like watching Tristan at that age, blonde hair, blue eyes, cherubic face. Julian had taken to fatherhood like a duck to water, and his visits to his son when he was only a baby were some of his most teasured memories, just the innocent squeals and giggles and fascination with everything made Julian feel more alive than ever. The world was that bit more magical through the eyes of little ones, and hearing Ariel squealing with happiness at such a simple toy was enchanting. Dorian was only a year older than River, so he had no memories of her at that young age, but he imagined that she wouldn't have looked much different to Ariel. He remembered her as a toddler, around three years old, blonde curls everywhere, full of energy and curiosity. Time would only tell just how like her mother Ariel would be, and Jules planned to stick around to see it with his own eyes. The tea they had ordered arrived on their table almost as soon as the waitress had walked away with their order, and Julian leaned back out of the way, considering Dorian's question as he stared at the two tea cups in front of them. "We had a dog when we were young," he answered, remembering Tess fondly, the little jack russell terrier had been quite the loyal companion to their mother long before Julian and River arrived on the scene. She may have even had the dog when she had given up Dorian, who knew. Jules had adored her, though, even if he had once painted her paws in primary colours and ruined her lovely white fur. "And believe it or not we had a couple of squirrels for a while. Our father was into horticulture, and one day he accidentally killed a squirrel, long story, but he found her babies and brought them home. They were fun pets." They had been fun pets for about a year before they had gotten loose and ruined their mother's work room, shredding all of her materials and creating a horrible mess. She had insisted that Henry find another home for the critters. River had sobbed. She had slept in Jules' bed that night and he'd hugged her while she cried herself to sleep. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Dorian carefully lifted the tea pot and poured a cup for his half brother, then one for himself. He listened to Julian speak of the family dog, though not much was given in the way of details, as Dorian poured milk and sugar into his cup and gave it a gentle stir with his teaspoon. He could see River and Julian as children riding on the back of a large fluffy dog as if it were a horse, but perhaps they didn’t care for the dog as much as they did these squirrels, which received much more attention in Julian’s description than the canine had. “Squirrels?” he said with a bit of shock in his tone. “That is an unusual pet. I wouldn’t fancy having rodents running about the flat.” He gave a small chuckle to be polite as he slipped the teaspoon from his teacup and set it carefully onto the saucer, avoiding making unwanted noise.
Bringing his cup to his mouth, Dorian took a small sip of the tea as he continued to casually evaluate Julian. “You said something about having a place nearby. Are you staying in London or-” The sudden wails of little Ariel stopped Dorian mid-sentence and he looked to her in her buggy for clues as to what was wrong, setting his tea cup down rather hastily. She had her toy on the tray in front of her still, but her face was red and little tears were forming at her eyes. She was probably hungry, this unexpected visit from Uncle Julian had thrown off their regular routine and Ariel was bound to be a chubby little girl with the way she liked to eat. “Come here,” Dorian cooed gently, reassuringly, as he unfastened her from the buggy.

The Gift This little "getting to know you" chat was getting tedious already, and Jules forced himself to continue with it, to be polite, to not just stand up, snatch Ariel, and apparate somewhere they'd never be found. It was very tempting, especially since they seemed to be stuck on the subject of pets. That was a killer, though he liked animals. He didn't want to know what Dorian thought of squirrels, he wanted to know why River had thought him a better carer for her baby. He wanted to know why this Auror hadn't been able to stop his sister and brother in law from being murdered when he'd been right there. He wanted to demand an explanation from this stranger. How could Humbert be sitting there chatting about rodents when he'd let their sister die? It felt like Julian had stepped into an alternate reality where nobody seemed to care about such things. Some sort of pleasant land where you let people be killed and looked after their children once they were six feet under. He wanted to scream at how strange and wrong it all was. Instead, he merely laughed along with Dorian, fixing up his own tea and taking a sip from his cup. "Well that's why you need a cat," he countered, backing up his earlier prediction that the man would end up with one. Dark eyes watched Julian across the table as he sipped his tea, thinking it needed less sugar and more alcohol in it, but it was free so he couldn't complain. At Dorian's question, he decided he might just need to ditch the tea and drink vodka straight from a bottle to cope with the encounter, but he also felt a little thrill of naughtiness at the thought of Dorian finding out where Jules was living. He wouldn't spoil the surprise just yet, though. "In London, yes," he began, pausing to stare at Ariel as she began to wail in her pram. The instinct to reach out and take her, to cuddle her and reassure her was strong. It took everything Julian had in him to not stand and go to the babe, but Dorian was already there, unstrapping her from her pram. "Is she hungry?" Jules inquired, unable to smell anything nasty coming from the tot to indicate she needed a nappy change. He watched for a moment, trying to figure out the best way to ask an awkward question, and then figuring he might as well just go for it. "I can take her while you drink your tea..." he offered, attempting to sound helpful and not at all pushy. "I don't mind." Translation: 'I want to cuddle my niece who I've only just met and if you say no I will hate you forever and plot harder to take her away from you.' _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
There was no sign of injury and no hint of soiled nappy lingering in the air, so he assumed Julian’s guess to be correct. “Yes, I think she may be.” Bouncing the babe in his arms, Dorian turned her buggy gently so that he could more easily pull her diaper bag from the basket underneath her seat. Her bag was stocked with everything they would need for their trip to the tea shop and then some. He pulled a bottle from one of the pockets on the side of the bag and popped the lid off, setting the lid upside down on the table. Dorian knew what was coming and his jaw tensed as the words formed in his half brother’s mouth. Of course Dorian would never desire to keep their niece away from Julian but he simply did not know what to expect from this unstable individual. What if Julian disapparated with Ariel the moment she was no longer in Dorian’s arms? Julian did not have his wand drawn, and as one is required for the vast majority of wizards in order to apparate, that gave Dorian a small bit of assurance in the matter.
Still fussing about with the bottle and the diaper bag, his head down to conceal his worry, Dorian resigned himself to open the door to a bit of uncertainty. As an Auror, Dorian didn't like not having all aspects planned for. He was meticulous in his work for the Ministry and the MLE, and he tried his best to apply those same principles to his niece’s safety. Things rarely went as planned, there was always a wrench in the cogs somewhere but that was all the more reason for contingency plans and thorough forethought. Dorian was granted none of that in this encounter with his long-lost, werewolf, half brother, and with every adjective added to that label there was just that much more to fret about, but Dorian knew it was not right to keep Ariel from her family and nothing good could come of making an enemy of his brother. “I’m sure she will like a bit of time with her Uncle Julian,” he replied to his brother’s offer. Dorian could feel his heart beating wildly in his chest as he looked down at his niece and then carefully handed her over. Jaw clenched and eyes fixed, Dorian watched Ariel for any signs that she was uncomfortable, and Julian for any subtle hints that he was going to confirm all of Dorian’s fears.

The Gift Julian watched his brother carefully as the older man seemed to take a brief moment to consider the proposition as he fussed about inside the large bag of supplies he had brought with him. It really shouldn't have been that big a deal, no more a stress or drama than passing your baby over to your mother or uncle to hold while you nipped to the loo. It was a big deal, though, and both men clearly felt it. It was a huge moment for the newly acquainted brothers, one that would determine the first steps of trust, or some semblance of it, and the first hints of family. Of course Julian was planning in the long run to screw Dorian over where it came to Ariel, but for now, he was happy to plant those false seeds. Besides, this wasn't a game to him. It might have seemed like he was merely being competitive and jealous - which he was - but the thing that drove him the most was love. Love for his niece, and his sister, and that love meant that he would never do anything to harm one hair on Ariel's head. Nor would he ever wish to harm her emotionally or mentally, either, which he knew to be just as important. After what felt like an age of anxious waiting, Dorian passed Ariel over, and the world stood still. Her tiny frame felt like it weighed no more than a feather in Julian's arms as he cradled her tight, hushing and making soothing noises to try and calm her. His cheek pressed against hers as he bobbed her up and down a little, humming an old lullaby he used to sing to Tristan when he was a babe. The feel of the gentle hum against her peachy soft cheek seemed to calm her, and her cries died down, Julian closing his eyes and taking a moment to just enjoy the scent of her, or really, the lack of one at all. It was so lovely he could have stayed like that all night, but he knew her quiet wouldn't last long, and so reluctantly, he moved his hand from her thin blonde curls, where his thumb had been stroking soft circles, and picked up the bottle of milk, placing a kiss on her head before shifting her down to his lap, where she immediately latched on to the bottle, blue eyes lighting up at the sight of it. Julian watched her drink for a minute, before glancing up at Dorian. "Thank you," he said quietly, not wanting to even admit that Dorian had had to give his blessing for the moment to happen, but still wanting to appear grateful to the man. "You seem well adjusted to baby life," he went on. "Do you have any children of your own?"_______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Dorian watched as his own arms moved, taking Ariel further and further away from the safety he provided and instead moved her closer to the unknown. As he carefully passed his niece over to her other uncle, time seemed to slow and as Dorian watched Julian with the babe it seemed the world stopped completely. There was a pressure in his chest, a tightening as adrenaline coursed through his body and his heart pounded anxiously against his chest. His well-trained eyes were fixed on his brother in a seemingly casual observation as opposed to the scrutinizing stare that it was. This small instance required every bit of undercover training Dorian had ever received. He had to stay cool, calm, and collected; take in every available detail, and maintain a casual appearance not to give anything away. The tension inside of him was killing him. The loss of River and Bert was still fresh and heartbreaking, and Dorian could not risk little Ariel ending up as her parents had.
The pressure inside of him began to slowly subside as Julian caringly comforted their niece, rocking her gently and softly humming a lullaby Dorian did not recognize. Ariel seemed to quiet under the circumstances and that equally eased some of Dorian’s concerns and simultaneously raised more questions. Julian seemed well practiced at comforting a crying infant which was surprising as Ariel was the first child in the family, as far as Dorian was aware. Surely River would have mentioned if Julian’s infrequent and sporadic visits were to due to his raising a family of his own. Dorian might have had a better opinion of the man if he had been described as anything other than a delinquent vagabond – even if River hadn’t used those exact words and had a much more loving tone when speaking of her brother.
The conversation returned as Ariel began suckling on her bottle and the topic was something Dorian was quite interested in himself. “No. No children of my own, I’m afraid.” He could not truthfully say that the lack of children in his life was due to never having found the right woman, because he had. Dorian just hadn’t had the opportunity to see through all the foolish and wonderful plans he could have imagined with Paris in his life. Thinking of her had a way of making Dorian pensive, and he needed to keep his head clear at the moment, so all thoughts of Paris were pushed aside as he remained focused on the present situation. “Ariel has been a good teacher of what I need to know, and I have other help as well.” Emily and Andre had thus far been the greatest resource of knowledge and support Dorian could have asked for in this bizarre twist of fate that left him as a surrogate father to a four month old little girl. “You seem rather comfortable with her,” Dorian noted, though really the word that best described the scene he was witnessing was ‘competent’. “Have you much experience with children?”

The Gift He really should have taken more of an interest in hearing about Humbert when River was wanting to talk incessantly about him after she'd met the man for the first time. Julian had visited her only three weeks after she'd found their long lost brother, and she had gone on and on about him, but Jules had been jealous, uninterested, dismissive, and openly so. He clearly remembered sitting across from her on her sofa in her lovely little house that she had proudly purchased with Bert, and telling her that she already had the best brother she could want, and whatever she could tell him about Humbert would never match up to Jules himself. She had laughed at him, taking it in good humour and carrying on anyway, and Jules had excused himself, leaving Bert to listen to her ramblings. He'd picked up a few bits and bobs from his place leaning against the kitchen counter, munching on an apple and telling himself that he wasn't going to be replaced in his sister's life. It had been a strange feeling, and he'd only stayed for three days, leaving a little bit earlier than planned and going off to sulk on his own for a good six weeks before returning to River again. His next visit was the usual week long, and he was glad he had forced himself to get past his jealousy and stay, since that was one of the last times he ever got to spend with her, only making two other short visits before her death. He had certainly made a fuss over his unborn niece more than the news of his new found brother, and he had been rather excited to be an uncle, something River knew well, which was why it stung that bit more that Ariel was now living with Dorian. No children wasn't a surprise, though, Dorian seemed very straight laced, and living in an apartment with his infant niece didn't speak of marriage and babies really, did it? Dorian had spoken as though it was a regret that he hadn't yet had children of his own, but there was making a general inquiry, and then there was being rude and prying too much. He wouldn't ask why children had never come about for his brother. Yet. The sexy little girlfriend that popped in and out of the building regularly didn't seem the mothering type, either. Jules got the impression just from looking at her that she was the type to sleep around, she was naughty. He knew her type well, often sought women like her out for a good time, knowing they'd both forget each other the next morning after one hell of a night. He wondered how easy she would be to seduce, though his thoughts were cut short by Dorian asking about Julian's own experience with children. Jules would not be talking about Tristan today, or any day soon, not with this man who he barely knew. River might have trusted him after such a short time, but Julian wasn't as foolish or gullible as his little sister. "I've always been good with little ones," he said, gazing down at Ariel as she drank, her eyes, once huge, blue, and staring up at him in wonder, now fluttering closed as the milk sucked her into the land of nod. A soft smile graced his lips as he watched her, thoughts of his son at this age flitting through his head. "It turns out they're simple creatures, people make a fuss claiming they're hard work, but they just need food, love and laughter and they're fine." Maybe there was a little bit more to that, he imagined clothes might be classed as a necessity, and possibly a few medicinal things stored away for those dreadful teething months, but aside from that, he didn't view children as hard work at all. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
Dorian envied the mindset that Julian portrayed, stating that babies were simple creatures needing little more than love and food. Ariel was a good baby, fussier than most for a few months but she had recently reached a calm state in her development and she no longer cried so hard and so frequently that she made herself sick. She found happiness in simple things like her stuffed octopus and her own reflection. She was beginning to sleep longer through the night, only waking Dorian once for a bottle and quickly soothing herself to sleep again for a few more hours until Dorian had to get up anyway to get himself readied for work. He found he enjoyed being a father, ‘Daddy Dorian’ as Dorcas liked to refer to him when she was speaking with his infant niece, but it was tiring work. He got up early for his work at the Ministry where he spent most of the day, sending his patronus to check in on Ariel and Emily periodically when he had a moment. When he came home there was very little rest. Dorian wanted to ensure Ariel felt all the love her parents weren’t able to give her themselves, so it was trips to the park or the pet shop to watch the animals, tummy time on the floor with mirrors and rattles and wrinkles in his suit. She made a mess for such a tiny creature and when she had finally laid down for the night, Dorian spent his time tidying up the small flat and reviewing case files until the night finally called him as well. He wondered how much of Julian’s perception of childrearing was influenced on his own lack of a career or stability in his life.
“A mother, too,” Dorian added, finally broaching the subject that had weighed on them like a giant erumpent in the room. This wasn’t the time nor place to get into the gritty details of how River and Bert had lost their lives. They would need to plan for such a meeting, find someplace private to speak while Ariel played happily with Emily or Andre, or hades, even with Dorcas so long as Ariel wasn’t within earshot of what would be discussed. Dorian knew the babe couldn’t understand them yet, but she could sense angry tones. She was an empathetic little girl and the conversation the estranged brothers needed to have was not one to be had in front of a child. “Since you are planning on staying in town for a while, I think it best for us to have a proper discussion of what happened, at a later time. I am sure you have questions and while I do not think I have all of the answers, I have no intention on keeping any information from you.” He would take whatever blame Julian threw at him as well, for Dorian knew there was no way for the man to think anyone was at fault other than Dorian. It was, after all, what Dorian believed to be the truth, as well. “I should be able to find a sitter for our little Ariel tomorrow, if you are available.”

The Gift And a mother. More than anything, a mother. Julian said nothing in response to the man's words, only stared down at the innocent bundle who was now fast asleep in his arms. He set the empty bottle on the table and traced a finger across Ariel's cheek, chubby like her mother's had been as a child. Everything about her screamed River, and it hurt. She deserved to have her mother in her life, she deserved the kind of hugs only River could give her, the kind of laughter that only a mother and daughter could share, the kind of impossible love that only River could ever feel for her. It was painful, how unfair it all was, and as much as it hurt Julian to think about it all, it would hurt Ariel even more when she was old enough to think the same thoughts and realise what she would never have. He wanted to hold her forever and make it all go away, make everything okay, but he couldn't. Nobody could save this sweet little one from the sorrow that was coming for her. But he could certainly hold her hand through it all, and if Dorian had to be holding the other one, then so be it, but by the Gods Jules would be there and no one would stop him. "Yes, well there's a lot to be said," he agreed, reluctant to go along with it but unable to find a reason not to have that talk with Dorian. It wasn't something for Ariel to be around for, it would be a room full of hard sentences and probably a good bit of anger and frustration on Julian's part. He had no idea how Dorian felt about what had happened to his new sister, but it was time to find out. Time to get everything out in the open, all cards on the table - except for the one where Jules planned to try and take custody of Ariel - and figure out what to do about it all. Hell, it could even lead to Dorian admitting that he didn't want to be Ariel's guardian. There was always the possibility that the man was doing it because he felt like he had no choice, and having Jules come into the picture might be a relief for him. That would be just perfect, but he wouldn't be getting his hopes up. Jules nodded his head. "I'm free tomorrow," he confirmed, glad to hear that Dorian was intending to be completely open and honest with him. At least one of them would be. "Give me a time and place and I'll be there." He continued to watch Ariel sleep, knowing he would have to hand her back to Dorian in a minute so that she could sleep comfortably in her pram, though his arms seemed the perfect fit for her. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
He would need to confirm first that someone could watch Ariel, and without a definitive duration at that, but Emily and Andre had yet to let him down when he had needed them. Ariel had a little cot in their home and she had stayed several nights at a time, in the past, when Dorian had been called out of town on work. He was certain that the Meadoweses would be understanding of the situation, it was more whether they had already made plans for themselves, since Dorian rarely gave up time with his niece on the weekends. “Allow me confirm with the sitter,” he said gently, watching as the man held his infant niece and lovingly stroked her cheek as if he hadn’t abandoned her for four full months. “I’ll have a precise time for you by tonight.” Dorian sipped his tea and focused his gaze on the passersby on the street on the opposite side of the window.
There was a moment of silence between the brothers again; Dorian watching Julian from the corner of his eye, and Ariel sleeping in her estranged uncle’s arms. He wouldn’t be estranged for long, Dorian could sense that much. There was an unspoken connection between Julian and Ariel that Dorian couldn’t possibly understand nor replicate. It came with being legitimate family, he assumed, and while they may have shared blood Dorian could never replace the connection to her parents that Julian would offer her. Finishing his tea, Dorian left a bit of muggle money on the table for the waitress which would cover their bill and a nice little tip for the speedy service. Although she was a witch, she was familiar enough with exchanging currency as it wouldn’t look right to be accepting ‘strange’ coins in payment at a mostly muggle shop. She was a nice enough woman, Dorian knew from the few exchanges they had had over the years.
Having packed Ariel’s things back into her nappy bag and reclined her pram so that she could sleep a bit more comfortably on the short walk back home, Dorian waited patiently for his brother to decide that he was done. There was no need to rush him, aside from Ariel’s schedule but that could be flexible for a bit of time with her family.

The Gift Of course Dorian would need to check with whomever he was going to dump Ariel on to see if they were free, you couldn't just throw a baby at a person without warning. He seemed confident that he'd have an answer by tonight, so ditching Ariel with any old babysitter was probably normal practice for him, and it made Julian seethe at the thought of this beautiful little baby being passed from pillar to post, not knowing whether she was coming or going. He'd have said so, too, only he needed to fool this idiot into trusting him. Jules was half wondering if it was worth it. If he might not be better off just waging a full on war against Humbert for custody of their niece. He'd get to say all of the angry things he was thinking, that would be satisfying enough, but then he knew when she was older that Ariel would be told tales of her horrible Uncle Julian coming in and shaking up her world. He would be painted as the bad guy for it, and Merlin only knew how she would react to that. No, he needed to play along. He could air his real views in time, when he would be less likely to be lynched for it. "That's fine," he agreed, blue eyes watching Dorian as he packed away Ariel's things and reclined her pram so she could sleep comfortably in it. Jules wanted to stand up and apparate to the other end of the earth with Ariel, rather than part with her now that he'd made his first connection. It killed him, absolutely killed him to instead rise and press her to his shoulder, his hand cradling the back of her heavy head as it rested there, her button nose gently kissing his cheek. Breathing her in for the moment, he didn't hand her back to Dorian, but laid her down in her pram himself, fixing her head comfortably so her neck wasn't bent awkwardly, smoothing her dress down so there were no uncomfortable lumps for her to lay on, and planting one last kiss on her forehead before straightening up and allowing Dorian to strap her in safely. "I'll see you tomorrow then, brother," he said, reaching for his untouched cup of tea and downing the lukewarm beverage in just a few large gulps. "It was nice to finally meet you." His gaze lingered on Dorian's face, so much like their mother, but he eventually tore himself away, his usually cocky gait carrying him to the door of the cafe and out into the chilly air. He walked slowly, giving Dorian a chance to strap Ariel in to her pram and get her outside. There would only be a short distance between them, not enough for conversation, but enough for Dorian to be fully aware that Jules was walking ahead the entire journey home. Humbert had no idea where Jules had set up home now that he was making a go of a normal life, and him finding out his new brother had moved in down the hall was just going to be one hell of a thrill. Julian would hate to miss out on the moment and have it be discovered some other way. He would be the one to reveal it, and he would be the one to enjoy the look on Humberts face. His steps were purposeful, sensitive ears picking up on the sound of the pram wheels not too far behind him. Julian didn't turn to look at his new family as he walked the same path they had taken to get to the cafe, as he headed right for the apartment building that Humbert resided in, a spring in his step and a smile on his face that Dorian could not yet see. He would have cackled with glee if nobody was around to hear him. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]

I promise to keep you safe always and forever
It had only been four months but in that short period of time Dorian had come to truly love his little niece. He had found it difficult to leave her after his two week sabbatical from work had ended but if he was to be in charge of another human being he would need to have money to feed her and clothe her. Dorian had a good amount of money in a Gringotts vault that he had saved away but he and Ariel couldn’t live on that forever and he certainly wouldn’t want to. His job was hard. It was stressful. On the best of days it was boring and on the worst it was deadly but he loved being an Auror and Dorian knew he wouldn’t be happy giving it all up to be a stay at home uncle to a little girl who would one day want more than what his life savings could afford them. It had been a difficult decision to go back to work but Emily and Andre eased his worries and soothed his overactive mind. They loved Ariel almost as much as Dorian did, and he was certain that if he explained that Ariel’s uncle had finally come around and needed to talk about River and Bert, they would drop just about anything to help them out. That was the sort of people the Meadoweses were.
There was a pang of guilt that struck Dorian as he watched Julian so lovingly and carefully place Ariel in her pram, smelling her hair and kissing her forehead. For a moment, as he watched the man who had been absent for the whole of Ariel’s life up until today, Dorian felt guilty for having thought there could ever be anything malicious or untoward about his half-brother. This was Ariel’s uncle and he so clearly loved her in this short span of time that he had known her. Anyone who could love couldn’t be as bad as Dorian had feared. “You as well,” he replied as his brother made to leave. Dorian’s arm moved forward slightly to shake the man’s hand – an awkward salutation for a family member but perhaps the most fitting considering the circumstances – but Julian simply downed his tea and turned tail towards the door.
Fastening the straps of her pram around the sleeping infant, Dorian looked over the little baby. She was making a sucking motion with her mouth, though there was nothing but her tongue to suck on. It was precious and gut wrenching all at the same time. He brushed her tiny blonde curls away from her eyes and then righted himself. He weaved back through the scattered tables and chairs with her pram, going out the door backwards so he could push it open with his back and pull the buggy along behind him without the door smacking roughly into the frame and waking the sleeping tot.
They were several paces behind Julian when they had finally made it to the pavement. He was headed in the same direction as Dorian and Ariel, and for a while that was normal but as they continued on, Dorian couldn’t help but to stare at his brother, just out of range for a conversation. Dorian’s apartment building was approaching and instead of continuing on, Julian turned and headed toward the door. Perhaps he was trying to be polite after failing to shake Dorian’s hand at the coffee shop and having decided to make amends by holding the door for Dorian and the buggy. Not quite. Julian opened the door and stepped inside, causing Dorian’s brow to furrow. What was this man playing at? If he was wanting to walk Ariel home, why had he not waited a few moments to walk along with them? The situation was perplexing to say the least but as Dorian continued, the questions only increased in frequency. Julian was still ahead of them as Dorian reached his floor and headed down the hallway towards his flat. He stopped in front of his door and stuffed his hand in his pocket for his keys, eyes still locked onto his mischievous brother who was now standing in front of Mrs. Weatherby’s flat. What in Merlin’s good name was he playing at?!

The Gift The man and the pram followed him down the street, and Jules walked comfortably, in no rush to hurry the moment on. When he reached the turn into the apartment, he resisted the urge to glance back, and merely strolled up to the front door, a little slower this time, allowing Dorian to catch up as he pushed the door open. Would his brother think he was being polite? Holding the door open for them? Or being a complete weirdo by going into their building for no apparent reason? Probably the latter, but that was what Julian wanted, and if he could have skipped with glee down the hallway, he would have. His footsteps sounded gently through the building, and he could hear the wheels of the pram not far behind, where his beautiful little niece was sleeping like an angel in her carriage. She would be seeing a lot more of her Uncle Julian, he would make sure of it, but unfortunately for her, he would be bringing his own fun to the game. He paused at the front door to his new home, glancing over his shoulder at Dorian as the man halted before his own door, confusion on his face as he also stole a look at his brother. Hand fishing his shiny new key from his pocket, Julian stuck it in the lock and gave it a slow turn, a large grin spreading across his face as he held Dorian's gaze, stepping inside his apartment and shutting the door slowly, leaving the older man perplexed in the hallway. "Game on," he grinned, dropping his key on the living room table and shrugging his jacket off. He draped it across the back of the couch and crossed to the kitchen, pouring himself a glass of water and flopping down onto the couch with it. Well, that was a success. He had gotten some quality time with Ariel, and she had taken to him quite well for a first meeting, and his brother was stuffy, though he seemed to be taking good enough care of the baby. For now. Julian's gaze drifted around his small apartment. It wouldn't do for long with a little one living there, but he'd fit the necessities in for a while if he needed to. Failing that, he could always move into his parents house. He had inherited it and it was being rented out for the time being, but if he needed it it was his for the taking. That was food for thought. Ariel would love it there. _______________________ tag: Dorian Michael Humbert notes: *all the evil laughter* X'D <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Dancing Script"]
