Order of Phoenix
Percival Dearborn
PERSONALITY Boggart: That the visions he saw while under his curse came true, which where of that he was killing his entire family including his baby sister Lunete. Mirror of Erised: To discover the grave of Merlin- the greatest wizard to ever have lived. It would be the treasure of all treasures for he could discover knowledge none would know like the wand of Merlin’s that is rumored to be buried with him. Patronus: Sphinx – The happiest memory was when his little was sister born, he was happy to have gotten a sister instead of another brother. He became very protective of his sister once she was born and has been since, taking his role as a big brother seriously. Percival is a true Ravenclaw, a scholar born at heart who lives by the motto “curiosity killed the Percival, satisfaction brought him back”. Like most Ravenclaws Percival is intelligent, witty, and cunning. However; he is ambitious as a Slytherin, driven by a sense of discovery no matter what leading him to embrace the thrills of danger. When most people first meet Percival they find him rather rude and arrogant but most after getting to know him see a different person. Beneath his raw exterior, is a chewy center goodness that reveals a more sensitive Percival. Unable to stay still or cooped in a house for long, he is a born adventurer and is always looking for new things to discover and new dangers. He holds a unique interest and love for all things ancient including the dark arts. Given his tendency for danger, Percival possesses the bravery of a Gryffindor instead of a Ravenclaw. Percival is also very loyal to his friends and family, willing to put lay his life down a thousand times over any of them. Like any natural born scholar, his thirst for discovery and knowledge has become his motivation and determination throughout life. He is willing to risk his life several times to discover a lost artifact or hopefully fulfill his longtime goal of discovering Merlin’s grave. While he is usually able to keep his emotions under control Percival does have flaws like anyone else. Percival is known to have a temper like a volcano and while it may not erupt quickly, it’s eruptions are violent and long-lasting. Grudges are a common thing for Percival to hold as he does not forget ever being slighted and uses it in future judgments of people. Given Percival’s intelligence, he does have a very big ego and can come off as arrogant, all-knowing, and condescending. HISTORY Mother: Rosemary "Rosie" Dearborn, muggle, deceased. Father: James "Jim" Dearborn, 60, muggle Siblings: Caradoc Dearborn, 32, muggleborn. Tristan Dearborn, 27, muggleborn. Lionel Dearborn, 21, muggleborn. Lunete Dearborn, 19, muggleborn. Partners: Not Currently Others: An Owl named Talon. Unfortunately Sphinx’s are outlawed of pets. Percival Ren Dearborn was born on July 25th, 1954, into a loving muggle family. He is the third child of Jim and Rosie Dearborn and is the younger brother of Caradoc and Tristan Dearborn. As a baby Percival was an inquisitive one as he crawled and walked everywhere he got the chance to, giving his parents more trouble than his more well-behaved brother Tristan did. As a kid, Percival looked up to his older brothers especially Tristan and would spend most of his time with them, going on adventures by himself in the neighborhood, or just reading a book outside. He has fond memories of looking up at the stars with his older brothers, something that apparently always calmed him down even as a baby when Tristan helped turn on the astrology toy above his crib on one night. When he was three years old his parents brought his younger brother into the picture, Lionel. Now it was time for Percival to join the club of big brothers as his mother would call it. Percival enjoyed helping his mother with Lionel and everything else of being a big brother. Two years later Percival gained another sibling this time a sister, the baby of the family Lunete. After Lunetes birth Percival took his role of being a big brother ever more seriously, with his mom telling him “big brothers always protect their little sisters”. Percival would speak up among his brothers and advocated for Lunete to be included in games when she was older, and always kept looking out for her more than anyone one could argue. In 1965 Percival received his letter from Hogwarts and joined his brother Tristan who was a third year Ravenclaw then. When it came to the sorting ceremony, the sorting hat was ready to go with Ravenclaw but stalled wondering if Gryffindor might be a better choice. The words of the Sorting Hat “you long for the danger, to cheat death, to defy the ancients. Brave as a warrior, intelligent as a scholar but which one” still play in Percival’s head today. Eventually, he was sorted in Ravenclaw with the Sorting Hat finally saying to him “I expect great discoveries from you…ones that would impress Glenda herself”. Percival was overjoyed to join Ravenclaw due to the cunning nature of its students plus, Tristan was in the same house. He quickly became interested in History of Magic early on and stood out for his unique interest in it among all other students. He also enjoyed DADA, especially when it came to curses and counter-curses. Percival became competitive with Tristan for good grades despite their differences in years and received plenty of good marks in his classes. While his brother Tristan was more of a lady’s man, Percival dated few girls in his time at school, focusing more on his studies. Most of his time at Hogwarts he enjoyed exploring, breaking rules by sneaking into forbidden and restricted areas of the castle and studying. In his fifth year his baby sister joined Hogwarts becoming a Gryffindor, the house he was almost in. This was the only time he regretted not pushing the Sorting Hat to put him in Gryffindor because he felt he would have a better chance of protecting her if they had been in the same house. In his fifth year he also eventually joined the Quidditch team playing as a Seeker for his next three years. During his last year of Hogwarts, Percival became extremely interested in the wizard named Merlin. At this time Percival had an English Oak wand which is rumored to be what Merlin's wand was made from, making Percival feel he had some sort of connection to Merlin. In studying history books about Merlin, he discovered the location of Merlin's grave was unknown and most historians said it was lost to time. Over his last few months at Hogwarts he became obsessed with the location Merlin’s grave and wanting to be the one to discover it, believing the grave would hold more than just a body and wand an of a great wizard but maybe his treasures as well. Eventually, after graduating in 1971, with such high marks in most of his classes, Percival applied at Gringotts to become a Curse-Breaker. For the next two years, he traveled the world with a team of Curse-Breakers learning to be one of them, as they went from Egypt, Rome, Greece, and even to the Americas. At the age of twenty, he officially became a Curse-Breaker specializing in Egyptian curses. As a curse-breaker, he spent most of his time breaking curses on tombs of ancient Egyptian rulers to obtain treasures and other relics. Since graduating and becoming a curse-breaker Percival has also tried to fulfill his goal of discovering the grave of Merlin but however, he came up empty-handed despite many rumors and leads. He now believes that Merlin was never buried in England or if he was, that it is kept someplace well secret and undisturbed by man. Despite not discovering Merlin’s grave, Percival has, however; discovered valuable and priceless artifacts, scrolls, and other magical items. In 1977 he was called off a job in Ireland and informed of the news that his mother had died in an accident. Like the rest of his family, her death hurt Percival a lot. He was also hurt and annoyed at Tristan for informing Lunete about their mother’s death instead of letting Percival do it. The death of his mother caused his little sister to abruptly change careers, and while he is proud of her he remains afraid for her given all the chaos in the world. Knowing his protests won’t change her mind he has just tried to be supportive of her and just looks out for her as he always has. The death of his mother and the action of Lunete joining the Aurors made Percival think of his life, the chaos in the world, and what he had if any truly done to help fight the evils emerging. With the threat of the Dark Lord becoming clearer every year that passed, Percival finally decided to join the Order of the Phoenix, like his two older brothers. He felt that it was time for him to end his neutrality in a war he longed to avoid, and finally, make stand like his young sister and older brothers had. Percival used his job to keep an ear to the ground in case the Dark Lord or his followers start looking for any powerful magical artifacts. After staying at home with his dad and family for a few months, he left in January 1978 to start working again for Gringotts and search for Merlin’s grave. In August 1978 while in Egypt attempting to break into a tomb of a rumored dark wizard, to recover a priceless and powerful artifact, a terrible accident happened. An extremely powerful and ancient curse that Percival was trying to break backfired, attacking Percival and the group of curse-breakers working with him. Known for his protectiveness, Percival attempted to counter the curse on his own, however; the curse was too powerful for Percival to counter it and he himself was inflicted with the curse causing tremendous pain, confusion, illusions, and a desire to kill his loved ones. Percival spent months in agony and pain seeing the illusions of him killing his family even his little sister. When his family would visit him, he would attempt to attack them and would verbally beret them the entire visit vowing to kill them and proclaiming his hatred of them. His memories became inaccessible to him, and all he felt was the pain, isolation, and desire to kill. Gringotts directed its curse-breakers to break into the vault with the curse in question, hoping some sort of clue for a remedy would be inside. Eventually, in early December of 1978, they were able to open and secure the vault. With luck, healers and several Egyptian curse experts working together, were able to discover texts about the curse and how to break it. By Christmas Eve, the curse over Percival was broken by forms of several potions, spells, and a cleansing ritual from Egyptian times. His physical, emotional, and mental pain was lifted, his memories were accessible again, and the desire to kill his loved ones gone. However; Percival suffers from nightmares of the illusions that the curse put in his head. He also has several permanent scars from the curse on his arms, face, and body. His first wand, his prized English Oak wand that he felt was a connection to Merlin, was destroyed in the backfiring of the curse as well. When returning to Ollivander for a new wand he was surprised that he was chosen at once by a 12 Inch Flexible Maple Wand with a Phoenix Tail Feather. While he misses his old wand and the so-called connection he felt it had with Merlin, he has grown into his wand, with him and the wand becoming an inseparable pair. For weeks Percival was forced to take time off to work and recover, going stir crazy in his house. Currently, he is back to work and is traveling back and forth from England to Egypt and other locations his job takes him. He continues his lifelong goal of finding Merlin’s grave and assisting the Order in any way he can during his times abroad. Recently he has begun searching for a way to end the disturbing nightmares he constantly battles with from being affected by such a powerful dark curse.
