remus john lupin
PERSONALITY Boggart: Full Moon (it may have been clowns when he was three) Mirror of Erised: Selfishly, he would see himself as a normal teenager, no scars from past transformations, no secrets to keep except that map the four of them lost to Filch. Interestingly, however, not much of his life would be very different, especially not during his Hogwarts years. Patronus: A wolf, of course- strangely enough, the memory he thinks of to conjure his patronus is the same memory Sirius Black uses. One night, after a particularly rough full moon, the four boys huddled together on James' bed, and they ate junk food and told dumb stories. It was the first time Remus really felt safe, melted chocolate frog on the edge of his lips and quiet laughter surrounding him. Safe and welcomed and truly at ease. It came as something of a surprise to Remus that his personality most closely resembled Peter's, and not Sirius' or even James'. He would have though the common canine denominator would have dictated more traits, but to the casual observer, Remus couldn't be more different. He's very quiet, well known for being a keen observer. He was made a Prefect in school, though Remus secretly thinks this was only because Dumbledore had a naïve hope that Remus could keep James and Sirius in line, but his teachers also praised him and he was usually top of the class. Even more impressive when some of his handicaps are considered, his lycanthropy and friendship with the Marauders not the least of which. Remus hears everything, and he's incredibly intuitive. He's also gentle and calm, generally difficult to get a rise out of him. He's unassuming and could pretty easily blend into a crowd, which has come in useful on several occasions. Those close to Remus know better. It's not that Remus isn't any of these things, but there is more below the surface. A certain wild streak is required to run with James and Sirius, and Remus is not lacking. His intelligence comes with a wicked, quick sense of humor that often tumbles out of his mouth before he can stop himself. The witticisms are usually quiet, and often unnoticed, but almost always spoken. He's also particularly adept at creative problem solving, finding ways out of the trouble the group usually gets itself into. Remus also has an air of arrogance because he knows he's smart and he's proud of it. He would never, ever say it out loud, but he definitely thinks he's smarter than most. He does have some dog-like qualities, too. He has a deep sense of 'pack,' respecting the hierarchy of the groups he runs in and his roles within them. He is fiercely loyal and not afraid to show his teeth when someone he cares about is threatened. He would do anything to protect his family and his friends. Finally, he is deeply, almost painfully compassionate. When someone suffers, he tends feels their anxiety and their sorrow as though it were his own, and he seems to have a sixth sense for other's changes in mood. Like a pup is likely to lick its owner's face when they are sad, Remus has a knack for showing up with chocolate. He loves without reservation, leaving himself open for heartbreak in the process. HISTORY Mother: Hope Lupin nee Howell, 37, muggle Father: Lyall Lupin, 41, Gryffindor, pureblood, Ministry employee. Siblings: N/A Partners: In crime: James Potter and Sirius Black, 19, Gryffindor, purebloods and blood traitors, Peter Pettigrew, 19, Gryffindor, half blood Others: N/A There may not have been another couple so excited to welcome their baby into their home as Hope and Lyall Lupin. They were relatively young when Hope got pregnant at 17, and Lyall was 21, but they wanted nothing more in the world. Remus John Lupin was born on a rainy, grey March day, but it may as well have been the middle of summer with the bright smiles on his parents' faces. As a baby and a toddler, Remus was bubbly and generally happy. It seemed clear that he was going to be a charismatic and engaging boy, possibly a class clown. He made his opinions known and he was very social, and he was somehow always able to make Hope laugh and smile with his antics. Revenge set his short life on a different path when he was just four and a half years old. Lyall worked in the Ministry of Magic and was an honorable, dedicated man. It was no one's fault that he was present for Fenrir Greyback's trial for the murder of two people, and he might have gotten away with it had Lyall not realized, with a sharp mind that he bestowed upon his son, that Greyback was a werewolf. He loudly advocated for the werewolf to be put down, even after Greyback's release, not realizing that his fight would come back on his family in ways that he could never imagine. While he fought for justice, the slighted wereworlf was planning terrible injustice. One night while the Lupin's lay sleeping, Greyback broke into their home with the intent to kill their only child. The chill of the night air from the open window woke Remus before anything else, and as his eyes set on the werewolf, he giggled "Puppy!" Hope and Lyall didn't hear the giggle. Their room was several feet down the hallway, and besides, Remus had always come to them if anything was wrong, even in the middle of the night. They supposed they were lucky that he seemed to rarely have bad dreams and even when he was ill, he was in good spirits. So when their almost five year old screamed, they both woke instantly. Lyall told his wife to stay put, not knowing what to expected, and bolted to his son's room. While Remus swears he doesn't remember that night (it's never been quite clear if he really forgot about it or just doesn't want to talk about it), the memory of what he ran to was burned into Lyall's mind. There was blood everywhere- his son's. He managed to fight Greyback off with several strong spells, ultimately saving his son's life. Greyback retreated, disappearing into the night and evading Lyall Lupin. The young parents took Remus to St. Mungo's, where he stayed for several harrowing days. For a while, it wasn't clear if he was going to make it through or not. Finally, Remus was released and sent home. Resuming a normal life, however, was not in the stars for the Lupin family. His first night home, Remus woke in the middle of the night screaming from some terrible nightmare. And then it happened again for several more nights after that. It must have been heartbreaking to watch him go through that, but it was nothing compared to his first full moon, or any of the ones after that. His fifth birthday passed without a party and a quiet celebration because the full moon was just a week after, and he wasn't feeling up to it. Hope and Lyall watched as their bright, energetic, sociable son became withdrawn and downright depressed. He opted not to play with friends and started to turn to books as soon as he could read one through on his own. In a circular room, he could find a corner to curl into and read. For the next few years, he was taken to every doctor they could find- muggle (with some lies about his condition), magical, shaman, "new age" healers. If there was even a rumor of a treatment, it was pursued. Remus was homeschooled so the focus could be on his health and his condition. To complicate matters, he started showing magical abilities around age 7. Remus believed it was due to the lycanthropy, but that, too, changed when he turned eleven. At dinner one night, an owl found its way through the chimney of their small, charming little home, and headed straight for Remus, who was pushing his potatoes around his plate. It dropped a thick letter on his dinner plate, leaving grease marks in the parchment, and then attacked the dinner that Remus wasn't eating. It took a long time to decide to let Remus attend Hogwarts, as well as several visits with Dumbledore to ensure that not only Remus would be safe and protected, but so would the other students. For his part, Remus didn't give much of an opinion on whether or not he wanted to attend the school, but ultimately, it was decided it would be good for him. It's important to note that when the sorting hat was placed on his head, it deliberated for a minute, telling Remus that he showed strong Ravenclaw tendencies. Remus, desperate for any reason to make his parents look at him like he was a normal kid, begged for Gryffindor, and that hat obliged. Somehow, despite his best efforts to keep his nose hidden in a book, he became quick friends with James, Sirius, and Peter, which made him even more careful to hide his secret from them. He lied about his disappearances every month- his mother was sick and he needed to take care of her, various extended family members died, his mother was sick again, his father wanted to take a last minute trip. As careful and as detailed as he was, it took his dorm mates no more than a year and a half to figure it out, and when confronted, Remus had been terrified. He'd been sure they would desert him once they knew, but the exact opposite happened. They banded together- they formed a pack, really, and by their fifth year, they were illegal animagi keeping him company on full moons. When they were all human again, they made sure to nurse him back to health, too, and Remus felt safe for the first time he could remember in a long time. Even more importantly to a fifteen year old, he felt like he belonged. Remus flourished. If it was possible, his grades got even better, but he also found himself in more detentions alongside his friends. He was made Prefect, though was upset that he didn't make Head Boy (not that he said as much to James, of course). While still quiet and always carrying a book, his parents finally saw glimpses of the toddler before the attack. Now that they're graduated, Remus is looking for work, but hitting roadblock after roadblock due to his affliction. He was just fired from an assistant's position for missing too many work days, but is at least spending his time with The Order. James has been helping him make ends meet, but he hates needing it and is determined to find a job he can keep. He might be slipping back into a kind of depression because of it.
