Artemis Kai Scamander
PERSONALITY Boggart: If confronted by a boggart she would see her brother Jasper dying from wounds that she should have or could have healed. Her second greatest fear is a giant wolf with it's teeth bared, snarling at her. Mirror of Erised: Her brothers and sisters happy and settled down. Patronus: Black Swan - Artemis graduated healer training in America far away from her family. When her name was called to receive her official credentials at the ceremony, she heard loud clapping from the corner of the hall. Her entire family had traveled to see her graduate, even though many of them had their own lives and were busy. She had no idea they would be there. She was so happy to see everyone, she ran to them, rather than the Healer Trainer to receive her credentials. Artemis was named after her father, and also, the Greek goddess of the hunt. As close knit as the Scamander family is, Artemis was always independent, preferring to figure things out for herself, and make her mind up about people and politics independently from her family. While she is fairly easygoing and laid back, there is a steel core of determination inside her. Ninety percent of the time she's as docile as a doe, that isn't to say that she doesn't have her own opinions or beliefs, but rather she respects others too much to quibble over differences in opinion. She also has a wisdom beyond her years and understands that people are a product of their upbringing. Yes, there are evil people in this world, but far more often evil is taught, it's not something people are born with. She pities angry people narrow-minded people: they have to live with their anger and frustration, while she is free to put ignorant people behind her and move forward with her life. Then there's the other 10 percent. She chooses her battles wisely, but when a battle is to be fought, she holds nothing back. Most would think her a pushover, but her family and close loved ones know, that is not the case. Artemis will fight fiercely for what she believes in, for the people she believes in, and when her loved ones are attacked, there is almost a concentrated ruthlessness to her defense. This earned her the title of "the baby" for the first few years of her life. No matter, she easily twisted her father and older brothers around her finger to join them on whatever adventure they might have thought to protect her from. Her mother and older sister saw through the angelic smile and big blue eyes, but she still got away with plenty. When she was seven, it was her turn to be the big sister as they welcomed Leif into the world. Artemis' attachment to Leif was as strong as his to her. They were both "the babies", and shared a connection similar to Flora and Jasper. She loves her siblings equally of course, but she's most protective of Leif. Like the rest of the Scamander children, she grew up with a deep affection for all kinds of living creatures and had the gentlest hand in caring for them. While Jasper was a master at taming wild creatures and few can communicate with animals as well as Leif, Artemis' specialty is in caretaking. Creatures big and small flourished under her careful handling and seeing that she had a talent for healing, her father encouraged the passion by teaching her all he knew in the care of magical creatures. He wisely kept his daughter from the more dangerous species unless he himself had tamed them. Unfortunately this led Artemis to believe that all creatures were safe and all wounded animals would welcome her care. She learned otherwise when she was nine. After waking in the middle of the night to get a glass of water, she heard a loud howl outside. Some protective instinct drew Artemis into the crisp cool outdoors to find the source of the pained cry. It wasn't long before she had discovered a wolf that had found its way on their property. Despite being familiar with many magical creatures, Artemis had never seen a wolf before and was instantly fascinated with the majestic beast. She approached cautiously and reached her hand for the wild animal, but unlike the other creatures she had seen to with her father, the wild wolf was untamed and in deep pain by the wounds shown on his coat. He must have fought with another creature on their property. The wolf bared his teeth and growled low in his throat. Artemis was nervous, but firm, as a firm hand was meant to show confidence. She was not confident enough. Fear flashed in her eyes just before the wolf attacked and Artemis screamed. She woke up the next morning in her parent's bed with a real healer at her side. The night previous, Newt had also heard the wolf's cry, but didn't fully wake until he heard the back door open and close. After a brief scan of the house he deduced that there was no one breaking in, but that meant someone was breaking out. Then he saw her through the window, a small white angel in the moonlight approaching a deadly black beast. Newt raced with his wand in hand to reach his child, but was just a tad too slow in stunning the wild animal. Artemis would now carry a scar on her shoulder from the attack for the rest of her life. While it was a fairly traumatic event for the young girl, who had never known animals to be anything but appreciative (maybe at times stubborn), she was soon distracted by the healer who was tending to her injury, asking questions about potions, healing spells, St. Mungos and more. When she was feeling better, she received a fierce tongue lashing from her mother. Newt had also received a severe lecture from his wife. It was the only time Artemis had ever seen her parents fight. Later, it was only Artemis' determination to continue healing that Porpentina eventually caved, but from that time on, the rules regarding the various creatures on the farm changed. Over the years Newt would show Artemis not only how to care for animals, but how to protect herself from wild beasts and where their weaknesses were. She received her Hogwarts letter when she was 11 and was only too thrilled to continue with her studies. Her compassion and inner strength caused the sorting hat to yell out, "HUFFLEPUFF" before even touching her head, though there was a family joke that she might be sorted into Slytherin and then their family would have a complete set. She took their teasing in stride. Artemis could be found in three different areas of Hogwarts at any given time when she wasn't busy with her studies or lessons - the hospital wing (volunteering), the Herbology greenhouses behind the castle, or the potions room (studying/experimenting). Other than that, she mostly stuck to her lessons and visiting her older siblings. In her second year, while sitting with her sister Flora, she met Dorian Humbert. Well she didn't exactly meet him, but she saw him, and like a proper pre-teen fell madly in love with him. He was a seventh year, and he was perfect. Artemis would write his name in a journal over and over again, and may have cast an adolescent love potion his way that clearly did not work. Unfortunately, her older brother Jasper found her notebooks and assumed it was Flora who had fallen for the Ravenclaw. During a brief confrontation involving the handsome Humbert, it was revealed to be Artemis with the crush. Embarrassed, she ran off crying, but not before kicking her elder brother in the shin and yelling at him, much to Jasper's horror. Of course she forgave her brother in the end, and by the time she graduated Hogwarts she had all but forgotten the handsome young wizard. Studying for her NEWTS had much to do with her forgotten crush. While incredibly intelligent, it was nothing short of hard work and hours of studying, that got Artemis straight Os on her NEWTs allowing her to pick where and what she would study. It was naturally assumed that she would study at St. Mungos to become a Healer, but due to her excellence in school and the extracurricular work she had accomplished, she was hand selected by Hogwarts Alumni, Damocles Belby, to work as his assistant and intern. He was working on a fascinating project in the American city of New Orleans, studying the fabled rougarou. Her family was stunned when she packed her bags and moved half way around the world without a moment's hesitation. Well, perhaps there was one moment of hesitation in leaving Leif, but she promised to write often and come home whenever she got a spare moment. Between healer training and working with Damocles, she didn't have many spare moments, and while she would never forget about her family, the vibrant life of the Crescent city became home to her. That's where Artemis really came into her own. Then suddenly with no rhyme or reason she left the Big Easy and arrived back at the farm. She was quieter than before, a little more subdued, but never directly indicated anything was wrong. After a few months at the farm caring for creatures once more, she received an offer from St. Mungos. Due to her high marks in healer training, the excellent references she had at the hospital she had worked in in America, and her contribution to Damocles work - which she was far too humble to take any credit for - she was offered a full time position. Primarily a Hit Wizard Healer, she also pulls shifts in Creature-Induced injuries based upon her extensive knowledge of magical creatures.
