Gianna Regina Galbreath was born on July 18, 1958, the second and last child of William and Maria Galbreth, both of Edinburgh, Scotland. The younger sister to Jameson Galbreth, Gianna had an excellent relationship with her brother for the vast majority of her childhood; the two were nearly inseparable from the time she was able to walk and talk. While not an extremely wealthy family--Maria Galbreth is a Healer at St. Mungo's while her husband works at the Ministry as an Unspeakable, the Galbreths can be described as upper middle class, and as such were able to give their children a very comfortable, loving childhood.

Gianna's relationship with Jameson changed when he first started at Hogwarts. With her brother no longer around to be with her all day, she became moodier and a much more disagreeable child, the exact opposite of the laughing, smiling young girl she had been. Not one to throw outward temper tantrums, Gianna mostly acted out in a passive-aggressive way, a characteristic that has stayed with her even now. During Jameson's first break from school, she was thrilled to have her big brother back at first, but that quickly changed when she realized that he wasn't the same person he'd been before he'd left; now he had other friends and other interests, and he appeared to have very little time for his little sister.

Two years later, Gianna herself started at Hogwarts, and her relationship with Jameson soured even more. Sorted into Slytherin, she quickly realized that Jameson--now a teenager and a 3rd-year Gryffindor--wanted nothing to do with her at that point. Gianna, not completely naive, noted for herself that the two Houses seemed to be engaged in some sort of rivalry, and that Jameson was doing all he could to keep up Gryffindor's apparent disdain for Slytherin, even at the expense of familial relationships. Heartbroken, Gianna nevertheless knew that in order to keep herself under control, she would have to turn to her own Housemates for some semblance of comfort in the face of her brother's rejection. It didn't take long before she made friends of her own, though these friends were some of the most unusual she'd ever met. Topics such as "dark arts" and "followers" were frequently brought up in discussions, and while Gianna didn't know what to make of these at first, she soon found herself curious enough to learn more; however, it wouldn't be until several years later that these topics would truly make sense.

In her fifth year, Gianna began dating a fellow Slytherin named Toby Keifer, one of the students who was known as a "follower". It was Toby with whom she shared her first kiss, a moment which, to her chagrin, was seen by Jameson and his group of friends. From that point on, Gianna was never able to see her brother without being subjected to a constant barrage of teasing, not all of it in good fun. Gradually, the love she once held for him turned first into a deep dislike, then into outright hate. During school holidays, she refused to go back to her parents' house in order to avoid Jameson, preferring instead to go to the house of her best friend, Jeanette Winchester, whose parents never minded the company.

Seventh year found Gianna preparing to graduate from Hogwarts. Added to the stress of having to take her N.E.W.T.s, she was also in the middle of a nasty breakup with Toby. Having learned from her estrangement from Jameson (who had graduated two years earlier and was now living in Glasgow with his wife and new baby daughter), Gianna, who had become quite clever with insults (and rather skilled with hexes and jinxes), soon made her ex-boyfriend's life quite miserable. On graduation day, it was widely noted that Toby was not there at the ceremony. Gianna soon learned that he had chosen to receive his diploma quietly the day before so as not to have to deal with her.

Once out of Hogwarts, Gianna quickly found a job at Flourish and Blotts, then found a nice flat in London. Life started to fall into place for her, and she was quite content with the way things were going...until the day she first read about the Muggle murders in the Daily Prophet. The words "dark mark," "followers," "dark magic," and a new phrase, one she'd never heard before then, "Death Eaters," leaped out at her from the paragraphs. Asking around both at her job and during her leisure time at the Three Broomsticks, she soon learned who the Death Eaters were, who Lord Voldemort was, and what was going on as far as the dead Muggles were concerned. Then she learned, by way of her father's owl post, that Jameson, now part of the Magical Law Enforcement, was involved in trying to solve these cases. Gianna's decision as to which side to support was made right then. If Jameson was helping to enforce the law, then she would make his life extraordinarily difficult by assisting those who were breaking it. Thus she became a Death Eater supporter.
