 But I'm busy mending broken pieces of the life I had before Ric and Elle were having a little chat between them, and though Elle didn't look happy at all, Tess let them talk. She busied herself wiping down the bar with her already soaked cloth, not caring that she was spreading wine everywhere. She was too lost in her own thoughts. Like how she was going to get the baby upstairs without having to admit to Ric that she was Tessa's. And how was she going to explain to Elle why she was almost flirting with her ex. Ric was saying something to her, but she was barely listening. Tess let out a short forced laugh, chucking the cloth on the shelf behind her and wringing her hands. Azrielle couldn't believe that Alaric had the gall to be here, nor could she believe that Tessa was just wiping down the bar as though nothing was going on. The thought that Tessa had her take Hannah for the day so she could spend time with Alaric certainly crossed Elle's mind, but she pushed it aside quickly, hoping to Merlin that that wasn't the case. "I'm fairly certain this pub could do without your patronage." and it could, in fact it had done for quite some time, and Elle refused to see her sister fall down the same dark hole she had before, especially with Hannah around.

Azzy gave him some sass and Alaric smiled. He had been expecting it from the moment her eyes hardened upon recognizing him. None of Tessa’s family fancied having anything to do with him, but he wasn’t here for her family. “Lucky for me, then, that it’s not your pub to kick me out of.” He gave a charming smile but his eyes narrowed at he stared at her while taking a long sip of his beer. “Ahhh,” he finished, eyes still locked with Azrielle’s as he set the bottle back on the bar and made absolutely no movement to signal he was ready to leave.

Elle and Rufus had not been Ric's biggest fan when he and Tess were dating. If you could call it dating. It was somehow less formal yet way more intense. They were something undefinable, something beyond normal relationships. And they were something she had escaped for the sake of her daughter. Tessa pressed her lips together. "Can you two not, please?" she said, frowning. "Not in front of the baby." Hannah was stirring in her pram. Morgana had trotted over and was snuffling Hannah's blonde curls lovingly, tail wagging in greeting. Tess hadn't felt this kind of anxiety ever in her life. Not even when she'd been party to burning a house down. This was next level panic. Elle's blood was beginning to boil but she didn't want to cause a scene. She had to get back to the castle and she couldn't stick around to watch Tessa destroy her life again, but by Merlin, if Hannah got caught up in it at all, Elle wouldn't hesitate in taking her away from her mother until she sorted her life out again. Elle didn't think that it would come to that, but it was always somewhere in the back of her mind, not specifically this, but more along the lines of 'what if ...', Tess did have a history of going off the rails and while Elle had come back into her life again, Rufus was another matter. "I have to be going anyway." She snapped at Tessa. Elle bent down to a groggily waking Hannah, "Aunty Elle loves you darling," Elle kissed the top of Hannah's head and turned around, leaving Tessa to deal with whatever mess she had going on. A waking toddler, an excited dog and a twat ex-boyfriend was not a mess Elle needed to be getting into, so she left, walking away and avoiding the urge to flip the bird at Alaric.

The words echoed in Ric’s head like a gong in an empty room. Auntie Elle. ‘Auntie’. A relation, not just some friend’s kid. And Azzy was leaving the child with Tessa. He had brought the beer up to his lips but Azrielle's parting words had halted him. He stared at Tessa for what seemed like ages before setting his beer back on the bar and leaning forward. “You got something to tell me, Sugar?” Had Tessa gone and got herself a nice little family in his absence? Perhaps the pub really had calmed her down and turned her into a good little wife and mother; not at all what Alaric had been expecting.

But I'm busy mending broken pieces of the life I had before Elle had had enough. She kissed Hannah goodbye and walked out of the pub without another word to Tessa. Urgh. That was going to be a tense conversation whenever they got around to having it. Tessa ran her hands through her hair and blew out a breath before remembering that Ric was still sitting there staring at her. No, he was staring at Hannah. Shit. The look he gave Tess was intense as he questioned her about the baby, and Tessa felt her anxiety spike. She turned her back and went to Hannah, scooping her up out of the pram, her favourite stuffed monkey tumbling to the floor in Tessa's haste. She turned to Ric, Hannah in her arms. Hannah, with the same blonde hair as the man on the other side of the bar. With the same dimples as him when she laughed. Tessa shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "I'm sorry. I can't do this." She choked the words out and turned, rushing for the stairs with Hannah, leaving the pram behind. Alaric sipped his beer as he waited for an explanation that never came. Tessa got dewy eyed and ran off, leaving Ric dumbstruck at what the hell had just happened. She was nearly out the door by the time he managed “was it something I said?” and then he looked around the room as if for confirmation that he had in fact been an arsehole. All he got in the way of an answer was Tessa’s dog coming up and snatching up the kid’s toy and trotting off after the pair, leaving Alaric to sit alone with a half empty beer and no bloody clue what he had just been part of.
