She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Her hands shook as she poured the green mixture from her shaker into the chilled cocktail glass. It had never been this bad before, but she had never gone this long without a fix. Perfectly shaped brows furrowed with concentration; she had already messed up this drink once, the floor was sticky with the appletini that had inadvertently been knocked off the counter. She couldn’t afford to anger this patron by making her wait for yet a third drink to be mixed. There had been a number of complaints about her work as of late. Fin went easier on her than the other bartenders but he was still running a business. There was a difference between being the boss’ favorite and taking advantage of her bestie.
Dora blamed her frazzled state on Pansy. She was always in need of something; needing to be changed or to be fed or played with. She was the neediest creature on the planet and though she would never admit it, Dora had taken to purposefully ignoring the baby’s cries by placing a sound-barrier spell on the child’s room for short periods of time. Usually for short periods of time. There had been a handful of times in recent months when the exhausted mum had forgotten about her daughter entirely, absorbed in a bottle of vodka or some illicit elixir for several hours before wandering past Pansy’s nursery on her way to or from the toilet, her bedroom, the attic, wherever and realizing Pansy had been screaming bloody murder inside her silenced room. Those were the evenings she cancelled her plans and promised her darling daughter she would never leave her alone again but sure enough evening turned to night, night turned to early morning, and the hunger cries, soiled nappies, and general fussiness would be too much for Dora to bear. But then she met Hunter.
“About bloody time!” The mousey haired witch gave Dora an exasperated look as a green cocktail was shakily set in front of her. “Sorry,” Dora said half-heartedly. This witch could get stuffed if she wanted to act like a twat but Dora didn’t want to cause any troubles for Fin, so she kept her mouth shut. Ringing her hands in attempt at controlling the shaking, Dora turned and nearly stepped away before she remembered she hadn’t charge the witch for her drink yet. “Bollocks. That’s two galleons,” she said, turning back to the appletini witch who had already stepped away from the bar. “Bollocks!” She couldn’t focus. She just needed to make it to the end of her shift, only a few more hours, then she could go find her new friend and relieve the pain that had been building up in her muscles. Chewing on her lip harder than she intended, Dora looked around to take the order of the next patron.

Jovi flipped her hair over he shoulder as a guy made his way up to her. Usually she would have entertained the idea of him flirting with her a little, getting him to buy her a drink, but things with Fin had been steadily progressing. They'd been together for over ten months and while that wouldn't have usually been a reason to turn away a free drink, she was in her boyfriends club, a boyfriend who she actually liked for once. There were plenty of boyfriends before Fin, none of which she'd ever actually cheated on, or at least not what she'd considered cheating, but Fin was a whole other lake of mermaids, he wasn't just well off, he was actually able to hold a conversation. Perhaps that was why she hadn't grown board of him yet and actually couldn't see herself getting tired of him at all.
For five minutes she'd been in the club with some of her friends from her days at Hogwarts. They liked to stay caught up with one another because honestly, connections paid off. Ella was working for her father's law firm and Jovi wanted to stay in good with her. She was a kind girl, too kind for Jovi's liking really, but she was well connected, something Jovi would happily take advantage of someday. Dawn already had her tongue down a stranger's throat, she'd spotted him in the line outside and even though the women didn't have to queue, Dawn had stopped for a moment to flirt shamelessly and then arrange to meet the guy inside. Constance was the third friend Jovi had convinced to come out. She was clearly not impressed with being there but once she had a few drinks in her she'd be dancing on the bar. She always loosened up after a few shots. "I'll get us some drinks," She said, looking over to Dawn, thinking she could probably do without alcohol. Her inhibitions did not need lowering beneath what they already were, but what was the point of a girls night out if you didn't all have some drinks?
Jovi made her way to the bar, so familiar with the layout of the club that she knew it better than the back of her own wand. She saw Dora fumbling with a drink and then spilling it all over the floor. Jovi grimaced a little. Had it been anyone else she would have called them an incompetent cow, thrown the nearest drink over them, and left in a huff, spending the whole night complaining about the moron witch that couldn’t properly prepare a drink. However Jovi did know this witch. Dora was probably sleep deprived. A yappy dog and a screaming baby was more than Dora could handle, anyone could see that. Jovi was getting her a nanny for her birthday. How much was a house elf? Sure Fin wouldn’t take to kindly to the suggestion of a house elf at Dora’s home, but he didn’t live there and he didn’t have to put up with a constant screaming baby.
Jovi made her way over to Dora's end of the bar where the witch that had been waiting for her drink had taken the new one and walked off without paying. Jovi's mouth dropped open as she stepped to the bar. waving her hands to clear people out of her way, "What a fucking bitch!" She said loudly, bringing her hands down heavily on the bar, making sure that everyone around her could hear her opinion of the woman that had taken her drink and run. "You need a break and a drink," She told Dora. "I'm sure your boss would understand if you took a quick five," Jovi turned and looked to the tall, bloody ugly guy she'd pushed her way in next to, "Don't you agree, handsome?" She tilted her head quizzically, running her hand up his bicep that wasn't all that impressive. He looked unsure but nodded "Yeah, sure." he said, sounding a little timid, "Then it's settled." Jovi said, turning back to Dora with a sweet smile, bringing her hands back to herself, "You're coming on a break and getting security to kick that horrid cow out." Either the cow got kicked out or Jovi was going to start throwing punches, and that probably wouldn't be all that good for business.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
A familiar voice sounded, followed by an all too familiar face. Jovian. Her younger cousin (and her best friend’s girlfriend) was generally enjoyable company, but she was currently drawing attention to Dora’s blunder and making sure everyone around them was aware of it. No doubt Jovi found no fault in her behavior, but Dora scowled. “Just leave it be, Jovi,” she hissed. She didn’t need it getting back to Fin that she’d not collected payment for a drink she had served. She would fill the till from her own pocket and, Merlin willing, it would only be the one bill she would be covering tonight.

Well something had crawled up Dora's arse, dug a little burrow and was living up there for her to be this irritated. She was under far too much pressure and she was taking it out on her loved ones. Jovi felt sorry for her. Poor Dora, her life was a mess at home and it was a mess at work. She needed to let of steam. She needed to be Dora again because if she was going to continue talking that way, then Jovi would just have to get Fin to fire her, or give her a well deserved slap. "Did you hear that, honey?!" She said nudging the guy next to her again without bothering too look at him, she didn't take her eyes of Dora, who was looking paler than usual and were those some serious bags under her eyes or just terrible, terrible lighting? "She is so stressed." Jovi tutted, shaking her head from side to side, as she leant over the bar, "Come on, Dor, just a quick break," she encouraged, "You look like death warmed. Have a quick five and then I'll let you get back to work. You know Fin'll be all pissy if he finds out you're working while not feeling well." She urged, hoping mention of Fin might give her the little kick up her backside she needed to breath a little and have a break. Maybe they could get coffee from somewhere to perk Dora up a little.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Jovi wasn’t letting up. Dora’s lips pursed and she turned away to face the wall of bottles, trying to keep herself from snapping completely at her cousin. Jovi was more than just her cousin, she was also her friend, but at the moment she was being a bit of a bitch in Dora’s opinion. And did she have to flirt with this ugly tosser to make her point, or had she always had such bad taste in men? Well, she had dated Lachlan who Dora supposed looked like he’d had his face bashed in with the proverbial ugly stick, but she was also currently dating Fin who everyone, Dora included, agreed was drop dead gorgeous. Perhaps Jovi just had no standards whatsoever but more likely she was just trying to irritate her cousin.
Dora ground her teeth as Fin’s name was dragged into the conversation. Would Jovi really tattle on her own flesh and blood just to prove she was closer to Dora’s best friend than Dora? No… no Jovi wouldn’t do that. Dora suddenly felt tired. Exhausted even. Maybe she did need a break, if for no other reason than to hunt down her new friend and get a little fix. She just needed a pick-me-up. A little bite and she would be good as new. Yes, a break right now was just what she needed. “Fine,” she resigned, her irritation still present but much more subdued since deciding how she wanted to spend her little break. Dora wiped her hands on a nearby bar towel, flashing an annoyed glance at Jovi before turning and walked the length of the bar away from her cousin. When she reached the end of the bar she stole a quick glance at the other employees, then snatched a bottle of vodka from the shelf and took it with her as she headed toward the employee quarters in the back, steps slowing enough for Jovi to catch up with her.

"Eee!" Jovi squealed in triumph as Dora finally gave in and agreed to a little break. "Well done, honey." She said to the bloke next to her, who just looked thoroughly by the whole situation but offered a confused and timid smile nonetheless. What a stupid prat, Jovi thought. Not that it mattered because as usual, she was able to get her way and that was worth talking to him and getting her cousin to bend to her will. Walking to the end of the bar Jovi caught up with Dora. She snuck her arm through Dora's and looked down at the vodka Dora had in her hand, "Nice!" She beamed at her cousin, letting her lead the way to the staff room or private lounge or whatever. "Let's open this baby up and trash talk some bitches." She encouraged, figuring Dora could do with letting off a little steam and people like that horrid cow back then? Well Dora really needed to let off some choice words about that twat, Jovi would see to it.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
The staff break room was a little thing, with a table and chairs in the middle and a couch along one wall. There was a row of lockers next to the couch a little kitchenette on the next wall. A bulletin board held all the boring legal posters Fin was obligated to hang up, but no one ever read them as far as Dora was aware. The liquor license was framed and hanging over the bar out in the main room, and that was the only piece of documentation that anyone ever seemed to care about. No one really needed to worry about the fire escape route or steps for the Heimlich maneuver – magic could resolve both of those issues without a fuss and certainly no one was looking to Dora for any sort of emergency preparedness know-how so she’d never even bothered to pretend to read it over.
Dora largely ignored her cousin’s rambling, too fatigued to feign excitement over the prospect of ruthlessly judging a well-deserved bitch, and still annoyed at Jovi’s games. She set the vodka bottle on the counter and opened the cupboard over it with a flick of her wand, pulling down two glasses. She filled them both to the brim and levitated Jovi’s over to her, careful not to spill. Dora sat on the arm of the couch, not wanting to wrinkle her dress.

This was the staff area? Oh Finny. He could do much better than this. Jovi didn't care about the other staff but this is where Dora was supposed to spend her time? It did not seem fit enough for Dora. It was an awful and depressing place. It could really do with a sprucing up, a few games here, some gorgeous cushions there, just a place to hang and forget about work rather than sitting around and, waiting to head back to their shifts. "This is ... interesting." She said, closing the door behind her, somewhat afraid to touch the handle for fear of catching something. Did Fin have to come here at all? Merlin she hoped not! He owned the place, he had his very own stylish office and own personal bathroom. Even his bathroom looked better than this staff room. "Cheers!" She said, taking the shot glass and inspecting it. It looked clean enough so she knocked the shot back, gulping it down in one and scrunching her face up. Straight vodka was horrid and she coughed a little, but she was spending time with her cousin and she'd drink as much as Dora offered. Surely after a while that horrid feeling would settle down. "Can't believe that stupid cow. Acting like she's so perfect. Anyone would think she'd not made a mistake her entire life or something." Jovi rolled her eyes and inspected the sofa. She hesitated for a second but decided to sit.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Jovi took her shot quickly, barely having entered the room. Dora looked at her for a moment then sighed and looked away as Jovi moved to the couch. “Cheers,” Dora mumbled too late then tossed back her own shot with ease. She oughtn’t have been drinking while she was at work – she had made that mistake early on in her career and had learned her lesson. Merlin’s beard, was this really to be her career. When had she started thinking of it as more than just a little tide over while she was getting her life together? Fin had given her the job out of pity nearly five years ago and all she had to show for it was a home she hadn’t purchased and a baby without a father. She was infinitesimally better off than she had been after the pair had graduated from Hogwarts but things were finally starting to look up. She had a new friend who gave her something no one else had ever been able to; peace. Since she had met Hunter, Dora hadn’t felt the need to mar her skin with a severing spell, a formerly weekly practice if not more frequent on her bad days. The reprieve hadn’t been long, as of yet, but it was most welcomed, especially now that Dora was having such trouble concentrating and thinking straight. Physically, she felt the need for Hunter as well, having begun to ache and hurt in ways she’d not really experienced before except possibly while in labor, although truthfully her memories of that pain were somewhat dulled now.
Dora “hmm”ed at Jovi’s remark about the bitch from the bar. “I don’t suppose its easy being a decent person on such a high horse.” She looked at her glass and wished it would refill on its own. “You’d think all that fresh air up there would have done something for her skin…” Dora wondered how many drinks she would have to endure with her cousin before she could slip away. At least a few more. She stood and walked the few steps toward the counter, refilling her glass and bringing the bottle back with her so she didn’t have to make the trek a third time. She rested the bottle on the floor in front of the couch between the women, and threw back her second shot as if it were nothing more than water. She hardly tasted it anymore but the buzz would be nice.

Jovi sniggered a little as Dora spoke of the women's horrid skin. True, Jovi didn't get the chance to see the woman properly, but she was willing to bet that she was as hideous outside as she was inside. No one that was beautiful would be that ... well Jovi didn't want to finish that thought, she was often a pain in the arse but she had her daddy to throw money around to keep people happy, meaning she was welcome to continue being as big of a bitch as she wanted to be. "Honestly, Dor," She said, leaning and grabbing the bottle, "You need to find a new job." She'd been here for too long and honestly, she seemed to be looking older than all the other staff. Perhaps that was because of her sleepless nights and having to work, Jovi wasn't sure, but Dora looked as though she was at least five years older than most of the staff, and that wasn't a good look unless you were the manager or something. "Want me to get you an interview in the Ministry?" She asked while pouring her second shot. "I promise it won't be with Fin's daddy." She chuckled, knowing the pair didn't get on, but Aurelius would never say as much to Jovi as he knew she was Dora's cousin. Jovi knocked back another shot and placed the bottle on the floor, her face scrunched up, wondering how in the hell Dora managed to do these things so straight faced.

Oh. My. Merlin. Was Jovi really trying to shame her over being a bartender? Was the job not demeaning enough without her younger cousin acting as if she was better than Dora? “I like my job,” she lied, the offended tone hopefully playing up a sincerity in her words that wasn’t really there. Working at the Starlight wasn’t the worst job in the world, but it wasn’t at all glamorous. She would rather have been on the other side of the bar every night but then she’d not be able to afford to eat. “What? Working here is good enough for your boyfriend but when I do, I’m some sort of rubbish. Is that it?” Dora was irrationally angry by the conversation. The entire interaction with Jovian was rather irritating and Dora wasn’t quite sure why, but she wasn’t feeling well enough to put up with Jovi’s self-righteous dragon dung.

Dora liked her job? Jovi didn't believe that for a second. Sure, it probably had some nice aspects, getting to work with Fin, being the bosses favourite had to have its perks, maybe even some of the other staff were okay to hang out with, but actually like the job itself? Serving drinks to a bunch of arseholes while you yourself had to stay sober? That hardly seemed like something Dora would enjoy. She was definitely on the wring side of the bar, and when she compared her position as a bartender to that of Fin being owner, manager and straight up sex god, Jovi snorted. "Fin owns the place." Jovi laughed, "Owning an establishment is hardly comparable to just working the bar." Jovi chuckled, Dora was clearly in a shitty mood but Jovi wouldn't let Dora ruin her night out. They were family and no matter what they disagreed on, they had to love each other! Perhaps Dora was just too sober to be any fun yet. Hopefully the vodka would lift her spirits a little! "I'll organise that interview for you in the new year. You can't keep being a bartender forever, you've got a kid to think about." What a depressing life that would be!

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Jovi was laughing at her now and Dora couldn’t stand it any longer. Her cousin had clearly come here just to put her down while simultaneously flaunting her perfect ministry career and child-free life. Jovi must have thought the same of Dora as her own mum did; Dora was worthless and her only purpose was to be the lightning rod for everyone else’s hatred. “Oh fuck off, Jovian!” Dora stood promptly, her arms and legs aching for no apparent reason. The energy required to stand in such a huff was tiresome, though really she had already been tired long before this point. She was tired of working all night long then going home to an ungrateful infant that cried and caused the dog to bark throughout the night. She was tired of being reminded of her shortcomings, whether it was as directly as Jovi was doing now or as subtly as Ollie asking if he needed to babysit Pansy again this weekend. She was tired of her life, full stop. Dora’s hands were shaking as she slammed her glass onto the counter as she passed on her way to the exit. She needed something to take the edge off, to help her forget what a wretched life she was leading. She needed a vampire’s kiss to keep her from leaping off a bridge and succumbing to that sweet relief she’d been dreaming of these past few weeks.

Dora snapped and Jovi simply rolled her eyes. Her cousin was getting far too old to continue being such a drama queen. She was a mother now and this was how she chose to behave!? It was pathetic. "Me fuck off?" She breathed a faint laugh, "Perhaps if you fucked off for a while you might learn to grow up. How many handouts do you expect to continue getting, Euphadora? Hmm?" She stood up and straightened her dress, "Jobs, home, babysitter. How long do you expect people to stay by your side if all you do is take, take, take?" Jovi didn't expect any sort of answer - at least not a fully coherent one - and she would always stand by Dora, but she did want her cousin to take a serious look at herself. She was turning on Jovi, her own cousin who was merely trying to help her ascend to a better position and a more favourable lifestyle.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Her stride slowed as Jovi listed off the reasons that others viewed Dora as selfish, the reasons she would be alone forever. It was all true, every word of it, but Dora refused to acknowledge it. She hadn’t asked for her home, it was a gift and she was more than grateful for it. She’d offered to repay Ollie for his babysitting in a way she thought was more than fair – her body, even ruined by motherhood, was worth more than a few sickles and knuts. And she worked hard at her job, even if she had been offered it solely because her best friend owned the place. Dora’s life was crumbling around her but she wasn’t as ungrateful and selfish as Jovi made her out to be. If she had anything to offer anyone she would have, but what did she have that anyone else would want? Nothing. She was all but worthless, save her body and, at least to the vampire she thought she was falling for, her blood.
Dora could snap back at her cousin, she was angry enough to do so even without merit behind her words, but she continued walking out the door. Instead of turning up the corridor that would lead her back to the nightclub and to her job, Dora turned the opposite direction and pushed open the back door, stepping into the freezing night air. The smell of the nearby dumpster hit her nose, which she crinkled and turned up, but she kept walking out of the back alley and then up a smaller alley until she reached the main road. Dora hadn’t had time to do a warming charm on herself before leaving as she normally would have at the end of her shift, and she didn’t have her cloak or even her handbag but she was in too much pain now to think on anything else. Every muscle in her body ached as if she’d been the target of a dozen bludgers. Her hands shook but whether that was the withdrawals or the chill, Dora wasn’t sure. The cold nipped at her bare legs and she folded her arms across herself in attempt to stave off the chill from the wind that blew at her face. Hunter would be able to take away her pain, to make her feel good for a long while, and if she couldn’t find him then any vampire would do. Anything to get Jovi’s nagging truthfulness out of her head.
