Without knocking – which very well could have been a disaster if their younger years were any indication – Hazel pushed open the door to Helley’s quarters and let herself in. “Okay, sit down,” she said in a politely demanding way, not even taking a moment to scan the room to make sure they were alone. “I have news.” She’d been practicing all morning. Gus knew and now it was Helley’s turn. As Hazel’s best friend it couldn’t wait any longer and she’d already been sitting on this news for nearly two full days. She was about ready to burst though Hazel didn’t know it was because of her excitement for the shocking, sudden, and completely surprising news or if the adrenaline pumping was a preemptive response to Helley’s undoubtedly wild reaction. She had already done this whole thing before, but that was nearly seventeen years ago and certainly neither of them had ever expected Hazel to be having this conversation a second time. It was absolutely bonkers, but in such a good way. She was certain this was good news. Shocking, of course. And completely out of the blue. Definitely an accident but a happy accident nonetheless and she couldn’t wait any longer to share her happy news with her best friend.

What in the buggery!? "Dude!?" Helley could have been up to anything, literally annnyyythhiiingg. Barging in on her during her private time was never a wise idea but when she was getting ... intimate, with herself, she liked to lock the door to avoid situations like this. Merlin forbid Hazel should burst in on her while she was up to something her best friend would not want to see in a kazillion years! As it turned out Helley was just done getting changed out of regular clothes and was in her professy robes. She had some teaching to do soon because sometimes she actually did take her job somewhat seriously. "What is it?" She said, sitting herself down on a chair at the small table she had in her room, wondering what was possessing Hazel right now. Was she getting married? Had Bonesy proposedy? She doubted it, the two were seeing each other and they seemed pretty damn smitten, but surely neither of them was stupid enough to rush into marriage again. Admittedly Hazel had good taste, her husband had died, but Bones? Well he was divorced and women generally didn't divorce a bloke unless there was something the matter with them. Admittedly Hazel had known Bones longer than Helley had but Helley was still gonna look out for her best mate!

Thank Merlin Helley wasn’t up to something private because Hazel wouldn’t have been able to cope with walking in on that, nor would she have been able to wait any longer to share the news. Helley sat as instructed and now there was nothing left but to put it out there. “I love Gus,” she said pointedly. Hazel plopped happily into the chair opposite her, wishing almost immediately that Helley had more cushions. The thin padding on the wooden seat was not meant to absorb a happy plop but it was more uncomfortable than painful and didn’t deter Hazel in the slightest. “I haven’t told him that yet, but I do. He’s just so warm, and kind, and smart. He really is incredible. I never thought I’d love anyone after Alvin and I wasn’t planning to start seeing anyone, certainly not while Sophie was still in school or living at home. So obviously all of this comes as a surprise but I’d just found out and I had to tell you as soon as I could because, let’s face it, I can’t keep anything from you.” She was rambling and she didn’t care. Hazel couldn’t stop smiling, she looked like she’d slept with a coat hanger in her mouth.

Seriously. What in the buggery was going on?! Hazel had some kind of strange, demented energy about her and Helley had no freaking idea what to do with that. Did she slap her? Give her a drink? Find a priest? Seriously, what!? Hazel decided to declare her love for Gus and even Helley could have told the rambling nut-bag that she was totally into the Bones-man. She was smitten for him and totally in love, still she wasn't at ease after admitting this to Helley and instead carried on rambling on about something, Helley trying her best to keep up but all she got was Hazel had a secret that she'd not yet told Bones. Well okay, what was she supposed to do with that information exactly? "I'm gonna need a little more than that, hot stuff." She said, leaning over and placing a hand on Hazel's knee, "Breathe, sugar tits, breathe." She said, taking a deep breath in and letting it out again, "Calm your crazy arse down," She said in a soothing voice, "Tell me," She said, "What's the happy haps?" Was it happy haps? Was it possibly saddy haps? Nah, Hazel definitely had the rambling energy of something positive and Helley wanted to know what it was but definitely in a way that she could follow. Having Hazel suddenly in her room and talking her ear off was not something Helley had been expecting.

Nervous wasn’t exactly what Hazel was feeling at that moment, but it was amazing how calming Helley’s hand on her knee actually was. Hazel bit her lower lip excitedly, beaming brightly through it and trying to take a few deep breaths so that she could actually get all the words out properly. Clearly she’d not been doing such a bang up job of it, as Helley was coaching her through breathing just as she had when she’d been in labor with Sophie. The women had been through so much together. Hazel was beyond ecstatic that they had a bit more joy to share. “I’m pregnant,” she finally, her sharp features lighting up as the words rolled off her tongue. “Gus and I are going to have a baby.” She felt a shiver of excitement crawl across her shoulders and down her arms as her own words hit her ears.
She and Gus, together, having a baby. Had anyone at any point in her life told Hazel that she would one day be in love with one of her husband’s old friends, that they’d be pregnant together and both actually excited for it, Hazel wouldn’t have believed it. Gus had been at Hazel and Alvin’s wedding. He had had a wife of his own at one point. They both had children, Sophie was nearly an adult! Gus’ daughter Remy actually was an adult. It was definitely not to be expected that they’d be starting their own little family together at this point in their lives, and there was still a lot that the couple had to discuss, but Hazel was happy. Gus was happy, or so he said, and Hazel really did believe him. His reaction was so honest, you couldn’t help but believe it. It was scary and different and not the least bit planned, but it was wonderful too and Helley simply needed to be a part of it all.

Helley wasn't really the patient sort, as Hazel was well aware, so waiting for her best friend to spill the beans was practically agony. Thankfully Hazel got there, words falling from her mouth that had Helley frozen to her seat for a second. Or maybe a minute. Possibly longer. Time didn't seem to exist right now as Hazel went on about how she and Gus were having a baby. This was insane, right? They'd not even been dating three months ago but now they were having a baby together?! What in the hell!? Clearly there was only one thing Helley could say to that. "What the heck! Congratulations, babe!" She said, standing up and opening her arms, "Bring it in!" She encouraged. Had she expected this news? Oh hell no! Was it any of her business? Hell yes! As Hazel's best friend she needed to know this kind of thing and the only way to ever react was in a supportive way. Helley limited her interactions with other people, she didn't let a whole heap of humans get all that close to her but she knew that Hazel was one in a million, one in a kazillion-billion-jillion actually and so if she was happy, Helley was happy too and if that meant changing nappies again and getting up in the night to feed a screaming mess of a human was happiness in Hazel's eyes then Helley wasn't going to stop Hazel from living her dreams, heck, she'd even take on babysitting duties once in a while!
