All day Clem had been getting these little aches and pains across her back. She knew she’d been pushing herself too hard and Lucian had rightly been nagging her to relax and take care of herself and their unborn child, but Clem found it near impossible to do nothing. She had stacks of books and trashy magazines but there was nothing that could keep her mind from wandering so she’d thought she’d try a little swimming. It was a light activity, no stress, no problems technically, but now she was walking about their cute little home she was regretting her choice of light afternoon activity. “Loosh?” She called through the home, knowing Lucian was probably in his own private study that she liked to stay well away from. That was his own personal space and she didn’t want to intrude on it. She just made her way to the kitchen, the place she was often found these days whenever someone was looking for her. She really had packed on the pounds this pregnancy but by Merlin she’d felt like she’d been starving! With such a small appetite in the beginning of her pregnancy her boyd had done a complete one-eighty and had her practically inhaling food. She was certain she’d scared Lucian with how fast she could consume crappy quick food and thousand galleon gourmet food the same.
The pain crossed her back again and Clem rubbed her hand over her back. Lucian came into the kitchen, checking on her after she’d called and she asked him for a glass of water. He was ever so loving and tender and to look at them the world must have thought they were in love. They weren’t but Clem felt as though they’d become a lot closer in the last twelve months since they neared the end of their engagement, became married and got pregnant. It was all real fast after a year long engagement but it good being married to Lucian. He could have been any kind of bloke, a complete areshole really, but he wasn’t. Lucian Burke was an absolute gentleman and she was lucky to have him.
He got he the glass of water she’d been after and checked her over in the way she’d expected of him. He made a bit of a fuss but not too much and she mentioned the little cramps in her back that she was having, but reassured him it was no big deal, she probably just strained her back a little when she was swimming. He didn’t seem too convinced and decided to stay with her, taking her into the lounge and getting the house elf to make her a cup of raspberry leaf tea.
Chatting away the pain came and went and it wasn’t easing up. It got to the point where Clem had to admit it was probably more than a bit of light muscle sprain. “I think we should probably call the healer.” She said after a particularly sharp pain pulsated through her back, cramping all around and then over the top of her stomach. She was in labour, she was fairly certain, and it was about time she felt, she was almost at her due date and she was rather uncomfortable. Pregnancy had been kind of lovely but there had certainly been ups and downs but it was mostly the hormonal shifts that had her all over the place. “I think this is it.” She said, breathing out low and slow as another what she could only call contraction started building up. She was both excited and terrified all at once.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Lucian had done his homework as a soon-to-be father. He had asked his mum what to expect from their final weeks of pregnancy and then followed those conversations up with questions for his father. What should he do or avoid that would make things easier without getting in the way. Robert Burke had successfully managed a pregnant wife five times over, so Lucian felt confident that even though it had been nearly two decades since they’d had their youngest child, the information would be accurate and helpful. He hoped Clementine saw it that way, too. He propped her feet up on the table in front of the sofa and ordered the house elf to fetch her some tea. Lucian massaged her back as she continued to complain of aches and he was pretty certain he knew what was coming. They appeared to reach the same conclusion at the same time. Lucian nodded, trying to keep a calm appearance on for his wife’s sake but feeling suddenly completely unprepared.
Calling out orders for the house elf, Lucian tried his best to remain calm, his voice shaking a bit as he spoke. “Saxy, ring the healer and then fetch the bags from the wardrobe. Meet us at St Mungo’s. Have them get a room ready.” Lucian wanted a private room at the hospital, not one of those shared rooms where they would be forced to endure some other family’s drama. He adored Clem, but he figured one new mum would be drama enough, thank you very much. Turning to Clem, he extended his arms to assist her off the sofa. “Let’s get you to the carriage, darling. Nice and easy.” Apparating would have been so much quicker, but it wasn’t safe for pregnant women and in labor Clem would no doubt splinch herself and their child if they even attempted. He was cussing internally, completely freaking out. Were they ready for this? Was he ready for this? Shit, no!

The pains Clem had been experiencing weren't anything she thought were too troublesome, she'd entertained the notion that this might be as bad as it would get but she knew that wouldn't be the case. She'd been told all kinds of stories and she truly wasn't prepared for child birth. It didn't matter how much she learnt about the subject and the changes her body would be going through, Clem was not prepared in the slightest. She took a few deep breaths while Lucian seemed to be organising things in the background and Clem rubbed her hand over her stomach, feeling it tighten. The pain was certainly getting worse, these were definitely contractions and Clem wanted to move around. She stood up with Lucian's help and paced the floor with each little contraction, she hadn't expected it to feel like this at all and it was horrible. The very idea that it would be getting worse was something Clem dreaded for only a moment before the next contraction started. She held herself upright, rocking and swaying before she made a few more steps towards the front of the house. She knew she needed to reach the carriage but she was finding it hard to convince her body to head in that direction.
After the wave had passed, Clem made her way to the front door, pausing and rocking her body once more. They were coming more frequently, lasting for longer, feeling more intense. Breathing and rocking her way through her latest contraction felt a little easier with the fresh air she could suck into her lungs. The cold grey afternoon was at least free from rain and snow although it was cold, Clem didn't feel the need for any extra layers, in fact she felt really rather hot. The sight of the carriage was a welcome one, they were another step closer to having their baby. Clem climbed in on her own, feeling the need to remain untouched. She took a seat, leaning back and resting her head as another contraction washed over her. She rubbed her belly, breathing in deep, letting the cold air get to her skin by lifting up her jumper, just leaving her white top over her belly. Her bags were packed and stowed, the Healer hopefully informed of their impending arrival and all they had to do now was have their baby, a beautiful little mix of Nott and Burke.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
The carriage ride felt like an eternity. At one point, the expression of Clementine’s face in the midst of a contraction made Lucian damn near certain the baby would be born before they ever made it to hospital but he kept every fear and anxiety-ridden thought to himself as he painstakingly tried to ensure Clem felt supported. He rubbed her belly and her back and even attempted to rub her feet though it wasn’t really possible nor comfortable inside the carriage. He told her to squeeze his hand if she needed to and didn’t even pull a face when she squeezed it so hard he thought she’d broken it. She hadn’t, of course.
Finally, the excruciatingly long ride was over and before long they were all checked in. Lucian stood in at the edge of their private delivery room, one of many on the maternity wing. Clementine’s bags had been waiting for them on the chair near the window which meant that Saxy had accomplished at least a few of her tasks in the time it took the Burkes to arrive at the hospital. “You’re brilliant, you know that?” he asked his wife rhetorically, watching as she breathed deeply as the latest contraction subsided. His hand was still red from where her strong grip had been squeezing it only a moment ago, but he brushed a few strands of hair from her face with it. Soon they would have a tiny little baby to hold and Lucian had been assured he would feel at ease at that point, but it seemed so far off. He knew it was a long process, but he had expected it to go a bit quicker than this. He was anxious to meet his child and tired of the tension all this stress from worrying was putting in his neck.

Getting to the hospital was what Clementine could only describe as 'uncomfortable' She couldn't get up and move around and she knew that if she kept pulling the coach over to walk off her contractions then they'd never get to the hospital and she'd have their baby, their first born child, on the side of some dirty road! She was never going to let that happen and so while Lucian tried to help her feel more comfortable it only became awkward.
Eventually they arrived at the hospital and Clem was taken to her room. She paid no attention to it as she walked about. She had no idea of who was coming and going, the only thing she care about was Lucian. He was in her presence and he was a calming influence. He encourage her to breathe and his touch was soothing. The contractions were still coming in intense waves but she was able to manage them as she focused on his voice, his touch and his scent.
The hours went by and Clem grew tired and she'd lost all pretence of modesty, losing her clothes and the hospital robe, irritated by anything touching her skin. She'd crushed Lucian's hands countless times, alternated between resting against the bed, walking around, laying on her side and going on all fours. Eventually the time came and the urge to push was overwhelming. She heard a female voice speaking to her, positioned somewhere behind her as she rested her head on the pillow, still on all fours on the bed. She was told to breathe, nice and deep. She groaned as another contraction came, pulsing across her stomach and round her back, forcing her to push. Contraction after contraction, pushing after pushing she knew her baby was coming closer to the world but she couldn't take the time to enjoy that thought. Another contraction hit, her body trying to expel the baby while the matron urged her to just breath slowly. Soon the head was out. One more contraction and the body followed. The matron passed the baby up through Clem's legs as she turned to sit on the bed. The little darling cried and Clem held the slipper blue thing against her chest, looking down at it in absolute amazement. Their child was here. She'd done it, she pushed her baby into the world and there it was, on her chest, crying with eyes tight shut, getting pinker and pinker by the second as it took more and more oxygen into its lungs. Someone had pulled a blanket up over her bent legs and she looked up at Lucian, smiling beyond belief before she looked back at their child as she rubbed her hand over its back, shhing and pulling the blanket up over them, forgetting to even check to see if they had a son or daughter because right now, it didn't even matter to Clem, she was entirely in love with someone she'd just met for the first time in her life.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Lucian was growing impatient, he couldn’t imagine how Clementine was feeling despite witnessing for himself the excruciating looks on her face and guttural noises she produced as wave after wave of contractions hit. They were coming closer together now, hardly any time for her to recover before the next began. It was all Loosh could do to talk her through them as they hit her and sing her praises in the interim. She was sweaty and naked and growling like a beast but Lucian couldn’t help but be amazed by her all the same. Hours had passed, time had slowed, and the world around them disappeared before finally the healer announced, “it’s a boy”. Wrinkly, strangely colored, and not at all what Lucian had expected the child to look like, more alien than human at first glance, they finally had a son and he was perfection. Lucian smiled down at Clem in amazement as she grinned up at him. Their babe wrapped his mother’s arms looked so comfortable. “You did it,” he whispered to Clementine. They were parents now but the weight of what that would mean was pushed off for the joy that Lucian felt in that moment. He had a child, a son, and heir. He was a daddy.
