I bet you feel like a real big fish, swimming around in your puddle of piss Seams like you got a death wish, if you’re coming at the King you better not miss TAG: @open/FELLOW AUROR. WORDS: 424. NOTES: credit to Meghan Linsey & Aloe Blacc for Lyrics. It was an early April morning as the young freshly new Auror, Alvar Bellerose made his way through the lobby of the Ministry which was extremely less populated at such an early time in the morning. This was normal for Alvar when he was unable to asleep to come in and sneak some time looking at cold cases or current cases he had trying to narrow down a lead or whatever he needed. He had a hard time sleeping when he couldn’t stop thinking about Silva his wife and their son Dion being killed and him finding them murdered in his own home. The Auror office, the one he worked for had failed to find an actual suspect for it and Alvar’s claims that his older brother had did it couldn’t be backed up with any evidence to even question a man like Alvar’s brother. He gave a sigh as his mind just thought about how justice had gone unserved for his family, pushing the button for the second floor of the Ministry.
”You need to look at one of your caseswhispered Alvar to himself as the lift came to a stop on the second floor. He made his way down a hallway before going into the open spaced Auror office of cubicles finding his that was down at one end facing a wall giving him only a person to his left no one to his right. Throwing his coat onto his chair he took a seat in it and looked out around his little office space. The walls of his cubicle were filled with pictures of wanted dark wizards, a photo of his wife and son, as well as pictures of different landmarks related to dark magic that showed a newly Hogwarts grad, Alvar standing in the photos.
Taking out a file from his desk he started looking through it, it was the murder of a pure-blood wizard who had just recently been found by muggles along the shores of Medway River. Alvar had been assigned the case and so far, the usual theory of the Death Eaters did it didn’t hold up in this case. The man was pure-blood and his family was not known to be blood traitors and they haven't been suspected as death eaters either. Nothing of it so far pointed to a murder because of ideology or anything to do with the Death Eaters. ”Who the hell killed you, my man?” said Alvar as he looked at the photo of the man’s dead body by the river.

Absence of Sleep
Kit unscrewed the top of his large flask off, turning it upside down so that he could use it as a cup for his tea. He actually had his own cup in the staff room at work, one with a picture of a black Labrador puppy on it, but that was for the day time when the Auror office was crowded, and people were popping in and out making crappy cups of coffee and tea for themselves because they didn't fancy queuing up in the canteen for one. He didn't fancy using the crappy work teabags his colleagues were so fond of by daylight, so he had made his own flask of his favourite brand at home and took it with him. It was the middle of the week, and three in the morning, but that was no excuse not to enjoy the things you liked while you sat at your desk looking over case files because sleep wasn't your friend. Kit was having a strange week. Mother's Day had been only a week ago. A week and three days, to be exact, and it had played havoc with Kit's mind, as it usually did. He had taken pink roses to lay at her grave, and he had had dinner with Ollie and their dad to mark the occasion, but missing his mother was never something that got easier for Kit.
She had died when he was just a boy, and he had had to grow up fast to help his dad look after their family, what with Max being a vampire and unable to leave the house in the sunlight, it limited their father on what he could do to care for his children, and so Kit had had to step in, being the eldest, and figure things out. Max worked his hardest to bring in money during the night, and Kit looked after his siblings in the day while their dad slept. It wasn't fair, and it wasn't always fun despite Kit trying to make it so for the little ones that looked up to him, but it was nothing compared to how unfair it was that they all had to grow up without a mother. He managed to block it out most days, to keep the sorrow at a low volume, but mother's day always gave it a boost. He missed his mum. What he wouldn't give for one hug from her, one smile, one conversation so that she could tell him she was proud of who he had grown up to be. It would never come, and he needed it so much. He had been having nightmares all week. Beautiful dreams of time with Liliana, causing him to wake in tears. Coming in to the office to keep his mind busy had seemed like a good idea, but the silence only gave him more room to dwell on thoughts he didn't want.
He had been wandering the office, pulling files from drawers, doing bits of research for his cases tomorrow - Merlin knew how he would survive the day with no sleep - and pouring himself more tea when he heard the lift. Someone else was coming. Strange for the middle of the night. Kit sat at his desk in his little cubicle, staying hidden behind the partition as he heard footsteps approach, getting closer and closer to his location. Who the heck was it? He was tempted to peep over the top of the partition, but that was a stupid idea. What if the building had been infiltrated by Death Eaters and he was about to announce his presence to one of them and end up in a fight to the death - undoubtedly his own death - all because he had the urge to peek? Then again, what if it was just Alvar Bellerose settling himself in at his own desk beside Kit's and muttering to himself over case files in front of him? That seemed more likely, considering it was Alvar and Kit was being dramatic and paranoid. You could never be too careful, though. Standing up, he peered over the top of the partition at the dark haired guy he had gone through two years Auror training with, and cleared his throat. "If only they could answer," he said, golden eyes staring intensely at the picture of the dead man at the top of the file Alvar was looking through. Lots of pictures could talk in the wizarding world, but general photographs were not so magical, unfortunately.

I bet you feel like a real big fish, swimming around in your puddle of piss Seams like you got a death wish, if you’re coming at the King you better not miss Alvar had not even noticed that someone else had been in the office when he had come in and made his way to his desk. His thoughts had been so buried in Silva and Dion and trying to find a way to not think about them clouded his senses. Thankfully the voice when he heard it was not one of a Death Eater, which would have been dreadful, but of a fellow Auror named Kit. Kit had been a year ahead of Alvar in their training to be Aurors, but they had to be with each other for two years of the training and they had worked together since after Alvar became an Auror. He didn’t have any problems with Kit and had always gotten along with him, minus him being a goody two shoes Angel on Alvar’s shoulder at times. Alvar was known for pushing the boundaries at work and even while in training. He would bend the lines if it meant he could catch the person he was looking for, and if the Ministry allowed him to work on his family’s case he would have simply redraw the line to his own liking.
Kit on the other hand Alvar’s eyes now meet his that peered over the patriation next to his cubicle, was always the angel on his shoulder telling him not to do that and that it wasn’t how they did things as Aurors. Sometimes he wanted to strangle the guy. ”Blimey Kit Kat, sneaking up on me in the dark? Shouldn’t you be at home sleeping, or is this my regular scolding from my guardian angel?”asked Alvar as he teased his fellow Auror. He couldn’t help but make the joke as he remembered the muggle candy bar his wife was always crazy about. Plus, Alvar lived for humor and he only made jokes of those he truly liked or cared about. Putting the photo down on his desk he just gave a sigh if only what kit said was true because it would make solving crimes so much easier. ”It would certainly make our jobs easier…well pull up a chair buddy I guess were both here because we can’t sleep” spoke Alvar as he waved his wand to pull a chair from a empty cubicle across from them over near his for Kit.
Alvar wasn’t exactly sure if a certain reason plagued Kit and prevented him from sleeping but Alvar had a few from his family’s death and to the rest of his family wanting him dead, ready to show up looking for blood anytime. His eyes left where Kit was looking over the patriation back to the photo of the man dead by the river.

Absence of Sleep
Relaxing considerably now that he knew who he was sharing the office with at this time of night - morning? - Kit rubbed a hand through his hair, leaving it sticking up in ten different directions, though he hardly noticed. It was a habit he had when he was nervous, ruffling his own hair, his dad used to tell him it would fall out if he didn't leave it alone, but it was just his thing. A quirk, a comfort when he felt on edge or embarrassed. Or when he was in the presence of someone really good looking and had no idea what to say to them. There were lots of things that triggered the small act, though it probably wasn't the best idea to scruff himself up around someone he had a crush on. Luckily there weren't many who fell into that category. Alvar certainly didn't, and Kit felt comfortable in his company. Of course Alvar's family had a reputation, and Alvar himself had fought to change the way he had been raised, to be a better person. There would always be a niggling doubt there, but the man deserved a chance for a better life than what he had been living before, Kit would give him that at least.
"I can't really nag you for doing the same thing I'm guilty of, can I," Kit laughed, moving around the partition and catching the chair Alvar summoned for him to sit on. He turned it so it was facing him and sat on it backwards, resting his arms on the back rest, his long legs stretching out in front of him as he rolled himself closer to the desk and Alvar. "What's your excuse?" he asked, wondering if Alvar had any particular reason for his insomnia like Kit did, or if it was just general restlessness. Kit wasn't one to pry usually, and if Alvar fobbed him off with some lame answer, Kit would take it and move on. He wasn't sure whether he wanted to divulge his own reasons to the Alvar, either, talking about his family wasn't something Kit often did on a deeper level. Shallow conversations were fine, but when it came to his mother, that wasn't something for just anyone to hear about. He could always just claim he'd had a headache that was too severe to sleep through, or that a case was playing on his mind and he hadn't been able to resist coming into work to look it over in the quiet of the night.

I bet you feel like a real big fish, swimming around in your puddle of piss Seams like you got a death wish, if you’re coming at the King you better not miss His thoughts focused on who had killed the man in the photo as he just looked at it. The man had various scars that had been noted in the case report, suggesting he was tortured with various spells. Then killed and dumped along the river, where the body would be discovered by muggles. The person apparently didn’t care about the body being discovered, if they did they would have hidden it better. No spells or anything were used to weigh the body down, meaning it just floated along the river before being washed up to the shore. His thoughts broke away as he looked over at Kit as he spoke and laughed about not being able to nag Alvar for the same thing he was doing. He give a small grin to the fellow Auror ”Just give it a little bit you’ll be nagging me like some old lady” he said with a little chuckle. Despite all his complaining about Kit and his ‘nagging’, Alvar appreciated the younger but more experienced Auror’s advice and constant tips. He knew he needed someone to look out for him and make sure he didn’t end up blowing his career away by breaking too many rules.
He wasn’t sure how to respond to Kit asking him about what his excuse was not for sleeping. On one hand, he could tell him about how his family’s death and the rest of his family wanting him dead kept him up at night. Or he could just go with the usual bullshit excuse that his mind was just too focused on a case. As much as he was interested in the current case in front of him, it wasn’t enough to make him not be able to sleep. ”uhmmmm… just a lot on my mind” said Alvar reluctantly with a shrug as he started fidgeting around with the case file by going through it like he was looking for something. Part of him wanted to be able to speak to someone about everything, but Kit wasn’t a close friend as much as Alvar liked him and got along with him at work. Plus, he was his guardian angel if anything, not his shrink. ”So Kit Kat, why are you here so early? Was it because you just wanted to be such a great buddy and help me with this damn case” said Alvar with a light laugh and grin as he called Kit by the nickname he had unceremoniously given to him against his will as well.

Absence of Sleep
Kit's face contorted in what could only be described as denial. "I don't even nag," he said, knowing that he was perfectly capable of it when the mood struck. Especially at the office with the people he had to work with, the people who didn't work in the same efficient manner that he did, the people who had messy desks and unpredictable habits and other unsettling patterns of behaviour. Okay, he did nag. He nagged a fair amount to those people. It was all done in a caring way, though. He cared that they did their job properly, and also in the case of Dorcas, he cared about annoying her just a fraction of the amount that she annoyed him. Alvar was different, though, Kit being on his tail for things was actually because he cared about the guy not getting himself killed, or fired, or fired and then killed. That would be a crappy day.
Alvar deflected Kit's question by turning it onto Kit instead. That was fine, Kit had half expected it, but he did laugh at Alvar's suggestion of why Kit was there. "Of course, I consulted my crystal ball and saw you sitting here all alone," he laughed, stretching his legs out and taking a minute to consider whether he should tell Alvar the truth or not. He didn't want to talk about his mum, not to anyone right now, not even Ollie. His dreams were upsetting the past few nights, and he hadn't even bothered to knock on his brother's door to talk about it. Talking to Alvar wasn't really an option all things considered, and so he supposed going along with the joke was the best option. "Do you need help?" he asked, tone serious now as he rolled his chair closer to the desk and picked up the file that Alvar was agonising over. Kit hadn't seen the case before, so he would be looking at it with no prior knowledge of it, which might actually be of some help, to have a fresh set of eyes to see through. If Alvar really needed someone to give him a hand with it, then Kit was always willing to help out, even if it was more than he needed to do. Jumping in on other Auror's cases wasn't something that was usually done, but it wasn't against the rules to get an opinion from someone else in the office.
