Getting married wasn’t anywhere near as daunting as everyone kept informing Clem that it would be. Sure the wedding preparations were a lot more work than she’d expected but honestly, with the amount of money her parents were throwing at this wedding she had honestly expected people to not be such giant idiots in a profession they were dedicated to. Still they were idiots and she had to deal with them all. In private she’d lose her absolute mind at the workers but in front of her fiancé and his family she was about as sweet as could be. Lucian seemed like a very lovely man and his parents had been some of the few rare couples that actually married for love in the wealthy, wizarding world. She and Lucian didn’t have that but she was told often enough that they would grow to love one another. Clem actually wasn’t that bothered either way. She was too focused on her career and role as a death eater to worry about things like love. She had no idea what Lucian was focused on in his life beside his apothecary but it would be interesting to see where he stood on her being a death eater once they were married, and she certainly had no intentions of telling him until they were man and wife.
Today the flowers had been finalised, a few changes here and there from the original order but nothing that wasn’t workable, there was still plenty of time after all. Her mother and sister had joined her, as well as her future mother-in-law. All the women had a most enjoyable day who made Clem rather happy. It wasn’t often she got to spend a little personal time with her future mother-in-law but this was certainly something that helped bond the two families. Clem only had to repeat herself a handful of times to the florist but because her future mother-in-law was present she held back her tongue, despite the glance she noticed her sister throw to her mother - and rightly so, Clem would have gone off the broomstick handle had Elisabetta not been around. After the flowers was a girly lunch. Polite talk and all that etiquette she’d been raised to perfect. Light laughter, flutes of the finest champagne and strawberry garnishes. After the lightest lunches humanly possible the ladies parted ways, Clem returning home to her apartment with her little sister in tow. After a little, or perhaps a lot of venting and some actual food, Evie headed home leaving Clem alone and ready for an evening by herself which meant comfy clothes.
After changing in to something far more relaxing, and entirely un-lady like, Clem tied her hair up in a ponytail and grabbed herself a glass of water from the kitchen, happily bouncing along to a little tune in her head that had been there for a couple of days now. She was happy to be home, to have no plans and to finally relax for a while. A bubble bath and some relaxing music would be sure to help her unwind. There were only five weeks and one day until the wedding and she supposed she should have been far more stressed than she should have been but in Clem’s mind this was all just some high end party for those worthy enough to attend. There would be pureblood royalty - which Lucian practically was as his family were known for their wealth - then there would be the most influential people in the wizarding world too. This Minister for Magic would be there, Abraxas Malfoy also. It was all for herself and Lucian, and Clem was certain she’d enjoy her satin the spotlight but she wasn’t all that ruffled by it all.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
Lucian had the great fortune of being a male who was essentially unneeded in most of this wedding planning process. There wasn’t much he needed to do, certainly not any substantial amount that would compare to what Clementine was dealing with. When he was included, or his opinion was requested, Lucian was not the sort of man who would whine and moan about having to decide between the cream and the eggshell tablecloths, or whether they should have junior ushers or simply stick with traditional adult ushers. He ran a business for Merlin’s sake, so he could easily manage to make a few decisions here and there if it made things easier on his bride-to-be. He was quite used to making decisions in the day to day of things and he had heard enough from the women of his family that planning a wedding was rather stressful on the bride. Although Lucian did not know Clementine as well as he would have hoped considering their impending nuptials, he knew that he didn’t want to start their relationship off on rocky ground. Lucian was happy to help in any way that made the women in his life happy.
It just so happened that today he was not needed, but he had heard from his mother that it was a big day in the planning process. They were to finalize the flowers, and exactly how that was such a big deal was a complete mystery to Lucian, but he respected it nonetheless. Clem had been working double time, planning the wedding while also maintaining her full-time position at the Ministry of Magic as the Junior Undersecretary to the Minister herself. If his mum expected it to be a long day, then he would respond accordingly, and hopefully his surprise appearance at Clementine’s flat would be viewed favorably.
He had no set plans for the evening, well, nothing that couldn’t be easily changed should Clem decide she wanted an evening alone after such a busy day. There was a reservation at a restaurant for them, and a table reserved at one of the nicer pubs in the city. If she did desire to spend time with him, but did not want to go out, he was also prepared to cook her a nice dinner at home. His knuckles rapped on the door as he stood in the hall just outside her apartment, a box of chocolates in hand. He was dressed for the evening in something that would work for whichever option Clementine chose; a nice button-down shirt and a pair of slacks. It was neither posh nor slovenly. It was utterly Lucian.

There was a knocking at the door and Clem poked her head out of the kitchen. She wasn't expecting anyone this evening and her parents wouldn't just show up at her place, they had no interest in visiting her little home unless she invited them, and she never truly invited them because she knew they'd rather do anything in their own home, and she was happy to visit her childhood home. They had far more space than she and she wanted her parents to be comfortable in their surrounds. At least she knew they would visit if she extended a proper invite and made plans with them for it, but really it was too small. Her brother and sister were more likely to visit and were always welcome anytime, they didn't need to let her know they were coming over, instead they were welcome to knock on her door, just like now, and know they were allowed in any time they liked so of course she thought it was one of her siblings, who else would it possibly be?
Clem placed her glass of water down on the kitchen counter and made her way towards the front door. She tip-toed up to the peep hole and saw who had been knocking. Lucian? She didn't have a date with him because she'd been dealing with his mother all night and figured she'd just want to relax. Elisabetta wasn't too bad but her and her own mother with wedding talk added on top was a pain in the backside from Clem's point of view, and she'd had to miss a whole day of work, though she had just worked twelve days straight so she supposed she could have done with the time off really. Clem only wished she'd known he was coming over because she would have looked that part of gorgeous fiancée. Nice dress, high heels, hair all done, make up absolute perfection. Right now she was not perfection but she couldn't keep him waiting any longer.
Pulling open the door, Clem took a step back and tilted her head, a smile spreading as she looked at the tall and handsome Burke that was her fiancé. She was one damn lucky woman. She'd never expected to land herself a guy as cute as Lucian nor as wealthy but she wasn't complaining, not by a long shot. It was a respectable marriage between two exceedingly pure lines so it made sense and they were the top of the elite. Once she was married to Lucian and his weird sister married to Rabastan Lestrange, she'd be related to the most respectable and affluent family in the entire Wizarding World. "Lucian!" She said with surprise and awe, "I wasn't expecting you this evening," But she found she was rather happy to see him, "Come in." She said, stepping aside and holding the door open for him. She had no idea why he was visiting but it was rather lovely to spend a bit of extra time with him to try and get to know him before their upcoming wedding!

Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
He wasn’t left waiting in the hallway very long. Soon after knocking he heard the gentle fall of footsteps on the other side of the door, then a pause. The light of the peephole turned dark as Clementine looked out into the hall from the safety of her flat. There was another moment of silent, then the sound of the locks being undone and the door opening. Clem smiled at him as she greeted him, and it made Lucian happy to know that his showing up on her doorstep unannounced was not met with annoyance. At least not outwardly. “I hope I’m not intruding,” Lucian replied as he crossed the threshold into her apartment, leaning forward to kiss her on the cheek as he did so.
“I thought you might be up for a bit of company that did not involve our parents and a tedious guest list.” Judging by her outfit, Clem was preparing for a quiet evening in, and in all honesty the sight of her in lounge trousers was really rather pleasing. Not in a perverted manner, mind you, though it wasn’t necessarily a turn-off, but more that it bode well for their home life after they were married and settled into a groove. His sisters, as much as he loved them, were rather high maintenance and even in her sleep Lilith insisted on being the most fashionable person in the building, wearing nightgowns as if she were about to walk the runway in Milan. If that had been Clementine’s personality, then he would be well used to it and he was sure they would settle into a comfortability with each other soon enough, but that she was a little more down to earth in her nightly attire was a sign that perhaps she was a little more down to earth in other ways as well. Or perhaps he was overthinking things.
He waited until she had shut the door properly and closed out any nosey neighbors, should she have a problem with that sort. He really didn’t know. He and Clementine had known each other for a while, their parents ran in the same circles which of course meant they too ran in similar social circles, but before the engagement there hadn’t been too much to their relationship. Everything between them was rather superficial, but of course superficial things were of some importance. Clementine was beautiful, she was well educated and a driven woman, considering her position in the Ministry. Her lineage was superb and family’s financial standing was respectable. On paper she was the perfect bride for him, but a marriage did not consist of just the superficial things and Lucian prayed that his duty as a son and the heir to his family’s name and fortune would not cost him his happiness.
Extending the box of chocolates he had brought with him, he offered them to her. “I figured you would be sick of flowers at this point.” And what woman didn’t love chocolate?

Time was closing in and their wedding would be upon them before they knew it. Clementine didn't really mind Lucian's family all too much, they were about the same as anyone else's really, although his two older sisters were rather snobbish but the youngest seemed okay enough. Clem was more than aware that the stance she and her sister took in the wizarding world separated them from amongst their own, they were seen as a little weird by many but with their ministry jobs and being female, they were needed to be kind to just about everyone they met and she just hoped Lucian wouldn't hold it against her. At least after they were married she'd be able to share her little secrets with him and hopefully, she thought, he wouldn't be too intimidated by her. There weren't many female Death Eaters in the ranks, a lot of women just didn't have the stomach to do what needed to be done, but Clem and her sister were not like that, sure they seemed welcoming and cheery on the outside, but if you knew the real Nott sisters, they were really rather ruthless and a little twisted if she was being completely honest!
"Not at all," She smiled, they still had that little awkward 'I don't really know you all that well so I'm going to put on a super lovely act' kind of vibe going on, Clem always had some kind of act on but she found she was gradually lowering it was Lucian, a little at a time, and this evening, as much of a surprise as it was to see Lucian, she was pleased he had visited, even if it was unannounced and she was in her relaxing gear, ready to settle down for the night. "That's so sweet of you, Lucian." She smiled, stepping next to him and reaching her arm up towards him. As he leant down a little for her she slipped her arm over the tops of his shoulders and kissed his cheek. Letting him go she took the chocolates with a smile and took hold of his hand, leading him off towards the kitchen, "Can I get you anything?" She asked, looking back over her shoulder, "Tea, water ... half a bottle of gin." She jested with a cheeky grin before turning the corner with Lucian into her little kitchen space. It wasn't a large or extravagant flat but it was her own little space and it was comfortable for her. She spent a lot of her time working or planning a wedding these days so it wasn't as if she was in need of anything any larger than this for the time being and soon she and Lucian would have their own place.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
The continued appreciation of his presence was a good sign. They were still new to this, being a couple. Lucian had had girlfriends in the past, but never a fiancée. He had come close once before. He would have asked for Kathleen’s hand in marriage had he not found out that she was already betrothed and that he was the kept man. Kathleen was the reason Lucian had never bothered with seriously searching for a fiancée of his own, and the reason his parents had arranged with the Notts to marry off their daughter Clementine to him. He enjoyed the time spent with Clem, but he had not chosen her. She was not his true love, nor did he ever think she would be, but she was a fine woman and she would make a good wife and mother. He would be a dutiful son and continue the family name into the next generation. Until the time came, however, any relations he and Clementine had were protected. They were careful and with good reason. There would be no bastards to carry on the Burke name.
His hand releasing the chocolates into hers, Lucian looked around the flat. It was rather modest for a witch of her standing, but it wouldn’t be required for long. Their wedding was nearing and then they would have a house of their own. She could keep her little apartment for the time being. “No, I’m fine, thank you. I was actually curious as to whether you had had tea yet, but it looks like you’re ready to settle in for the night, so I doubt you’d want to get dressed up for a posh meal.” His words were not judging, but warm and he smiled as if they had long been friends. He didn’t want to bore her with wedding talk, and if she wished to continue her busy day with more chatter about their upcoming nuptials it would be on her to start the conversation. He much preferred using these moments to get to know her, not what her mother liked in the way of bridesmaid dresses and centerpieces.

The idea of an evening with Lucian was actually quite charming in many aspects, even tonight his company was well received for Clem knew she only had a short time to get to know her fiancé before he would become her husband, and she'd rather get to know as much about him as possible while she wasn't tied down to him. Who knew, perhaps she'd unEarth some insane notion that he was actually secretly some muggle loving fool and it would be enough to call off the wedding and perhaps give her a second chance to find someone she actually loved to settle down with. It was probably quite unlikely. Lucian seemed pretty normal and anti-muggle and she could have married worse. She'd do her duty and become his wife, she'd give him children - hopefully a couple of heirs right off the wand. Her position at the Ministry would not be in danger, she would work all through her pregnancy and once her child was born it would be raised by just about everyone else. She would of course have a continuous presence in her child's life, her parents had been constant in hers, but she had more to do than just be around from time to time. Clem could remember her parents being actively involved in her upbringing but there was no way Clem would give up her career for her children, perhaps if she loved Lucian she'd find a way, but there was no love. She liked him but love was too far to stretch and was possibly never going to happen.
"Aww," She cooed with a coy little smile, it was sweet that Lucian had been thinking of her but a meal out was entirely not necessary. She and Evie had absolutely gorged themselves when they'd gotten back to the flat and Clem knew she wasn't going to be able a decent meal for the next week or her dress would need expanding and Lucian's oh-so-lovely sisters would never let her live down how horrendously huge she was. Of course Livia wasn't so much the issue, it was the other two that seemed to think they were better than everyone else. Well Clem was comfortable enough with who she was to not let them bother her. She'd carry on being Clem because clearly she was a fantastic match for Lucian, all four parents must have thought so for the arranged marriage to go ahead. "That's so sweet of you, Lucian." He was clearly very thoughtful and not in the slightest bit pushy. She was glad she wasn't marrying the type of man that would demand she get dressed up to go out for the evening when she was clearly ready for a night on the couch with a good book. "After rabbit food for lunch Evie and I kind of had our fill when we got back here, but if you want something to eat I'd be happy to make you something, or we could order something in, what do you fancy?" Because if he was planning on asking her out for dinner then he hadn't yet eaten and she wasn't just going to let him starve. She thought of summoning the family house elf to come make something for Lucian but she was rather capable in the kitchen and thought it rather more personal for her to make him something than to have something else made in her home for him by something else.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
There was an ease about spending time with Clementine that boded well for their future together. He was certain they could be friends. A friendly marriage was more than some were afforded and Clem seemed to truly be a lovely woman. She was well mannered, poised, and attentive but there was also a bit of humor to their interactions which made her more than just a Stepford Wife. Lucian wasn’t sure whether love would be in their future. He had already loved someone, madly and deeply, but the gods did not wish it to be. Clementine wouldn’t replace Kathleen in his heart but perhaps he would find her own space there.
Lucian chuckled lightly at his fiancee’s assertion that her lunch with their mothers had been ‘rabbit food’. He turned his back on her lounge, which he had been admiring – she had good taste, if not a little on the bland side, but it was certainly better than some apartments he had seen – and turned to face Clementine. “Please don’t tell me my mother was bullying you into watching your weight.” His mum meant well, of course, but Lucian had witnessed her far too often noting what his sisters could do better to keep their trim figures, reminding them that they would not always be blessed with the metabolism of a young women. It was done out of love but that hadn’t stopped his younger sister Lyra from sneaking out of bed in the dead of night to steal a cookie and then exercise while eating it, thinking no one had seen her. Lucian knew everything his siblings did while they had lived together. It was his duty to know, in order to keep them safe.
“Don’t be silly,” he said, his hand raising in a friendly gesture that wiped away any notion that she needed to prepare him some meal that he would be eating alone in her presence. “The whole point of my visit was to pamper you, not to force you into the kitchen. I’ll just have some crisps or something easy. I’d much rather spend the evening together, there will be plenty of time to watch you dance around the kitchen when we’re married.” He smiled but almost immediately wondered if his joke had not landed as he had expected it to. Yes, as his wife there was some level of expectation that she see to meals and the housekeeping, but they would have staff for most of that and Lucian actually enjoyed doing a bit of cooking himself. Clementine, however, didn’t yet know that about her fiancée. She may have made an educated guess, knowing his skill with potions making and how the skills transferred easily from potion to supper, or his mum might have mentioned it during one of their many wedding planning dates, but Lucian had yet to share this little hobby with his bride-to-be and he now wondered whether she thought he was insinuating that her role would be as a laboring housewife and nothing more. These were the joys of an arranged marriage.

Bullying? Every woman in society was bullying every woman in society into watching their weight. Nothing needed to be said because it was just expected that one would know that others were judging her on her weight and that if she gained even half a pound she'd be swooped on by mothers, aunts, grandmas, sisters and mother in laws to be! Clem was not going to let that happen to her, she was careful enough with what she ate, she wasn't going to do anything differently besides lose a couple of pounds in the coming month. If you gained even the slightest you were accused of letting yourself go, if you lost too much you were accused of starving yourself and trying to hard, and that was entirely unacceptable too, but a couple of pounds? Well that was seen as a little effort and acceptable. People would say she 'looked good' all because she'd lost the equivalent weight to a couple of bags of flour. It was ridiculous but a game Clem was expected to play all the same. "Oh Morgana, no." She reached out a hand to Lucian's arm and rubbed him a couple of times gently, hoping to reassure him that he had absolutely nothing to worry about with regards to his mother. It was really rather sweet in a way, most men, Clem thought, would just skip over that entirely, not even think about why their fiancée was eating rabbit food at lunch, they'd probably just assume that was what all women ate. Well not this one and certainly not Evie either! "I wouldn't dream of it. Besides, your mum has been absolutely delightful, I've enjoyed spending time with her this afternoon." She smiled. It was a little white lie. Kind of. "Enjoyed" might have been too strong of a term to have used but it wasn't as if it had been unbearable!
Clem's hand fell back to her side when she offered him food and he waved said offer away. She was relatively sure he was joking about her in the kitchen when they were married and she chuckled playfully, scrunching her face in an amused and silly sort of way. She walked fully into her kitchen and pulled out a couple of dips and some water crackers from the cupboard. She began to plate them up with some grapes and strawberries and hoped it would be enough for Lucian. "Help yourself to a drink." She offered, hopping he'd feel at home enough to actually help himself and get to know his way around her little kitchen. She wasn't going to have it much longer, really. They were going to have their own place soon enough and that would be their marital home. Clem was partially looking forward to it but at the same time she knew she'd mourn the loos of a space that was all hers and no one else's. Still she supposed she could have a little area somewhere, a little office of her own to work from, because if Lucian thought she was going to give up work once they were married then he really didn't know her all that well. That was definitely something they needed to work on together. Getting to know one another was a necessity in Clem's eyes but when they tried they ended up between the sheets, which was fine by her, you could tell a lot about a man by the way he made love to a woman, but it wasn't getting to know the important things ... at least it was fun and she'd never say no to a roll between the sheets with her fiancé, it was all in good fun!

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
It would appear that his playful teasing about having her in the kitchen had not struck the wrong cord. Clem made a face at him that put his mind at ease, and then she turned stepped into the kitchen and began putting together a little plate for him. As directed, Lucian fixed himself a drink, and a second one for his fiancée, and he levitated the glasses into the lounge as he stole his snack plate from Clementine so that she would not have to carry anything the short distance from the kitchen to the living room.
Time moved quickly as the pair chatted, discussing the more surface level bits of their past. Lucian skipped over any mention of Kathleen, his first and only love, and the heartbreak she had orchestrated against him with her deceit. At some point the subject would need to be broached, not because he thought Clementine would care that he had had any serious relationships before her, or even that he was quite possibly still in love with a married woman, but because the Gods had deemed it humorous to place Kathleen’s new family in the same circles as the Burkes. There were several affairs in which Lucian had the awkward pleasure of not only seeing his true love dance and lean on her husband in public, but he had also been in the position where he had had to speak with the man. Several times. It had been a nightmare for him and the tension was palpable.
Lucian wouldn’t allow Clem to be caught off-guard by their meeting at such a public event, and he certainly would have loathed having her discover his past from a third party and jumping to conclusions that any awkwardness with Ronan Foley, Kathleen’s husband, was due to an affair. Lucian wasn’t the sort to cheat on his girlfriends, or his fiancée as the case may be, but as their union was arranged, Clementine wouldn’t know this of her future husband yet. He would put her mind at ease, but not tonight. Tonight they would share stories of the good times, discuss their impending future, and with any luck, shed their clothes and explore each other’s bodies as they became further acquainted with each other.

Only time would tell if things would work out between the two of them. Whatever happened they would be married, man and wife, and they would see to it that they had a child, it was the right thing for them to be doing but would they get on? Would this new but forced friendship develop into more? Clem wasn't sure. She'd never had the time to love before what with her duties keeping her busy. Planning a wedding and working high up in the ministry was time consuming. Add to that being a Death Eater and it was clear to see why Clem rarely had time for anything. She put in all her effort for social gatherings to appear the part of pureblood elite and she had her occasional dates with Lucian to get to know him better. Life was hectic but a part of her thrived on it, though when the stress became too much she was prone to her little outbursts, nothing that Lucian was yet to see, thankfully. There was plenty to keep hidden from him, the fact she was a Death Eater was probably the largest factor. He could wait until they were married before he found out that she was one of the Dark Lord's followers. As far as she was aware he was not a follower blessed with a mark but the he could have been, after all not everyone knew who everyone else was within the masked circle.
They chatted for a while and drank a little. Slowly Clem found herself moving closer and closer to Lucian, enjoying his company and feeling more than at ease with her fiancé. He seemed like a good man, funny at times too, and he was certainly attractive, that was for sure. Leaning into Lucian Clem placed her lips against his tenderly. Since they'd been officially engaged he'd been the only man she'd slept with, kissed even, and in a way it worked out well, she didn't have time to actively look for someone to fall in love with, it was too exhausting so having a guy on hand was kind of convenient, and soon they'd want an heir to the Burke name and fortune so it was going to be a busy couple of years trying for a son, something she was not at all disappointed about.
