Man he was tired. Gus ran his hands through his hair, pushing it back. It stayed in place as he gave his wand a wave and the bail of hay in front of him floated on over to the corner of the barn he was in. It stacked neatly on top of the others that were there and that was it. He was done for the day. At least his outside work was. All the animals were mucked out, groomed and fed for the day. Students were hopefully all up at the castle because it was getting dark, fast. The winter had brought with it short days. The dawn was late and the sunset early. As the last glimpse of light vanished from the sky, Gus made his way up to the castle, his boots covered in soft mud. Gus loved his job but being a new father again while working full-time at the castle had its drawbacks. Mostly the lack of sleep. But he was managing, and so was Hazel. She made it all seem impossibly easy. She was such a fantastic mother, and partner for him. Despite having Sophie and Susan, as well as her parents, she still found time for him. Gus was madly in love with Hazel and he wanted to make sure that she knew that.
By the time Gus got up to the castle, dinner was well underway. He used a spell to clean off the muck from his boots and headed to his quarters. He passed students on the way that turned their noses up a bit but he couldn’t blame them, he stunk right now and the first thing he did when he got to his quarters was take a shower. Smelling a heck of a lot better, Gus emerged from the shower and wrapped a towel around his torso. With a spare hand towel, Gus dried his hair, rubbing the cream coloured towel over his hair. He combed his hair, dressed himself up and then headed back towards the great hall, hoping that perhaps he might catch Sophie on her way out of dinner.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away Sophie had opted for soup for dinner. It was easy to eat with one hand and hold a book with the other, and it wouldn't interfere with her studying. The Transfiguration tome wasn't anything important, just a bit of light reading, but she was of the opinion that you could never soak up enough information in your school years. You had to be proactive and take it all seriously otherwise what was the point? She wanted to get a good job when she graduated, she wanted to be in a strong position where any employer would be eager to snatch her up on the spot and give her a brilliant role. Ambitious? Yes. If only she knew what she wanted to do with her life. That was the only flaw in her plans. It just meant that she had to study a broad spectrum of subjects just in case she might need them one day. She was happy to put the hard work in if it meant she would one day secure herself a bright future in some corner of the world. Perhaps she would become Minister one day. Her soup was cold by the time she'd finished chapter fifteen, so she picked up an apple for dessert and left the Hufflepuff table, chapter sixteen open in her hand as she walked. She was tired, but she could manage another chapter before bed. She could have sworn someone called her name at the Ravenclaw table, but she was too far away. Surely she wasn't the only Sophie at the castle, it might not have been one of her friends. She carried on walking, sidestepping here and there to dodge around other students who were coming and going. The doors to the Great Hall were open when she reached them, and she stepped through, pulling her nose out of her book long enough to steal a quick glance at her surroundings, checking for things she might bump into whilst reading. Oh. Him. Feeling like the biggest bitch in the world, but unable to fight the childish whim, Sophie buried her nose back in her book, and attempted to walk right past Professor Bones as though she hadn't seen him. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 401 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

It was fair to say that Gus was a little nervous. He knew that Sophie hadn't really taken to him in her life, in a new way, all that well. She was used to him as "Professor Bones" but to now have to have him as her mum's boyfriend was a little too hard for her to cope with, it seemed. Gus had always thought Sophie was a reasonable and level headed individual, but the looks she gave him and the immature behaviours she occasionally displayed pointed in another direction. Gus should have known, really, but he'd hoped it would have been different. Ah well, he would soldier on. This was Sophie's last year of school and she was going to ace it, Hazel as confident in Sophie's abilities and so Gus was too.
For a while now, Gus had wondered about proposing to Hazel. They'd been together for over a year, had a daughter together and were crazy in love with each other. He'd thought that perhaps he'd be better off waiting for Sophie to graduate but something wormed its way into his mind that perhaps Sophie was worried about Gus's ability, or even willingness, to commit to her mother, and he hoped that this would show her that he was very much in love with Hazel, that he would support her through thick and thin, and he'd even be there for Sophie.
When the buoyant curls of Sophie Vector bounced out of the great hall, Gus noticed them at once. He also noticed her look up and then back down into her book, completely ignoring his presence, seriously, was a nod of acknowledgement a too much to ask? But for whatever reason, Sophie was attempting to walk right past him, and Gus almost let her before he decided that no, he was sticking to his plan. "Miss Vector," He said before clearing his throat, would she bother stopping, this was a personal matter so if she carried on walking he wouldn't dare take points away from her, "I was wondering if I might have a private word with you." He tacked on quickly, hoping she'd not throw a lot of attitude his way, but the chances of that happening were slim to none.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away Miss Vector? Really? So formal. So annoying. Urgh. She waited until she had passed Professor Bones and then slowed until she came to a halt. What could he possibly want her for? Lifting her head, she gave a dramatic roll of her eyes while her back was to him, and then forced herself to turn and face him. Her book remained open in her hands until he asked her if he could have a word in private. She snapped it shut, hoping to convey that he had interrupted her and she wasn't best pleased. She couldn't be rude to him in the middle of the entrance hall, though, so she reigned her annoyance in and forced herself to stay in control. She didn't know why just the mere sight of him sent her into an irrational grump, but it did. She had adored him before he'd started dating her mum. She'd go so far as to say he was her favourite teacher until that day. Funny how the simple threat of someone ousting a loved one out of their role made you change your mind about a person. He couldn't be her father. Nobody would ever be her father. Ever. Nobody. Alvin Vector was irreplaceable. Still, she tried to imagine she was dealing with the old Professor Bones, the one that wasn't banging her mother, the one she liked. "Of course, sir," she said politely, tucking her book underneath her arm and lifting her chin to meet his gaze confidently. She had made her feelings clear over the past year or so, he knew exactly what she thought of his union with her mother, and exactly what she thought of him barging his way into her family. But now there was little Susie to think of, and honestly, Soph loved her baby sister more than she had thought she ever would. The baby deserved a happy family, and Remy, Gus' daughter was actually really cool. She just couldn't shake the feeling of losing her dad all over again, and so the attitude remained, despite the slight shift in her feelings recently. Gus had brought a few good things into her world, but she didn't know if she would ever be able to accept him as anything more than a professor. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 413 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

She was past him before she stopped to acknowledge him. Gus could feel a lump in his throat. He didn't think he'd ever been so nervous in his life. He really should have repeatedly practised what he wanted to say to Sophie. She was at a very delicate time in her life and he was about to either help ease her mind or make it a million times worse. Either way it felt as though this was becoming a silly decision. But he loved Hazel, he wanted to be with her for the rest of his life. He wanted him and Hazel and Susie to be a family, but more than that, he wanted Sophie to accept him into their lives because without her blessing he believed he and Hazel would never have a straightforward relationship. Perhaps he should have talked with Remy about how best to talk to Sophie. She would certainly have had better insight to the teenage mind seeing that she was one.
"Let's just pop into the antechamber," He said, indicating to the room opposite the great hall, where he figured a little privacy would do them both well. All students knew of the antechamber across from the great hall, it was where they would have been gathered in their first year before they went for their sorting, where they were first greeted by the house ghosts. Beyond that the room didn't receive much use although people, students and staff alike, were free to come and go as they pleased.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away The antechamber seemed like a bit of a random choice of location to Sophie. What was wrong with his office? Or someone else's office on this floor? Or an empty classroom? Or just nowhere, that would have suited her much better. She didn't want to have a private conversation with him. What could it be about? She had a bad feeling about it as she walked past him and headed into the antechamber first. It was deserted, unsurprisingly, so there would be nobody around to eavesdrop, or witness her lose her rag and get two weeks of detention. It was a shocker that she'd even managed to get Prefect this year after her behaviour towards her Head of House. She had harboured hopes or being Head Girl, but that had been squashed, and honestly, she was completely grateful to have the role she currently had at all. She knew things had been overlooked to make it happen, though she had never spoken of it or acknowledged it further than a simple thank you at the beginning of the school year. She stopped in the middle of the empty room and waited for her professor to spit out whatever it was he wanted to talk about. She really hoped it was school related. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 241 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

This was going to be terribly awkward but Gus was prepared for the worst. Screaming, throwing things about, telling him to shove his idea where the sun didn't belong. Honestly, any reaction was valid right now and he'd deal with whatever came. He just needed to get it all over and done with but he was hyper-aware of how he was moving. Did he always walk like this? It felt like a waddle. The only time he'd ever felt this awkward was when he'd waddled his way up to the sorting hat in his first year. He'd not been a graceful kid and he was proving right now that not much had changed since then.
He shut the door behind them and knew it was time to bite the unknown Berty Bott Bean. He turned to face Sophie and he could feel his stomach twisting into knots. "I had a question for your mother." He started, already messing up. "But first I needed to ask you. It's important to me that I ask you first." This was, quite simply, awful. He felt as though he was completely putting his foot in his mouth and that no matter what he did, he would be doomed. "For Christmas I wanted to ask your mother for her hand in marriage, but I won't without your blessing." He told her, watching the expression on her face carefully, knowing he was walking on thin eggshells here and was quite possibly about to face a massive tantrum from a teenager with far too much on her plate. This was, quite possibly, a breaking point. Oh Merlin, how was he going to be able to explain to Hazel that he'd broken Sophie without letting on he wanted to ask her to marry him? He really should have waited until after Sophie had graduated.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away Sophie went from a quirked brow of confusion - if he wanted to ask her mother something, then why was he talking to Sophie? - to a stony expression as the word "marriage" spewed from Professor Bones' mouth. Marriage? Wasn't it a bit soon for that? They hadn't even been together that long, as if it wasn't bad enough that he knocked her mum up right away like a dirty bastard who couldn't keep it in his pants, now he wanted to get married after five minutes too. "So, are you asking me something, or just telling me?" she asked, folding her arms across her chest. He hadn't technically asked her a question, she wouldn't voluntarily offer up an answer, even though he was clearly wanting her to say "Oh, sure, marry my mum, I'm fine with it." She wasn't fine with it. And if he was going to do it at Christmas then she didn't even want to go home for Christmas any more because it would just be shit all over by her mother gushing over Gus and flashing a poxy ring all over the place. Urgh. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 223 notes: Oh dear. <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

Right. Yes. He hadn't actually asked her anything. Gus wasn't sure he'd been this nervous before in his whole entire life. The idea of proposing was nerve wracking enough, but he'd decided to do it over the Christmas break and what was more his lover's daughter seemed to actually despise him. He understood why, but he couldn't exactly grasp ... why. It made some sense but it also made no sense at all. "I am very much in love with your mother." He said, the most confident he'd been this entire conversation because it was something he would always be sure of. "She has been a light in the darkness of my life." Perhaps he was being a touch too dramatic, but he'd honestly given up on ever falling in love with anyone ever again, after all he was a divorced man with an adult child, who could possibly want to get involved with someone like him? Hazel, that was who. She'd shown him a kindness that had taught him not only to love again, but that also he could be loved. "I'm aware of how clichéd I sound, believe me, but she brings out the very best in me, and I think I bring a spark to her that she's been missing." He didn't want to flat out bring Hazel's first husband, Sophie's dad, one of his closest friends from school into this, but Alvin had been the love of Hazel's life, he was Sophie's father and Gus was never going to be able to replace that for either of them, but he could love them both and he could support them, be there for them whenever they needed him, and of course he wanted to be a family of five with them, Remy and little Susie. "Look, I want you to be happy too, Sophie. You're as much a part of this as anyone, which is why I need your permission to ask for your mother's hand in marriage. And if you're not happy, I won't ask." He said, feeling heavier than a boulder, just stuck in the place he'd been standing. He felt physically glued to the spot with some kind of spell. A spell that also made him ramble a whole load of crap and screw things up, apparently. "So, Sophie Vector, please may I ask for your mother's hand in marriage?" He said, feeling as though he had a whole apple lodged in his throat as he watched Sophie, scared to death of rejection while simultaneously expecting it.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away 'So don't ask, then, because I'm not happy,' she pleaded silently. Why was he doing this? It was so unfair to put her in this position. She was a kid, she was hurting more than anyone could understand, and it should not be her responsibility to decide the fate of her mother's love life. What was she supposed to do? Her heart told her to tell him no, to tell him to just leave them alone because they were happy before he wormed his way into their world. But her head told her that she had no right to get in the middle of her mother's relationship and ruin it for good this time. She knew her mum lit up whenever Gus was around, she wasn't blind. Even that hurt Sophie, though. Seeing her being happy with someone other than her dad was a stab through the heart. Had she forgotten him so easily? None of it made sense to Sophie, but when she pushed all of the clutter away and looked at the heart of the picture, Gus made her mum happy. Nothing else really mattered, did it? Sophie tilted her chin up, eyes wet with tears she would not allow to fall as she fearlessly held her Professor's gaze. "Don't expect me to ever call you dad," she said quietly. "You will never be him." She swallowed, finding it hard to talk without wanting to sob. She was doing it. She was giving in. She was putting her own hurting aside for the sake of her mother's happiness, and she did not feel proud or pleased with herself for being selfless. It sucked. "Susie deserves a proper family." Sophie shrugged, trying to brush it off as nothing, though the tension was crackling in the air around her. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 332 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

Oh no. Oooh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. She had glistening eyes. There were tears starting to fill her eyes. Gus felt like utter flobberworm shit. This was the worst timing and clearly Sophie was not on board with it at all. He had to make this better, he had to find a way to make Sophie more comfortable. But how the hell was he going to do that?! He had no idea how to talk to teenage girls, apparently. He'd always thought he was pretty good at it. He was a teacher, he had a teenager of his own, and he was the Hufflepuff head of house this year, so surely he had a fairly decent rapport with the teens? All but one, he guessed. One that it was most important to get along with. "I'm ... I'm sorry. I didn't mean ... I don't ever want to take over from your dad. Not in a million years." He said, almost lost for words. He should have been more prepared for this. "He's irreplaceable to you and your mum, and I know that, I do." He said, at least attempting to reassure her that she'd never have to call him 'dad' and that Gus was very much aware that Alvin would forever be a presence in their hearts and home. "I'd just hoped that me and you, your mum, Susie and Remy, that we could be a family together." He sighed, "A weird ... mish-mashed family or some kind." He was losing hope for this. She hadn't given him any sort of direct permission and he supposed he was okay with that. She wanted Susie to grow up with a real family, which was more kind and considerate than most kids her age, but was it really enough to go on? Gus wasn't so sure.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away Just hearing him talk about her dad made Sophie want to punch Gus right in the nose. He was ruining everything! She'd been happy before he'd stuck his oar in and started rowing their boat. In the wrong direction. Through a swamp. He'd been such a good teacher, and she'd really liked him. Like, really, genuinely liked him. Now he had just turned into the tit that got into her mum's knickers and wanted to replace her dad. It had all come a little bit out of the blue to Sophie, who never in a million years would have expected her mum to hook up with another professor. Or anyone really, she should have just stayed lonely forever, that would have been perfect. "Weird and mish-mashed. Yeah." She could agree that that was what they were. That's what they would always be. Weird. Wrong. Soph hugged her arms tighter across her chest. "Look, just do whatever you want," she said with a shrug that didn't convey a nonchalant air like she wanted. "It's none of my business anyway." She fixed her gaze on the door behind him. "Can I go now?"_______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 224 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

Gus, admittedly, had a hard time of reading women, but Sophie was making it all too clear that she didn't really care what Gus did. He thought that she'd have objected, or at least have a stronger opinion on the whole matter but she just wanted to leave. He did want to reassure her that she had plenty of say in this but it seemed like it would be the wrong place and time because she was itching to get away from him. Life was terribly awkward and it was all because of him. Still, Gus wasn't one to let any kind of situation get him down. He smiled awkwardly and Sophie and stepped to the side, making sure he wasn't blocking the door at all. He didn't know what else to stay so he just kept his lip buttoned and hoped that maybe, someday, Sophie would come around and realise that he and her mother made one another very, very happy indeed.

Things were all good yesterday, then the devil took your breath away He said nothing. Had she hurt his feelings? Had she been too frosty? Well tough titties! He didn't have a clue how much she was hurting, so whatever he was feeling right then just paled into insignificance. Soph wondered whether he would tell her mum about this conversation. That'd be a weird chat, and Sophie would come out of it looking like a demon. Again. She stepped past him on her way out the door. "Good luck," she muttered, eyes down. She couldn't look at him any more. She walked quickly but calmly out of the antechamber, crossing the entrance hall and making it all the way down to the basement in record speed. Tears were already spilling down her cheeks as she marched through the common room and into her dorm. She pulled the curtains around her bed and buried her face in her pillow. Life sucked. _______________________ tag: Fergus Jefferson Bones words: 181 notes: <3 outfit: School uniform. template by izzy[googlefont="Dr Sugiyama"][googlefont="Cinzel Decorative"]

It kind of sounded as though Sophie had wished him good luck, but Gus couldn't believe those words had come from her. She'd once been one of his favourite students but since he'd started dating her mother she'd become standoffish and cold. She wasn't at all a fan of him these days and it showed. Gus didn't know how to change that but he did hope she'd come around some day. After she left. Gus took a deep breath and pushed his hair back with both of his hands. He took another deep breath, his hands resting at the back of his head, fingers woven together as he wondered if he should go ahead with a proposal or not. Had this been too traumatic for Sophie? It certainly seemed so. Perhaps it was going to be best to wait until Sophie had graduated, at least that was she wouldn't have to put up with his dumb arse about the castle day in and day out. Gus had a lot of thinking ahead of him and as he left the little room, he just went straight across to the great hall to get a bite to eat, even though he wasn't really all that hungry right now.
