New Years Eve was only a few days away, and Kit had nothing new to wear. He liked to have nice clothes and look good, but not to the extent of buying new things every other week. It had been a while since he'd added anything new to his wardrobe as far as "being dragged to a party on New Years Eve" went. He'd need to look like he'd made an effort if all he was going to do for the night was pretend to enjoy his drink and feel incredibly awkward until ten minutes after midnight when he'd be going home and reading himself to sleep. He'd promised friends that he would make the effort though, and so he'd gotten up early and headed into Hogsmeade for a bit of shopping. A visit to Geralina had been first on his list, and he'd enjoyed catching up with her for a good hour at her little cottage, though he'd left before he might have liked to thanks to the fact that her pets hated him. It wasn't anything personal, Kit knew that, all animals tended to hate vampires and have a bit of a dramatic reaction to them, but Geralina's pets were old, he'd feel absolutely horrible if they had heart attacks and died because of him.
A quick stroll through the village had brought him to Gladrag's, where he had spent the last half an hour perusing the men's clothes and robes on offer. After some fussing - he was quite picky - he settled on a couple of nice shirts, and headed to the changing rooms to try them on. One was a deep red colour, which he'd never tried before, but his sisters suited red and they all had a similar complexion and colouring, so maybe he'd be able to pull it off. He pulled the curtain closed around him, shielding him from the rest of the shop, and unbuttoned his shirt, sliding it down off of his shoulders and revealing his toned torso, which was covered in tattoos which traced the lines of scars he had earned in training and on the battlefield that was being an Auror. Every wound Kit got in a duel or fight, he would wait until it was fully healed, then get it tattooed over. Some friends who knew about his little habit thought it odd, but Kit liked to wear his scars with pride, and this was his way of doing so. He worked hard for his job, and if showing off his wounds made him feel good, then that's what he would do. He hung his own black shirt on the hook and began to unbutton the deep red one from it's hanger.

❝ If you want trust you gon' have to give some away❞
If there was one thing James wasn’t particularly fond of, it was clothing shopping. He supposed that was a normal guy thing though. He just didn’t have the patience to sit around for hours on end and go shopping for clothing. He could honestly think of about one hundred other things he would probably like to do better. Of course, some most of those things probably were probably frowned upon by the general public. But that was usually what made them fun. But as it were, he had a wedding approaching, and he couldn’t go to his own wedding without some nice dress robes.
He should have had Lily come with him. Or Remus. Or someone else more responsible. Because he was clearly proving that he was unable to do this himself. The proof? Instead of coming straight to the shop and just getting it over with, James had spent most of his time browsing through Zonko’s Joke Shop. James didn’t particularly need anything persay… but that hadn’t stopped him from purchasing a few items. You never knew when you would need them. People were always quick to dismiss pranks as nothing more than childish, but there was an art to pulling them off without getting caught. Most of the pranks the marauders had pulled in Hogwarts had required prep time... and lots of it. They'd had to do so without getting caught, otherwise the pranks wouldn't have worked nearly half as well.
After Zonko’s, he’d gotten a few sweets before casually making his way into Gladrags Wizardwear. Heaving a sigh, he began to browse through the collection to see what they had. Dear Merlin… he had no idea what he was doing….

Crap. The red shirt went over his shoulders nicely, but as Kit tugged it together to fasten up the buttons, he was met with a lot of unexpected resistance. "What?" he muttered, glancing in the mirror at himself and frowning as his reflection confirmed the shirt to be too tight. Had he put weight on? He hadn't thought so, and he hadn't changed his training regime. There were those mince pies last night which were about to run out of their use by date, he'd had to eat six of them, but he was a tall guy, they'd have gone straight to his feet and not made a blip on his physique. Maybe he'd gained some muscle, that was more likely. Actually, it wasn't more likely at all, but it made him feel better to tell himself that must have been why the shirt was bursting when he squeezed the sides together across his chest. He was an incredibly fit guy, but Kit was rather slim with it, this was a first for him.
Glaring at the shirt in the mirror, he sighed to himself and pulled it back off, realising there was only one thing for it. He needed a bigger size. He poked his head outside of the changing room curtain, looking for a shop assistant that might be able to help him. Nobody seemed to be around, and Kit's golden-green eyes flashed uncomfortably around the almost empty shop. He could hear chatter near the till on the other side of the room, and the soft shuffling of a customer or two shifting clothes and robes on the rails. The red shirts were only a few feet away in the next isle, he might get away with running shirtless for one and making it back to the changing room without being seen half naked by any unsuspecting shoppers. Kit bit his lip, glancing around once more before tugging the dark purple curtain back a bit more and exiting the little cubicle, hurrying into the next isle and halting dead in his tracks at the sight of a familiar face standing in front of him. James Potter. One of the new lads training to be an Auror, and part of the Order, too. He was a little bit loud for Kit's tastes, but he seemed like a nice enough person from what Kit had seen of him this year. Kit swallowed. "Potter," he greeted awkwardly, taking a few slow steps towards the shirts and realising that James was right in the way, Kit couldn't get to them without the guy moving. "I, uhh... Can I...?" He crossed his arms over his bare chest, highly self conscious, and pointed to the red shirts behind James.

❝ If you want trust you gon' have to give some away❞
He wondered around aimlessly through the ranks of robes and shirts. Sure, he knew how to dress himself. And he knew how to pick out his own clothing. Pureblood he may have been, he wasn’t that dependant on the house elf. But it did feel weird to be here without Dookey. He knew that if the House Elf knew he was out here by himself shopping for clothing, the little guy would have a heart attack. It had been Dookey’s job to help care for James ever since he was born. He’d put the poor elf through hell through the years. Not on purpose of course. Not that Dookey had complained. He knew the elf took great pride in his job. And he mustn’t have been too cross, because he usually slipped him extra Treacle Tarts after Dinner.
He could always summon the elf. If nothing else than to have someone to talk too. Of course, he was also afraid that whatever he picked out would somehow be wrong. While he could careless what he got married in, he knew Lily wanted everything to be perfect. What if the material of his dress robes weren’t what she imagined? Merlin’s Beard…. he should have come with her. He frowned slightly at the current rack of clothing in front of him. Seeing movement from the corner of his eyes, James quickly slipped his wand into his hand; only to stash it away when he realized who it was. “Devereaux.” Why… was he walking around half naked? Sure, it was something James would have had no problem doing. But… as far as he’d been aware, it wasn’t something the man in front of him did. Clearly he was wrong.
Blinking James turned to look at the shit he was standing in front of. “Oh… Oh!! Blimey, yeah. Sorry.” He stood to the side, waving the other man in front of him. “You know you can take multiple sizes with you, right? Not that the ladies mind.” He nodded over to a group of girls that were giggling and looking their way.

Undone James looked awkward. Embarrassed? Out of his comfort zone, definitely, but then if the shoe was on the other foot and Kit was standing in front of a shirtless James, he'd have been a bit all over the place, too. James was a good looking guy, Kit might have been awkward for other reasons, too, though not many people knew he fancied guys just as much as girls, he didn't exactly go around announcing it. James practically leapt out of the way, and Kit rushed to the red shirts, trying his best not to brush past James at all as he went, and began to rummage through the row of shirts without crumpling them. He spared James a glance over his shoulder when the younger guy quipped about people being allowed to take more than one item into the changing room. Well if he'd thought he needed to he would have, logic being his thing, but for now he'd just have to look a bit stupid. He pulled the next size up off of the rail and pulled it in front of him, eyes darting to the girls giggling at the end of the aisle. "I've been the same size for years," he admitted, "apparently I got fat overnight." He glanced down at himself a little bit self-conscious, a feeling he wasn't used to having since he was incredibly bloody fit and discreetly proud of his physique. He tugged the red shirt off of it's hanger and pulled it on, relief washing over him when the buttons met across his chest as he fastened them a little too quickly, vampire speed being pushed into action by the giggling girls that were still gawping. "Does this look like it fits?" he asked James, uncertainty in his voice since there were no mirrors around to help him. James probably had much better things to do with his time than giving Kit opinions on shirts, but since he was right there... "Are you..." Kit glanced around the other clothes surrounding them, "are you shopping for an occasion or did you eat too many mince pies, too?" he asked, running a hand through his hair and then wishing he hadn't because it was probably now sticking up in a million different directions, and still not a mirror in the vicinity to fix it or offer him comfort that it wasn't a mess. He was a mess right now, and Kit wasn't used to that at all. _______________________ tag: James Henry Potternotes: <3 template by izzy [googlefont="Rock Salt"]

He looked down at his own shirt. He… wasn’t sure if he was still the same size as he was before. He never really went clothing shopping. Damn. He should have brought Dookey. He’d just… grab a few shirts just to be safe and look to see what size he was when he went to change. “I highly doubt that’s how it works, Mate.” Sure, he didn’t get his own clothing, but that was common sense. “And besides, with the way Auror’s keep in shape, it’s probably just muscle mass. When was the last time you went clothing shopping?” More than likely it had been a gradual change.
Looking back up at Kit at his question, James tilted his head as he looked him over. “I mean, yeah. Your other shirts looked like they fit too though. I mean how does it feel?” He crossed his arms over his chest repeatedly, silently asking if he felt any tension or tightness in the shoulder, chest, back area when he did that. James hated that feeling.
Running a hand through his hair, James shook his head. “No, no mince pies… Merlin, that would probably be a lot easier… I need to look for dress robes. I doubt Lily will be thrilled if I went to our wedding wearing old robes.” He was ecstatic about marrying her. He’d told Sirius years ago he’d do it. And while he couldn’t wait, he would be lying if he said he wasn’t a bit on edge. It was, after all, a huge milestone in ones life.

Undone When was the last time he went clothes shopping. He was always overly busy these days, it might have been a while. That made him feel a little bit better. James looked Kit over in the red shirt, and Kit felt himself about to turn slightly red in the face. This was getting more awkward now that he was fully clothed, which was something he would never have expected in a million years, but having a guy scrutinize his appearance after talking about muscle mass stirred something in Kit that just made him want to shrink into a corner and avoid the conversation altogether. But he had asked James' opinion, so that was what he got, he supposed he couldn't complain, and he tried not to let his awkwardness show as he stood there feeling stupid and like a giant sore thumb in the middle of the shop. "It feels alright, I guess," Kit answered, smoothing his hands over the red material as it covered his torso comfortably. James was either awkward as hell, too, or had an itch he couldn't scratch somewhere because he stood there moving his arms about across his chest, and Kit tried not to watch, relieved when James stopped and ran a hand through that crazy hair of his instead. "You're wedding shopping? Alone?" Kit blurted, more than a bit surprised at the news. His eyes darted about the shop once more for signs of someone who might have been there with James, but everyone else seemed busy with their own stuff. Merlin, this guy was more out there than Kit had first thought, and probably about to be in a whole load of trouble if he chose the wrong thing to wear for his wedding. Kit hadn't actually met Lily properly, though he had seen her at an Order meeting in the autumn and knew she had red hair, apart from that they hadn't spoken a word, but he knew James was besotted with the girl. It'd be awful if this shopping trip caused trouble between the two. "That's a risky move," Kit laughed, awkwardness fading a good bit at the realisation that James was in a much more uncomfortable situation than Kit was right now. His entire relationship and romantic future could be in jeopardy if this went wrong for the guy. "Do you need help? Do you know what you're looking for?" he asked, not wanting to seem condescending, but kind of feeling like he needed to offer assistance if he wanted to sleep tonight. Kit had never really put much thought into getting married, and he certainly was no expert on what to wear for such a thing, but he often received compliments on his style, so he might have had some sort of knack for this sort of thing. _______________________ tag: James Henry Potter notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Rock Salt"]

❝ If you want trust you gon' have to give some away❞
James blinked as he looked at Kit. Was that wrong to do? Should he have brought his house elf along with him? It wasn’t like he was actually going out of his way to buy anything right now. He was just… looking. Getting a feel for it. He had to learn how to do so eventually, right? Because at nineteen, nearly twenty, he wasn’t sure how to do that exactly. He’d never had to go clothing shopping before; unless it was for his Hogwarts robes. And that didn’t really even count. “Yeah? Well, sorta.” He figured he’d only look at the materials and prices and go from there. Sure, he could buy everything he liked, let Lily go through and pick what she liked and return the rest. That was the safest he could think of to do when out by himself.
At Kit’s laugh, James felt his heart sink a little bit; but he didn’t allow himself to show it. Playing cool under pressure was his forte. As Lily had so eloquently put it; he was a pusher. He liked to see what he could and couldn’t get away with. And then, he liked to see how he could still get around it. It was, without a doubt, the prankster in him testing the boundaries. “A lot safer than half the other things I do.” Like joining the Order, training as an Auror, and marrying a muggleborn. Of course, there were other risks that people didn’t quite know about. Like being an illegal Animagi, running around with a werewolf once a month. All extremely risky, and yet worth all the dangers it put him in and then some.
“Honestly? I have no idea what I’m doing. My goal plan was to see what looked nice, buy it, let Lily decide what she liked and either return the others or just keep them for something else.” It didn’t matter how expensive it all was. Money had never been something that James had concerned himself with. He wasn’t even sure they hadn’t even picked a date yet for it. “I mean…. you’re supposed to wear white, right So if I get white robes…. that’ll work, right? Or do the blokes wear black? I can get something of each other and go from there.” Merlin’s beard… it was more intimidating when he was talking about it out loud.

Undone This sounded more and more stressful as James spoke. His first defense of wedding shopping alone was that it was a lot safer than a lot of other things he usually did. That was putting it lightly. Between James and his best friend Sirius Black both training to become Aurors, Kit had only known them both since last summer, but they were enough to make him feel sick with worry. Both reckless and immature - compared to Kit, at least - and probably going to either fail their training, or get themselves killed before they completed their third year. Not to be completely pessimistic, but they really set his nerves on edge, and he hoped he never got asked to work with them on any cases in the future, because he was pretty sure he'd end up having a serious breakdown after it and need at least a month off work to recover from the experience. It sounded dramatic, but Kit really didn't like chaos, and if he could honestly work with Dorian on every case, his world would be a very happy, peaceful place. On a personal level, however, he thought James was a decent guy, and he didn't like to think of him having a wedding crisis on his own, so Kit turned to look around at the clothes James had been looking at. Which ones had he even been looking at? Kit had no idea, but by the sound of it, neither did James. Maybe he'd just been standing around staring at stuff and not really paying attention to what was on the shelves, because there was a floral shirt a few feet away that was rather startling and not at all what anyone would want to get married in. Hopefully that wasn't what had caught James' eye, but Kit reached for a lovely black silk robe, just in case. "Black and white are usually a safe bet, unless Lily wants a tropical theme," he tried for a joke, though the thought of a tropical themed wedding made him want to recoil in horror. Holding the black robes up and running his hand over the material, he curled his lip a bit. "Is silk a bit... seedy?" he asked, wanting to say "is silk a bit porn star" but he was Kit Devereaux, and things like that just didn't come out of his mouth, so he went with the next best thing. He put the garment back and folded his arms across his chest, feeling weird just at thinking the words. "What do you like?" he asked, trying to divert the conversation away from seedy porn capes. _______________________ tag: James Henry Potter notes: <3 template by izzy[googlefont="Rock Salt"]
