Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
The healers were purposefully mum on Dorcas’ status and instead of answering Luka’s question they began speaking to each other, making rapid plans to move Dorcas to hospital. It all happened in a matter of seconds; one moment Moody was standing in a pool of blood watching the healers tend to Agent Meadowes who’s head was laying limply in Dolohov’s lap, and the next the Auror, the Unspeakable, and the Reception Witch were the only people left in the atrium. Dorcas’ blood squishing underfoot.

Several minutes later Alastor reappeared with a pair of healers in tow. He stood back to give them room to work as they flanked Dorcas and Luka before one split off to check on the medic. Blood was covering the floor, dotted with the buttons from Alastor’s shirt. The large pole in Dorcas’ stomach scraped the ground with a nauseating screech anytime someone moved her, but Moody could tell the witch was no longer moving on her own. He stepped closer and asked the healers what he could do to help, thankfully feeling an odd sensation under foot before pressing all of his weight down. He looked down and saw Dorcas’ wand under his shoe, and bent down to pick it up.

The welcome witch was shrieking hysterically, dragging her hands through her hair as if it were the only thing keeping her head from floating away in all the chaos. Lukas was being a complete arse - more so than usual - but he took Alastor up on his offer to do something useful by holding pressure on Dorcas' bigger wound, allowing Moody the opportunity to fetch another medic. His hands and the knees of his trousers were covered in blood as he stood and moved swiftly to the welcome witch. "Help him," he instructed her, pointing toward the medica who was flat on his backside, groaning. She gave a high-pitched whine as she nodded and moved in the medic's direction. Moody didn't bother to wait to see whether she and Lukas could handle their given tasks, but instead pulled his wand and quickly disapparated from the atrium.

His focus was fully on stopping the bleeding but even Moody couldn’t miss the sickening thud of the healer’s head slamming into the floor. “Go get another healer or get in here and stop the bleeding. Make yourself useful.”

Despite a couple of awkward hiccups, the party was going well. Alastor was playing chaperone to his wife, who had already had a couple of drinks and was tipsy enough that she was laughing a high-pitched giggle at basically anything. Clarice’s funny bone was tickled by just about any combination of words after a few drinks, so Ant suggesting he ‘make them pecs dance’ nearly made Clarice double over in enthusiastic supportive laughter. Moody flexed his chest muscles in Ant’s direction but kept his shirt on. It was still plenty of show for anyone caring to watch. Clarice howled with laughter so fervently that she toppled over, forcing Alastor to catch her before she face-planted on the floor. “Look at what you’ve started,” he called to Yaxley, an amused smile on his face.

Alastor ignored Luka’s nonsense that Dorcas was dead, and slid to the ground beside them as the reception witch rang for the healer. He swore at the sight of the pole through her middle but knew better than to pull it out. Instead, he focused on putting pressure onto her mangled arm in an attempt to slow the bleeding. His large hands weren’t enough and without thinking, he pulled off his shirt, buttons popping off in every direction, and pressed the fabric against her wounds. A pop signaled the arrival of the medic, but Moody refused to move until instructed to.

Moody ignored Dolohov’s salutation as he headed for the floo exits, ready to go home and maybe get a little firechat in with Clarice before he fell asleep. Alice would have been in bed hours ago, but he would try for her in the morning or square out a little time mid-day tomorrow to talk with her. He didn’t like being away from his family, but it was safer for them that they go. He was nearly at the first hearth when the sound of someone apparating into the atrium echoed off the walls, and the sound of someone screaming muffled out the reception witch’s gasp. Alastor turned to see a bloodied witch with a pipe through her stomach lying on the floor in front of Luka. “Call the healer!” he hollered at the reception witch as he ran back toward the scene.

Moody was busy listening to all the nitty gritty gossip about the couple on their way to the courts. The wife had attempted to remove her husband’s yellow armband in a spell that had gone awry. She was being charged with a few comparatively minor infractions such as Destruction of Government Property whereas her husband was facing 10 years in Azkaban for the part he played, though Moody didn’t get to hear the possible charges as they were interrupted by a loud knob who though being his father’s seed meant he could get away with anything he wanted. Sadly, it basically did, but Moody wasn’t one to cower to trumped up nitwits. “It is lucky, ‘cause if your father was here, he’d probably have a question or two for you and your little friend.” Moody nodded his head in the direction of one of the offices where Luka had emerged from and now a disheveled blonde witch was trying to step out casually despite wearing her skirt on inside out. Moody turned to the reception witch, “thanks for the chat. Have a good evening.” With the information he’d gleaned from his short conversation, he had enough to bring to Dumbledore and, if they were quick, they could potentially do some good amid all the evil.

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
Clarice and Alice were in Norway visiting Clarice’s extended family, or at least that was the reason they gave Alice for their trip. Alastor was having to work more frequent and more gruesome cases these days, so he and his wife had agreed that for at least a few weeks while he had to work longer hours, the women would be safer outside of Britain. They’d been gone for nearly a week now, which meant nearly a week of 15 hour shifts under his belt and he was still going.
Some of the muggleborn trials had been inexplicably moved to odd hours and days, so it was not a surprise to Alastor to see a small handful of people milling about the atrium just as he was heading home himself. An older couple, the wife with her head hung in apparent shame, were being directed to the wizengamot courts by the nightshift welcome-witch. Moody’s pace slowed as he watched them slink toward the lifts, the husband stroking his wife’s shoulder reassuringly, though his face betrayed his worries. When they were out of earshot, Moody approached the atrium clerk’s desk. “What’d they do?” he asked in a deep, gruff voice as if interested in gossiping about the couple who were probably only here because of their blood status and not because he wanted to see if he could help them somehow. As he chatted up the welcome-witch, a few more people came and went, but otherwise the atrium was hauntingly silent.

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
Clarice returned just in time to usher Alastor behind the sofa, saving him from having to make the decision himself. Clar was good for that, and he gave her a chaste peck on the lips as the ducked to keep the surprise alive just a little bit longer. Alastor was pleased for the opportunity to jump up and shout "surprise" along with the other guests, if only to save his knees from squatting longer, and definitely to get away from the smell that had been circulating the area. Moody's eyes were trained on Dorian's face, mildly amused at the clear shock and civilized annoyance on the uptight man's expression. Yes, that was definitely worth making the trip out.
Alastor put his hand around his wife's waist as they chatted with another couple and when her champagne glass was emptied, Alastor agreed to go fetch her another one. He was happy to let her be the one to get a little tipsy tonight. She was nearly always the responsible one, having to care for Alice while he was out working and rarely getting to socialize herself. He fully believed in the saying 'happy wife, happy life' and was already expecting to help a wobbling Clarice to bed at the same time as Alice would need to be going down. His wife was a light weight. "I'll see what food I can find you as well," he added before heading off toward one of the posh trays full of appetizers and alcohol.
"Are we talking presents?" Moody interjected, having heard hushed tones and naturally needed to ear hustle. Dorian and his newly found brother had just broken off from their group and now the idea was being floated that Dorian not open his gifts in plain view of all the curious onlookers who would surely make him feel even more discomfort than the party itself had already caused. Alastor enjoyed Dorian's company, but he'd come for the schadenfreude as much as anything else. "Come on then, Humbert. Let's all see what you've got there."

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
Alice was over the moon. It had been ages since her parents had let her go to a party, though at four years old any length of time beyond 20 minutes was considered an eternity. Alastor had been on the fence about attending. As much as the Order of the Phoenix and those few uncorrupted agents left in the Auror Department were fighting to keep peace and order, the world was a dark place. The world Alastor and Clarice had envisioned raising their daughter in no longer existed, and as such, a party was a big treat. But there were other reasons that Moody was apprehensive about attending, and that had more to do with Dorian’s suddenly watchful eye on those Aurors who worked with the Order. To Moody’s knowledge, Dorian hadn’t caught on to any of them just yet, but he was certainly suspicious. Alastor began distancing himself from Dorian, knowing the man was almost as good an investigator as Moody was, but they remained friends. Or whatever Dorian Humbert’s at arm’s length version of friends was. The fact that Dorian was having a birthday party at all was a bit of a shock, but when Dorcas explained that it was to be a surprise party it all made more sense. Humbert was going to hate this. Added incentive for attending was getting to see the tightly-wound, though ultimately upstanding man fake his appreciation at the lengths friends and family would go for him.
The Moody’s arrived early to the Meadowes Chateau, as instructed, Alice hopping excitedly at the chance to ring the posh bell. A house elf escorted them inside. Clarice was off with Alice in the playroom, convincing the suddenly shy toddler that she could play with the other girls. Aurora, apparently having become accustomed recently to entertaining younger children, was offering Alice some toys, but the dark haired girl only hid behind her mother’s legs and shook her head. Alastor was in the main room, chatting up Dorcas’ mum and complimenting the decorations over a pint. When he heard the instructions to take their places, Alastor looked around, wondering if he should attempt to duck behind a sofa with his large frame or if just quieting down would suffice.

The opportunity to handle Agent Hymbert came quicker than expected. Dorcas went quiet and Alastor turned his head to see Dorian approaching them at a steady pace. The man’s tone was not quite accusatory but Al knew him better than to suspect his statement was as innocuous as it may have seemed. “Good thing you were here, too, Agent Meadowes. That kid is terribly lucky you have such good timing.” Alastor gave his head a nod in the direction of where the boy was still being looked over a few yards away. “Dorian,” the hulking Auror stepped toward the trimmer man, crossing in front of Dorcas as he aimed to move the conversation away from any suspicions toward her, “this is going to be a massive investigation. Meadowes was just filling me in on the body count inside.” Alastor didn’t need the numbers, he knew who had been in there; he’d put them there. Like sheep to the slaughter. Their deaths were on his hands. “We’ll need experience heading the case.”

Only the boy. He and Dormiens had managed to smuggle several families out of the country by way of this safe house. Many people in and then out, as quickly as they could manage without completely abandoning them in a foreign country without shelter or connections. They had saved so many from persecution but it hadn’t been enough. They hadn’t saved them all. Alastor’s large hands were clenched into fists. Only the boy. They’d had a full house; four families, children, mothers, sons. Only the boy had survived, orphaned. Alastor had promised to protect him and he had failed spectacularly. Now he was expected to take lead? Alastor cursed loudly, smashing one of his fists into a nearby tree trunk. “Alright,” he managed through gritted teeth. “I’ll handle Humbert.”

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
Removing the Dark Mark that hung over the burning building was an easy enough task, though the magic took some time to dissipate, it was not a complicated task. Just a lengthy one. Thankfully, if there were anything at all to be thankful for in this situation, the attack on the safe house had occurred during the day so the glittering skull and snake hanging in the sky did not draw they eye in the same manner as the green glow that it created at night. Of course there were more muggles awake at the moment to notice the mark, so Alastor got to work immediately working to take down the tell-tale sign of a Death Eater attack.
With his first task completed, Alastor directed a few of the Obliviators to muggles he’d seen passing by that had managed to duck into a nearby home without wizard detection, then he joined the team extinguishing the fires around the outside of the building. When Dorcas and Dorian emerged they were ushered to the Healers and with the house merely more than a smolder, Alastor took advantage. “What of the families?” he asked Dorcas, positioning himself with his back to Dorian. This wasn’t Moody the Auror talking, it was Moody the Order member and the man who had been working diligently to smuggle the muggle-born families to safety. He had failed and he was furious.

Let the eye of vigilance never be closed
He chatted with Dormiens about the Abersteens and a few of the other families she’d been helping out, but there were just too many muggleborn families and only so many places to hide them without completely uprooting their lives. Granted, he had heard rumblings of some families up and leaving the country altogether, looking for safe haven in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, but most didn’t want to leave their entire lives. It was understandable and yet it was also infuriating that anyone was made to be in the place to make such a decision in the first place. It seemed as though Dumbledore was finally ready to do something about it and Alastor was ready to listen, at least until Dorcas Meadowes arrived and flaunted her imaginary bowel issues around the room. She was a good Auror, but a showboat. She clearly got a kick out of everyone knowing she was screwing around with a Lestrange, no shame about having murdered the bloke’s wife either. She was a weird witch, but Dumbledore saw something in her. Alastor couldn’t say what, exactly.
Albus began a short a speech and by the end of it, Alastor was a little miffed. “That’s it?” he muttered in disbelief quietly to D. It was a good start, he supposed, but it seemed like a pretty loose bandage on a huge gash across all of Britain. Surely there was something to be done from inside the Ministry’s walls. He was a sodding Auror for Merlin’s sake! His position could have been useful for something more than ushering families to a castle for a few months. Without much hesitation, Albus disappeared, and Alastor’s voice rose to its natural level as he expressed his dissatisfaction at the minimal actions being proposed. “What the bloody hell are they all to do come the end of summer? Enroll in lessons?”
